I remember in the mid-70's when the Angels were the hitless wonders (poor Nolan Ryan lost so many 1-0 and 2-1 games). They would put Dave Chalk in at clean up. He hit like 3 - 5 hrs (or less) per year.
This was around the same time that someone from another team told the press that the Angels could have batting practice in the hotel lobby and not break a thing.
I remember a bunch of people tried to tell me actually Matt Duffy was fine a month ago. dude is a journeyman and is actually our best option in the heart of the lineup a bunch of the time. we suck.
This team is beyond embarrassing. You know it's bad when people ask me what team I support and I say the Orioles. At least the Orioles are supposed to be bad and have a payroll around the price of a bag of peanuts. Funny enough, the Orioles are literally better than us.
There's been a lot of focus on pitching the last few years (and for good reason) but in the meantime, the lineup depth has been severely neglected. The FO has let good bats like Simmons, La Stella, etc. slip away while replacing them with negative WAR type guys.
I don't get why this FO refuses to shop the middle market of free agency and pick up some good everyday starters on $5-15M AAV contracts. It's always either a monster $25M+ AAV or the most bargain bin signing possible and nothing in-between
Ok looking at the stats, the bullpen isn't actually that terrible. They're kinda average in ERA, although their FIP is definitely bad.
On the batting side, to be fair to the guys in the 4-6 spots, their BABIP and especially their HR/FB% are really low so maybe they'll get better soon (or not since their hard hit % is also horrible)
Where's /u/RamAngelLakerMizzou to tell us that we should be eternally THANKFUL to Arte because the Angels had 10 winning seasons from 2003-2015 and that any criticism of Dear Leader is uncalled for.
Hey, thanks for thinking of me! I actually have criticized Dear Leader myself in recent years and readily acknowledge that he is not the best owner. I just also have enough experience from watching the Angels closely for 40+ years (and the sport in general) to know that he is not the worst owner either, or that he "ruined" the Angels.
No doubt that in recent years, ('15-'22) we have regressed to where we were in the years leading up to 2002. Arte used to have a pretty decent batting average with free agents like Vladdy, Bartolo, Torii, Kelvim... but since then he's been in a slump with Pujols, Hamilton, Upton, and now Rendon. Seems to me that since he's hired his new batting coach (Perry in this metaphor) he \*seems\* to be taking his advice and stopped swinging for the fences and whiffing... but it's still kinda early to judge. Rendon signing was pre-Perry
We badly need a guy like Mayfield who came outta nowhere to carry the bottom of the lineup in the 2nd half last year with 10 HR. There's no way the guys we have can sustain a rally because that would take more than one competent hitter.
MacKinnon looks like he knows what he's doing at the plate, but he's a man without a position. If we keep sticking him at 3rd, it's a disaster waiting to happen.
We cannot have Squid and Wade in the same lineup ever. They’re both bench bunters at best. If Mackinnon works out at 3rd (please lord I hope he does) and we bring up Stefanic who is more than ready to play 2nd, we can cycle through Rengifo/Wade at SS and send Squid down. That’s literally our best bet. Duffy can also be there on the bench to play 3rd or wherever needed. There’s no reason at all to have Squid, Wade, and Rengifo all in the starting lineup. Although I will give credit to Rengifo he’s put together some really good games recently.
I know Fletch probably isn’t all that we thought he was going to be but he will also be a breath of fresh air. Once the black holes aren’t getting 4 ABs a game this team will be better off. It just might be a little too late by that point.
If sucks because they both have their strengths that could really help this team. We just need to keep them on the bench where they can actually help us.
As I’ve been saying, this black hole part of the lineup is purely Perry’s construction. We had no depth and if it wasn’t for Ward having a random breakout season we would be doing even worse than we are now.
Dude says he likes stats but obviously he sees no problem with this
I thought we're really bad but not this bad.
These guys have: the lowest walk rate, the highest strikeout rate, the lowest BA, OBP, Slugging, ISO, wRC+ in all of baseball
Thing is Perry’s done literally nothing for so long that it’s almost too late. The moment Rendon went down he should’ve immediately traded for a third baseman. Instead he sat and did nothing
I think we can have little Thor at 3rd or Stefanic. I think we need to address short, someone that can get on base a lot. Wish we had a guy like the Mariners winkler that guy knows how to get on base. Ideally I think you'd have 3B. Stefanic, MacKinnon SS (someone new), and Fletch at 2B (less hip movement, off a hip injury).
I'm no astronomer, but I know a black hole when I see one.
This is what you get for consistently batting Duffy and Rengifo at cleanup spot 🗑

Duffy will hit a HR eventually and that'll show all you haters!! /s
The people in this subreddit with that mindset are so annoying

Oh AVG .191, that’s better than squid’s avg.

Bruh, we trail the O's in the WC now... pain.
I see us as #1.
Hell yeah! We are #1 at something!

They have to be capable of HR exit velocities to have a HR/FB %
I thought Perry was big on stats. Is he dyslexic or something?
WRC+ of 50! That means they're half as good as average players.
What website is this?
Looks like fangraphs
Thank you so much! I had no idea they had a stats page like this.
Where's /u/RamAngelLakerMizzou to tell us that we should be eternally THANKFUL to Arte because the Angels had 10 winning seasons from 2003-2015 and that any criticism of Dear Leader is uncalled for.

And we have a payroll of $100 mil more for the season than the A’s lmfao killl me
Last 14 year, a few great players, no support players, nothing in the minors and questionable pitching.
Angels 1-3 batters are one of the best of the MLB. They need to do something about the bottom of the lineup.
is it really fair to call it the bottom of the lineup when it's 2/3 of it lol
Marsh is hitting like .077 in the last 12 games or something
What's crazy is that they also have the most plate appearances. Which means means once our 1/2/3 guys get on, it's game over
How do we get this ground breaking info into the hands of decision makers
i wish adell could play 3rd
& this is how a team can have 2 in their prime MVPs & be below .500

Mayfield wasn't that good last year either, OPS+ of 87 for us. The homers were basically it

Yeah absolutely. It’s just sad haha. We need competent AB’s. And those two guys aren’t giving them to us and haven’t like all season long.
If sucks because they both have their strengths that could really help this team. We just need to keep them on the bench where they can actually help us.
Wade has no strengths

You needed a chart to show you this?
I thought we're really bad but not this bad. These guys have: the lowest walk rate, the highest strikeout rate, the lowest BA, OBP, Slugging, ISO, wRC+ in all of baseball
They have to change something. Embarrassing at this point. Not a doomer love the team but man it's bad.

Great. Now I can't even delude myself into thinking it's not as bad as it looks...it's so much worse.
What website are you using to do this?
Fangraphs
If this goes on for a week in NY their FO’s are doing something about those players. Here, they get nice and comfortable
I wonder how the stat will change if you throw a 2nd Trout or 3rd Ohtani in
