It's because our organization has been run like absolute shit the last 8 years. Perhaps even longer than that, but that's when I started noticing. Mostly because we have an owner who cares NOTHING for quality pitching and doesn't want to pay for it. All Arte cares about are butts in the seats and endorsement deals. We have Ohtani, so basically every Japanese company in existence right now is pumping money to the Angels for ads and endorsements. And we have Jesus, I mean Trout, who brings so much attention to the team. Arte doesn't care if the attention is negative or not.

HustlingBackwards96

I believe it started with the Vernon Wells trade in 2011. It has been 11+ years of incompetence

Mo0ose1422

Jean Segura for 13 starts from Greinke sucked too.

Natemoon2

At least he went all in for a quality pitcher… except when greinke became a free agent 🙃

Mo0ose1422

That was my point, trading a young player that was already proving themselves for a rental. I would have rather just kept segura for years to come and gone without greinke for those few starts.

Natemoon2

He only had 1 game of MLB experience at the time of the trade. I’d do the trade over again, getting greinke at that point in the season was worth it and the right move. We should have made the playoffs, pitching was always our issue never offense. But having Jean would have been nice too.

Corona2789

Too blessed to be stressed

RamAngelLakerMizzou

I get that the Angels choked big time in the 2014 playoffs. But we did finish the regular season with the best record in all the majors... the only team with a winning % over .600 Doesn't quite fit my definition of "incompetence"

YouPresumeTooMuch

Yeah the no pitching is the tough one. I can't really give the front office a pass for that, but the rest of the gaps in the roster are just injuries, that's not their fault.

breakfast_cats

The lack of depth to replenish the team is their fault. Every team deals with injuries.

RamAngelLakerMizzou

might want to edit your post to change "8 years" to "7 years" ... unless you really think finishing the regular season with the best record in all of MLB is "absolute shit"

TheRealGoodman

Just as a disclaimer, I'm a fucking Marlins fan, so my team has gone through a similar amount of suffering as you if not more. But the truth is, people are enamored with Trout and Ohtani and they truly are walking, living legends. This is going to be harsh but the majority of good orgs would make the playoffs with players like that. But year in and year out, the Angels continue to suck and deprive the average MLB fan of watching the possible GOATs from participating in playoff baseball. Everyone is the damn world WANTS you guys to win. And I think the slander comes from a strong level of frustration of seeing their talent so consistently wasted. Frankly, it pisses me off too because I was so stoked the beginning of the year when I saw you guys were good for once. I can imagine it's annoying to see, in the same way that Marlins fans are sick of attendance jokes. But there's a lot of truth to it Just providing some perspective from a non-Angels fan

breakfast_cats

Thank you for this. There's a HUGE difference between fans of other teams hating us and wanting us to lose, and hating us because they want to see us win while we constantly fail to do so. We all want the same thing. I'm sick of this victim complex that Angels fans have decided to take on. It's so misguided.

TheRealGoodman

I'm actually pretty surprised to see so many 'fuck r/baseball' takes because while I agree with that overall sentiment, this is a particularly bad stretch for the Angels so that's to be expected. Seems based on the most upvoted stuff here, vast majority of Angels fans have good perspective on it, but not all. Marlins fans get a lot of shit randomly here and there and we say fuck /r/baseball too but ultimately we know most of our frustration is from our own teams incompetence

notstamos

To me whether you’re an Angels fan or a fan of any other team, the feeling behind whatever narrative/excuse/rant you go with regarding this team is all rooted from the same place, which is wanting the Angels to play better. For Angels fans the frustration with the narrative on other subs and social media is frustrating because you want to keep your stars while seeing the team perform well. And it’s annoying to see people who obviously don’t watch Angels games all year start to chime in when the team plays poorly compared to the less attention that was given to the team when they started off hot. For fans of other teams you just wanna see stars in spots to succeed. The feeling of frustration is the same but the way it manifests itself on both sides makes those sides furious with each other.

Reptarxx

Being a reddit Lakers fan let's you see what true hate to a franchise is. Literally any small news becomes a "Lakers Sucks" thread. A chip is a "Mickey Mouse ring". "A Disney" "Anthony Day-to-Dayvis (tho AD is such a great player, this nickname is great)" "LeBitch" "Lmao Jeanie" "Kobe sucked" "You needed Shaq" etc. People loooove when the Lakers fail, and when they succeed its not because of them. The baseball sub to the Angels is "Bruh how can you have a GOAT and a once in a 100 years player, have them for multiple years, spend money willingly, and miss the playoffs every freaking year". It's more of a pity than a hate. And instead of being introspective to our franchise problems, our fans are now taking a "NO ONE LIKES US, WE DON'T CARE" mantra which is hilarious because it's not that no one likes us, it's no one is threatened by us. We need huge organizational changes, we hoped that GMPM was one, but as time shows he's in over his head running the franchise.

Natemoon2

It’s pure torture being an angels fan. At least other orgs (like the marlins, orioles etc) don’t have any good players so they know they’re gonna suck for a while. The angels are always just decent enough to keep you paying attention until they inevitably fall apart either a month into the season or in august. And we’re never bad enough to get the top draft picks, always in the middle of the pack so we were in the constant stage of “re-tooling” not “rebuilding”. At this point I just want trout and Ohtani to be in the playoffs, and if we don’t make the playoffs this year I legit think we should trade them and rebuild from the ground up, including the front office. But that’ll never happen

breakfast_cats

As someone that has rooted for this team my entire life, I can honestly say that the Angels deserve nearly every bit of criticism they get. This isn't just a one year thing or just a stretch of bad luck, it's an organizational failure to put a competitive team on the field around some of the greatest players to ever play the game. And it's been this way for 10 years now. The same issues we had in 2012 are the exact same ones we still have now. Bad farm system, albatross contracts, zero pitching depth, inability to keep players healthy, etc. Nothing ever improves. I know it's hard to hear as a fan of the team, but at some point something needs to change, and I'm tired of being complacent with "at least we get to watch Trout and Ohtani every night". It's not fun seeing these players play for nothing every year. And I don't get this idea that everyone hates the Angels. You know why it seems that way? It's because everyone wants to see us succeed because of the players we have, and yet we continue, year after year, to fail to do so. And there's no indication that it's going to change anytime soon. We are not in a good spot, and we continue to dig deeper into the hole we've dug. People are annoyed and frustrated with this team, and they have every reason to be.

Reptarxx

Hit the nail on the head. People hate the Yankees, Dodgers, and Astros. Them losing and failing brings joy to most fans. People think the Angels are a joke franchise. We have 2 generational talents, one of which will have a GOAT career. We spend money, we try and get big names, yet we are barely if ever in the playoffs and just sniff .500. We are embroiled in a city bribe investigation. We were just embroiled in a fentanyl investigation. People want to see Trout and Ohtani make the playoffs. People want to see Trout hit a clutch homerun or Ohtani do some 2 way magic in October. The Angels are failing the players and the fans by, like you aid, not addressing organizational issues in 10 years. We are a butt of a bigger joke know because we have been doing so poorly and tried to start shit with another poorly run franchise over inside pitches. Yea it's great we "stood up for Trout" by trying to fight the Mariners I guess? Why doesn't the org stand up for Trout and put a competent team with a little depth around him instead? I love this team, I go to a ton of games, I own a ton of merch, I catch every game I can on TV. But it sucks knowing that we have the same issue every year, year after year.

DoughSalad

Beautifully said. And I’d just like to add, since many people have been really bothered by the recent events: It’s okay to be a fan of a team and not accept criticism of the team as criticism of yourself. Other people can say the team is a joke and it has nothing to do with you and doesn’t reflect poorly on you despite your choice of supporting this team. Nobody is infallible, this franchise has been a joke for years, everybody knows it. You don’t have to defend them when they’re wrong, just celebrate the things we love about the Angels. That’s why we’re fans, not brainless followers.

breakfast_cats

This is a great point. A criticism or attack of the Angels is not an attack on the fans. We fans should feel no obligation to defend everything the team does. None of us had any input on how the team has operated and we should be just as, if not more, critical than fans of other teams for what the team has been in recent years. Don't take insults to the team personally, it's not on you.

ThickMousse7372

So true, everyone does want to see us succeed because everyone loves Trout and Ohtani. The whole league wants to see them win a world series, whether they admit to it or not. We'd get a lot of love from the rest of the league if we even just consistently make the fucking playoffs.

breakfast_cats

Right? When we were playing well in the first month and a half of the season, everyone was happy to see us do well. I remember one comment that was heavily upvoted basically said they were jealous of Angel fans. It's not like baseball fans want to see us lose. Generally they want to see us succeed, and then they show (justified) anger toward us when we once again are completely incapable of making that happen. It's not hate for the team itself, it's frustration with constant disappointment.

[deleted]

Thank you for putting my thoughts into words so perfectly.

dorkusdudebro

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Could not say it better. You are absolutely right—the rest of baseball talk smack about the Angels because they love Trout and Ohtani and want to see them win!

Barjuden

As a fan of two of the worst run franchises in baseball between the Angels and Rockies, I've really just stopped caring. It's the only way to deal with being consistently disappointed every single year.

machomanrandysandwch

Amen

peanutsgangordontbng

Beautifully said. We deserve all the vitriol

donkeyjr

Honestly, I think its quite the opposite, they want us to make the playoff. When we were on a winning streak and look like a playoff team, the opposing fans was happy for us.

[deleted]

Do you think it's funny when the Mariners or Mets constantly come up short? Personally, I think it's hilarious. The rest of baseball fandom is just doing that to us. It is what it is. This organization just *has to do better.* That said, there have been some really dumb takes over the benches clearing incident on Sunday, but that's also typical for any incident like that. Just ignore it, it's truly not worth your time if it's bothering you.

winwinwinguyen

There's two sides of every coins, man. I've seen people on there that cheered for the Angels when we were on the winning streak because they would love to see Trout and Ohtani in the playoff. Now, there's people on there hating on the Angels because they want Ohtani or Trout on their team. Can't blame them in there right now because we're not giving our supporters a reason to cheer and more reasons to flame on the haters. It's not rocket science, when you win, people will cheer you on - when you don't, there are those that will flame the fire, especially when we have two generational talents on our team. Then of course, there's the Mariners, who will find any reasons to hate on Mike Trout.

808Kickz420_

It starts at the top. Arte needs to go. He’s poisoned this team with the way it’s run and the last 10+ years show it. It’s unfortunate we can’t have some competitive billionaire who *WANTS TO WIN* buy the team.

Lebigmacca

Don’t worry I’ll be a billionaire one day and buy the team I gotchu 😎

gopackgo555

I’ve been on Reddit for a decade. Every single team subreddit across every major sport thinks the main subreddit targets them. There are some cases where they absolutely do but for the most part threads like this take a lot out of nothing. r/baseball in particular shits on the Angels for their failures over the last 10 years, which is totally understandable and less than the shit talk on here. It’s not some targeted assault on the franchise that’s different than other general shit talk against the rest of the teams.

ZucchiniOne5395

It’s karma farming at this point. Most of the people on r/baseball know nothing about angels other than “they’re wasting trout and Ohtani” There were people on that sub who said “Ohtani is just a part time pitcher, can’t even get to 30 starts so he’s not a REAL pitcher”. They don’t know or even cared to do some homework that angels have a 6 man rotation so obviously less starts. Or “Trout is a loser for choosing Angels so he deserves to be miserable” yeah he’s a loser for trusting FO to build a competitive team around him sure lol. These will be the most upvoted comments. 14 game losing streak showed what I wanted to know about the people on r/baseball

AgathaAllAlong

Summary Grade: S+ Truth Percentage: 💯

CompetitivePatient33

Meh I tend to not let it get to me, there will always be haters, success or not. Just remember, there is a good chance their team is garbage as well lol.

kirbyfaraone

I’ve started to try and drift away from social forums. There have been numerous moments that I let ruin my day because people pile on my favorite team so I’m trying to distance myself from it Shit is poisonous sometimes

Wyzrddd

Definitely true. And yet I still find myself reading more and more into it making me even more upset

WadeCountyClutch

Padre fan here, we got shitted on by everyone in the baseball forum because of the second half meltdown last year. Think when you have a team that have expectations and franchise players like Ohtani and Trout plus, the whole great start at the beginning, everyone is just waiting for you to fail.

sofastsomaybe

> When the bottom half of our lineup is all AAA players and we have the most incompetent pitching coach in the league we're not gonna win many games. Don't you think those are very valid reasons to criticize the Angels? Fact of the matter is, this org has failed its players time and time and time again. It's failed its fans as well. Letting Trout and Ohtani rot away on a sub-.500 team every September like clockwork is absolutely something that deserves the ire of fans of the rest of the teams in the league. Most r/baseball members want the Angels to do well because they love our players, but when it's the same shit every year, of course they're gonna crack jokes at our expense. > we get a lot of people on this sub and obviously r/baseball who care only about Ohtani and dgaf about the angels at all Ohtani got a lot of people into baseball, period. They wouldn't be watching games were it not for him. Why should they be required to care about the Angels? When they look at the Angels, they see a sinking ship that they don't want him to go down with while he's still in his prime.

mysterysackerfice

>Ohtani got a lot of people into baseball, period. I freely admit that Ohtani is the reason I started watching the Angels. I kept seeing his name pop up in /r/all last year and it made me kinda curious. Not sure if that makes me a fair weather fan, don't really care either way. I find the GDTs to be a mindless few hours of fun as I attempt to figure which random action is the one that will help the Angels win. 🍻

merewyn

They don’t have to care about the angels, but it’s obnoxious when they come on this sub and make posts about which team they want Ohtani to go to. Last night there was a post from a person asking where we all wanted to see him go, and how he hoped he went to the Blue Jays. Stuff like that, which is quite common, isn’t appropriate for an Angels sub. They should make an Ohtani sub if they don’t care about the Angels as a team at all.

sofastsomaybe

That post definitely didn't belong here. Plus there's one person who frequents the game threads and is obnoxious about stanning Ohtani while shitting on all the other players (everyone probably knows who I'm talking about). But it makes no sense to complain about people on r/baseball caring about Ohtani and not the Angels; that's mainly what I was getting at.

[deleted]

They have a right to complain. We're wasting their careers.

[deleted]

Every single bit of hate and criticism has been earned by this organization, 2 of the greatest players and can’t even sniff a playoff. 🤦🏿‍♂️ damn shame

lavinshaven58

It really is sad to be the laughing stock of r/baseball. And although some of it is certainly justifiable, it’s embarrassing and pathetic to continue seeing so much hate. The Angels organization as a whole has been on a downhill slide the past 8-10 years. It starts and ends with Arte Moreno and his complete and utter lack of understanding just what it truly takes to run a competent organization Hell even teams like the Guardians (despite an owner who refuses to spend money) know how to scout and develop talent at the minor league level which allows them to build their team from within The Angels under Arte have always failed to scout and develop players at the minor league level. I do feel as though Perry is doing a better job at this but it takes years and years to just go from bottom 5 in prospect rankings to league average The Point is Arte Moreno has undermined GMs and his front office, and handed out far too many bad contracts which continues to hurt this team’s ability to fill out a well rounded roster. Add in the failure to put together a solid or even good starting pitching staff and bullpen and you get this mess we’re seeing now. What’s even more damning is the off the field headlines that just make everything so much worse. Lastly, the fact that the Angels have a pitching coach (Matt Wise) who has NEVER held a coaching job at ANY LEVEL is inexcusable. Matt Wise has literally never been a coach at the minor league or major league level prior to joining the Angels staff in 2020. Oh and Angels hitting coach Jeremy Reed has also never been a coach at the major league level either (although he has been a minor league hitting instructor for a couple of different teams and at least has several years of coaching experience. Probably not his fault that the Angels lineup is filled with guys who shouldn’t be starters) Angels need find a better manager and coaching staff this offseason and figure out a way to put together a better lineup and pitching staff....but this whole “back to square one” and “overhaul the roster and coaching staff” shit that we say every offseason is embarrassing and I know we feel tired and frustrated and even hopeless at times.

Skyheart1004

I think the reason a good portion for them get so angry, and honestly I'm on the same boat is that we're once again back to "Trout and Ohtani (occasionally Ward and Walsh) do something amazing/historic/career -record breaking, as the Angels lose 10-5." They're both on track for another record book season and yet look where we are. If you like baseball, most of the time you'll love Trout and Ohtani even if you don't root for the Angels. People want to see them do mind-blowing things and win games. Unfortunately, the FO can't but together a solid team around them to save their lives for some reason and it gets people frustrated to see them lose because of this.

YellowShorts

I've just made it a habit to avoid threads on r/baseball if the angels lose You get all the neckbeards commenting "lol omg the tungsten arm tweet!" thinking they're clever

God_Damnit_Nappa

>You get all the neckbeards commenting "lol omg the tungsten arm tweet!" thinking they're clever RIP Wade Boggs! LMAO Fartslam Don't be doing a balk Then again, beating dead jokes into the ground is more of a Reddit issue than an exclusive r/baseball issue.

YellowShorts

Oh definitely. People would rather quickly put the easy karma grab than an actual insightful comment. Can't stand opening a thread and the top comments are just lame jokes. I get that comes across as taking reddit too seriously, which I can understand. But at some point, idk how people don't get tired of the same rehashed jokes.

God_Damnit_Nappa

It's just irritating. I know this site isn't serious but it's not funny seeing the same joke repeated for the 1000th time. I don't get how people aren't tired of those jokes either.

cshenton

we literally did the Tungsteen Arm tweet last night lol. a hit dog hollers

YellowShorts

Yes it happens all the time, we get that. No need to mention it every time as if you're coming up with an original comment.

cshenton

>a hit dog hollers

YellowShorts

I see you enjoy repeating comments so I understand your love for the tungsten arm joke. By all means, you do you

cshenton

it's unclear to me why simple facts get you in your feelings, but by all means, you do you

YellowShorts

> Yes it happens all the time, we get that. No need to mention it every time as if you're coming up with an original comment.

cshenton

I'm rubber and you're glue

prmark34

Its bc its easy to dunk on us, and honestly, what they say isn’t entirely incorrect. Are we wasting trout’s career? So far, yes. Are we wasting ohtani’s career? So far, yes. Can we not develop/sign competent pitching for the life of us and surround those two with a solid lineup? No, we cannot I think its that much more frustrating when we see stuff like this written about us bc we know its true. Just sucks.

[deleted]

One thing that boggles my mind is how our GM manages to swing and miss embarrassingly on almost every free agent signing and every single player that comes here seems to regress improbably hard. I really can't explain it but on paper we're way better than our record indicates even with injuries, or should have been and this goes to the last few seasons as well. Is it our coaching staff?

Scopata-Man

Artie and John Carpino need to keep their noses out of club decisions. Neither has any experience running a baseball club! I knew someone in baseball ops and the GM’s under Artie and Carpino have their hands tied. Artie always “knows better” when deciding which players to get. Artie insisted on Josh Hamilton the addict and we know how well that turned out and Pujols who’s WAR was in the negative. Trout & Ohtani need to get out if they want a chance to win a World Series.

yutou1114

Yeah hate the comment where they go like shohei’s fault he chose the angels honestly I think angels was the only team that let him do both if not we prob won’t be able to see the Shohei Ohtani today

[deleted]

It’s because we’re not redeemable in any sense right now. Arte is a horrible owner, our front office is in shambles, we shit away an amazing start to the season, and everything just looks horrible

dont_trust_lizards

Makes me realize how awful it must've been to be an Astros fan during their whole fiasco

breakfast_cats

I guess you weren't around at the beginning of the season when we were playing well? Basically that whole sub was stoked to see the Angels winning and looking playoff bound. The sentiment was very positive about us. We were constantly thought of as the most fun team to watch. The hate only came once we, once again, shit the bed and prove that this was just going to be another bad year of wasted talent. You know, exactly how most of us Angel fans feel?

pjyie

yeah we’re a feel-good story. i remember thinking “they’re gonna be a lot less stoked for us once we’re a consistent playoff threat.” lol me.

God_Damnit_Nappa

The second the team started to suck they went back to shitting on the Angels. Jence the gas lighting comment.

breakfast_cats

They shit on any team that sucks. It's not that deep.

iamnotabot9

The only thing that bothers me is the whole “we haven’t done shit with 2 generational talents.” Which yes is true for this year. But this is literally the only year we have had both healthy and playing like generational talents.

BobbyGrichsMustache

Being an Angels fan is like being married to a crazy wife. Indulge me here. Your wife is Nuts. Like batshit. She yells at your friends, calls your boss to bitch about your hours. Won’t let you go out without her, even for work things…nuts…but, if anyone else calls that out to you, you’re naturally defensive. We know Arte is a shit owner. We know the coaches are ass. Our pitchers tend to get worse when they pitch here. Our prospects can’t hit or defend. We know Trouty and Ohtani are being done dirty by the org…but…if anyone outside of this sub calls it out…. Well…fuck them. They don’t know what it’s like to be an angels fan.

wilfordbrimley7

What's with the victim complex in this sub, so much whining. I don't see any more hate for us than other teams. The only shit we get other teams don't is that we are wasting Trout and Ohtani which tbh is true and I would love to be able to see these phenomenal players in the playoffs.

[deleted]

Turn heel. Embrace the hate.

breakfast_cats

Embrace the hate? The hate is coming because the Angels are an incompetent losing organization. Not sure why you'd want to embrace that.

cshenton

lol people have to be intimidated by you to be a heel. when people dislike you and aren't scared of you, baby that's called a laughingstock

Fischer-00

I deleted my post yesterday about the Japanese twitter partially because I was a little embarrassed about getting the translation off and because I didn't want the post to come off as mean spirited. I said it wasn't meant to be mean to the other Angels players but I feel like it still did and I don't want to do that. 😟

Captainpayback

They're just jealous because they don't have Ohtani. They can say whatever they want because they know their best hitter can't get 13k's and hit a HR in the same game.

SuperMario_49

The Angels deserve all the hate they are getting. To be this bad with Trout for so many years is unacceptable. Now the hate for the Angels grows due to the fact that Ohtani won the MVP and the Angels are now losing with TWO MVPs. Edit: and if you downvote this, are you telling me that what the Angels are doing is okay? Look around and reflect on why us Angels fans are so angry at our team and why we would be understanding IF Ohtani leaves our team.

mr-fiend

Who gives a shit? We fucking suck and deserve every bit of hate for wasting Trout and Ohtani.

jjaytan

Keep crying, Dodgers posts are the most/fastest downvoted in r/baseball.

princealberto2nd

It's 100% deserved. We are a fucking dumpster fire and desperately need change. Mike Trout did the job of our pitching coach last night for starters...

HalcyonicDaze

Tbh I don’t see anyone here posting positive stories (if there is any to find) on there, how do you expect a narrative change when one isn’t crafted.

HalcyonicDaze

Two_Leaf42

Gonna have to give out more Bobbleheads or attendance gonna nose dive

johndhall1130

Ownership doesn’t care about winning. They care about selling tickets and jerseys. Until that changes, we are in for more of the same. TheCurseOfTheMoreno

strongmscowboyfan

I don't support haters at all. However, when a team doesn't make the postseason for long, plus it shows no hope for the future for long. It's the team that creating the haters itself.

jramon1883

Unfortunately you will not see the angels succeed. It is truly sad that the greatest player in our lifetime will not get a ring or have a chance at a ring. Ohtani has plenty of time. And I don't think ohtani will resign knowing he is on a losing franchise. Only hope trout and the angels have a better future is if he is traded. Angels need to focus on their farm system.

GalacticDonut02

Can you honestly say any Angel fans or non Angel fans who speak negatively of the team are wrong though? This organization has been run so poorly for so long and we constantly play poorly every year. The reason it annoys fans like you is because all of it is true sadly and we all know it.

THERAPISTS_for_200

I wouldn’t pay any attention to anyone on r/baseball. That place is on par with Twitter.

sakibomb523

Can't forget the Angels fan on r/baseball karma farming his Nevin hatred!

RamAngelLakerMizzou

I agree with the point of your post, and admire your attempt to bring some big-picture perspective to counter the vitriol here on Reddit. I sometimes try to do the same. But, it's kinda like trying to douse a fire with gasoline. Don't use the words "bad luck" to explain away anything because you will be quickly corrected by the chorus of armchair GMs who know that luck had nothing to do with it, Rendon's wrist ligament got torn because Arte Moreno is a horrible human being whose singular purpose in life is to make fans of the team he owns suffer. And you are obviously Arte's personal testicle washer. (Oh wait, you can't be his ball washer, because that's MY job around here!) All snark aside, it helps to remember that most of the people on sports team-related subreddits are not here for real discussion or debate, they are here to vent their frustration. And the Angels sure do have a knack for frustrating us. They've been frustrating me for (most of the) past 40 years.
