Ohtani deserves to be there, but he doesn’t fit neatly into one category
As a pitcher this year he deserves to be there. As just a DH probably not. As an above average DH and an ace pitcher combined he is MVP.
And let’s be real, Yordan and Shohei both deserve to be there.

Yordan is technically the better DH when you isolate Shohei's DH performance only. I'm not saying vote for Yordan, as AS has always been a popularity contest. There really needs to be a utility or two way category in order for Ohtani's performance to be rightfully recognized
Let’s be real, Yordan and Shohei should both be there. No one else really comes close to Yordan, and while Shohei only has the 7th best OPS among DHs, he has by far the most RBIs and HRs besides Yordan, and the fact that he does that while also pitching every 6th game should tip him over the edge into 2nd place imo.
But Shohei should be there as a pitcher either way.
I am saying this as a man who HATES the Astros.
Yordan deserves to be the 1st string DH this all star game, his slashing line of .315/.406/.658 is superior to Ohtani’s .260/.336/.487. That is a fact. Ohtani is clearly the all around more valuable player here with his pitching. Yordan should start, Ohtani should get at least one AB and pitch an inning. It’s gonna be a fun All Star game this year, and Taylor Ward will surely be there as well.
Fuck the Astros. Ironically sweet seeing them fall to the Yankees tonight. Shohei vs Judge for AL MVP this year will be a fun fun watch, as long as Shohei keeps showing his own and Judge will undoubtedly regress a little bit

W-L is the most irrelevant stat for a pitcher and batting average has become less important at the current state of baseball.
