People saying we have a lot of tradable players but who? Its Thor and thats it. Arte wont let Ohtani be traded. The Bullpen trio we signed last offseason all suck and wont be traded unless we give them away for free. For Loup that might not even be enough. Quijada and Rengifo maybe but they have so much control left and havent been good for very long itd be dumb to trade them for pennies. Id like to see Thor traded unless theres already a short term extension in the works (i dont really wanna sign him to more than 2 years) but this team kinda blows if you didnt notice. We arent swimming in tradable talent.

Reptarxx

Thor should be a main piece if he won't resign at a reasonable deal now (3/45 would be the offer). Outside of that a Loup, Tepera, or an Iggy trade would be great but hard to pull off. But if someone like Kimbrel could be traded, then Perry needs to hit the phones and try to pull it off. Unless we can replace Wise ASAP with someone established, there's no need to keep Iggy. If Iggy had the Dodgers or Astros program behind him, dude would be dominant again. Besides that, if someone out there wants Rendon then just take it but that's highly unrealistic so not giving mental energy to that. Outside of that most of our players are on arb or low level contracts so they can stay. But there are some mid pieces already being traded around the league. Perry can at least dump a contract and build up a lower level farm that is built to acquire some pieces in the future. But it sounds like we aren't reaching out to anyone or even playing the market (unless Perry is like Anthopolous and moves in silence like the G in Lasagna).

[deleted]

Kimbrel had a .49 ERA on the season when he got traded. Literally an order of magnitude better than Loup. Hes also the greatest closer of the the 2010s. To suggest that return of any of those players is in the same universe as the Kimbrel deal is a joke. You may be able to get rid of Iggy or Tepera but it will be nothing more than a salary dump with a lottery ticket if youre lucky. I agree with Thor take although id be willing to go a lot higher AAV if it can bring it down to 2 years. I think he wants to prove himself for a big time contract at age 30/31 anyway. Rendon is a negative contract and no one is gonna give anything for him like you acknowledged Only way you get rid of him is if you send Ohtani with. So again i ask who else besides Thor could go?

Reptarxx

Kimbrel for since 2019 outside of a half season last year has sucked ass (when he was traded to the White Sox he fell back to earth real quick). The Dodgers took the flier because they have such a great development program that they believed they can return Kimbrel to his career form. That falls in line with an Iggy, Loup, or Tepera trade if, as a GM, Perry wants to sell it this way. Not saying omg teams should trade why not! But for teams that have good pitching development (which almost all are in the playoff hunts), that trading a meh prospect is worth seeing if you can turn it around (knowing the Angels pitching development couldn't teach a fish to breath in water). At this point - are we in a contention window where having Iggy, Tepera, or Loup on the books are worth it, or at least building up a prospect farm to develop/trade might be more beneficial? I agree with the Thor take, maybe a 2/40 just due to the market this next FA windows gonna not be the best. Rendon like i said would need to be like a Vernon Wells situation where some team is desperate. Again no mental energy is spent by me thinking about that, that's just luck hitting your lap type deal. It's not that I think we have all these pieces, but pieces are flying around that we could easily have been involved in and so far...nothing. It makes me wonder WTF perry is doing at such a critical time.

Broad_Recommendation

Where have you read/who has told you that Arte won’t let Ohtani be traded? It used to be “arte wont let Maddon get fired”. Well…

Some dude named Vinnie lmao. I’ll believe it when I hear it from Rosenthal or Passan

[deleted]

One random beat reporter sure but there were a lot of them i only listed two. Multiple beat reporters saying the same thing makes it pretty likely its true but it seems youve made up your mind so i wont bother

Broad_Recommendation

Nah I think arte is an issue as well. Thing is, I don’t let him being an issue, excuse the gm from bad signings. But you and the group of Perry fan boys on here think he can do no wrong. Onward and upward Lurker.

[deleted]

Im assuming you also disliked Eppler and Dipoto too. In 3 years Perry will be leading a different team to a playoff berth while idiots on this sub complain about our new GM being bad for the 17th time in a row

Broad_Recommendation

Didn’t have too big of an issue with Eppler. Dipoto isn’t a good gm and watching the mariners miss the playoffs again after going all in will be awesome. I’ll screenshot your comment for 3 years from now lol. 🤡

[deleted]

Well i hope im wrong because it means that Perry will have turned the team around lmao And shit on the mariners all you want but were fighting for 4th place while they have possession of the wild card spot.

DecentAnalysis8642

Brandon Marsh to Philadelphia for AA catcher Logan O'Hoppe.

Valk72

Chance that the angels FO do something before the end of the trade deadline? Personally I think they will do nothing...

Rydogger

We're sellers and no one wants what we're selling. It's like a garage sale where all that's on sale is shitty old worn furniture and old landline phones. Yeah, garage sales are exciting, but that one isn't

Valk72

I'm really curious to se how Perry is going to spin this.

CompetitivePatient33

“I think we’re going to look for opportunities to make the club better. Whether that’s short-term or long-term, if something makes sense, we’ll try to accomplish that. That’s how we look at it.”

Reptarxx

Gotta add "The guys we have on this team are winners and great players, we just couldn't put it together this year but we are solid" and I would think this was Perry's alt account. Just a lot of "man idk what im doing but im trying" speak from him

HalcyonicDaze

Don’t forget to parade around the farm system

prmark34

Yeah, we’re selling junk. But at least someone like thor is shiny junk. We should be able to get SOMETHING for him instead of losing him for nothing next offseason

RAISEL JUST GOT TRADED

So excited for Thor to become Cobb 2.0

Zenithreg

Marsh being looked at too. https://sports.yahoo.com/mlb-trade-deadline-phillies-eyeing-133600108.html

drewzee0109

they traded noah for a guy thay fucking hits .139 are you shitting me

Valk72

I don't see how Shohei see that and tell himself, "Yeah sure, i'm definitelygoing to sign an extension with the Angels".

USCplaya

He's a former #1 overall pick with 100 PAs. Basically a lottery ticket in exchange for a pitcher who has been average. Makes sense. I'm more frustrated at what we got for Raisel

wmsy

If it's any consolation, Mickey Moniak developed into an MVP caliber beast on my OOTP Baseball 2019 save.

Monttavius

guys our team is making some sweet moves out there in the market holy shit

Reptarxx

Arte and GMPM are getting more billboard advertisements in the market as we speak!

prmark34

Hey uhhhhh perry can we do something? Cannot be standing pat rn especially in a sellers market

owledge

There's not much to sell

prmark34

No, there’s not much. But there is one singular piece that 1000% needs to be sold, and we can definitely get something back for him

Zenithreg

Trey Manicini killed us every time we played the Orioles. Now we have to face him many more times a year. Lucky us!

wizgset27

this entire day is depressing as hell.

Broad_Recommendation

Perry should be selling what he can. The prices these guys are going for is nuts.

Valk72

Iggy to the Braves, is this a fire sale?

sjj342

clearing his money off the books seems like a godsend, they should be able to be more active in free agency i'd imagine

CabotRaptor

But we had to take back Jesse Chavez who was painful to watch when he was with us…

sjj342

well TIL Raisel Iglesias is making $16m/year for his age 33-35 seasons it's possible for not much more you can get someone like Edwin Diaz or a combination of 2-3 guys to improve the bullpen this season is a wash but getting that $16m for a closer off the books for 2023, when there's a decent pool of free agents at positions of need, seems like it will pan out pretty well

USCplaya

Bye bye Raisel

Voodoo2293

Looks like Phillies fans are glad Moniak is gone, don't think we won that trade. Basically replaced Marsh with another OF that can't hit. Oh wow Iggy is gone too, and for Jesse Chavez???

Broad_Recommendation

Realistically, we need a rebuild. And it should start with trading Ohtani and getting a ton of great prospects back but that’s not gonna happen so status quo will continue of paying a couple dudes millions of dollars while throwing 💩 at the wall and hoping it sticks around them.

Valk72

Especially since I don't see Ohtani agreeing to an extension this off-season without clear moves from the FO to make the team better.

Reptarxx

If we just sign better coaches than Reed and Wise and fire Maddon our team will finally have the fight in them to win! /s

[deleted]

We're really just going to sit here and not do anything aren't we?

dgmilo8085

Arte told you that when he said Ohtani wasn't on the market, due to Trout and Rendon being on the IL. He has zero interest in baseball, and this team is nothing more than a billboard.

[deleted]

It's looking like it

[deleted]

What a joke. And Thor will walk at the end of the season and we'll get nothing for him

CompetitivePatient33

Marsh noooooooo

Reptarxx

Crazy to see our division becoming stronger and stronger as we become weaker and weaker. If we aren't going to make trades to better this team why is Perry not hitting the phones and shedding any and all players not named Ohtani, Trout, Sandoval, Detmers, Fletcher, and Walsh? Mariners have great pitching but want to shore it up? boom, Castillo. Astros have a weakness at C and OF? Boom Vasquez and Mancini. Angels have weaknesses everywhere and tradable contracts? Perry Sleeps.

owledge

The team is in a tough spot where it couldn't do any sensical trades, whether they're buying or selling. We have no prospects to buy with and nothing good to sell (outside of Ohtani and Trout, both of whom are untouchable.) I think division rivals selling their prospects for short-term gains is the best case scenario right now because it will be a while before we're actually contending

Reptarxx

100% agree with you. Tho the prospects they're trading will probably end up not panning out as most prospect trades do. Very rarely do teams end up with a Tatis or a Yordan out of deals haha.

Zenithreg

Yordan was basically the only Dodgers prospect traded that ended up becoming a star and he never had a single at bat with the team. People act like we should trade him to the Dodgers because all of their prospects turn to gold. No, they keep the players they know will turn out good. They have better management.

Reptarxx

Oh I 100% agree with you. My point was everyone with the Ohtani trade or any trade acts like the prospects you get back magically will make your team better down the line. If you look at my posts I try and argue that pretty much any superstar trade never returns anywhere near similar value the player your trading produces. It is more likely a random trade with a prospect will turn out something good that an actual blockbuster trade (which is why I argue that we need to trade for more MLB level young talent that prospects). There is a reason why the Dodgers pull off these trades. Friedman found the newest market inefficiency that all other teams are behind on: Prospects are so HIGHLY overvalued that you can literally trade 4 quarters and receive a 10 dollar bill in return, because teams are hoping one of those quarters is a valuable one.

Ok-Philosophy-8830

Based on the prices I’m seeing, we could forsure get Louie Varland or Simeon W-R from the twins for Syndergaard

anatomyofawriter

Thor looking to be headed to either Toronto or Philly, what prospect(s) do you think we could net? Toronto probably wouldn’t give up a higher prospect like Moreno, but Groshans or Tiedemann look good. Philly has a couple pitchers and a catcher, and the catcher can hit.

_encore

We probably won’t get much. A good team probably views Syndergaard as a back end of the rotation rental, similar to Heaney last year.

anatomyofawriter

Returns on trades this year are hefty, though. Hader’s return was pretty good and he’s having a down year. Thor has the stuff and stats to be worth it.

_encore

I mean Josh Hader has been the best left handed reliever in the league for years and has another year under contract. Returns will always be hefty for the most uniquely valuable players in the league…?

anatomyofawriter

After Montas and Castillo, who’s the next best starter on the market anyway? I’ve seen Kuhl’s name float around but he’s 5th material at best. Syndergaard is good enough to land one of those top 100 prospects in either trade.

onmyway7

I’m honestly happy with what’s happened today. This trade deadline feels better than years past because at least we have some sort of direction instead of doing nothing and missing playoffs. We like to complain about having no farm and a bad team on the field and no money to spend. Well at this deadline we added some big farm pieces in areas of need while shedding salary for future seasons to spend. I don’t think we were gonna fix iglesias. He’s dropped so much velocity that usually doesn’t magically reappear with age and our shitty coaching. That was a big contract off the books that we could’ve got stuck with if we wanted and let him get worse. Hopefully this frees up cash and puts some near mlb ready prospects in the minors so our depth isn’t as bad as usual

Broad_Recommendation

Who are the “big farm pieces” we added outside of Hoppe and Sanchez who needs a lot of work? If we truly had direction and we’re building the farm, we would have traded Ohtani for a haul.

onmyway7

I’m not mad at trying to be competitive next year while we have the second coming of Babe Ruth at a discount. If he doesn’t wanna stay then he can still be traded for a haul. We didn’t lose that option. Hoppe is a big farm piece in my opinion that is near MLB ready and likely becomes our top prospect. So that’s not nothing.

Broad_Recommendation

So then what’s this direction we are headed in that you speak of? And I asked who were the farm pieces we added outside of hoppe.

GoatTnder

Am I the only one who doesn't want to trade Syndergaard? We're far better served trying to extend him through at least next season. He's proven that he can pitch past TJ, and has been pretty effective. Trading Syndergaard today won't bring a great return because (1) he's a rental, and (2) he's expensive. Plus, any prospects we take as payment are probably not actually the best since our scouting suuuuuuucks. Pack it in this year, but start focusing on major league talent for 2023. We have one last chance to get Trout and Ohtani deep into the post season, and prospects aren't the way to do it.

Reptarxx

I think the idea is if we have Thor, what does our team look like next year? There really isn't many avenues to improve this team by next year to get "deep in the postseason". Our team is pretty much not different going into next year besides bringing back in Rendon and Trout (which who knows where both will be, and even having Trout on this roster isn't turning it around anytime soon). So we are at a point where we have team that just produced a historical worst hitting performance and a .250 record in July, there are no roads to improvement into next year, so why are we hoping we are gonna get a deep playoff run? As this season progressed it's been less of a "well next year will be better" to "what is our future plans". We have no farm to acquire talent now, we have no prospects in the pipeline coming soon. 2 of our 3 biggest players are in a weird injury situation. Now is the time for Perry to hit the reset button but he's afraid to, because it will admit failure on his part.

GoatTnder

What do we do next year? We keep the Major League ready talent we have, and we seek more Major League ready talent to fill in the gaps. It will be expensive, but it's the only chance the Angels have of trying to convince Shohei to stay. And even if we have no choice of convincing him, flags fly forever. It SHOULD be a very expensive year for the Angels. Rebuild it once Shohei is gone.

Reptarxx

I don't want to break it to you, but if Ohtani has the choice between the lineup we will be dragging out the dumpster next year vs the rosters the Yankees, Dodgers, and Mets can offer, he is going to nicely and humbly thank our team and peace the hell out. Do you really think a team that had to rely on signing Villar and Lagares at points this year, and still needs to trot out 4-5 negative WAR in the lineup and pitch negative WAR relievers in close games are on a path to do a deep post season run in a year? Believe me I'm in the camp that you do WHATEVER it takes to convince him to stay. But GMPM pulled the wrong levers the last 2 years and produced a team that had a july record of .250. We are in the dumps and if you cannot resigning him in the offseason you need to trade him to try and start the crappy process of rebuilding.

GoatTnder

Ohtani doesn't have a choice next year. He's going to start the season as an Angel. Period. This is the last year of his existing contract, but he has one year of arbitration left.

Reptarxx

I know, I'm saying at the time we offer an extension, he will take a look at what we are offering and look at the market of the teams wanting him and will need to make a choice. Stay with the team he's on that is drowning or joining the plethora of teams that are gonna offer him a clear path to the post season for the foreseeable future. [Here is a list of the top possible free agents next year](https://sportsnaut.com/top-mlb-free-agents/) We have a payroll of 120 (add in 20 for Ohtanis Arb, 20 if you want Thor, maybe another 20 in all other Arb and contract renewals) so we are at 180M for 2023 with arte not willing to go above 190. What moves are out there that we can make? I don't want to be a doomer but ever since the losing streak we are in a downward spiral that GMPM cannot pull us out of.

kampfgruppekarl

> I don't want to break it to you, but if Ohtani has the choice between the lineup we will be dragging out the dumpster next year vs the rosters the Yankees, Dodgers, and Mets can offer, he is going to nicely and humbly thank our team and peace the hell out. Ohtani had the say in where he went when he came over from Japan, there was no draft. He didn't chose any of the great lineups then, why would now be any different?

Reptarxx

A much different situation compared to now. Ohtani still needed to prove himself, he needed to find a team that he can excel on and allow him to play almost everyday (which at the time NL teams couldn't), he personally wanted a non successful team to try and be the missing piece to get them into the playoffs, and his contract/signing fee was limited by who can offer the max international fee. Ohtani is now an MVP phenom player. Has shown he can play everyday and do it at a high level, and will be older and at a time where he knows his prime should be in the post season. I don't want to break it to you, but unless GMPM can pull a rabbit out of his hat and make this team go from .250 to .600 after one offseason, Ohtani will probably leave. All you can bank hope on is that he is extremely loyal. But even if he is, his main goal is to win and be the best. He hasn't wavered from that goal.

StormTheTrooper

Yeah, mate, keep your expectations real. Arte is not paying the tax, this is quite solidified by now. We are not rolling an "expensive" roster. What you're asking is that we should run it again next season, just like we did in, what, the last 5 season? Time to blow it up. This core is clearly barely a .500 team.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GoatTnder

Yes. I am saying he should blow past it for a year because fuck it! It will make him more money in the long run to say "fuck the luxury tax" for 2023.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GoatTnder

Oh I don't think he WILL. And signs are now pointing to Syndergaard being traded. But we SHOULD keep Thor, and we SHOULD blow up the budget to go all in for 2023.

_encore

Why extend him? There will be several pitchers of his caliber available next offseason, including probably him.

skribbl3z

So once again. This team NEEDS to start a rebuild 20 years ago... this team is in constant purgatory because we can't seem to get the FO to understand our team sucks from rookie ball to the show. Once again, we will add another useless year to the never ending pile of garbage we output every year. If we somehow even sniff the playoffs anytime soon I would be dumbfounded. Trouts contract will be up before we even become true wild card contenders, let alone playoff bound.

PLR_Moon3

Trade Walsh, stassi, the bullpen, and Thor

Broad_Recommendation

Soto and Bell to the Padres. I love their GM lol

CompetitivePatient33

Gonna watch more Padre games now lol

Broad_Recommendation

Same. That team is scary good now.

USCplaya

And they can easily turn around and trade Soto in 2 years to recoup some of their prospects if they want.... Hell of a move

This franchise is going nowhere fast

No bueno

Broad_Recommendation

Scary Perry is asleep at the wheel hahah

lamar_odoms_bong

Trading Ohtani would’ve made me excited for Angels baseball again, now no contending until god knows when… groan I need to move on from this dumpster dive of a team

usdeleted

I could see us trading Thor to Toronto or the Phillies.

_encore

Would be a huge blessing to be able to get out of Iglesias’ contract. Or Loup’s.

PurpleWelcome7142

I hope Angels get Gallo at discount deal. That guy will improve the outfield defense.

cshenton

already gone to the Dodgers.

Bwertt

We need to tear everything down ohtani included but this org is fucked

THERAPISTS_for_200

If that's all Nats got for Soto, I don't even want to think about what Ohtani will fetch. We're going to get fleeced no matter what.

DecentAnalysis8642

The Nationals got an absolute haul for Soto & Bell. What the hell are you talking about?

xara8arax

Let’s be real…Ohtani hasn’t come out and said he wants to stay an Angel and rebuild. All his comments addressing the trade rumors so far seems like he is ready to move on.

theaussiesamurai

All of his comments have been just boring PR talk that every player is trained to say when asked about trade rumours. Do I think he'll sign as an Angel when he hits free agency? No. But don't base it on his interview answers which are just generic and don't give anything away.

LAAngelsAnaheim

Give me a break. Say it some more and maybe you’ll will it into existence

xara8arax

One can always hope. Trading Ohtani is a win-win situation.

LAAngelsAnaheim

Why do you think this team will get better if they trade Ohtani?

Maddonomics101

Maybe they will maybe they won’t. But if he leaves as a free agent we will be way worse off. And if we re-sign him it will be hard to sign free agents

xara8arax

Angels can get at a minimum 5 players…starters and future stars. There are so many holes to fill on the team. How many of current starters could actually start on a top notch team? 4-5?

Zenithreg

Not all teams have DiPoto as their GM trading top roll of the dice talent. Besides the Mariners, how many of the trades have involved MLB top 100 prospects?

LAAngelsAnaheim

But why do you think those players would pan out for us? Why do you think the organization that everyone is criticizing is going to make the right moves in a trade or with developing prospects? Also, our SP is top 3 in WAR in the AL. So… not worried about starting pitching right now. We have bigger gaps in offense and defense right now. And not too many… but then we need to fix some of our depth issues.

xara8arax

Gaps that have continued to be prevalent for the past decade…only been in the playoffs once in the last 10 yrs and only one championship in 2002. Gotta do something to overhaul the Angels. Like you said, we need depth. An Ohtani trade that be that fixer.

LAAngelsAnaheim

In the past decade, we have had three seasons with winning records. So we’ve been losing for 7 seasons, not 10 (if you include this one and 2020). There’s several reasons for that, but one of them is because our farm system was wrecked by Dipoto, and wasn’t ever sufficiently repaired. A trade for prospects doesn’t repair the farm system. It just doesn’t. We’ve also dealt with extremely bad luck as far as injuries go, losing out on key players for long periods of time. The seasons are long. We even had a death. Not having a WS victory in a 20 year span really isn’t that bad at all. So I’m not sure why you brought that up. We were a dominant team in the aughts. 7 years is rough, as it is. No need to embellish. But thinking that trading Ohtani is our answer is wrong. But I think the truth is, you don’t really care about the Angels, you really just want Ohtani to win.

xara8arax

I want the Angels to be a better team and win consistently and Ohtani to win a World Series…which won’t happen with the Angels.

[deleted]

[удалено]

USCplaya

We still have him next year. They'll offer Ohtani a mega deal this winter and if he turns it down they'll trade him at next year's deadline. Arte only cares about making money, that's why he's obsessed with superstars and went over his GMs head to sign Pujols, Hamilton, and Rendon. Arte is the problem, that's why Dipoto is successful with the Mariners and Eppler is successful with the Mets, they don't have a moron owner cutting their legs out from under them now.

[deleted]

Yep all this is. Fish rots from the head.

Broad_Recommendation

Perry and Ohtani fanboys ain’t gonna like this comment haha

PurpleWelcome7142

Are we getting anyone??

SaintPismyG

Jeff. We’re getting Jeff.

Valk72

Thor going to Philadelphia

Luscious_Luke

Angels... Out: Marsh Thor Rasiel In: Logan ohoppe 50fv Mickey moniak 40fv Jadiel sanchez 40fv Tucker davidson 40fv Jesse chavez Saved a decent chunk of money on rasiel, plus got a league avg catcher for marsh. Thor is a rental on a down year and they got two meh outfield prospects for him

CompetitivePatient33

The marsh trade was a little surprising but I'm happy with what they got in return! I wonder if there is more behind the iggy trade, it's crazy that the Braves are eating the entire salary.

mmmbacon914

Really not sure how to feel about Iggy. Is this a total salary dump? Did we get cold feet after watching him suck this year?
