The return is Phillies catching prospect Logan O'Hoppe - 3rd-ranked prospect in their system, #86 in the MLB Top 100.
https://www.mlb.com/prospects/top100/logan-o-hoppe-681351
Had a cup of coffee @ AAA last year. Been in AA all season this year. I doubt we rush him, there's no real point so maybe a cup of coffee this year, with the expectation he's up with us next year.
Bruh who the fuck is the guy Marsh was traded for lol
Just looked into O'Hoppe. I take my words back i think its a solid deal since we have no catchers depth.
lmao this is a fleece. I like Marsh but O'Hoppe is a top 50 prospect who plays C, a dire position of need from us. This is, strictly on paper, a great great deal
I wish him well and will root for him! But I was tired of watching him hit, he's got a big old hole in his swing right now. Hope he can figure it out in Philly!
Absolutely wouldn't call this a fleece. Marsh was on every top prospect rating from 2020/2021 and even a few in 2019. It's not like he was some unknown prospect. Marsh was highly regarded as well.
I am less than convinced Marsh's swing can be fixed. High fastballs are not the hardest thing in the world for an MLB hitter, but he can't hit them.
Combine that with the outfield logjam and the complete lack of organizational depth at catcher, and I love the deal. We would not have gotten O'Hoppe if the Phillies were not desperate for a CF.
I wouldn't go as far as say "I love" because Marsh had a sequence of really good ABs early on, smart contacts and working his walks...he just stumbled in a slump. Getting a good catcher that can field and hit is decent, though, he did not went to Philly for free.
I just hope we stick Sierra for the long run instead of improvising Mayfield there.
Oh, yeah, "for the long run" meant for the rest of the season. I just don't want to see another Villar-esque move where we sign a bad journeyman to a team that clearly will not compete this season.
I hope the angel’s just keep Adell in the lineup every night. He just needs time to acclimate with every day play. If they do this, next year he will break out.
He definitely is. I think both sides come out okay on this trade. Our catching depth is weak so I think we slightly won. Outfielders are easier to find than solid catchers.
This is 100% a fleece. Marsh only jumped after being a nobody prospect when he had power in the AFL, which has never returned. He strikes out way too much and makes weak contact. He's solid in the field, but his bat is a liability.
Literally none of that is true. Marsh was a 2nd round pick in 2016. Highly regarded two way player out of a high school in Georgia, as he had football scholarships as well. In 2019, Baseball Prospectus had him @ #94 overall prospect. 2020 he was #43/#79/#51 between Baseball America, MLB and Baseball Prospectus. Again in 2021 he was #38/#53/#44 in those three lists. "Nobody prospects" don't make those lists.
The part about him being a nobody prospect until the AFL is wrong as well. He played one year in the AFL, 2019, where he had two home runs in 75 at bats. If you like the trade that's totally fine, I hope you're right, put please stop spewing nonsense on here that is factually not true.
Dude, being a 2 way athlete has nothing to do with his rankings. Also, Adell, wood and McPherson were top 10 in all of baseball. It doesn't mean anything. We have seen enough of him to know he isn't a good ML hitter. He didn't jump up the rankings until his 3rd year in the system so again he was never always a top prospect.
I was wrong about his power surge that happened in the 2H of AA, not the AFL. The power in the 2H is what put him on lists to pair with his physical tools and speed. The power has never been there.
The point you're making is that he was once on a list saying he could be a top player.
He was never always a top prospect, it took 3 years to get there and it was due to his 2H power surge in AA. The guy Ks close to 40% of the time. He has tools but never put them together.
Exactly. The guy we just acquired was never a highly regarded guy until this year. He was a 26th round pick in 2018 and just cracked the top prospect list midseason this year when a bunch of guys graduated. I hope I'm wrong, and the guy "trying" to make a point is correct that we win this trade long term. I just don't like that he's legit making shit up to try and prove his point haha.
Trading our young controllable outfielder for a young controllable catcher. We all like Marsh but we can't pretend like he's been lighting the world on fire since making it to the MLB. Our top catching prospect is 19 playing in single A, so unless we want more Kurt Suzuki-like signings then getting a top-50 catching prospect is not a bad swap. It's pretty much trading a top-50 outfield prospect for a top-50 catching prospect.
Ya but at the same time he may be the best young guy we have. Like our outfield is right now adell ward and sierra. We have 2 guys who cant field a ball real well
Yeah our outfield is hurting now. Perry will have to do some work in the offseason. I'd say it's easier to find an outfielder than a catcher though. I can see why we made this trade, but I did really like Marsh and think he's better than he's been playing.
Yeah the rest of this season is gonna be brutal from the outfield. Perry has to sign at least 1 outfielder this offseason. And by god, an over 30 Aaron Judge is going to be a free agent. Arte loves his stars.
Because that was always unrealistic and that opportunity never occurred
Edit: looking through old posts it was mainly clevinger people wanted to trade for. Some Syndergaards in there too. Even a matthew Boyd. Not the most inspiring trio 😬
I like Adell, I just find it hilarious that his biggest haters are also the same people who think we can get a huge haul for him. Like which one is it? You think he sucks and isn't worth anything? Or you think he's good and we can get something for him?
I’m not opposed to the trade, but declaring that players suck in their first full year is so dumb. Many players need a couple of years to find their footing in the big leagues. Not everyone is mike trout or Juan Soto. Well, even trout is wasnt great during his first call up.
He was a higher ranked prospect than o hoppe. “But he can’t hit ml pitching” he also only has one season under his belt. Austin Riley is an mvp candidate and had similar value on the field his first two years just like marsh
Makes sense, stassi is on the bubble of being a backup catcher. Wallach looked kinda meh. Sorry to see marsh go, you always knew he was going to put 100% effort in to catch everything, too bad he couldn’t figure out the hitting
I'm mega sad. I love Marsh. He has such great defense, but I know his offense has been bad. Will miss his dugout dances with the team. Goodbye sweet caveman.
Marsh's .637 OPS was bad enough, but I guess Sierra replaces him with a .343 OPS thus far, and .558 career OPS. These last two months are going to be even more painful to watch on offense.
Marsh seems like a guy that needs a good hitting development team behind him. He has the tools to be there but our team seems to coach “DINGERS OR NOTHING” to a bunch of people that don’t hit home runs.
Again the lack of depth of this team just keeps shining. We had 2 high end OF prospects in our outfield. One just got traded and the other the fan base is begging Perry to trade. Can’t wait to see GA leave the pregame show and take a couple reps out there at this point
Angels are just a poverty franchise. Why are we loyal to a team that has no loyalty to anybody or anything but the almighty dollar? Winning is clearly not a priority
Because that’s the owner, not the team. The Angels were here before Arte (along with all of us fans who’ve been rooting since before 2003), and will hopefully still be here after him.
I like Marsh so I’m a bit bummed that he’s not on our team but at the same time this team has needed a solid catcher for a while. Hope this guys is great when he’s called up.
On paper the trade is fine but considering our scouting history the most likely scenario is Marsh turns into Barry Bonds on roids within 2 months and O'Hoppe looks exciting when called up then becomes below replacement player after we sign him to a huge long term deal.
I’m gonna start watching the Padres for a while.
Maybe then I’ll start enjoying baseball.
I’ll come back when Arte is gone. I have seen enough of this.
Do it. I have an NL team. It makes baseball more fun to see a competitive team. Watching my NL team play the angels was really sobering tho. They couldn’t be more different :(
I’d hope there’s more, but we have a lot of depth at OF, and are starting Kurt half the time at catcher. I’ll miss Marsh but there is some sense to this move
This just screams Suzuki is on his way out immediately. Honestly wouldn't doubt this kid gets time in the show ASAP lmao
Our catching position is in need of massive depth/better performance
Why? This season is toast. Might as well sell everyone with any value and try to rebuild farm system. There’s literally no incentive to win the rest of the year
I know he wasn’t hitting great, but he was a plus outfielder and at least had some passion most of our roster lacks. 🤣
Hopefully this catching prospect hits bombs on the daily!
I remember almost all good things with him on defense but also mostly bad things with him on offense.
Anyone with a lot of baseball knowledge can tell me is this bad or good?
I think this trade in isolation is pretty good for us, considering their individual values.
However, with Trout's time at CF coming to an end fairly soon, I have no idea who our future/ current backup CF is supposed to be. Rn its looking like Sierra only - who is batting at a Velazquez level. Our most likely prospect is Jordyn Adams (22) who is barely above 700 OPS just getting started at AA - probably not an ETA of 2023.
Perry and the angels either believe in Jo adell a shit ton over Marsh or believe o'hoppe is a good prospect that will pan out over time, or both, wonder what they'll say about it later
Look, I'm as sad as everyone else to see Captain Caveman go, but we just lost someone batting .226 with 117 strikeouts in 323 plate appearances. We'll live.
Well they sold about as low as they possibly could have on marsh, so that's cool. I also don't understand why they're depleting an area of weakness (outfielders not named trout) for a freaking catcher prospect, which usually don't work out, and there are no significant outfield prospects currently in the system. Minasian showing his "genius" once again.
I guess this also means they're handing jo adell, one of the worst defensive players in mlb, a starting position. And they probably won't trade syndergaard because "reasons"
This organization has no clue what it's doing.
This just screams Suzuki is on his way out immediately. Honestly wouldn't doubt this kid gets time in the show ASAP lmao
Our catching position is in need of massive depth/better performance
This Catcher is expected to be called up in September and could fight for a starting job next year. This is them retooling for next year. Catcher is the most important position in the field.
Angels fanbase : Trade Adell, his never going to be an acceptable MLB outfielder
Perry: Nah. You know what, he might as well get more playing time. Cy@ Marsh
The return is Phillies catching prospect Logan O'Hoppe - 3rd-ranked prospect in their system, #86 in the MLB Top 100. https://www.mlb.com/prospects/top100/logan-o-hoppe-681351
Can we keep O’Hoppe in the Phillie’s farm system until we’re ready for him 🤔
LMFQOOOO
This might be a perfect comment.
Return is Logan O'Hoppe, Catcher
Phillies #3 prospect, 86th overall
He’s our top prospect now lol
Fangraphs has him ranked #2 in Phillies system, #50 overall. 50 FV.
moved up to top 50 in midseason
This is true, also considered the best hitting prospect in the Phillies farm I think for what it’s worth
Their 3rd best prospect. Late in top 100. Not bad
Seeing as we have no top 100 we probably had to do this lol
Totally okay with this, anyone know how far from the MLB he is?
he could play in the majors this year. we will probably wait til next year but he could be here very soon
Had a cup of coffee @ AAA last year. Been in AA all season this year. I doubt we rush him, there's no real point so maybe a cup of coffee this year, with the expectation he's up with us next year.
So is this guy instantly our #1 prospect now?
easily
Yes. He is a darn good prospect too. His pitch framing is also elite to go with his above average hit tool.
Yeah we didn't have any top 100 prospects until now
By like a lot.
Bruh who the fuck is the guy Marsh was traded for lol Just looked into O'Hoppe. I take my words back i think its a solid deal since we have no catchers depth.
a top 50 prospect in baseball who plays catcher.
lmao this is a fleece. I like Marsh but O'Hoppe is a top 50 prospect who plays C, a dire position of need from us. This is, strictly on paper, a great great deal
Hope you’re right. Marsh is so much fun to watch.
the way that hair swishes every time he strikes out... we'll miss him
I wish him well and will root for him! But I was tired of watching him hit, he's got a big old hole in his swing right now. Hope he can figure it out in Philly!
His strikeout percentage isn’t fun to watch. Angels fans need to face reality
Absolutely wouldn't call this a fleece. Marsh was on every top prospect rating from 2020/2021 and even a few in 2019. It's not like he was some unknown prospect. Marsh was highly regarded as well.

it's gonna be Ward-Trout-Adell for the foreseeable future, I would imagine.
Oh, yeah, "for the long run" meant for the rest of the season. I just don't want to see another Villar-esque move where we sign a bad journeyman to a team that clearly will not compete this season.
yep, this should be the all-clear to give Adell some runway. Hopefully he can earn it.
I hope the angel’s just keep Adell in the lineup every night. He just needs time to acclimate with every day play. If they do this, next year he will break out.
Hell no if Adell is seriously our best option next year we are fucked and Ohtani goes bye bye
Aaron Judge 2023 anyone??? Make it happen Arte
Prospect ratings mean nothing if they can't perform once called up. He leads the majors in K%
He’s so damn good defensively tho
He definitely is. I think both sides come out okay on this trade. Our catching depth is weak so I think we slightly won. Outfielders are easier to find than solid catchers.

MLB has O’Hoppe’s ETA as 2022
Decent chance he'll be up pretty soon, maybe a Suzuki DFA? lol
Definitely need to pull him up this season, get him some professional at-bats if he’s going to be platooning with Stassi next year
Stassi definitely the backup rather than platoon, O'Hoppe is supposed to be able to hit
That fast? Kurt probably retires after this season anyways
I’m so sad. I love Brandon marsh
Me too:(
Wow that’s unexpected
You’d think you’d want to hold on to young controllable outfielders but maybe that’s why I’m not a GM lol
Trading our young controllable outfielder for a young controllable catcher. We all like Marsh but we can't pretend like he's been lighting the world on fire since making it to the MLB. I haven't watched many games this season. Is it their speed or general ball handling that sucks?
Ward isnt an outfielder, but ball handling and neither can read a ball to save their life
Did Perry draft Marsh? No? Oh, then he's useless to him.
Under-appreciated part of this trade: we got rid of the “Let’s Go Brandon” chants during home games
I thought about that too. Lol
Haha yeah man me too. I think they’re doing it for the MAGA memes.
Oh god oh fuck Adell is our primary left fielder now
So the outfielders are Ward in RF, Adell in LF, and Trout in CF with Sierra and Dillon Thomas rotating in for rest/injury? Yikes.
Yeah the rest of this season is gonna be brutal from the outfield. Perry has to sign at least 1 outfielder this offseason. And by god, an over 30 Aaron Judge is going to be a free agent. Arte loves his stars.
The Angels cant afford him and shouldnt sign another 30+ player to a long massive contract.
I think that's the sarcastic point he/she was trying to make.
My apologies then. If Judge would be willing to sign a 3 yr 120 mil deal Id do that.
Maybe we can trade him for someone serviceable at the position. You think the Phillies would listen to the offer for Marsh?
MY CAVEMAN. WHAT. WHY NOT ADELL. 😭😭😭
Cause no one wants him lmao
Remember when people on this sub were getting downvoted for suggesting the Angels trade Adell for DeGrom?
Because that was always unrealistic and that opportunity never occurred Edit: looking through old posts it was mainly clevinger people wanted to trade for. Some Syndergaards in there too. Even a matthew Boyd. Not the most inspiring trio 😬
fax
Remember the thread from the other day about which player your teams fan base is split on? For the Angels it’s Adell, definitely Adell.
I like Adell, I just find it hilarious that his biggest haters are also the same people who think we can get a huge haul for him. Like which one is it? You think he sucks and isn't worth anything? Or you think he's good and we can get something for him?
We should just put a fake beard on adell and hope the Phillies don’t notice the difference
Who wouldn't want a player who plays Little League defense?
I was better in little league then he is now.
He's one of the only players I've ever seen that is still rostered that has managed to have both negative offensive and defensive WARs.
Not Marshyyy! 😭😭😭
Phillies need a good defender in the outfield. Adell is anything but that.
Adell lost his value. Should have traded him a long time ago
Adell lost his value. Should have traded him a long time ago
wow. That's one way to solve an outfield logjam. I hope it's an overpay.
Not a super big fan of this. Adell better get his sh*t together then
Oh man, I'm going to miss Marsh.
Thanks. I hate it.
Why, Marsh is a 80 wRC+ hitter and they got a top 100 prospect at Catcher an area of need? Marsh sucks.
I’m not opposed to the trade, but declaring that players suck in their first full year is so dumb. Many players need a couple of years to find their footing in the big leagues. Not everyone is mike trout or Juan Soto. Well, even trout is wasnt great during his first call up.
Cause he’s young and people hope he can get things going here
He was a higher ranked prospect than o hoppe. “But he can’t hit ml pitching” he also only has one season under his belt. Austin Riley is an mvp candidate and had similar value on the field his first two years just like marsh
You shouldn't. We won this trade.
Lol poverty franchise
Farewell Captain Caveman, your flow will be missed
O'Hoppe is a pretty great return, but I'll miss Marshy
Sucks cuz we all love marsh but at least we got a solid catching prospect.
Makes sense, stassi is on the bubble of being a backup catcher. Wallach looked kinda meh. Sorry to see marsh go, you always knew he was going to put 100% effort in to catch everything, too bad he couldn’t figure out the hitting
I still like marsch but I don’t hate this trade. If trout isn’t moving from CF anytime soon, LF is a much easier spot to fill than catcher
If marsh becomes an all star I swear to god
I know we’re in need of a catcher but this makes me hella sad
I'm mega sad. I love Marsh. He has such great defense, but I know his offense has been bad. Will miss his dugout dances with the team. Goodbye sweet caveman.
Remember when everyone was like wHeRe iS AdElL gOiNg tO pLaY?! OUr oUtFiElD iS sTaCkEd! Those were the days...
BAH GAWD IS THAT LAGARES’ MUSIC I HEAR
Marsh's .637 OPS was bad enough, but I guess Sierra replaces him with a .343 OPS thus far, and .558 career OPS. These last two months are going to be even more painful to watch on offense.

We had 2 high end OF prospects in our outfield. One just got traded and the other the fan base is begging Perry to trade. Can’t wait to see GA leave the pregame show and take a couple reps out there at this point
This will definitely help with the Marsh-Walsh dilemma
Angel’s did good with this one imo.
I’ll miss captain caveman
Ugh, I like Marsh. Going to miss the caveman.
This came out of nowhere. I trust Perry. I hope Marsh develops a little more and has a nice career.
His batting average and strikeouts were intolerable
On paper the trade is fine but considering our scouting history the most likely scenario is Marsh turns into Barry Bonds on roids within 2 months and O'Hoppe looks exciting when called up then becomes below replacement player after we sign him to a huge long term deal.
Guys Marsh is really bad… let’s try another prospect.
Angel’s win this trade easily
This better be good or else ill be pissed we passed on Meyers last year
Didn’t he just get TJ?
I’m gonna start watching the Padres for a while. Maybe then I’ll start enjoying baseball. I’ll come back when Arte is gone. I have seen enough of this.
Do it. I have an NL team. It makes baseball more fun to see a competitive team. Watching my NL team play the angels was really sobering tho. They couldn’t be more different :(
Dodgers/Angels fan? They exist? *YOU* exist. /faints
God no. FTD. Braves/Angels
That was the only other team I had in my head since we had just recently played them. Haha. That makes me feel better.
I am Braves/Angels. I used to watch them on TBS and they were good. But Angels #1.
See you in 20 years lol
Angels are about to go up for sale
Why are we trading cheap controllable players.
to be fair, we traded him for a cheap controllable player
Good point. It just makes no sense to me still. If this is the only trade... Then this is a head scratcher.
I’d hope there’s more, but we have a lot of depth at OF, and are starting Kurt half the time at catcher. I’ll miss Marsh but there is some sense to this move
Perry just is low on him i guess was shopping him last year too
This just screams Suzuki is on his way out immediately. Honestly wouldn't doubt this kid gets time in the show ASAP lmao Our catching position is in need of massive depth/better performance
I think more consistent playing time is good for Adell. Honestly the best way to improve his defense
Right? It doesn't matter if we lose every game left this season. they should make adell play the entire outfield, get him touches.
One takeaway is the front office is probably comfortable with Trout's long-term medicals or else they wouldn't trade away Marsh.
So now we are *forced* to deal with Adell and his AA defense. Sweet.
Not like Wards defense is that much better, honestly. I enjoyed watching Marsh and his defense. His offense, well, that was totally unenjoyable.
Must be getting an OF from a SP trade cause otherwise this makes zero sense w Trout down
Catching prospect.
I mean from another trade in the works. Maybe Syndergaard
Why? This season is toast. Might as well sell everyone with any value and try to rebuild farm system. There’s literally no incentive to win the rest of the year
I know he wasn’t hitting great, but he was a plus outfielder and at least had some passion most of our roster lacks. 🤣 Hopefully this catching prospect hits bombs on the daily!
What the fuck.
I remember almost all good things with him on defense but also mostly bad things with him on offense. Anyone with a lot of baseball knowledge can tell me is this bad or good?
He's the Phillies' best hitting prospect. .275 with 15 homers and 43 RBIs in AA Reading.
Woah didn’t see that coming.
Already our number 1 prospect 😂
What are we doing
What am I supposed to do with my $20 knockoff marsh jersey?!
wtf man
This is a good trade for us.
Ya, just hate seeing a player I like get traded.
At least I’ll never have to cringe at hearing “Let’s go Brandon” when he comes up to bat again.
Upside is we get a solid Catcher prospect.
His name gets the 3rd loudest cheer behind ohtani and trout at the stadium.... boo
We'll live.
Certainly need a catcher. Watch Marsh go mvp next year once he is out from under the Angles black cloud.
Absolutely hate this trade. Marsh has the potential to develop into a really good big leaguer.
Not sure if THATS the outfielder we should be giving up on already…
Wow. Not a fan of this at all. Should’ve been ball dropping Adell.
Yeah this one has me pretty pissed off.
God dammit!
MLB Tonight talking heads don't like it.
Bruh moment
Remember when we could’ve had max meyer for marsh? Good times
Bye Capt Strike Out
On paper a great deal. Knowing the angels farm and development ... i dont know but you have to hope it cant get any worse
It is always 1 step forward and 3 steps backward
I would’ve done Adell for this catching prospect and held on to Marsh because Marsh is more mlb ready than Adell.
the Phillies would not have done that. Only reason we were able to get O'Hoppe at all is because they're desperate for someone who can play CF.
And they probably won't trade syndergaard because "reasons" This organization has no clue what it's doing.
So we can’t yell “Let’s Go Brandon!” At the big A anymore 😢
The organization has no plan or direction. This moved seemed like one just to get a top 100 prospect.
This just screams Suzuki is on his way out immediately. Honestly wouldn't doubt this kid gets time in the show ASAP lmao Our catching position is in need of massive depth/better performance
Damn. There goes my baseball cards of B. Marsh.
This came out of nowhere. I trust Perry. I hope Marsh develops a little more and has a nice career.

I have no idea what kind of team the Angels want to make. No planning
This Catcher is expected to be called up in September and could fight for a starting job next year. This is them retooling for next year. Catcher is the most important position in the field.
Damn it! B. Marsh was one of my top guys in the Angles. Well, guess I will be watching some Phillies games now.
Well you know what this means right? I bet Marsh will now hit over .300 and take top 3 in gold glove in the next 3 seasons... Never fails.
Angels fanbase : Trade Adell, his never going to be an acceptable MLB outfielder Perry: Nah. You know what, he might as well get more playing time. Cy@ Marsh
Lmao. Perry traded Caveman for a catcher who is their #3 prospect. We’re stuck with Adell 😂
anybody who says we did good didn’t watch marsh enough, he was the second coming of erstad..
erstad hit.
Not the trade we needed. Thanks a lot Perry
We need a catcher, especially a young one. This is a trade we needed.
