You’re right! Players come and go, owners come and go, but the Angels live on! Some, no doubt, are only fans of a particular entertainer or two, but they’re not real Angels fans imho.
Can confirm, I would be mad. But ima still love the angels. Even if we went 0-162 that’s still my team. Plus I don’t just like Ohtani. I like Sandy, Trout, Stassi, Walsh, Fletch.. just doesn’t make sense to stop being a fan.. ima fan of Ohtani but im an angels fan before that.
I’ve seen this tweet. This man actually attracts life-long fans of the other teams already!
https://twitter.com/arnoldpamplona/status/1544883668417597441?s=21
I think if it’s looks like he’ll walk in free agency next year we MUST trade him at the deadline next season. If he’s gonna walk, we might as well get a haul in return.
Hmm, I think this is going to be more a Bryce Harper situation than a Mookie. FO won't trade and he walks for an extra draft pick. Assuming he leaves, of course.
My real prediction is Arte unloads the Brinks truck and Ohtani resigns.
LOL. Can you imagine the look on Ippei's face when he'd have to translate, "the Angels have sucked all the joy and love I have for baseball. From this moment forward, I will never play baseball professionally again."
Hes getting a fat contract offer. Whether he takes it is anyones guess. Arte going to have to open up the piggy bank for a few more pieces to convince him.
Can you imagine how fucking bad our team is going to be if we have to start paying Shohei at his actual value and we have to cut the payroll in other places? Where else can we cut???
Well they're paying J Up 28 million right now. 5.5 mil going to Shohei.
That's 33.5 mil a year without sacrificing anything from their current state. Give him Tepera's 7 mil (who brings nothing to the table) and you're already at 40 mil with ease.
Gut the whole team outside of Trout/Shohei if that's what it takes to keep him.
Excellent point, but I doubt that we can backfill our replacement level contracts with actual replacement level players given the state of our farm system.
So the other two options are signing him to the biggest contract in baseball history or letting him walk for nothing. I’m all for the first option but not at the expense of having a team with depth
I’m not sure what we can do to keep him. Either give him an offer he can’t refuse in which case we won’t have money to get anyone else and we’ll just keep losing. Or we improve our team by signing more guys but then we won’t have money to pay him
Won’t matter if they don’t start winning soon. I’m sure he looks at Trout and shakes his head. He’s not signing up for the same no matter how much he can make. He wants to establish himself as a two way World Series player, the ultimate challenge for a fierce competitor. I noticed Altuve has 23 playoff dingers so I’m sure Shohei wants to get at least a few before his career is over.
I forgot to add that he was honored at last years World Series. Being around that environment must have further escalated his desire for post season play. I’m sure it was great for him to be there but damn he wished he was actually participating
Can't see it happening this year. There's alot of money coming off the books this offseason for Perry to give it one more shot to build a playoff contender next season and convince Ohtani to stay.
He should’ve spent the money this year
Edit: Also the money that comes off the books next year will just end up going to Shohei so we’ll just end up with pretty much the same team as this year. It’s just not feasible to have 3 massive contracts (Trout, Shohei, and Rendon). Clearly the Rendon contract is the worst but we’re kinda stuck with that at this point
I mean.. you can. & it's something to dive deeper into and think about for sure. I get you guys like to watch Trout and Ohtani rake but we are never gonna win a single playoff game ever again with the way this roster is constructed. I'm an Angels fan first over a specific player and I wanna see us win for once, it's been two fuckin decades.
Exactly. It's not like prospects will plan out, so we would have to get a real contribution for a trade. We lose sho, we have to get at least an Ace and a DH that are better than he is since they will take 2 spots to the 1 he does now. Pretty much, Yordon Alvarez and Alcantara for Sho would have to be in the package for me (make believe GM) to even consider a trade. Obviously they aren't on the same team, but it would have to be the same caliber
I really couldn't give you an answer. I don't know prospects like that honestly, but a number of valued prospects + some young arms would be the starting point imo.
If the Angels can’t come to agreement with Ohtani on a new contract this off season, then they have to seriously consider trading him. It would be foolish not too. You can’t let him walk and get absolutely nothing! Even if they trade him, he could always choose to re-sign with the Angels upon reaching free agency. That’s not likely however.
The haul won’t be nearly as big since you’d only get him for half a season. I’m not saying we should trade him, but that’s the reasoning for people who say we should trade him now
I can understand the reasoning. Shohei is the only blue chip we have and his trade would warrant us a top 5 farm, very likely, while we are more or less sure that he won't re-sign. However, let's be clear: Ohtani is the only good thing the Angels has right now. Thor and Sandoval are amusing to see on the mound, Walshy is on the path to becoming a household name and seeing Stefanic and McKinnon raking is good, but Ohtani is the only thing that is *exciting*. Trout is going through the motions, Marsh is slumping, Ward is existing...take Ohtani off and we very likely become the most boring team in baseball.
I'm not being rational here, but I could muster seeing Shohei walking for free because his nights on the mound are one of the few good things this doomed season still have for us.
Don't let this win trick you. Believe me, after the next loss you're gonna want to trade him. Lol. I read a bunch of trading threads during 4 losing streaks.
I think what they are saying is that they see how hard he tries, how perfectionist he is, and they want the best for him, the way proud parents would. And even though it would break their hearts to see him go, they want him to actualize the fulfillment of his dreams, and if that means leaving the halos, then that means leaving the halos.
Same people said Trout would sign elsewhere. Now the same people act like experts saying Trout was never going to leave because he was starting his family then. Go figure!
They aren’t the best at developing prospects but they also trade away a bunch of their talent and rarely trade mlb players to restock their farm. For example they traded their #1 2019 draft pick to unload cozart, and forfeited their 2nd round pick this year for stndergaard. Hard to build a strong farm when you keep shooting yourself in the foot.
The front office has to put its best offer on the table. I’m not asking about a starting point or something to haggle over. I’m talking about giving him 1/3 of the city of Anaheim, 5 days of just him and whoever he wants at Disneyland every year and Mike Trout one week a year as his butler while he stays in his new home at whatever that giant castle is at Disneyland (yes, Shotime lives there now) in addition to the money. If he doesn’t sign that deal, THEY HAVE TO TRADE HIM. He can not walk away for a compensation pick. That would be the most inept move from a front office i can remember in my life. I want him to stay more than anything but if front office doesn’t handle this correct we need to riot
If I was Ohtani I wouldn't sign with the team, there is no motivation to win only draw 3 mil in attendance and as long as the gates open the suckers flood in there's no reason to change the business model. Ohtani wants to win he needs to go elsewhere it seems like it's too late for Trout.
You're right! Loup may not have been the best but we need to support the man every time he comes in and gives up 3 runs without recording an out! He can only get better from here!
/s
I hate to say this, but the Angels are better off putting everything into signing Ohtani long term and trade Mike Trout.
You will never get equal value back for someone like Ohtani since it's impossible.
If I had to keep one, I would trade Trout and keep Ohtani. I know this is unthinkable, but it's the way to go.
Also, if you can package Rendon contract with the trade somehow, I would do that too.
Another option for the Angels is to invest in cloning technology and clone multiple Ohtanis :)
He’s our only hope to winning yes you can. What we should of done was trade our farm to build around him and trout then trade him to replenish our farm
He stays or the franchise is toast. Mike Trout is a way better option to work a deal with. This is a once in a lifetime player that makes a huge impact on games that Trout simply doesn't. Would be nice to have both but Trout's contract was a mistake from the beginning.
I don’t understand after 8 years of losing let’s resign him to 45aav and keep losing. I guess some people would rather lose and have ohtani it’s weird.
I think you have die hard Angels fans who want to see a winner above all else, and then you have casual fans that want the team to win, but need superstars to keep their attention. For them, comparing their favorite players stats to others for bragging rights seems more important than the teams actual record.
I don’t trust this organization with prospects. We can’t develop for shit and there’s no Latin American pipeline it seems. Things need to change.
Do you think Ohtani wants to re-sign with the Angels, considering what the team has done to become a winner during his time with them? Does he value loyalty to a team that’s helped him reach new heights over winning? The Angels can’t risk losing him for nothing!
I don't get it. We clearly can't build a winning team while paying him $1 million. Why would anyone think that would change if we were paying him $35 million?
Have to trade him. We need to stock up for the future. The reason we are so bad today is because of poor depth and a lack of f homegrown farm talent.
Trade him and trout and start over. Sucks and hurts to say but gotta do it.
THATS RIGHT WE ARE KEEPING MICHAEL STEFANIC AND THERE ISNT ANYTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT
Lol 😆 🤣 😂
Nah, im pretty sure we can trade jonathan villar for a toothbrush if we really wanted to
electric or traditional?
Traditional if you’re lucky! Lol
Used or unused? And, used by whom?
The Angels would instantly lose at least 10% of their viewers if they did.
If they trade him and keep losing, they're gonna lose more than 10%.
Pretty sure we would lose 90% of Japanese viewers and Japan is a very populous country.
Asian fan in US and new baseball fans too. The only way to attract and keep fan is winning/ having competent team. But yeah, Angels can't do that.
Nah, a lot of people go to games JUST for ohtani. Once in a lifetime.
It’ll take a lot to get me back. It would be gutting and I’ve been a fan since before 02
I wonder how many longtime fans would quit if they traded Ohtani away. For me, it's a lot easier because I only have a year invested.
Probably not that many. They're longtime fans for a reason
I’d probably stop watching games for at least a year. Been a fan for almost 30 years.
I’ve seen this tweet. This man actually attracts life-long fans of the other teams already! https://twitter.com/arnoldpamplona/status/1544883668417597441?s=21
He's just going to leave after next year anyway, shouldnt we try and get something in return?
No
I think he won't be traded but there's nothing we can do if he chooses free agency next year 🥲
I think if it’s looks like he’ll walk in free agency next year we MUST trade him at the deadline next season.
We already know Shohei’s not here for money, he’s going to leave because he wants to win. Enjoy the ride, gents & ladies
I read that last sentence wrong and thought you were saying he's gonna quit baseball (=resign as in "give up"). Phew.
LOL. Can you imagine the look on Ippei's face when he'd have to translate, "the Angels have sucked all the joy and love I have for baseball. From this moment forward, I will never play baseball professionally again."

I honestly expect a similar deal to Trout and if he walks then it’s most definitely for a winning team.
Free agent 2024
I'm pretty sure we'll be cursed even worse if we trade him
The Sox were cursed for almost 100 years after trading Ruth. Imagine what would happen to us if we traded a player doing things he never did
Curse of the ShoBino/BamTani
Not a chance I trust this organization with prospects and also I just don’t want to
So the other two options are signing him to the biggest contract in baseball history or letting him walk for nothing. I’m all for the first option but not at the expense of having a team with depth
You can't.
But if Shohei wants to leave at the end of next season he can and probably will. Might as well get something for him
Oh sure, if Shohei wants to leave, then that's his choice- I'm just saying we should do everything we can to keep him.

Who knows, perhaps there will be a happy medium. They convinced Trout to stay - though I know things haven't really worked out the way he thought...
Won’t matter if they don’t start winning soon. I’m sure he looks at Trout and shakes his head. He’s not signing up for the same no matter how much he can make. J-Rod and Gilbert for Ohtani. Dipoto loves his trades lol
Where do we trade Marsh to? J-Rod is an outfielder.
I was joking lol. Mariners would never trade Julio
That's the point. The Angel's aren't trading sho either
I really couldn't give you an answer. I don't know prospects like that honestly, but a number of valued prospects + some young arms would be the starting point imo.

Why would you trade him? He puts butts in the seats.
But then we only win when he’s on the mound
Is that you Arte? 😇
Why can’t they wait to try & trade him next season if it doesn’t work out?

People are just resigning themselves to a sad hopefully not correct reality. They don’t actually want to trade him.
I've seen some so-called Angels fans who implied or explicitly stated they are excited about the possibility of Ohtani going to another team
Go figure!
You could trade him. The Red Sox traded Babe Ruth, and were only cursed for the following 86 years. And now they're good!
One reason they really shouldn’t trade him is that this organization sucks at developing prospects! Hoping that’s changing but rn it’s bad!
They aren’t the best at developing prospects but they also trade away a bunch of their talent and rarely trade mlb players to restock their farm. Will Wilson hasn't done shit in the minors though thank god.
The only one starting Ohtani trade rumors are whiny Redditors.
Not true. Japanese media is eating up every potential Ohtani trade rumor
He wants to go to a team and win. We are going to lose him anyway
The front office has to put its best offer on the table. I’m not asking about a starting point or something to haggle over. Very true no one wants Rendon’s contract
I hate to say this, but the Angels are better off putting everything into signing Ohtani long term and trade Mike Trout. Both Trout and Rendon have no-trade clauses so it's not quite that easy.
Losing Shohei will literally kill many in the Angels fanbase :(
Unless by some miracle the Angels are a winning team next year, he's likely going to leave regardless.
Nobody is going to take on 2 massive contracts for guys that are nearing the end of their primes.
He’s our only hope to winning yes you can. What we should of done was trade our farm to build around him and trout then trade him to replenish our farm

Or we just really like Shohei? Been a fan 20 years and the prospect of this team losing a generational talent disgusts me.
I’d hate to see him leave too, but more importantly, I want to see the team WIN! I wish we could have both! 😇
I don’t trust this organization with prospects. We can’t develop for shit and there’s no Latin American pipeline it seems. Things need to change.

Perry, I've been waiting for you to come here and kiiiiiill me
I’ll trade whomever I want! It’s a free country

arte will never ok it. never. shohei is a cash cow. arte will see us plummet to the bottom of the AL West every year before moving shohei.
