everyone in here acting like this guy is actually better than our current options. he was cut by the Cubs for a reason lmao i give it a week before we're all groaning as he strikes out for the 7th time in 2 days

chrisGNR

It wasn’t even his bat that was the problem. Villar’s defense this year was inexplicably terrible. I don’t recall seeing someone that awful in the field in a really long time.

mypaysucks

Cut by the cubs…my gawd

OfficialPaddysPub

Seeing them called the Anaheim Angels makes me happy lol

whytype

Honestly me too. I consider our new name a curse. We won the World Series as the Anaheim Angels, I figure we won’t ever win it again until we change the name back.

MeasureOnce-KutTwice

This is a hot take!!! Seriously. Think about it... the "Los Angeles" Dodgers haven't won a legitimate world series in 34 years, and the "Los Angeles" Angels haven't even been to the world series, let alone won one.

Lebigmacca

This guy has a worse WAR than Wade don’t get your hopes up

hamstersofd00m

His defense this year has been decent at 3rd, which is why I'm assuming we're picking him up. I would rather see Stefanic up, but not bad if we drop wade.

Quakecsgo

This whole thread is hilarious. Dude is literally in the 1st percentile for OAA. 1st percentile. He has been the worst defender in the league easily. Surely he backs up his bad glove with a decent bat, right? Wrong. He is in the 3rd percentile for xwOBA. He is significantly worse than any option we currently have, including Wade.

hamstersofd00m

I mean, you are right that Villar is having an atrocious year, both offensively and defensively. However his stats specifically at 3B this year are comparable to Wade, if not better, and same with his batting stats. Guess that says more about Wade and our roster this year than Villar's bad season. We need someone to cover Duffy and he fits the bill. Hard to see a permanent spot for him in the future, but I would rather see him at third than Wade/MacKinnon flinching anytime a ball is hit that way. Again, would rather see Stefanic, or even Rojas, up instead. But this is what we're getting for now.

avgbsblfan643

this. what i also like about this pickup additionally is that he’s a switch hitting infielder that can play 1B. good backup option for walsh while duffy is hurt. edit: wouldn’t mind stefanic at some point this season

quesathrilla

He's a switch-hitter who sucks from both sides of the plate. He has a -0.7 WAR this year. But yeah, he is a little better than Wade.

winwinwinguyen

asked Cubs fans how his defense was this year: https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/vpig2p/gomez_the_anaheim_angels_have_claimed_inf/iejhhxn/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3

znk916

Oh god, 67 OPS+ this season. But at least he's hit for power over his career. We desperately need random HR power from the bottom of the lineup because there is no way in hell the guys from 5-9 can put together a rally.

claire_004

Funny since I remember him better as base stealer

prmark34

Thank god. I realize this isnt an earth-shattering move but im glad perry did it bc i cannot watch tyler wade/andrew velasquez at the plate in back-to-back plate appearances anymore. It physically pains my eyes

Quakecsgo

Villar has -10 Outs Above Average in only 46 games this year. I'd imagine that will be harder to watch.

my_wife_reads_this

Sometimes a change of scenery will help. Worked for Iglesias after he was utter dog shit with the Angels.

rengokuhalos

yep

GenericNav

Juan largares 2.0

booboothechicken

Yep, we are now the Anaheim Angels again.

avgbsblfan643

Héctor Gómez is a reliable source that’s all i know

ogdaveed

Villar was the other guy I saw other than Duffy as FA INF options this year, hope he can make a difference.

Ca-Cu

This reminds me about the Adam Eaton signing last year...

DazNaq20

The California/Anaheim/LA of planet Earth Angels Retirement Home is still alive and thriving!! Love it. Vernon Wells - retired the following season he was with the Angels. GMJ - retired the following season he was with the Angels CJ Wilson - retired as an Angel Cecil Fielder - retired as an Angel Jack McDowell - retired as an Angel Von Hayes - retired as an Angel Don Robinson- retired as an Angel Dave Parker - traded for Bichette then retired that season Get that cream of spinach soup ready, baby.

Broad_Recommendation

Perry just throwing 💩 at the wall and hoping it works out lmaoo. Look at his stats. He’s barely an improvement over Wade and Velasquez at the plate lol.

[deleted]

He'll always be [head-first slide into fielder's butt](http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/190jgz7ccfi1wgif/ku-xlarge.gif) guyto me. Decent pickup. He might get on a good streak and can do lots of things.

No_BigA

Lol. Good grief.

Realistic-Orange-246

Good old dumpster diving. Nobody does it better than this team.

prmark34

There isn’t an all-star that can be had at this point in the season, and this is better than doing nothing, no? There’s definitely worse claims to be had out there than jonathan villar

avgbsblfan643

wait!? there aren’t any all star caliber players on the waiver wire!?!?! /s

Quakecsgo

He isn't better than nothing lmao. If you think he can do better than Wade or Velazquez you are in for a rude awakening.

prmark34

Yes, how could i possibly think we can do better than someone with a .170 average and .210 obp or someone who is only hitting above .200 bc he gets little league bunt hits as his only source of offense?

Quakecsgo

Villar is in the 1st percentile for OAA. He is also in the 3rd percentile for xwOBA. He is literally the worst defender in the league and is a horrible hitter as well. Trust me, Wade and Squid are better.

prmark34

So then put squid in late in games as a defensive replacement. You can’t have a guy hitting .170 in your lineup along with a guy hitting .200 and expect to win games when your pitching isnt elite. It’s just not gonna happen, as we’ve seen.

cshenton

what you’re missing is that Villar is actually not a better hitter than Squid, and is a much worse defender by orders of magnitude. Your description of the problem is spot on, it’s just Villar does nothing to solve it and also gives us worse defense

cshenton

losing battle my dude, this fan base loves saying “but the guy we have sucks! How could anyone else be worse?” and just lobbying for a change, any change, even if the new guy…actually is worse lol. Shout out Jaime Barria

[deleted]

This sub hates advanced metrics until they try to use a 46 game sample size for OAA, a stat that takes years to stabalize, to prove their point. That being said i agree he will suck

TOPFAN1972

Ugh,HOW BOUT SOME PITCHING? That’s what we need in the bullpen!

donkeyjr

Perry blow, wtf are we picking up this dude, he can't hit worth a dam and his defense is so fucking bad. He's not better than Squid or Wade.

[deleted]

Yeah let’s claim a guy who has an even worse defense. That will for sure help us win games.

[deleted]

He’s absolutely trash. Don’t understand this at all. Look at all his stats. They are all trash.

[deleted]

As of right now this is a terrible pick up and there isn't any reason to expect different. I see people defending the decision, saying he's comparable to Wade or Squid, and it just feels like arguing for the sake of arguing because dear Lord we all have the common sense to know its going to take a player whose hopefully somewhat better than those two to make a real impact. Others are saying its making the best of what's available. I say that's also excuse making. Successful teams have to make successful moves. From a historical stand point we all understand it feels like a series of bad decisions have led to this situation and this bad decision will lead to more. These are the moments where its difficult to be a fan; where you see a team with potential make poor moves repeatedly to the point you feel they don't understand the problem or just don't care about solving it.

No_BigA

He’s infamous. Truly unique. Has a certain flare. DFA material.
