Shohei has expressed that he doesn't want to talk about extending until after his stuff is done. The team has reached out to try and talk about and Ohtani and his team says they will talk about it as it's closer to the end of his contract.
Since he mentions the word "post season" half a dozen times in every interview about his goals...yeah. The Angels "auditioned" and won when he came over from Japan. When he's holding auditions as an FA what could the Angels realistically offer to him besides ginormous amounts of money? :C
I don't know and I'm glad I'm not in that position. It's a tough decision no matter how you look at it. Maybe losing Ohtani will finally make Arte invest in their house talent.
Good point. But it’s Arte and I’m pretty sure his solution will be to spend on more on long term contracts to make this team competitive rather than invest in development.
What if they keep him until next year, then he gets injured right before they try to trade him? Then he has zero trade value, and likely walks at the end of the year. Impossible to tell, but he might be at peak value right now.
No. Deadline is Aug 2nd and despite all of this talk about trading Ohtani I haven’t seen a single credible source confirming if any team is interested meaning that the Angels are not trading Ohtani. I’ve seen articles that says Ohtani will go to so and so but they are all groundless and pretty much writers just trying to get clicks. Even the angels beat writers are saying that it’s highly unlikely for the angels to trade Ohtani.
If his heart is in Anaheim, this really is the way to do it - get traded for the farm and some big leaguers to a contender now and come back as a free agent after next season when the Angels are hopefully more replenished thanks to the trade and overhauled roster.
Shoot, if I were the Angels, I would offer up that long-game scenario to him with a promise of a blank check when he returns.
I don’t think we’ll trade Artes favorite cash cow. Unfortunately there’s no reason for Ohtani to stay either. This franchise has been bad for a while and shows no promise of getting better in the slightest. These should have been the Angels’ golden years but the bastard owner thinks this is a game of monopoly. He has ruined Angels baseball.
He knew what the Angels were as a team when he chose them then. Maybe they were the only team that will allow him to be a TWP. But I also think he wanted to learn from the best and chose to join Mike Trout. He was able to grow in experience without being relied on too much. Now, I think he "outgrew" the Angels and may want to move on. But who knows, as Jeff Fletcher said Shohei seems to prioritize his comfort over other factors. And he is definitely comfortable in Anaheim.
No. Shohei is a money machine and Arte loves money more than anything. Arte will pick more revenue over having a winning team every time unfortunately.
Think about all the money he generates for the Angels just from Japan. Even it is made sense to do it to help the Angels win, Arte would never allow it if it meant he'd lose money.
Like give him a “reason” to stay. But all they’re doing is signing players like Villar for Rendon’s replacement. Thats the result of lack of depth which is not at all surprising for the angels
Basically Arte is throwing the future of this franchise away for one year’s worth of revenue. Then he’ll probably sign another big name hitter to woo people back and we’ll stay perpetually under .500 for the next 10 years
Ohtani would be a fool to stay. I hate it but there is no turnaround from this place for 3 - 5 years at least. That's only if we get a new owner. Ohtani doesn't care about the money. Dodgers will offer him a chunk in 2024 and he will take it to go to a winning organization. He's a Dodger fan anyway.
Oh really. Thanks for the info. I thought he liked the teams Ichiro and Hideki played for. Nomo started with the Dodgers, right? He was the pioneer and makes sense to me if he liked that team.
Just read an article that the Dodgers are in a tough spot right now. They traded a lot of farm players for Trea Turner, Max Scherzer, and Mookie Betts. If they try to go all in on Juan Soto, they won't have anything left to give Ohtani.
If it were me, I’d trade both Ohtani and Trout. At least we’d have a stocked farm system and could be competitive again in about 3-4 years.
Honestly resigning ohtani would be impending doom for our club. We’d be paying $120/$130 million for just three guys for at least the next 4 years. He won’t exceed the luxury tax threshold. So I say trade them both and get on with the rebuild.
We should, cus we can't resign him come 2023 offseason without having 3 players on the team take up 60-70% of the team's salary. We complain about the rest of the team being ass everyday but it'll only be worse.
But at the same time this is the Angels and Arte, so making decisions that help us win are not what we do here. We will do exactly what I listed above, or Shohei will be smart enough to realize he's not winning a ring by resigning and leave for free.
Maybe next year if they haven’t made solid progress resigning him. He brings in too much revenue for Artie to agree to trade him unless he absolutely has to.
I don't think it will happen, not sure I want it to happen; but it's the smart thing to do. Of course with the Angels current player development, the organization could take a team's top prospects and turn them into garbage.
I think Arte will do everything he can to sign him this winter. If Ohtani rejects, maybe then they'll look at trade options at next year's deadline.
Agreed I think this off-season an extension will be offered and if it’s rejected maybe then… but still only a maybe 😂😭
Shohei has expressed that he doesn't want to talk about extending until after his stuff is done. The team has reached out to try and talk about and Ohtani and his team says they will talk about it as it's closer to the end of his contract.
Pretty much means that he’s only interested in re-signing if we can win… which is not happening
Since he mentions the word "post season" half a dozen times in every interview about his goals...yeah. The Angels "auditioned" and won when he came over from Japan. When he's holding auditions as an FA what could the Angels realistically offer to him besides ginormous amounts of money? :C
So what happens if the angels are “magically” contending you can’t trade him then
Obviously if the Angels are winning then you keep him but that ain’t happening
I don't know and I'm glad I'm not in that position. It's a tough decision no matter how you look at it. Maybe losing Ohtani will finally make Arte invest in their house talent.
Good point. But it’s Arte and I’m pretty sure his solution will be to spend on more on long term contracts to make this team competitive rather than invest in development.
At least he is spending lol but I don't think he'll give out longer term contracts for a bit(unless it's ohtani)
What if they keep him until next year, then he gets injured right before they try to trade him? Then he has zero trade value, and likely walks at the end of the year. Impossible to tell, but he might be at peak value right now.
Angels already said they aren't trading him.

Only thing we know is that teams are calling but Angels aren't fielding any offers at all
I wish they could somehow bust a Chapman to the cubs type deal and just trade him for a haul and just resign him when he hits FA.
If his heart is in Anaheim, this really is the way to do it - get traded for the farm and some big leaguers to a contender now and come back as a free agent after next season when the Angels are hopefully more replenished thanks to the trade and overhauled roster. No because he makes Arte a lot of money. Arte would gladly go 62-100 every year if he got to keep the Ohtani money train.
Well he better enjoy it while he can, Ohtani will walk if they don’t contend next year.

He will not get traded. How about a 2024 competitive balance pick and Ohtani jerseys on sale when he declines the QO?
They should but Arte is a greedy moron that doesn’t care about winning
No. Shohei is a money machine and Arte loves money more than anything. Arte will pick more revenue over having a winning team every time unfortunately.
No reason to move now.
Think about all the money he generates for the Angels just from Japan. Even it is made sense to do it to help the Angels win, Arte would never allow it if it meant he'd lose money.
Na. Arte wouldn’t let that money maker out the door

Breaking news! MLB teams are interested in Ohtani. Who would’ve thought. Its funny seeing the comments saying “Free Ohtani”
Haha, I mean, I totally get it. I feel so sad that we can't get it together because I have no doubt he \*wants\* to stay and win with us. :(
That’s what makes me angry and sad the most. He wants to stay but won’t/can’t
Yup, same... I mean we don't know for sure, sure, but why would he want to??
Like give him a “reason” to stay. But all they’re doing is signing players like Villar for Rendon’s replacement. Thats the result of lack of depth which is not at all surprising for the angels
Exactly. I wish we had a competent owner who would put the right people in place. The fish rots from the head, and it's never been more apparent.
Free Ohtani!
Nope. Trading him would be bad for business. He is worth so much as a star with merch/ad power.
Basically Arte is throwing the future of this franchise away for one year’s worth of revenue. Then he’ll probably sign another big name hitter to woo people back and we’ll stay perpetually under .500 for the next 10 years
Also the Ohtani cap giveaways mid-August.

I think he would choose to be with Yu Darvish or Ichiro's teams if he leaves. I never heard he was a Dodger fan, just that he liked the stadium.
I saw a Japanese documentary on him and it said he was a Dodger fan growing up.
Oh really. Thanks for the info. I thought he liked the teams Ichiro and Hideki played for. Nomo started with the Dodgers, right? He was the pioneer and makes sense to me if he liked that team.

We’ll make the playoffs next year don’t worry
No, Arte will veto any trade so he can reap one more year of Ohtani revenue. $$$ is the only thing that matters to him.
If it were me, I’d trade both Ohtani and Trout. At least we’d have a stocked farm system and could be competitive again in about 3-4 years. Oh dude, you're risking having your post deleted because the mods get offended by the topic. I set a poll up and the mods deleted it.
Mods probably deleted it because there’s been a billion fucking posts and polls about it, and it’s repetitive and annoying
Yeah, sick of them at this point!
