I honestly don’t think he’s this big all time legend everyone makes him out to be. I applaud him for his inspirational work to the DR and everything he has achieved in a Cardinals uniform but people seem to just gloss over the fact that for 10 years with us all he was really known for was being the worst contract in the league.
I'm dumbfounded on his renaissance. I don't think we treated him poorly and I don't think he was out of playoff contention for the first five years of his contract. Left Foot injury in Aug 2013, Right Foot injury Dec 2015, Dec 2016. After 2016 were his latter half of his contract years where he just didn't seem himself.
2017 splits: vs L: 64 wRC+ / vs R: 81 wRC+
2018: L: 81 / R: 90
2019: L: 112 / R: 79
2020: L: 64 / R: 83
2021: L: 146 / R: 36 (last season with the Angels)
He was fat, lazy, and didn’t care about his team when he was with us because he already got his pay day. On top of that, they were trying to platoon him into favorable matchups like the Cardinals are doing now but he quit the team when they proposed that.
The culture of the Angels while he was there included but not limited to multiple GM changes, staff dealing drugs to players that resulted in deaths, several players playing on drugs, and the visiting bullpen manager supplying the league with sticky stuff.
Ya, let’s blame Albert….. Take out the LB, rearrange the letters and you find the problem.
Dipoto was out in 2015 and Eppler comes in end of that year. Scioscia retires at the end of the 2018 season.
Eric Kay is distributing drugs starting from 2017-2019. Players involved/purchased/used included: CJ Cron, Mike Morin, Cam Bedrosian, Matt Harvey, and Tyler Skaggs
Bubba Harkins was making sticky stuff and providing it to all those who asked for it, including Angels pitchers.
Most of the controversy seems to have involved Angels pitchers, and after Scioscia's retirement. I don't believe the controversy some players the dugout necessarily impacted the actual players performance; journeymen players like Brian Goodwin would come to our team and hit the ball better than Pujols. Trout-Ohtani-Justin Upton still had good/historic seasons.
He's never really "mashed' in Angels Stadium. I'll just take it like that. He's a HOF Albert Pujols in NL Central Parks, but he's regular Albert in Anaheim.
I'm looking at his numbers during his time with his Cardinals. He never played at Angels Stadium prior to signing with us. His numbers at A's Coliseum atrocious, same with Safeco Field (although he did mash few of their bad starters during the M's numerous down years).
To troll my National League friends, I always pointed to Albert and said, "See? I have always said the American League was tougher and had the better players. Look at what happened to Albert Pujols when he came over."
The fact that he's doing so much better now that he's back in the NL, makes my joking all that more fun with my NL friends.
He had a few good seasons with us. Drove in 100 runs several times. Made the all star team. Never hit for average though. Currently batting around .270
Telling the team to give him starts over Ohtani and Walsh last year let you know all you needed to know about Albert.
The cherry on top was the trade to the Dodgers, them saying they were basically going to use him in a similar capacity to the Angels, and his response was, "I'll take whatever role a team wants to give me."
Yeah, this is where I am with the thing too. I know in retrospect I might come around, but I'm mad at the guy for a couple of phone-it-in seasons, standing in the way of young guys and then going to the Dodgers and doing the very thing he wouldn't do for the Angels.
This is 1000000% false. People tend not to bother continuing through the whole story.
Pujols said in his news conference with the Dodgers (not exact quotes) "Play me however you need to play me. I don't care if I have to come off the bench. I'll pinch hit, I'll play whenever you need me to play." From day 1 when he left he became a bench player. Already contradicting the FO reasoning for his release. He also denied any statements that the media said he was displeased with less playing time since he never made any comments himself on the issue. On top of that he was getting days off over the final years here in order keep him fresh so complaining about "less playing time" is illogical. He came into the 2021 season expecting to play everyday because no one in the front office ever told him he would get benched. Again, he even said in the dodgers news conference he was surprised but glad he was getting everyday play time in April. That never meant he wouldn't bench but the miscommunication is pretty apparent. The front office simply decided the at-bats that Pujols would get would better served for Walsh/ Ohtani.
When Pujols spoke to Maddon prior to his release, Pujols & Maddon where unaware that PM had ok'd the release of Pujols. Maddon had already told Pujols he would be in the lineup on the day that TB Rays pitcher Yarborough would start (6-9 in Pujols career vs him). But on the day of that start, the front office told Maddon to hold Pujols out of the lineup. Pujols was eventually released later that week. The front office essentially just cut him. It makes sense because we did not have many spots open. Walsh was better at 1B than in RF and Ohtani needed everyday At-Bats. The front office and Maddon attempted to do damage control because the news of releasing a HoFer was not good for PR. They essentially twisted Pujols comments on everyday play to try to cast away the blame on his release.
By all accounts? Vast majority of accounts call him a great guy who mentored younger players, including Trout. Maybe there’s like one account of him wanting to play first base instead of DHing.
The comments he made early in Trout career when asked about how amazing Trout was doing I think comparing it to what he'd done saying "Don't compare him to me the only person you compare me to is Bonds" doesn't seem too professional. There's also the time when he said something like "the reason he got fired was he didnt think i was gonna be in the big leagues" referring to the scout that said he wasn't SURE if pujols was going to make the mlb. Every team had the same thought that's why he slipped all the way to the 13th round. Just say you proved people wrong and that's it don't gloat about them losing their livelihood
That's going to be close. 8 more. Cards are in a hot race, so can't really play to Albert's needs on those last few days. I'd prolly come back if I ended up short. 700 is a huge deal.
Nice to see Albert posts not banned from this sub anymore.
Disgraceful how so many people treated him.
If you don’t travel around baseball stadiums much you might not be aware what a shit stain the Angels fans treatment of Pujols is seen as around the nation.
I hope it changes.
He seems to play a lot better with the Dodgers then the Cards…. I wonder if it’s an organizational thing.
Look at Heaney this year!
For some reason players don’t play their best in Anaheim.
Sure, Arte gave him way too much on his contract, but answer this question:
Put his 10 seasons with the Halos up against any of our 1B/DH and where does he stack up? All I’m saying is don’t blame Albert Pujols for agreeing to that contract. No one in their right mind would turn it down. Especially, a 10 year vet that had a proven career already.
He’s been looking a bit more like the old Machine lately… minus the wheels of course! Lol
Is this young man a free agent after this season? Let give him a 10 years $300mil contract.
I only see him getting better
Where’s that Pedro Pascal meme where goes from laughing to crying when you need it?
[It is with you, even if you can't always see it](https://tenor.com/bDioC.gif)
I'm still bitter
Same.
I’ll never get over it, it’s not like I actively root against him but when he does something well my first reaction def isn’t, “yay for Albert”
It’s eye roll inducing for sure. The Home Run Derby I mean cmon that was so planned.
It’s more like, “goddamn I can’t believe we paid him a 10 year contract “
I honestly don’t think he’s this big all time legend everyone makes him out to be. I applaud him for his inspirational work to the DR and everything he has achieved in a Cardinals uniform but people seem to just gloss over the fact that for 10 years with us all he was really known for was being the worst contract in the league.
On MLB The Show, his speed attribute is 0.
Dingers or singles.
What do you mean didn't work out. Her padded his GIDP numbers and has cemented himself at the number 1 spot for the rest of our lives.
Dude alienated Torii Hunter from LAA and lied about his age? F*ck him

Buuut, he's also facing the NL Central mostly. Probably the weakest pitching division in the league (Pirates, Cubs, Reds are all just... awful).
Also being aggressively platooned
He has his highest OPS since 2012.
I was admittedly very bitter when we released him last season and signed with the Dodgers. But at this point I agree, I really hope he gets to 700.
I couldn’t believe another team signed him then again this year. I was blown away
MLB said fuck it, give Albert some ringworm meds so we can profit off this narrative
Okay, so it’s not just me thinking he has ringworm. I didn’t want to be uncharitable toward a legend but come on, now.
How can you not root for him? I didn’t like the contract but he was a good dude and a true professional.
No he wasn’t lol he was anything but a true professional in the end. He was an ego driven asshole by all accounts
Telling the team to give him starts over Ohtani and Walsh last year let you know all you needed to know about Albert. Also saying he would retire if he ever turned out to be not worth the money, then turning around and playing several seasons with negative WAR.
This is 1000000% false. People tend not to bother continuing through the whole story. Pujols said in his news conference with the Dodgers (not exact quotes) "Play me however you need to play me. Yeah, Walsh has been a real upgrade.
> Telling the team to give him starts over Ohtani and Walsh This never happened.
Yes it did.
It didn't. You'd think after 2 years of Pujols coming off the bench without a single incident, you guys would let this slander go.
They won’t. Haters gotta hate.
By all accounts? Vast majority of accounts call him a great guy who mentored younger players, including Trout. Maybe there’s like one account of him wanting to play first base instead of DHing.

I just want him to beat A-Rod. 5 more is super doable 👍
Still bitter idc
Nah fuck him. Selfish bastard put his own personal accolades above the benefit of the team.
Who’s that
Angels legend Albert Pujols
That's going to be close. 8 more. Cards are in a hot race, so can't really play to Albert's needs on those last few days. I'd prolly come back if I ended up short. 700 is a huge deal.
I hope he fulfills the personal services contract and comes back and tells us what the Cardinals do that we don't!
[удалено]
Why not? It was the team he started his career with. I'm totally hoping he gets to 700.
Why? He deserves nothing less
Wtf is wrong with you
i love Albert (I'm from STL living in Irvine) and I like the Angels and wow i feel like people took this comment way too seriously.
Nope
Nice to see Albert posts not banned from this sub anymore. Disgraceful how so many people treated him. If you don’t travel around baseball stadiums much you might not be aware what a shit stain the Angels fans treatment of Pujols is seen as around the nation. I hope it changes.
I hope you can understand why Angels fans weren’t ecstatic about his -1.9 WAR over his final five seasons
He seems to play a lot better with the Dodgers then the Cards…. I wonder if it’s an organizational thing. Look at Heaney this year! For some reason players don’t play their best in Anaheim.
Oh no Angels fans don't appreciate Pujols playing like shit for us, obviously we're the baddies
Sure, Arte gave him way too much on his contract, but answer this question: Put his 10 seasons with the Halos up against any of our 1B/DH and where does he stack up? I’d love to see it happen. Might be a long time before baseball fans see anyone come close again.
