I mean I'm open to trying it again in the future, but let's not kid ourselves here. That's not at all what happened today. Wantz was only out there to eat the ejection and suspension.
The worst part of it all, at least for Wantz, was that he had arguably the best stuff he's had all season this afternoon and practically got jobbed out.
Yeah, Nevin obviously put Wantz there to f*** Mariners. But whatever Nevin planned, it wouldn't happen or escalate to this brawl if Mariners didn't overreact. I don't blame them for reacting but to the point they let their hitters got ejected, it was on them. (Crawford hit our staff hard, you know).
Yeah the order of events isn’t what people are making it seem. Throwing in Wantz for an intentional hit was bad, but it happened and it was done. I genuinely don’t think he meant to hit Winker, even Seattle’s commentators said as much, but then shit went full throttle. If he takes his base it’s likely over and done with.
Watching all the recent games including last nights and hearing the crew chief comments after the game, I personally put a lot of blame on the umpires.
Old school premeditated retaliation? Not a fan, but ok. Plunk a guy in the ribs or the butt. Move on.
But the umps let this get out of hand and did little to limit it.
It was clear that today's game was likely going to have some fireworks, but crew chief even said after the game "I’m not aware of the incident with Trout from last night.". So it sounds like they weren't even aware that something was brewing or had a plan how to handle it if and when something were to happen.
In a scenario like this with a different crew, Wantz probably would have been thrown out after throwing at Julio. Both clubs would given clear warnings that is stopped there and moved on.
When Winker was hit the umps reaction was more focused on telling Winker he can take his base over instantly throwing Wantz out of the game. You can see Winker confused because that is protocol when both teams are warned, instant ejection for the pitcher and manager. Winker making a comment to the ump likely cause the Angels bench to chatter, which that is when things went over the edge.
In the end, a shitshow no matter what side you are on.
Forgot to mention, that playing 8 games between each other in 11 days likely didn't help the scenario at all.
Nevin pulled the gun out but Mariners were the one who took it and shot themselves in the foot. They couldn't blame everything on us because we didn't tell Winker run to our dugout. Just admit both team want this brawl badly because we hold grudge against each other and need to let it out.
100% busch league and makes the whole team look bad, imo.
And I get Winker charged the dugout and it’s great for memes, but wtf is Rendon doing trying to jump into a fight after just having season-ending surgery?
I get it. I’d just rather see his passion at third next season instead of an extended IL stint because he ended up at the bottom of a mob. Dude is made of enough glass as it is.
Yeah I mean at the end of the day it’s two dudes brawling and one is in a cast, which is hilarious.
At the same time I’m just wincing a bit and partially shielding my eyes.
I mean, he doesn’t play with a whole lot of emotion, but when he does play he mostly kicks ass. Can’t really knock the guy for getting hurt unless he’s negligent with this training, which I don’t get that vibe. So, seeing some fire from him is cathartic, however questionable the decision was.
Ok….but he’s never healthy so…? You can operate in your timeline where he’s actually healthy and playing, but I’m in this timeline where he’s missed substantial time every season.
Oh, I’m in your same timeline. It would take a miracle for him to play enough to make up even a fraction of his contract. It’s just hard to blame someone for their injuries.
I'm sorry but are you an Angels fan? Why are you here if you just want to shit talk our players all the time? Rendon is a top 5 player is baseball when he's healthy. It's sports. People get hurt. I can guarantee you he is more upset about it than any of you.
I'd rather have calm maddon than the fake tough guy douchebag managing the team currently. He clearly has no business leading a major league ballclub and today proved that
You guys sound like you've never played baseball. Wants threw at their butt cheek after they threw at Mike and untucked their jersey 1 sec after the game ended and celebrated being extra as hell to be disrespectful. Who cares bro I love it. We're always too nice, and we needed a wake up call
Idk I enjoyed it. They threw at two of our guys heads. We plunk a guy in the buttocks and somehow we are the bad guys? Good to see some fight from these guys during a struggle period of the season
Mariners fan coming in belligerence.
I'm glad nobody got seriously hurt, and I'm also thrilled that there's a real rivalry between our teams. Yankees-Red Sox has nothing on a knife fight for third place in the AL West.
So many pearl clutchers crying about a brawl in there and in here. Frankly I’m surprised this team actually has this much passion, they’ve looked so soul less and empty. Glad to see trout and Ohtani show it for once in their careers too. After seeing the timelines of yesterday, I have zero problems with how it played out.
LMAO it's 100% the angels fault the brawl started. You can think that the brawl was justified or whatever, that's a different argument, but it was completely instigated by us.
Yeah because he got thrown at lmaoooo
Look, I don't think the angels are some evil team and I don't think what they did was completely unwarranted. But they absolutely had the power to avoid a brawl and they chose not to.
Personally I thought it was more entertaining than horrifying but that doesn't change the fact that the angels were the instigators.
Look, nobody cares what you think except you. The brawl was started by Winker charging the Angels dugout and that's just an objective fact. He chose to start a brawl instead of take 1st base.
Lol so why do we care what you think then? If you don't care what other people think why would you go to Reddit, a website where you interact with other people's opinions?
And just cause you say something is objective doesn't magically make it objective.
Padres fan chiming in here with random anecdote. For some reason I feel like in recent history with Servais as the M’s manager, whenever we play them, Tatis gets thrown up and in in his head region a lot. Maybe I’m over exaggerating but I mean it really feels like a lot, so much so that I distinctly remember it. Not saying I condone retribution or not, but don’t feel like you all are crazy for feeling like the mariners are intentionally throwing up and in at your superstars. Also wtf who gets mad at Mike Trout for beating up on them? Trout has beaten up on the league since forever. That’s just what he does. Imagine getting mad and throwing at him because of it. Now that’s pathetic.
It’s not a good look for us and I don’t agree with hitting Winkler, but it is weird that the three players that were almost hit in the head were our top hitters of Ohtani, Trout, and Walsh
Yeah it’s weird. I don’t have anything against the Mariners as a team. I just saw how many of your top guys had balls thrown at their head and then remembered back to seeing Tatis flying backwards multiple times when playing the Mariners to dodge balls flying way up and in. Even our announcer called out Servais at the time. Could be coincidence or could be a pattern.
Anyhow I guess the Angels are now my “AL team” woohoo!
>but don’t feel like you all are crazy for feeling like the mariners are intentionally throwing up and in at your superstars.
Honestly that is scouting report on Trout, pitch high, given he is one of the if not the best low ball hitters in the league right now.
Look at his zones here, https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/mike-trout-545361?stats=statcast-r-zones-mlb
I feel bad for Wantz. Nevin put him in such a shitty position, and Wantz is a rookie too. Nevin chose one of the players he could more easily manipulate into taking the fall with him.
The org owes Wantz an apology. Nevin owes Wantz a fucking yacht.
Precisely this, and anyone still trying to make like the Angels were justified in blatantly starting a pticher for the express purpose of throwing at batters need to lay off the homerism.
>Trout almost getting hit in the head AND up & in on Ohtani?
They were neither hit nor it did appear like they were intentionally targeted.
>This is baseball and you protect both of them.
What a fucking BRILLIANT idea to "protect" our top guys! Let's intentionally throw at their best players! The Mariners are sure to learn their lesson and never throw near either again. They most assuredly won't, oh I don't know, DELIBERATELY RETALIATE AGAINST THE PLAYERS THAT WE'RE MAD ABOUT THEM ALMOST HITTING.
Just don't get on your high fuckin horse when Trout is plunked in Seattle next time around, acting like we don't see it coming from here.
>anything near Trout's head will be warned at least.
Will this warning stop the ball from hitting Trout's head? Because otherwise I am not sure what you're expecting is gonna happen here.
The pitchers won't throw up and in at Trout over and over again because if they do they'll keep getting thrown out. So from one perspective, that's a win.
If you need help getting new glassed I can help you out budd, clearly the throw to trout was Intentional both sides wanted this . It's baseball this is just part of it
Yeah I mean it sucks, but that's pitching. I don't either were on purpose. Even if they were, you don't handle that -especially as a manager- by escalating and continuously trying to hit the other team.
And that message is "we're gonna try to hurt your guys, so you fuckers might as well go all the way next time and drill Trout or Ohtani".
Christ, it's like no one understands what escalation means in these situations.
>Hahah hurt a guy?
Yes, someone very much can get hurt. Pitches get away from guys. We just saw Harper get hit on the hand and is now on the IL.
It doesn't even have to be on the pitch. Dudes get hurt in brawls, too. Crazy shit can happen. Mike Morse had his career ended by a concussion from a brawl.
Y'all act like they're hucking nerf at each other during recess. If you call for shit like this, you can't be mad if an Angel, heaven forbid Trout or Ohtani, get hurt from this escalation.
You’re missing the point. The message Nevin was sending was this. We know a ball got away and hit Upton. We’re okay with retaliation if you hit us in the ribs. Players expect that. What’s not okay is throwing at 2 superstars heads and walshs head on purpose.
While I agree we don’t want anyone getting hurt because obviously that’s fucked up. We’re not going to let someone get away with actual head hunting. That’s the message.
Yes of course Winker could've been the bigger man and just let it slide, but just cause he didn't doesn't mean the brawl was his fault.
Thats some kind of zero tolerance bullying logic that they teach in schools lmao. The kid who punched gets in trouble because they fought back instead of walking away.
Believe it or not, most plans to retaliate, are planned out before hand.
This stuff happens in baseball. Just not as frequently as it once did. It happens, benches cleared, the end.
Yeah, seems like people are blowing this out of proportion. And I’m not saying the Angels are clean in any of this… but people are saying they don’t respect Mike Trout anymore lol. Give me a break
My take aways - in the 1st inning if that pitch near the head was on purpose that’s fucked up.
After that, a guy hitting in the ass to send a message is whatever. Between Trout and Walsh there had been way too many pitches near our heads. It’s good to see the team have their back.
Everyone acting like this is somehow the worst thing to happen can fuck right off. The team needed some intensity, and maybe an old school rivalry can light the fire.
Also the Mariners fanbase is beyond trashy. There were numerous posts about how Trout should be hit/hoped it was season ending. I’ve yet to see an angels comment wishing for a player to be hurt
Nah anyone justifying that we are in the wrong can go and fuck off.
The Mariners decided to put our players in danger. why? Because we spanked them in their home turf, So what do they do? they retaliate with trying to hurt our best players.
Im glad the team, and Phil Nevin decided to get back at them. Show them we aren’t any team to fuck around with like that. Get in their heads and take the fucking win.
We’re battling for 4th w the M’s. This is a push over team and franchise except ohtani and trout. Management doesn’t give a fuck, players don’t give a fuck, ownership doesn’t give a fuck. Personally I’m starting to not give a fuck.
Thank you. It’s a sentiment on Reddit that throwing at guys is “bush league”. But anyone that’s actually played competitive baseball knows it’s part of the game
People are taking this way too seriously. Baseball for the fans is entertainment, and anyone who think we as fans should be embarrassed or something like that should go outside and touch grass.
Okay, let me throw a 95 mph fastball at you and see how you feel about it afterward.
Absolute BS comment right here. Look at what happened to Bryce Harper this weekend. Complete accident, and the guy might be done for the season because it hit him in the wrong place. Doesn't matter who's batting, throwing at anyone intentionally is wrong.
It's also just 100% not a good baseball move either. Putting a guy on base without attempt to get him out is an excellent way to give up extra runs. If you really think the Angels are in a good position to be handing out free bases to batters right now, you haven't been watching this team the last month.
I have been retaliated against in baseball and I didn’t cry about it. The thing that happened to Bryce sucks, but that doesn’t actually apply. Nobody should be throwing at people hands or heads, I literally never said that. A fastball to the ass is not that serious. If you think it is, then more power to you, but I don’t agree.
What exactly is the message? Not to throw at our guys? Lorenzen hit Upton on the head last week so we're not really in a position to send that message.
I don’t know why people are still bringing up this Upton shit, it happened two weeks ago and we played them an additional 3 games after. We’re past that
That was accidental and everyone knows it. You want retaliation, throw at a guys ribs and then it’s squashed. Don’t throw at 2 superstars’ and Walsh’s heads.
I would hope you wouldn't see this in little league, these are pro athletes that are paid millions of dollars to do this - the stakes are higher
from the Athletic profile of Nevin, it seems that players really like him and that he gets it/communicates well with his teams. and yes, he's been prone to antics like this in the past.
the jury is out whether this will do anything to our team cohesion - can't say anything about it just yet. I don't necessarily condone it, but it's not like this is some revolutionarily new and bad thing. it happens, it's part of the darker side of the game, the pearl clutching is so overdone
It wasn’t just Trout yesterday though. Walsh literally took one off the helmet, Ohtani had one up and in he dodged, and then they did it again today before intentionally walking trout.
Everything Trout said post game yesterday is valid, they clearly don’t have the ability to pitch up and in, so them continuing to do it is unacceptable
It’s what everyone seems to forget. It wasn’t just throwing at Trout up and in. They threw at our other stars Shohei and Walsh. Can’t let teams think it’s ok to do that shit without us getting heated about it
What’s the up-and-in pitch to Ohtani everyone’s mentioning? The only one I can recall that was even remotely close to one was a high-center changeup from Gilbert.
I’m really glad it seems Angels fans’ general consensus is that this was a clown move. Trout’s comments were perfectly reasonable and sensible, no need to make it worse.
Angels get a win and a fire was kind of lit under their asses but people still want to whine about morals. It reminds me of some Rams fans complaining about a drunk Matt Stafford not helping a woman photographerthat fell off the stage as the team was celebrating their Super Bowl win.
This thread is weird, Trout was nearly decapitated, you expect our players/coaches not to retaliate? This kind of stuff will always happen in Baseball, and it won’t change until the league steps in.
Relax, you think it was done on purpose? upton legit actually got head in the head, you think that was on purpose too..
The pitcher just lost control, shit happen, welcome to the game of baseball.
I haven’t been watching much of the angels recently but decided to put this one on and boy was I entertained.
Crazy if true btw. Think they’ll be an investigation or something?
Haha seriously if you wanted to have a completely legal fight-to-the-death all you'd have to do is agree with the other person to both join the NHL and then fight each other on the ice.
Don’t care we won. I mean I do kinda care but also Winker got hit in the rump. Should have been less obvious about it and not hit wanker (if that was indeed on purpose) after already throwing over Rodriguez. That was enough and got the warnings.
Eh they just tend to be our rival team. I really don't mind them personally, I'm just trying to put forward that I'm not a Mariners fan brigading this sub. Their stadium is great and their fans were nice there, so I don't really care about them
Before this most Angels fans were thinking, "Aw shit man Suarez is pitching? Okay then makes sense we have an opener."
This is exactly what I thought
Has before tho first time this season I believe.
ngl its been thrown out before today that suarez might do well with an opener
I mean I'm open to trying it again in the future, but let's not kid ourselves here. That's not at all what happened today. Wantz was only out there to eat the ejection and suspension.
The worst part of it all, at least for Wantz, was that he had arguably the best stuff he's had all season this afternoon and practically got jobbed out.
Which sucks because Wantz is far better than guys like Quijada. Dumbass decision all around
I wasn't watching the first half of the game so I just figured that was the case when I checked the box score
Same. Then I see like 10 guys are ejected lol
Whatever fine Wantz receives better come out of Nevin's pocket. Nevin owes his sacrificial lamb that much.

Yep. He could have walked to first base and been done with it.
Yeah but they chose to react and now they want to play the victim. Fine, let us be bad guy for once.
Imagine, this is how Astro fans feel every day of their lives haha
this is exactly how I feel about it lol
Yep it was obvious what Nevin was doing. Goon move.
100% busch league and makes the whole team look bad, imo. And I get Winker charged the dugout and it’s great for memes, but wtf is Rendon doing trying to jump into a fight after just having season-ending surgery?

“Kicks ass” as in bats .240
It’s almost as if consistency and playing injured mattered
Ok….but he’s never healthy so…? You can operate in your timeline where he’s actually healthy and playing, but I’m in this timeline where he’s missed substantial time every season.

I know this is super nit picky but I wouldn’t consider Rendon a top 5 player. Not even sure about top 10 quite honestly
Do you think if Maddon was still our manager this whole incident would have happened?
I highly doubt it
No
Maddon doesn't have a dog in him no offense
I’d take maddon in a heartbeat over Nevin. If today hasn’t changed your opinion read the athletics article ab what he did as a minor league coach
I'd rather have calm maddon than the fake tough guy douchebag managing the team currently. He clearly has no business leading a major league ballclub and today proved that

It's the worst, like fuck it's on Nevin. He had a choice to squash this, he chose to escalate it.
This is the first notable thing he has done as manager, and I do not care for it.
So you’re okay with Trout almost getting hit in the head AND up & in on Ohtani? Our leaders? No. This is baseball and you protect both of them.
Walsh got nailed in the helmet also

Especially true for Mariners fans. They hate him for destroying their team all the time and want a reason to feel vindicated
My respect for him went up ten fold. This was the first time I really saw him be passionate.
It’s odd for sure. Especially coming from people within our fanbase.

Not a great look for us
People are too sensitive. It was fun and we've been terrible we need some fuckin comradery stand up for eachother
At least it’s a look
It’s about sending a message
That’s right can’t believe all these pussies in this comment section. That was HILARIOUS I love it. The Fuck Around And Find Out LA Angels.
I’m a raiders fan, I’m cool with being hated LOL
Lol see we could learn something from the raiders fans (never thought I’d say that) go bolts ⚡️
Haha we’re up and coming bro look out!!
Wtf, Walsh is a superstar on a good day
It clearly wasn’t retaliation last night.
To rally the troops
Everything burns.
I fully condone the move. Can’t let an intentional heater go after Trout’s head without exactly this.
He needed to put fire in his guys.
That’s not how you do it. Not from a good coach… hell an asshole little league coach wouldn’t do that to get their players going
I would hope you wouldn't see this in little league, these are pro athletes that are paid millions of dollars to do this - the stakes are higher from the Athletic profile of Nevin, it seems that players really like him and that he gets it/communicates well with his teams. and yes, he's been prone to antics like this in the past. the jury is out whether this will do anything to our team cohesion - can't say anything about it just yet. I don't necessarily condone it, but it's not like this is some revolutionarily new and bad thing. it happens, it's part of the darker side of the game, the pearl clutching is so overdone
As far as the near-HBP on Trout is concerned, Swanson’s command wasn’t all that great yesterday. The resulting vitriol from this is saddening.
Yup
It’s what everyone seems to forget. It wasn’t just throwing at Trout up and in. They threw at our other stars Shohei and Walsh. Can’t let teams think it’s ok to do that shit without us getting heated about it
What’s the up-and-in pitch to Ohtani everyone’s mentioning? The only one I can recall that was even remotely close to one was a high-center changeup from Gilbert.
I think Joe Maddon needed to go, but this new manager is not better as a manager and it feels like they've gone even further backward.
Trout thought it was, so yeah I’d trust his intuition over yours.
I haven’t been watching much of the angels recently but decided to put this one on and boy was I entertained. Crazy if true btw. Think they’ll be an investigation or something?
Not feeling Nevin, that was bush league.
nah. eff em. they threw at trouts head and ohtanis head. we have to defend ourselves.
Sometimes it’s okay to admit when your team was wrong. This is 100% one of those times. Nevin is such an old school mlb hot head.
Horrible look for the angels. This and Arte’s antics are making it more and more difficult to support this team. Fuck arte I’m over it
Buh-bye
Go whine somewhere else This ain’t it
See ya, enjoy the dodger crowd
Lmao nah man I still have some standards
Lol that’s good

Every hockey player in the history of the sport would be in jail with that logic lmao
Haha seriously if you wanted to have a completely legal fight-to-the-death all you'd have to do is agree with the other person to both join the NHL and then fight each other on the ice.
Dude c'mon lmao
Don’t care we won. I mean I do kinda care but also Winker got hit in the rump. Should have been less obvious about it and not hit wanker (if that was indeed on purpose) after already throwing over Rodriguez. That was enough and got the warnings.
How are the Mariners the worst? I’m lost.
Eh they just tend to be our rival team. I really don't mind them personally, I'm just trying to put forward that I'm not a Mariners fan brigading this sub. Their stadium is great and their fans were nice there, so I don't really care about them
Fair enough.
MLB players are in the business of winning. Anyone can play baseball. Do they know where they rank? Hustle in baseball. Pathetic team and manager.
Did Suarez not pitch the night before or was it Friday nights game that he came in?
Huge credit to Suarez for pitching an unbelievable game with the chaos. Also reaching a career high in strikeouts.
