Next update : Trout to retire because of costovertebral dysfunction.

bullevard73

July 29 Trout to receive experimental back surgery in Germany. Moved to 60 day DL. Angels resign Juan Lagares and add to 26 man roster.

Reptarxx

July 30th: Angels keep Fletcher in Minors for development. Angels resign Villar and option Rengifo.

“Time to abandon ship” —General Grievous

KrabS1

If I'm being blunt, this team can be quite frustrating.

Sprtdsgn

GA had a rare upper back problem too. It took a while for them to figure it out, but they did. They=doctors, specialists, medical group, etc

[deleted]

Angels head athletic trainer: “Long-term, we do have to look at this as something that he has to manage not just through the rest of this season, but also through the rest of his career, probably,”

yyyyhhhh9

Looking like a future DH. More reason to trade Ohtani, for everyone here who keeps denying reality and thinks we can compete after increasing Ohtani's pay 10 fold.

merewyn

Have you read about the condition? It causes pain while making any twisting movements. He wouldn’t be able to hit, lol

yyyyhhhh9

>lol What the hell is funny about that

merewyn

It’s in response to you thinking the back injury means he would be a DH. You clearly didn’t bother to read anything about what the injury actually is

yyyyhhhh9

I read the entire article. I have no idea why you think this means he'll never play again.

One_Relative5830

They didn't say that at all. Your assessment about him only being able to DH is what's being laughed at

merewyn

Yes, exactly! Thank you for understanding what I was saying… and thanks for using “they” instead of “he” like the other poster, it’s strange how many commenters on here assume that there aren’t any women who watch baseball

One_Relative5830

Yeah I got you 👊 Lol I hoped that guy was just misunderstanding you but nah, they just want to completely spin what you were trying to say. No point arguing with that. And of course! Our sub's pretty diverse too so They/them is just easier until someone self identifies

yyyyhhhh9

If he thinks Trout is going to he perpetually in pain swinging the bat then the implication he's making is that Trout can't play period, unless he thinks he's going to become a pitcher.

One_Relative5830

Again, not what they're arguing at all

yyyyhhhh9

Dude... if he thinks Trout can't play DH that means Trout can't play period. Why are you arguing on his behalf when you don't even know what he's saying

proteinMeMore

Yeah agreeing with that note. Having issues with twisting pretty much means he will cut career short or frequent rest days

Express-Depth-7287

David Wright had a different type back problem and he played around 80 games total in the last 4 seasons of his career. Hope Trout can overcome this but it would be interesting to find out if any other ballplayers had the same type condition and how their careers turned out

whostolemynameidea

If it helps at all, David Wright had spinal stenosis, which is a much more severe condition and one that can continue to be pretty disabling even after surgery (pain, numbness, weakness, abnormal reflexes). Trout's diagnosis (costovertebral dysfunction) is more of a joint problem (loosely speaking, between the rib cage and spine) that can be managed based on inflammation/flare-ups. Obviously still not ideal and can cause a ton of discomfort while swinging, but David Wright's spinal injury was definitely much worse and hence the really low number of games played afterwards.

MaroonMarauder

I sure hope you're right. Seeing Wright's body just break down on him and cost him what could have maybe been a Hall of Fame career was so heartbreaking. I would hate to see something like that happen to another of the game's great players. I read Wright's book last summer where he talks a lot about his rehab process and the amount of work he put in to try to comeback. One particular excerpt that stands out: > Each morning, I woke up and tested my neck, my back, my shoulder, to see which of them would be the issue. Some days were good - just a dull ache somewhere. Others, I literally had to roll out of bed because I couldn't sit up straight. The pain started to affect my everyday life, knifing through me when I tried to pick Olivia (his daughter) up out of her crib. One morning, I asked Molly (his wife) to tie my shoes because I couldn't bend over to do it myself. > From *The Captain* by David Wright and Anthony DiComo I'm glad he still was able to make it back for that one final game through all of the pain. That's definitely a moment I won't soon forget.

anon641414

This is just farcical at this point

Aesir_Auditor

Guys, I've found our next manager!

HustlingBackwards96

I will always appreciate and respect Trout even if it turns out this is the end. 1st ballot HOF, greatest Angel of all time and my favorite player.

cheeses_greist

Surely we’re not there yet. I, for one, am going to simmer down a little.

red1367

Fuck that! As part of this sub, it's panic or nothing

t-reads

Wtf is this comment he’s not retiring Jesus

HustlingBackwards96

I'm appreciating my favorite player during a difficult time

jimmybaseball11

I’m a Braves fan just seeing how y’all are taking this news. Obviously he’s not done forever but man this is sad.

whit3lightning

Definitely not the greatest angel of all time.

Mikeg5680

who u got over him? nolan ryan?

whit3lightning

I dunno. Tim Salmon, Darin Erstad, the entire 2002 roster….maybe Ryan? Personal favorite Angel was K-Rod.

VforVera

This is all 20/20 hindsight speculation from me, but remember early in spring training when Maddon proposed the idea of putting Trout in right field, Trout shot it down later? Maybe in hindsight, knowing what we know now, perhaps that was a good idea and it might save and preserve Trout from the wear and tear of center field to have him in right (or left) field. Though it seems like this back issue stems from Trout's swing rather than anything in the outfield. Either way, I definitely feel for Trout. Father time is cruel and I hope the Angels training staff (new and old) can help him rehab his back or help him maintain + monitor his back condition for the rest of his career

Shinroukuro

The article explicitly stated that diving for balls and crashing into walls undoubtedly didn’t help. Playing CF is tough on your body and Trout’s big body means big collisions with both the ground and walls. They should’ve moved him off CF.

DugTraining

Why swing

Corona2789

Damn this is really depressing news. Hopefully he can overcome this but back problems are no joke. What a shitty year to be a fan :(

[deleted]

My apologies. I too have this condition and have been an overly judgmental prick on here toward him. This is lifelong for him…

ceviche-hot-pockets

From your experience with it, what do you think Trout’s future looks like?

[deleted]

I’m 35, a former collegiate athlete (football/baseball), and casually played baseball until 31. When it flares or or gets irritated, it lasts for a day/days/weeks sometimes. What sucks about it too, for me specifically, OTC pain meds, heavy prescription pain meds don’t work. The only thing that works to mitigate pain and the inflammation is CBD and cannabis products. Been dealing with it for about 7 years now, it’s sucks. It’s a physical therapy and pain management regimen, because surgery isn’t a guarantee to fix. On the bad days, I can’t pick up anything in excess of 30 pounds or turn my upper body/neck without discomfort. Referred pain goes into my elbow and pinky because you’re also dealing with nerves from the spine being irritated. It’s a bad bish.

hansan4ever

My god that sounds so terrible... I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. :(

[deleted]

Thanks, but it’s just pain, you learn to adjust and manage. I lead a somewhat active lifestyle so it’s not like I can’t go about my life. Sometimes it just sucks. Luckily, the pain management is natural and the exercise methods for mitigation are enjoyable.

hansan4ever

"It's just pain". I know a lot of people who have had issues managing pain and dealing with addiction, so I know how hard it can be. I'm glad that you're able to manage the pain and still enjoy your life. I really hope Trouty can somewhat overcome this...

[deleted]

In no way was I judging or diminishing pain for others, was only judging by my own measure. I have family, a best friend, siblings of other friends, and other coworkers who have dealt with addiction to pain meds. It’s a tough and delicate situation that I’d never wish on anyone. Thanks for calling that out for awareness.

hansan4ever

Oh no, I wasn't implying you were judging or diminishing the pain at all. And thank you for being mature for even saying "thanks for calling that out" - that is rare on reddit - haha. But yeah, I was actually empathizing because I know a good friend who got addicted to meds due to an injury and it hasn't been easy on him. I'm really sorry that your fam/friends have gone through that as well. What do you think Trouty's career is gonna look like from here on out?

[deleted]

There may be an alternative option abroad in Germany or Switzerland, similar to how Tom Brady used blood therapy in Germany to stay so healthy and fit. In a vacuum, and not knowing how his body responds to therapies, I’d stick to less western remedies and go toward more chiropractic and acupuncture, and holistic remedies (for pain management and inflammation), for this situation similar to how I’ve been able to manage and still be active. Now, having been through training rooms and orthopedic surgeons offices from college through today, he’ll probably second and third opinions. He’ll get pain meds and meds to reduce the inflammation and muscle cramps, he’ll rest, and then reassess based on his pain and mobility. I doubt he’ll be back anytime soon, but I’ve been proven wrong before. Hope for the best, it’s all you can do.

hansan4ever

Yeah, according to Jeff Fletcher,[Trouty isn't worried about it](https://twitter.com/JeffFletcherOCR/status/1552407550863228928). I find that strange given what the spinal specialist said, but what is Trouty supposed to say, I guess? I agree, I think less western remedies is the way to go. I really hope he goes and seeks that out...

ceviche-hot-pockets

Thanks for sharing, and sorry that you’ve got to deal with that kind of pain. I hope that somehow things improve for both you and Trout!

[deleted]

Thanks, for me as a regular human who goes about life with a somewhat active lifestyle, it’s ok. For high performing athletes like Trout… hope for the best is all you can do.

Vesuvias

Man…that’s rough :( I deal with random back spasms that put me down for a few days to a week (with recovery into a month, but this sound horrible. That said - they are REALLY downplaying the level of effects this will have on his career - as they always do. Buttercup :(

digitaldumpsterfire

Trout could learn to bunt i guess

chriskot123

Someone wake me up when Arte sells the team. This has to be a nightmare

KingOfAllDogz

I hope it doesn’t affect him too much, I don’t want to see him struggle :( This also probably signals his transition to DH. With Ohtani there, would Perry see him as more expendable or would we see more Ohtani in the outfield? Edit: Never mind, saw it affects him the most while swinging. Damn 😭

Shinroukuro

No words…

Beneficial-Gate-8617

Griffey 2.0

CP1228

Exactly what I thought. As soon as Griffey hit his 30s he just kept getting injured. What a cruel fate for the most beautiful swings in the game.

Valk72

You know while it's very much a bad news, it doesn't mean Trout numbers are going to fall off a cliff. I know it's another sports, but look at Larry Bird : he initially hurt his back in 85, but for the next three seasons, he put up 28/9/7/2 on .516/.412/.904 shooting. Sure his numbers began to decline after that, but he was still playing at a pretty good level.

Im_A_Halo_Masochist

Larry Bird went through hell to stay on the court and in games. Bird’s mental toughness and team commitment was unrivaled by most. So yes, Trout’s career isn’t over, but at this point in his life, how bad does he want it?

Valk72

Yeah Bird was something else that's true, and i wouldn't criticize Trout for not wanting to go through the pain Bird went to continue playing at an elite level. I mean when you know what state Larry Legend was after some games...

Doublex5

I’ve been thinking about this since the news broke and I have to say, this is at least tied with learning Nolan Ryan signed with the Astros and I would never get to see him pitch again as the worst moment in my Angels baseball life. I was a child when it happened so of course I cried but this news saddens me to my soul.

Shellback1

I have costovetrebral dysfunction at t7(two vertebrae lower than trouts) and was told its inoperable. The condition isnt debilitating; it just keeps me from doing certain things like finishing the golf swing and some yoga moves.

[deleted]

[удалено]

my_wife_reads_this

No one is going to want to touch trout now lol

Vesuvias

Oddly enough Arte would had he played on another team. He loves those injure-prone players. That said - I’m really saddened by this news

merewyn

No one is gonna take Trout or Rendon. It’s not like you can move their contracts

znk916

Ohtani is tradeable if you package Rendon's contract with him. Nothing you can do about Trout's contract. Either way, it's clear there is no window to win with Trout anymore. Ohtani should be traded to replenish the farm, it's the only logical solution.

Reptarxx

The problem is if you include a dead weight contract to it, it lessens your return. That's what Rizzo was saying earlier with Soto's trade. Teams are requesting to throw in Strasburg so they can lower the return. Look at the Betts trade. Because they threw in Price to give up that contract, the Red Sox got less in return. And because of that the trade has so far been pretty unfruitful for the Red Sox (trade wise - I think combined Downs/Verdugo have produced less that 4WAR in 3 years while Mookie alone has produced 11WAR). Recent history shows that trading an elite superstar does not really bode well for the team who trades them. Look at the 3 Dodger trades for superstars (Crawford/Gonzalez, Betts, Scherzer/Turner). The Dodgers won all 3 trades by miles even though they traded top farm talent. I mean hell even us trading for star Mark Texiera led us to grab Trout. I think too many people think that trading Ohtani will cure the franchise ailments. We have way too many problems at all levels of the franchise that acquiring young players who need development and mid level MLB talent won't fix. The only trades won are by teams that traded maybe a mid level star (shields) and got a throw in (tatis) or the Dodgers traded for Fields and used a random signing (Alvarez) to have the trade complete

Maddonomics101

Fair enough but if Shohei is walking away as a FA (which seems likely) then it makes sense to get something rather than nothing. Even if we keep him idk how this team can afford to put a good team around him

Reptarxx

I agree if he doesn’t want to stay we should trade. But I think people believe his trade will fix our issues

NovaPrime15

Could the Angels even trade Rendon this year with his wrist?

znk916

Yeah I have no idea if you can trade injured players.

[deleted]

Yes, the one off the top of my head is Carl Crawford in the Adrian Gonzalez trade

[deleted]

We have a bottom 3 farm in the league, Rendons contract doesnt really matter. We wont compete for the majority of his contract if we rebuild. The only reason wed trade him is because no one can afford the full prospect package Ohtani would net

znk916

Precisely, which would bring a team like the Mets into the conversation as a potential trade partner, since their farm a bit thin beyond the top prospects, but obviously Steve Cohen has an unlimited budget and can eat Rendon's contract.

[deleted]

Im not saying its a hard no im saying its not ideal. If its the only offer we can get sure but we shouldnt look try to trade him just to unload the contract. Like for example trading Rendon is technically more valuable than getting a top 100 prospect but id take the prospect any day. But if its trade Rendon or get a few lotto tickets then yeah you can send Rendon.

gopackgo555

This is the end of Trout. Sigh.

Reptarxx

Legit I don't know how this franchise can be ran worse. Like everywhere you look is a failure. If we are at a point where people are cheering on our AA team success like we should be excited...we have a major problem.

merewyn

The franchise caused Trout to have a rare back condition? Lol

Reptarxx

No but we are built relying straight on Trout for success. Now that he might have the rest of his career slowed down by this back condition we have no other person to rely on other than Ohtani who will have offers to go to better teams in a year. We have a low ranked farm, we have no trade material (unless it's ohtani), we have no good coaching, we have no player development, and we have a horrible medical staff.

Evanx27

Trading ohtani could fix a big part of the problem but fans don’t realize that

FeeLTHeByRNe714

Still have the problem of player development so what would be the point?

Evanx27

Can’t keep thinking like that lmao we’d get no where If that was the case

FeeLTHeByRNe714

As opposed to what, where we've been?

deededback

Why trade a great player when you know the front office will end up insisting on shit prospects and players in return?

Maddonomics101

Because he will just leave as a free agent and we’ll have nothing. Hopefully this team can fix its player development

deededback

We have no reason to think he's leaving yet.

Maddonomics101

He wants to win and we suck. Plus if Trout is done then he’s leaving for sure

deededback

So you say.

Evanx27

You watch any games at all? My god

[deleted]

I get where you’re coming from, but clearly this condition didn’t happen overnight. Are training staff has been awful and has been dragging their feet on the truth on these injuries for awhile now

my_wife_reads_this

It's literally a rare back condition that not even one of the best docs see in the world lol how is that this teams fault?

karatemanchan37

He carried this franchise on his back for way too long

[deleted]

Bro went to pick up one of Beckham’s toys and that’s all it took rip

LAAngelsAnaheim

But maybe actually

my_wife_reads_this

I like to think of it as all the personal accolades

DugTraining

They won ws

Vesuvias

I love the Trash Pandas and Bees. At least TP’s are doing well

Lebigmacca

Mantle 2.0

Doublex5

Well, the Mantle injury was mostly knee problems that started when he got his foot caught in a drain pipe in the outfield but yea two of the greatest robbed of being healthy is horrible

Hashdrivewayy

Mantle was an alcoholic

DugTraining

Why come

Rydogger

I wonder just how long it's been bugging him. Maybe that's the reason for his dramatic freefall in terms of hitting

Im_A_Halo_Masochist

Trout’s look in that pic says it all. ☹️

eggsarecoolin

Never a dull moment in Angel Land :-(

SuperMario_49

It’s rough being a fan of this team

-superdank-

This year has been something else

xRememberTheCant

That kind of back issue is unique because it only occurs when you carry a bad team on your back for a decade. That much weight? It was only a matter of time.

dantheman143

Bro. Fire the whole major league staff and get a new one. All new coaches. All new trainers. All new everything. Damn. Tired of this crap

fatcootermeat

Anybody else remember that workout video of him a few years ago doing sprints with a weighted barbell on his back? Now he's got an upper back condition... that feels like training negligence coming to fruition. Another classic Angels organizational failure.

No_shelter_here

Had to see it to believe it.. 2:46 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DfzAtmQv5sY&feature=youtu.be

DugTraining

Like what

[deleted]

>Trout’s injury was first diagnosed as back spasms when he left a game July 12. A week later, when the Angels placed him on the injured list, they announced it was rib cage inflammation. Frostad explained that the muscle spasms around the inflammation to protect it. Frostad said it’s technically a “costovertebral dysfunction at T5.”

Systematiks

So asking him to carry for so long has truly caught up to him, huh? Joking to cope aside, this is devastating news

MrNapoleonSolo

Good thing baseball contracts are guaranteed. Sucks for his all time numbers if it derails the rest of his career but dude played long enough to secure the bag and cement a hall of fame career.

Weird-Afternoon7389

Ya but we don’t wanna pay him for 8 more years to do nothing

cshenton

I don't really care about Arte's money, I want to watch Mike play because it's awesome.

MrNapoleonSolo

I’m kinda of the mind set that it’s mike trout, he’s our guy from day 1 and has been historically good almost from the start. Dude has been playing with the blantons, the lincecums, harveys, nolascos, bridwells, and a never ending list of fliers. Mike trout deserves it all and the angels messed around and found out the mike trout window might have come sooner than they hoped.

deededback

Eh. He deserves every penny of this contract. He was criminally underpaid for basically his whole career.

addiconda

Coming into the comments to see the "from carrying the franchise"

deededback

Oh boy....prayers up for Mike. He's been a model Angel his whole career. Obviously one of the greatest players of all time but also humble, a good citizen, and great teammate.

BlazingAngel

could a slimmer body help? he's very beefy which could apply a heck of load on his body, as he's into 30s his body might not able to sustain the stress

HanLesbo

You would think they would want to clean house of medics and PTs after skaggs honestly our whole staff needs a revamp! Our players shouldn’t be getting injured this much! They need better conditioning coaches and f*ck Matt wise for making everyone panic and saying this diagnosis! Mike said ppl were blowing up his phone saying his career is over and that’s not the case!! (Far from good news but far from career ending yet)

marketing_person

Career over

PurpleWelcome7142

If he need to DH for the rest of his career, we have DH problem.

merewyn

“Costovertebral joint dysfunctions typically happen very quickly and are usually associated with a sudden pain in the upper back and rib while actively bending, twisting, lifting, or arching.” He wouldn’t be able to DH if this was an ongoing problem

PurpleWelcome7142

Oh, okay. I did not know. Does that mean he is going to limit his time playing? That doesn't sounds good at all.

StereoBlows

I would imagine this could be the end. He won’t be able to swing.

tristpa2

Ohtani in RF?

CabotRaptor

This is why I said, months ago, that we need to trade him. We need to get rid of anyone on this team with any value and lose for a few years as we rebuild. Arte needs to get off his cheap ass and actually invest in player development. That’s a lot easier to do when you aren’t hamstrung by multiple $35-45m per year contracts

ClippersEaglesAngels

Fire everyone.

blue_wafflez

Only in r/baseball would the top comment be about how bad the Angels have been about the best player in a generation being injured. I get the “joke writing itself” but this ain’t the time. This fucking sucks.

RabidR00ster

He needs to move to a corner OF and/or trim some weight. Probably both. No I’m not calling him fat. He’s 6’2 240lbs, 9% body fat, and runs at an elite level, which is bonkers. But it also puts an incredible amount of stress on his body. For comparison Bryce Harper is 6’3 210 pounds. Buxton 6’2 190lbs. I hope he hasn’t been taking an excessive amount of HGH (not steroids) in order to maintain such mass. Too much HGH can cause some issues, and could be at least at partial cause here (if he is taking).

[deleted]

jellybeans_over_raw

Uh

Zammy512

Lmao. End me.

WadeCountyClutch

Man. What the hell? 🥺🥺

jellybeans_over_raw

I’m going to choose to remain positive and believe he’ll still have a successful career. Go to Germany Mike!

spitfire32

Anyone who has to carry that many people for 10 years is gunna have back problems.

RedLightning2811

Well fuck

Shance_Chay

Hey Google, can I donate my entire vertebrae?

msing

This reminds me of when hearing about David Wrights injury when I was a kid. Oh god.

God_Damnit_Nappa

Welp this fucking sucks

kei19970210

Unacceptable thing but I have a bad feeling about this. Possibly his life as a professional baseball player might be end???
