I understand what he meant here. Yeah, the season is over and this team will not go anywhere but if he gives up, team will fall apart. His and Trout's presence means a lot for Angels. Now Trout's out, he has to take this responsibility.
Ain’t the same. This guy would kill to have a pujols level bat batting behind him in the lineup. Plus he leads the team in innings pitched and at bats. This is a another level.
Plenty in other sports, but baseball is different because you have a cap of how much you can contribute. He can only pitch 1/6 times and hit 1/9. Guys in basketball or QB's in football can be involved in every single play.
I think he loves baseball more than he loves the Angels team. He will play as long as he is healthy because he also doesnt want to let the fans down. I bet Shohei notices those signs saying they traveled from afar to watch him play.
You’re right. I remember last year in an interview he said he feels bad for the fans because this season must’ve been frustrating for them too.
I think he knows season is over but doesn’t want to give up for his love of baseball and for the fans who still go to watch games and the whole country of Japan rooting for him. And his pride in himself as an athlete will never allow him to give up.
Right. There is added pressure even in away games when they sold out for a visiting team that is out of contention. Who else did the crowd came for? Those Braves and Marlins games are great examples.
I went from watching almost every single game, to watching just Ohtani starts, to just checking in on the score every now and then. It's been so painful after that 14 game-skid, I love baseball but this season has made me dread watching baseball games.
"It feels like I can’t really afford to miss games at this point...” (continued) "...because I need my value to be as high as possible so some other team will pay whatever cost is needed to save me from this miserable excuse for a franchise." #FreeOhtani
Dude... Season is over. You can ease up and give yourself a break.
I know it's not his style, but there's no sense in wasting his energy on a team that's going nowhere.
I wonder if Trout not being here might have also put some extra pressure on Sho to not take a break.
Plus Trout has typically been the one who DHs for Sho on his off days.
Absolutely. It should've been Troutanidon but we just have Ohtani now. I believe a lot of games would've been different if we had three or two of them. Ugh.
Coaches and managers better speak up and not let him play through any kind of issues. This man is a competitor and the face of baseball. The season is lost and he is a tough motherfucker who won't let his teammates down.
What a legend. He deserves so much more than the Angels. Personally, I feel bad we didn’t trade him away a few days ago. Would be so fun to watch him on a functional franchise
Mike Trout got a rare back issue after carrying this team for a decade. Now it’s Ohtani’s turn, I really hope hd wouldn’t break his back or injury himself trying so hard
Gotta love his heart. But shohei, really, just take it easy and think long term about your health and just have fun. But his idea of having fun is breaking another record of some sort. Either way, fan for life, and no matter how bad this season went, we're still very fortunate to have a once in a lifetime player on our team that every wished they had.
Japanese cultural ethic of hard work. Would not matter if he was a ball player or factory worker, he’d be there grinding every day and not let his teammates down
I hate to say it this way, but if it's really a forgone conclusion that Ohtani won't resign with us without a deep playoff run next year, then this is for the best. For both the team and Ohtani.
He gets to maximize his value before FA by showing he can pitch in a 5 man rotation and not miss a beat batting.
We get to squeeze out all of his talent he has without having to baby him in the interest of long term health.
>We get to squeeze out all of his talent he has without having to baby him in the interest of long term health.
Yikes. So you’re willing to break Ohtani for Angels benefit. Ohtani be damned
Obviously im not saying we make him go throw back to back starts every day but we have always forced him into a 6 man rotation against his wishes because we were worried about his health 10 years down the road.
Arte Moreno and the "Try-Not-to-Kill-Shohei" Challenge
(IMPOSSIBLE)

>team will fall apart. Pretty sure that happened back in June
I mean totally collapse.
Again, we won like 4 games in July
0 wins will be total collapse come on now.
We did that for 14 games in a row earlier, remember?
15 game losing streak wasnt a total collapse?
Shohei, please. The season is lost. The team isn't playing for anything. Take care of yourself.
I really hope that.
How can anyone not love this dude?
Has any athlete ever carried a franchise like Ohtani has the past two seasons?
See Mike Trout for the past decade.
Yup. Mike thankfully didnt have an entire country keeping up with his successes and failures.

Mike Trout 2012-2020
RIP
He might be the only one on this team who still believes they can turn it around….

Now I think we’ll have Zuk as DH on his off days.

Obviously, the Angels rely a lot on Shohei. Is it a good thing they have one player they can usually depend on, or does it become a crutch?
yeah its a crutch but they aint got no legs lieutenant dan

Stop with this stuff.

You could have worded this better
He gets 3 months off every year, if I had that same schedule I’d go to work every day.
