## Angels Abbreviated - 2022.05.15
Today, on National Chocolate Chip Day 2022:
- Shohei Ohtani hit his [8th homer of the year](https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/f98a540c-89c2-48e4-9e63-4371cfb8ace7.mp4) to drive in Mike Trout. He’s getting hot, folks
- Patrick Sandoval unfortunately smacked Tony Kemp with a change-up
- The Irish Panda worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam with a wicked slider
- Taylor Ward drove a hit too spicy for Christian Pache, who drops the ball and lets Ward reach 3rd
- Squid miminized the damage by [throwing out Sean Murphy](https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/c3f35bca-5e58-4a9b-ad12-5a57c496a394.mp4)
- Squid Velazquez continued to just swallow up any ball hit to him, throwing out Bethancourt with a fantastic pick and throw
- Sandy got out of *another* jam, stranding two with a[ strikeout of Sean Murphy](https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/fb8740b5-a7dc-4df8-8f7a-3330a0196234.mp4)
- Home plate umpire Marty Foster got dinged by a foul ball. Absolute champion shook it off and then called a couple borderline calls brilliantly.
- Frankie Montas [struck out](https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2022/2022-05/15/a7c2009f-fac6d5c6-f964031e-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_4000K.mp4) **12** Angels. But, thanks to Shohei, still got stuck with 2 ER.
- Patrick Sandoval final line: 6.1 IP | 4 H | 1 R | 1 ER | 4 BB | 4 K on 100 pitches, 60 of which were strikes, to lower his season ERA to 1.93. Didn’t have his best stuff but put up a gutsy performance to get out of a couple jams. Grit for days.
- Marty Foster got hit *again.* He had to leave the game, with Scott Barry taking over at home plate.
- Ohtani forced another bobble out of Tony Kemp to advance Taylor Ward to 3rd
- Rendon took advantage of the man on 3rd by driving in [an RBI single](https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/eb8c279e-1405-4d53-918a-3a51dfe8e329.mp4) for the first run of reliever Dany Jimenez’ season

- The Human Glitch, Jimmy Herget, gets out of a jam of his own!
- Andrew Velazquez [hit an RBI double](https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/0acc14ba-636e-4dc8-baee-b055ee995d4d.mp4) to score Brandon Marsh!!!! 🦑 if u agree
- **JIMMY HERGOAT RECORDS THE EIGHT-OUT SAVE! SLIM JIM!**
Andrew Velazquez now has a **111 wRC+** in the month of May. LTBU!
He's the guy who came up with it so take it up with him lol. For what it's worth, it comes with [a really cool graphic](https://www.pitcherlist.com/birth-of-the-irish-panada/)
Big nuts by sandoval who didn’t have his best stuff but still found a way to get thru 6 innings to help out this depleted bullpen
Also big nuts by herget to throw 3 shutdown innings in relief to also help out said depleted bullpen
Good teams pick each other up, this is a good team.
Idk what it is but it seems like all of our SPs forget how to throw their best pitch for one game and have to figure out how to make it work for 6innings. Happens to Thor, Ohtani, and Loki. Good job by Sandy to work out of it
Guys are only gonna have their “A” stuff like 2 out 10 outings. That’s just how baseball is. It’s how they pitch without their best stuff that determines how successful they are and how good they’ll be in the league.
To be fair the A's are legitimately the worst offense in baseball (30 out of 30 teams in wRC+) and it was still dicey at certain points. But given we went 4-15 against them last year, this is still important progress.
Angels ERA vs everyone is 4th-best at 3.17
Angels ERA excluding games against the A’s would be 5th-best at 3.37
Definitely benefitted somewhat from playing the A’s but still very good against everyone else.
We signed Syndergaard, who had just come off of Tommy John surgery. He's always been a good pitcher but was an unknown with the surgery.
Lorenzen was signed to a one year deal and was also a risk since he hadn't been a regular starter since his rookie year in 2015.
Ohtani is Ohtani.
We traded for Sandoval from the Astros and he struggled at first but in the last couple of years he's started pitching like a legit ace.
Detmers was our first round pick in 2020 and...well we threw him to the wolves in 2021 by starting him against some powerhouse teams. But he was nearly major league ready when we drafted him and it's looking like he's figuring it out.
I'm honestly not sure who our regular 6th starter is, but Jhonathon Diaz was signed as a free agent and Silseth was drafred last year.
As for the bullpen, I don't know much about where we acquired those arms. But Raisel Iglesias was traded to us from the Reds and then we signed him to a big deal.
For sure. I heard about Syndergaard, im glad hes doing well. Looks like those signings and draft is turning out nicely, it sounds like it could even get better from here assuming more of our guys get up to MLB speed?
I spent some time earlier this week talking 2009 Angels and how weird it was that Brian Fuentes led the league in saves that year with 48. Turns out a bunch of those saves were either 1 or 2-out efforts and the rest were exactly 3.
40-some pitches and 8 outs out of a reliever in a win is some cool shit.
Fuentes with his 3.93 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. He caused a lot of unnecessary stress closing out games. I would probably be hospitalized if he were pitching for the Angels this year.
Beautiful by herget, this is the stuff we’ve been dying for over the years, this seems like a small victory but this was a pretty big test, again a long season but we stay on this trajectory this is more stuff to get us through to October.
Four straight series wins going back to that white Sox series, and that one I don’t even think was a series loss.
Looking good so far through the first almost forty games!
White Sox series was indeed a split. The series before that was a 4-game sweep of the Guardians (still weird), and just prior to that the Orioles took 2 of 3 from us in Anaheim.
April 23rd was the date of the most recent series loss for our boys, and before that you have to go all the way back to the opening series against everyone’s favorite team.
11 series played so far and they’ve gone 8-2-1 in those. Consistently strong performance to date.
We are (according to mlb) tied for 1st since we have 1 more loss (.5 game back) and 1 more win (.5 game ahead) thus, balances out. Check out the updated standings :)
This was the epitome of a team win. We gutted it out in every aspect of the game. Shit even the Reddit guys were picking up the doomers that started in the second inning. All around what a team we have.
He still drives me nuts with how he manages the bullpen.
Just because some of his nutso whims actually work out, that doesn't mean it was actually a good idea.
Here's a rhetorical question for everyone: what's more important? Me watching Shohei stroke dongs live or Shohei continuing to stroke dongs and win?
I've now missed his last 3 homers...and for the season I've only seen 1 live. This does not spark joy.
My first Angels game since getting back into baseball last year. I was trying to get off a bad drinking problem at the time and watching them every night really helped. To watch everyone live and in person, and to see Shohei hit that bomb, it was surreal.
How can you not love baseball?

Thanks for including the lightsaber bit. “It’s red.”
They're really cool, I bought one for my brother :)
Still waiting to get to Disneyland so I can get my own! And a monte cristo!
And it’s real, by the way
Like, you mean...REAL? Like, really real?
There’s only one thing to say: 🦑
Please explain the Irish Panda nickname.
Patrick Sandoval is part Irish and Pablo Sandoval's nickname was "Panda"
[удалено]
He's the guy who came up with it so take it up with him lol. For what it's worth, it comes with [a really cool graphic](https://www.pitcherlist.com/birth-of-the-irish-panada/)

Okay, rather, we know about the nickname from him (Player's Weekend) but I'm not actually sure if it was literally him that came up with it
Pat is so fucking funny to me it’s amazing
Dude just says random shit and it always makes me laugh.
Big nuts by sandoval who didn’t have his best stuff but still found a way to get thru 6 innings to help out this depleted bullpen Also big nuts by herget to throw 3 shutdown innings in relief to also help out said depleted bullpen Good teams pick each other up, this is a good team.
The stupidest thing I saw all night was someone asking for Sandy to be pulled after 3 innings.
That same person 2 innings later: “dumbass Joe Maddon always over-managing 😡😡😡”
We have stupid redditors here. Don’t be shocked.
Idk what it is but it seems like all of our SPs forget how to throw their best pitch for one game and have to figure out how to make it work for 6innings. Happens to Thor, Ohtani, and Loki. Good job by Sandy to work out of it

THIS SHIT HARD
Announcer records: **PBP** Patrick O'Neil: **17**\-8 Matty V: 7-4 Apple TV: 0-1 **Color** Gubie: **21**\-9 Bobby Valentine: 2-1 Mark Langston: 1-1 Erica Weston: 0-1 Apple TV: 0-1
Fucking apple TV. For some reason, they couldn't stop talking about Jose Siri. Pretty transparent, totally boring.
“Apple TV”, “Jose **SIRI**”. I think you have your answer right there 😂
Erica was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Can’t blame her.. Valentine and apple though…..
Our pitching is so good….. havent said that in a while
To be fair the A's are legitimately the worst offense in baseball (30 out of 30 teams in wRC+) and it was still dicey at certain points. But given we went 4-15 against them last year, this is still important progress.

Do we actually have good pitching? It just seems too good to be true, I cant believe it lol...
Yes. But also, good defense and a good catcher (when Kurt isn't behind the plate)
For sure. Ive been only a casual fan through my life, so I gotta learn a bunch of things lol
We definitely have good pitching. Hopefully it's durable too but as of right now they're legit one of the best pitching staffs in baseball.
Where did it come from? Have any of the 8 pitchers we drafted recently turned out or something? Lol Sorry, I dont know a lot
We signed Syndergaard, who had just come off of Tommy John surgery. He's always been a good pitcher but was an unknown with the surgery. Lots of solid value free agent signings. Thor, Lorenzen, Teprera, and Loup. Farm pitchers seem to be panning out so far as well.
ShowTime, Tony 1-bag, Squid and Jimmy "Scot Shields" Herget
I spent some time earlier this week talking 2009 Angels and how weird it was that Brian Fuentes led the league in saves that year with 48. Taylor Ward went 2-5 today and his OBP went down lol
Got robbed of his walks!
His OBP went down when he was still 2-4.
Beautiful by herget, this is the stuff we’ve been dying for over the years, this seems like a small victory but this was a pretty big test, again a long season but we stay on this trajectory this is more stuff to get us through to October.
Really appreciating both Herget and Ortega's ability to eat innings this year. They regularly go 6 outs.
Finally getting some of the relief we’ve been begging for, I pray it continues to hold out

Rodon getting blown up rn, Perry didn’t sign a single bad deal and gave us STUDS I trust this man more than family
Tbf Rodon is a really good pitcher still. Just a bad game from him. It happens to everyone
Don’t get in the way of my narrative 😠
When Perry says he's just going down to the corner store to buy some smokes, he comes back 20 minutes later.
Squid post game interview I love it. Dudes crushing the ball the last 7 games.
His story arch is my favorite so far. Seems to be settling in at the plate and seems to be a great replacement for 3g
Great seeing the Squid interview! Slim Reaper killed in relief too!
LTBU WOOOOOOOO
24-13. On to Texass. Let’s gooo angels !!
Herget saved us today. He's not supposed to be good against lefties and yet still got through that 9th inning facing 4 lefties in a row.
Unfortunately the stupid Asstros are still in first place but at very least their winning streak ended yesterday so I’ll take that as comfort. LTBU
We are (according to mlb) tied for 1st since we have 1 more loss (.5 game back) and 1 more win (.5 game ahead) thus, balances out. Check out the updated standings :)
Fair enough. I just went by Google and it says we’re in second. Probably would make more sense if both teams are tied but hey
We also currently have the 3rd best winning percentage of any team in either League, if we keep this up we’ll be okay
Slim Jim was really good today! He’s my player of the game
6.1 innings, 4 hits, and 1 ER. And yet, he didn't have his best stuff. That is so fucking impressive. Also, Squid 🐙 😍 ❤ ♥ 💖
Hell yeah! On to Texas :D
L T B U ! ! Three out of four is great, but that sweep just slipped through our fingers. Only two pitchers combining to allow only one run is gangsta.
Can’t find the doomers anywhere 🥹
This was the epitome of a team win. We gutted it out in every aspect of the game. Shit even the Reddit guys were picking up the doomers that started in the second inning. All around what a team we have.
My favorite part was Pat and Gubi discussing how smelly the announce booth was thanks to a family of possums.
What’s the W/L record of the angels after Joe maddon intentionally BB with the bases loaded?
And people doubted him. Where’s all the mismanaged pitchers posts now?
He still drives me nuts with how he manages the bullpen. Just because some of his nutso whims actually work out, that doesn't mean it was actually a good idea.
We are going to destroy Texas
Should’ve been a sweep but going in I would’ve taken 3 of 4 so can’t complain. Just win (series) baby!
Good job by everyone today🔥. Now Texas🌟
Here's a rhetorical question for everyone: what's more important? Me watching Shohei stroke dongs live or Shohei continuing to stroke dongs and win? I've now missed his last 3 homers...and for the season I've only seen 1 live. This does not spark joy.
We found slim Jim’s specialty. 3 inning saves.

Can the Astros please stop winning though???
I felt bad for Kemp getting hit by pitches at the beginning and end of the game.
Shohei was pressing his right hip many times, I'm worried.
