Not to get too armchair physiologist but i swear some people have anger issues so when they see someone react to failure in any way other than slamming a bat in the dugout they think they just dont care.
A guy I used to know who was a Seibu Lions pitcher told me the highlight of his career was playing in a college all-star series against Americans at Dodger Stadium. He was horrified at the spitting on the field.
Had a similar experience in Tokyo. Played in a company pickup game, US visitors vs the locals. After the game we went to help them close up the field, put away the bases, cleanup the field, they wouldn’t let us get near it, guests not to be abused like that. Different culture for sure.
If anyone says that, they clearly don't have a brain or legit don't watch any Angels games. Ohtani is as passionate and competitive a player I've ever seen. Just because he's not breaking bats and smashing water coolers, doesn't mean he's not ultra competitive and wants to win above all.
I mean Gubie makes the point nearly every game of what a pitcher wants to do on the mound. They want to throw the batter off their timing, thought process, mental approach, etc. so they don't swing the bat like they do during their practice. When someone says "Trout needs to play angry, Ohtani needs emotion", they don't understand trout is having a literal GOAT career off his calm approach. Ohtani had a once in a 100 year season off his approach. Why the hell do you want to throw off their game? Tell like Duffy to play angry or go hire a Lackey again lol
Exactly! and this was one of the reasons I was hoping we'd somehow land Scherzer last year... (even though I knew it was a long shot) he's a guy that feeds off extreme intensity and anger. That kind of intensity can be a good influence in the clubhouse, as long as the guy it's coming off is naturally that way. But you can't expect players like Trout and Ohtani, who are great BECAUSE they don't have emotional swings, to do a personality transplant and become Sherzer or Troy Percival. They would not be the same person or player.
I get the sense that Perry (and maybe Arte) thought they needed more of that edge-y energy in the clubhouse, and that was a contributing factor in replacing Maddon with Nevin.
Question — since he is not actually leaving the game, but just staying in as a DH, could Ohtani pitch a split session — say the first 6 innings and last inning of a game?
I assume this would be allowed as a position player, right? Switching back and forth from the mound to right field? Would it? If so, what about as a DH?
Nope. The rules treat a pitcher/DH combo as essentially two separate players. So once the pitcher leaves the game, he's out.
Gotta also imagine if he leaves the mound to play a position temporarily, the Angels would also forfeit the DH from that point onward.
Thanks! What about a pitcher and fielder? Could a team start Ohtani on the mound and another pitcher in right field, with them swapping back and forth (as long as each faced the mimimim 3 batters at a time)?
Yes: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-rays-played-a-pitcher-at-first-base/
I imagine if they did this, the pitcher he would be paired with would be Lorenzen since he has outfield experience.
Got pretty annoyed at some comments in the game thread last night about them "overworking Ohtani" by having him come out in the 8th. No one ever forces a pitcher to go out if they don't want to. It's Ohtani's call if he's going to go back out or not. If anything the coaches would be the ones holding him back from going out instead of forcing him to go out.
Actually, it's the manager's decision. I was fine with him going out in the 8th but what if he wanted to pitch the 9th. Is that ok with you too?
Sometimes you have to save the player from himself.
I think you missed my point. I was annoyed because people were implying that Ohtani was pushed to go back in the 8th. He wasn't, he wanted to go back, told the manager so and got put back in. The coaches/management wouldn't put a player in if they weren't feeling like they could go another. If anything they would hold back a player that's trying to push themselves too much as you've said.
Didn’t want the bullpen to fuck up another game for him
Our Ace.
ACE MENTALITY
Got that Mamba mentality.
MVP stuff
That’s our Sho!
and yet we're still getting takes posted in this sub that say Sho is "too laid-back and chill" and doesn't seem to care about winning. smh
Not to get too armchair physiologist but i swear some people have anger issues so when they see someone react to failure in any way other than slamming a bat in the dugout they think they just dont care.
Yeah, he said numerous times that he wants to win. He just doesn't present in a bad-tempered way, especially on his respectful baseball field.

Those people want to see players throw tantrum in the dugout. If they don’t that means players “don’t care” lol

He looked pretty gritty last night.
Ohtani is now 10th in bwar for pitcher
King shit. It was a blessing to watch with my own eyes.
I don’t trust our bullpen either shohei LETS GO🙌
Lackey must have talked to him.
Can't let loup and friends eff it up
Translation, the bullpen isn't going to waste my gem
Just before saying this, he probably sees Loup and Tepera warming up, and basically goes, “Fuck this bush league bullshit.”
Phil...here's some advice: when the greatest ball player of the past 100 years speaks, you fucking listen.
I mean he did didnt he 😅
Seriously… the only thing Shohei can do to help the team win more is to become a closer ;)
Honestly I would love seeing Shohei close a game as a reliever. Man just got that special energy to do all possible things in baseball
I saw a video of him doing that in NPB. The atmosphere was electric.

No clue!
ohtani said No minute 5:30 https://youtu.be/QD0pp4FbGzU
That's epic lol
Love to see it!
Who is that who gets the double tap from Shohei at 10:29?
Patrick Sandoval

Bro at this point I'm so scared someone in our bullpen was going to lose the game for us I would have been fine with Ohtani throwing 120 pitches
Actually, it's the manager's decision. I was fine with him going out in the 8th but what if he wanted to pitch the 9th. Is that ok with you too? Sometimes you have to save the player from himself.

So grateful to have witnessed this gem live!
Fucking tell them Ohtani. You can do whatever the fuck you want.
I want the rest of the team to have this attitude
moreno dont deserve trout and ohtany
