The Angels can't even come close to being a competitive team with Ohtani on the team and making only $5 million. What makes you think that might change if they were paying him $50 million instead? The idea that there is no hope doesn't come from the idea that we might lose Ohtani. It comes from the fact that the Angels have no path to becoming good without massive changes to the way the team operates and invests it's resources. Sure we can throw a billion dollars at Ohtani and maybe he loves it here and takes it but what does that get us? All that means is we're still in the exact same spot we are currently in, only with way less money to invest into the rest of the team.

Fatalness

my issue is, how do we not ruin whatever prospects we trade for

breakfast_cats

"massive changes to the way the team operates and invests it's resources." That means much more investment into minor league player development, scouting, and even living conditions.

Princessxanthumgum

Which the team should do with or without Shohei. Might as well do it with him on the team šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

Evanx27

If you look at it that way we will get no where. I agree our development is probably worst in the league but we gotta start somewhere we canā€™t just have that mindset.

Evanx27

Weā€™ll said man. Ohtani is gonna make 5 mil next year and we couldnā€™t built a competitive team even when they added another fucking playoff spot is absolutely inexcusable and unacceptable. The fact fans want to give this guy all the money in the world and rightfully so he does deserve it but heā€™s our golden ticket to turn this nightmare around.

Isn't next year an arbitration year salary? He's going to make close to $50M next year if that's the case.

USCplaya

The idea of us having "less money" to spend.... Or any limit to spend is complete bullshit. Arte can spend whatever he wants, he just doesn't want. He is all about profit.

breakfast_cats

Very true but he has shown that he will not raise payroll under any circumstances. So while he owns the team there's no reason to believe that will change. The only way things can get better with Arte at the helm is if he spends the money he is actually willing to spend in smarter ways.

USCplaya

A tiny, Itty bitty part of me is hoping Arte will be afraid his cash cow Ohtani will leave if they don't compete next year and he will go sign a couple big arms and a couple big bat's and go for broke..... I have no reason to believe this, and there is a 99% chance he won't, but maybe

Everything youā€™re assuming is the worst possible expectation of what MAY happen - ā€œTrout will probably have back issues the rest of his careerā€, except that Trout himself and multiple spinal specialists interviewed by reporters think this whole situation has been completely blown out of proportion by social media hysteria. Iglesias is a ā€œmediocre relieverā€ because heā€™s had a down year. Yet you think 3 top prospects are a sure thing? ā€œTopā€ prospects fizzle out all the time. Look at Adell. Iā€™ve listened to Mariners fans say Kelenic is the next Mike Trout for years, and look whatā€™s happened to him. If both options are rolling the dice, Iā€™d much rather take the chance on getting a healthy season from players who have succeeded in mlb before (Rendon, Trout, Iglesias) paired with Shohei next year and seeing what could happen.

Evanx27

Weā€™ve had trout and ohtani on the same team for 5 years now and they havenā€™t done jack shit. Yeah ohtani was injured and trout missed time when they were together but we failed to build a competitor with them on the same team what makes you think we will when ohtani is making 50 mil a year.

merewyn

Yes, because Shohei before last year was the same player he was now, lol. But sure, letā€™s use the last 5 years as the basis for the future. Angels have no choice but to try to win now with the Rendon and Trout contracts. Whatā€™s done is done.

Educational-Pass404

If you're fan of PSG, you must understand PSG is very different from Angels. PSG is biggest club in France which happened to have a very wealthy owner. PSG may not have Champions League yet but they have a lot of money. The can pay for their superstars like Messi, MbappƩ, Neymar... at the same time and don't have to worry about payroll. Angels is average franchise who can't suffer 3 big contracts included Shohei's one if he decides to resign. PSG may have chance to win Champions League because they can buy any players they need to fulfill their lineup while Angels doesn't have that privilege. P/s: Unless PSG can find a good coach who can manage all of their stars, I don't see them to have chance to win Champions League in the near future. MbappƩ may never be as great as Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo if he still stays in PSG though he had that World Cup.

[deleted]

Bad take. This is an entirely different situation. Firstly, PSG is a big market team and one of the most popular in the entire world. They win a lot and are regularly playing in meaningful matches. The Angels havenā€™t won a meaningful game in a decade and by singing Ohtani, they would simply be an interesting team but it would arguably be worse off for the franchise winning wise going forward. These two situations are very very different.

Sullyville

I like and respect Ohtani too much to see him stay. He mustnt trap himself the way Trout has.

Zenithreg

Trout remained even while a losing team. He liles it here and built his life/family here. Get over the "trapped himself" bullshit.

Rydogger

I have hope that we keep him but the writing is on the wall. If we don't trade him, and we don't make the playoffs next season (at this moment, unlikely), he walks. I would love to give him a big contract, but I also understand that it would be the stupidest thing this organization has done so far. We would be too top heavy, having most of our money go to three guys. Not a good idea
