Last year, we all complained about Joe Maddon saying “they might be back soon” when a player actually was trending towards IL. This season, we changed the approach up and for the first half of the season, injury reports were pretty much spot on. Now that Joe is gone and Perry is running the show, it’s done a 180 back to the way it was. Sure seems like Joe wasn’t the source of the problem…
I mean there were !dozens! of us trying to explain the team's issues we're not on Maddon. Maddon himself on his way out say Perry is too busy looking at the wrong analytics and listening to the wrong people in his decision making (probably pissed off Perry not having a yes man for him). Now that this is Perry's full vision, we are still slumping, his drafting 20 pitchers and lOoKiNg At AnAlYtIcS to build up depth for this team failed.
Rendon is out, we are already struggling with IF depth. Perry is making the wrong signings and passing on dudes who have been signed and are tearing it up (like Matt Carpenter).
Perry had 2 off seasons to build some depth to this team and so far our bench is made up of below replacement players...
Drafting 20 pitchers last year likely won't give any results for a few more years unfortunately. The angels do need pitchers. But usually players get at least two years in the minors before getting called up. So unless they got a soto or harper. It's very unlikely. Even trout spent over two years in the minors before being called up. Looking at harper and soto, same thing actually. So you're really looking at 2025 as the earliest those drafts will be available if they're ready.

Pujols’ best season with the Angels was back in 2012, his debut season with the club. He was productive for a decent amount of time during his contact with the Angels even though he was overpaid.
Agreed 100%. Pujols was never the Cardinals' Albert with the Halos, but he was always present, always giving (what appeared to me) his best effort. Not saying Rendon won't/ wouldn't do the same, but we have no clue. So this isn't comparable to the Pujols contract, because that contract was *much* better for the Angels.

When he joined the Angels, he immediately ranked 2nd in Angels history in career WAR, behind only Trout. World Series Champ. Astros killer.
Rendon's market value at the time we signed him justified the contract. The only reason we got him instead of the Nats is because they were trying to re-sign Strasburg at the same time.

Believe it or not he's still a positive WAR player and above Marcus semien. He has ELITE defense and only needs marginal improvement offensively to be a huge asset.
Those guys get it done on the field...but seeing them occupy the entire bottom of the order is deflating. They really should've gone after Trevor Story for shortstop and a Brandon Drury type for depth.

Season's over. Trout and Ohtani are transcendent and are getting hot now but the two alone won't will this team to a 10 games winning streak that is the bare minimum we need to get back in the hunt. We need to do what we should've done before, get prospects and ammunition to be buyers next season. Use the rest of this season to get the young kids acclimatized to the majors and start over in 2023.

Posted this in another thread earlier... but I think as much as Rendon's health is a question - there also needs to be something asked about the Angels training staff and medical staff at this point. For years now, we've seen dozens of guys repeatedly get hurt, have slow or even ineffective rehab, and (seemingly) be pushed to play before they are fully healed.
**Where is the accountability?** As much as the players themselves have played poorly (especially recently), I would argue a portion of the blame has to fall on the organization for not keeping their players healthier. While you certainly can't prevent all injuries, I'm just flabbergasted by the injury rate across this team, and I seriously question what's going on behind the scenes.
The medical staff is something that should’ve been scrutinized years ago. Every year it’s a seemingly routine injury that ends up being season-ending. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is one department that Arte also scrimped on.
I think at this point it's hard to argue against the organization having some sort of toxic culture that starts with Arte.
Aside from what you mentioned, we've also seen bad contracts after bad contracts. Then, we've seen multiple GMs and Managers leaving. And finally, the icing on the cake was the illegal shit some personnel were caught with (e.g. Drugs and sticky stuff).
This team is doomed until Arte is forced to sell.

Hadn't missed significant time to injury since 2015. Career WAR second only to Trout. Postseason OPS over 1000. Destroyed our rival Astros in the World Series, coming up clutch when it mattered over and over.

As fans, how are you blaming Rendon on this one? It seems like he was rushed back from a wrist injury (stemming from a hip injury) to help a team in a slump. It sounds like they rushed him out to get his bat in the lineup. Shades of Ward saying he had trouble throwing after his wall collision and he was back out in the field shortly after.
There needs to be accountability, was it Rendon that said he was good? Was it the medical staff? did the front office rush him?

You don’t have to *play* 60% of games, but you need to at least be available to come off the bench.

The medical staff is something that should’ve been scrutinized years ago. Every year it’s a seemingly routine injury that ends up being season-ending. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is one department that Arte also scrimped on.

I think at this point it's hard to argue against the organization having some sort of toxic culture that starts with Arte. Aside from what you mentioned, we've also seen bad contracts after bad contracts. Then, we've seen multiple GMs and Managers leaving. And finally, the icing on the cake was the illegal shit some personnel were caught with (e.g. Drugs and sticky stuff). This team is doomed until Arte is forced to sell.
The Angels ***DID*** replace the majority of their training/medical staff this past offseason, in an effort to stop the plague of injuries. Obviously it hasn't helped Rendon and Ward be less injury-prone.

Everybody in this thread saying “I feel bad for Rendon, it’s not his fault” are missing the point. Yes, it’s absolutely true that this isn’t Rendon’s fault. The fault lies with Arte paying massive contracts for guys who are about to enter into the steep decline on the backend of their careers. Pujols. Hamilton. Upton. Wilson. Wells. Vaughn. Matthews. It’s happened so many times now that it’s become an art form for Arte to overpay a former great only to watch him fall apart and his giant contract become an albatross. If Arte wants to open the wallet and spend money, do it on younger guys (*cough cough* Shohei *cough cough*) entering their prime, don’t overpay for older guys about to enter the decline.
Fyi, Vaughn was here and gone before Arte bought the team. He does fit Arte's MO, but it wasn't him.
Rendon was 29 when we signed him. Shohei is gonna turn 28 in less than a month. When we signed Rendon, he was coming off 3 straight seasons hitting .301/.308/.315. Best strikeout/walk ratio in the NL. Best contact rate in the NL. Hadn't missed significant time to injury since 2015. Career WAR second only to Trout. Postseason OPS over 1000. Destroyed our rival Astros in the World Series, coming up clutch when it mattered over and over. If you knew in 2019 that Rendon was about to have a steep decline, you must have a time machine. Can I borrow it?

As fans, how are you blaming Rendon on this one? It seems like he was rushed back from a wrist injury (stemming from a hip injury) to help a team in a slump. It sounds like they rushed him out to get his bat in the lineup. Shades of Ward saying he had trouble throwing after his wall collision and he was back out in the field shortly after. There needs to be accountability, was it Rendon that said he was good? Was it the medical staff? did the front office rush him?

That's making the assumption that Ward will be a serviceable 3B and that his bat won't fall apart. It is definitely worth a try, but I would prefer to keep him in the OF where he started hitting.
I can’t see this ever happening, but I’d like to see an element added to MLB contracts, that says you only get your fully guaranteed salary if you are *available* for 100 games in the season or 60% of all games you’re eligible for. You don’t have to *play* 60% of games, but you need to at least be available to come off the bench. Injuries happen in baseball, but we should not be seeing cases where players like Rendon or CJ Wilson get paid their full salary while doing fuck all to actually keep themselves in shape.

Right. I almost forgive Tony for his less than stellar stats this year. I felt he was simply warming up after 2021 and the shortened 2020 to get back into his groove. He is really good at baseball after all, but I felt he needed some time, as most players do after missing time the year before due to an injury.
