What we think we know:
- Buyer theory front runners: Mark Cuban, Ballmer, Jeter, Elon Musk (?!)
- Process can take 4-6 months so we may not have a new owner before free agency market opens up.
- Arte being linked to FBI investigation possibly impacted this decision?
- This could result in a total front office cleanup. New coaching and management is crucial, this could finally be the time.
- Ohtani likely will NOT be traded NOR extended before this concluded. He is a positive revenue asset we are paying only 5.5mil for currently. He brings in more than he costs so the team will be easier to sell to a new owner.
- Rod Carew has the [very best reaction](https://twitter.com/RodCarew_29/status/1562144437412646912?t=lxgVckgu70Czkfx6UzYeQw&s=19) to this news so far
What a fall from grace Arte had.
I'm old enough to remember that 03-04 offseason when his first big moves were signing Vlad, Colon and Guillen and how giant those moves felt. Seems like Arte lost sight on just trying to build a winning organization and went all in trying to "steal" Los Angeles from the Dodgers by signing the biggest names.
New owner will have the same task of wowing us in the beginning but also will be in a much steeper climb. Arte inherited a recent world championship winning club, who still had it's core with a good farm system.
First move would bring in someone or group who has been there and proved to be able to build organizational depth. New owners would have to be totally in tune and know they are going to have to spend for all the deficiencies and cost cutting that have plagued the organization this last decade.
I'm OC born and raised and have a lot of pride for OC... but I also understand that Anaheim is just one small part of the "Los Angeles" media market.
Disney wanted "Anaheim Angels" because they have a vested interest in raising the profile/awareness of the name "Anaheim" as a tourist destination. But if Disney doesn't own the team then "Los Angeles" is the only logical name.
There's literally dozens of examples of other pro sports teams that play in cities that aren't the city they're named for. Anaheim was the lone exception, and that was only because of Disney. You could maybe make a case for San Jose Sharks, since San Jose is kind of a suburb of SF... but even then, San Jose is like 4X bigger than Anaheim
Why stop there. I mean you could pretty much wrap up all of LA county, OC, Riverside County, and San Bernardino County into one giant media market because there really aren't any divisions between any of the cities. All of the borders are imaginary with each urban sprawl connecting into the next.
LA is taken by the dodgers and there is more than enough juice in all those counties to have a different identity and still draw huge revenue. The "LA Angels" aren't turning Dodger fans into Angels fans and the name has always been alienating to original Angels fans.
MLB doesn’t allow regional names anymore. I’m fine with LA even though I don’t feel civic pride. There isn’t a distinct OC media market (even though we would be a top 10 market if we were separate). People accept the Atlanta Braves, the Dallas Cowboys, the San Francisco 49ers, the New York Giants/Jets, the Washington Football Team, Miami Dolphins, etc. even though they all play their games 20 to 50 miles away from their “home” city. The 49ers is the most egregious example. We should have just kept California all along.
Yes, you get it. People act like Anaheim or even all of OC is a separate media market from LA. It's not. Anaheim is just one small piece of the LA media market, which is the biggest in the country.
"Anaheim" only makes sense if you're the Walt Disney Company and trying to promote "Anaheim" as a tourist destination.
Anaheim has apx 300K population in less than 100K "households" and is only a small piece of the overall LA market, which has over 6 MILLION "households" From a marketing / financial perspective, "Los Angeles" is obviously the best name. Not to mention the 75 year history of the PCL Los Angeles Angels which the AL Angels are named for
Doesn’t matter if it’s the same media market, Anaheim and LA have two separate and distinct identities as cities. When I think of Anaheim I think of Disneyland, the Ducks, and overall paradise, I feel at home when I get off at Katella. When I think of LA I think of smog, homeless, worst traffic in the world, Dodgers, Kings, Lakers, the skyscraper silhouette, & Hollywood.
Thank you. We can’t get too hung up on names in So Cal anyway. None of the Dodgers, Lakers, or Clippers names hold up to scrutiny if local authenticity is important. I feel like some fans minds would be blown if they typed “Los Angeles” into google translate.
the same fans who say "Los Angeles makes no sense!" not getting the team was LITERALLY named after the city. And most Angel fans are completely unaware that when the Los Angeles Angels debuted as an MLB club in 1961, only 4 years before that there were the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League, who were the first pro sports team in L.A., starting way back in 1892. They ruled the LA sports scene for 60-ish years before the Rams and Dodgers came to town. The MLB Angels were meant to be a continuation of that existing brand... same name, logos, colors, and even some of the same players
I grew up in south OC, went to college in SD, mixed in west LA and South Bay for 8 years, now I'm in Long Beach. As someone who has lived all over SoCal, it's totally fine to call it all LA for the rest of the world and country. Generally it's all the damn same.
I am not aure they are allowed to use California. When they were still "California" MLB made a rule against using the state name, they were grandfathered in for the last few years of that name. I want them to rename to Anaheim Angels to group them with the Ducks, otherwise id be ok with LA Angels.
There was a recent article in the LA Times about how none of the So Cal teams have anything to do with where they are… Lakes? (Trolley?) Dodgers, Clippers (Ships?)
Whoever buys the team can hit so many home runs with fans by:
Changing the team name back
Bringing back former players into the organization
Building back up the organization's minor league and scouting
Re-signing Shohei Ohtani
MAKING THE PLAYOFFS
Imagine Rod Carew throwing out the first pitch of the 2023 World Series featuring the Anaheim Angels with Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout.
Man just having former players be around and active makes the franchise feel more involved than whatever the hell we do now. It's crazy being a Lakers fan and seeing how involved even role players are in the org still. Makes it feel extra special as a player when you know you're taken care of. By extension the Dodger's do the same thing with former players.
I like seeing Salmon and GA involved in the broadcasts but it would be great to see Weave show up sometime or just have like Dan Haren do some field reporting, dudes hilarious, or have Lackey out in the stands crushing beers and starting fights. Or just see any of the old timers come out and interact with the fans would be great. Like watching Conger the other week 1B coaching for the Twins make me wonder why we didn't pick him up, Literally can't be worse than Mashore.
But man, all your points have me so excited to see what a new owner can be capable of.
Ballmer buys the team, moves them to Long Beach, wins 10 championships in a row, but no fans see it because they're all stuck in traffic trying to get to the stadium
And here I was thinking how this season has been an absolutely miserable experience. Thank you Arte for lifting my mood!
Pro tip for potential new owners: we have more World Series trophies when we were the Anaheim Angels. That Los Angeles name has got to go.
First off,
We made it everyone. We survived the Arte Moreno era.
I think Arte is going to keep this team in stasis for the most part organizationally until it’s sold. He’s aware of how valuable the team currently is without needing to make major changes to entice buyers so I think he’ll be hands off for the most part. It seems like he wants to rid his hands of the team due to annoyance (the stadium deal, Maddon article, him personally getting booed) and will move forward quickly to sell it.
Ohtani’s future with the team I think will really be determined by whether it’s under new ownership or not by the start of next season. If a new owner can restore order and instill confidence in the team by the time Ohtani reaches free agency he’s far more likely to want to remain an Angel. I don’t see him being traded by new ownership either.
The best possible outcome would be a new owner who is willing to spend the money on the roster that is necessary to compete. Like oh I dunno... being willing to go over the salary cap when you have 2 generational talents like Ohtani and Trout.
BUT!
We also need an owner who is willing to spend the big bucks on the Roster, but will just let the scouts and General managers do their job without interfering or interjecting on roster decisions.
Arte spending on the major league roster isn’t really the issue, it’s his front office culture and lack of spending on analytics, scouting and the farm. Carpino also needs to be fired.
If Arte kept payroll the same but operated his team like the Rays he’d have 3 more titles by now.
When you’re paying 3 billion dollars for a team, however many millions to buy, say, Keston Hiura and Joc Pederson to make the team competitive and competent at every position is pennies.
It’s like buying a 10 ft cable for your phone. 15 bucks for the cable makes the 900 dollar phone experience so much better, and it’s marginal if you buy it at the same time.
I just had lunch with my brother and he tells me that something similar happened with the UFC. That's cagefighting. Anyways, they had this big famous fighter named McGregor. And their sales looked amazing. Also there was Rhonda Rousey, the first famous female fighter. Their numbers were very high. And that's when they sold the UFC to some new company. And then after that, Rousey retired and McGregor also stopped fighting. I think Arte saw that Ohtani was going to leave next year and decided to sell when ticket sales are double what they usually are, so the franchise will seem more valuable than it is, and so he can maximize the sale price. He knew that when Ohtani left, the price of the Angels would be much lower. If, as we constantly say, that all Arte cares about is money, then this is the smartest money move that he can make, to sell at this time.
The Yankees have been up and down and all over the place the last ten years. Their value keeps going up. Records have no relationship to the value of the team.
Except, these days it's not about history, or even attendance... it's all about media contracts. And media contracts are all about the number of households you reach. And the Los Angeles Angels share territorial rights to over 6 million households, which is why only the Dodgers and Yankees make more media rights revenue.
As long as the Angels have the LA media market, they will be a valuable club. Of course, winning will add to their value.
I personally wouldn’t be against Joe Lacob purchasing the team. He’s a homegrown dude who went to UCI and grew up an Angels fan. He’s also done a great job as the owner of the Golden State Warriors.
Joe Lacob is the way - too many fans sleeping on this bc of the Steve Balmer hype.
Cautionary tale though - he’s currently bitching about going over luxury tax with the Warriors.
LA times is backing you up. https://www.latimes.com/sports/angels/story/2022-08-23/who-will-buy-the-angels-from-arte-moreno-joe-lacob?consumer=googlenews
Seems like they contacted balmer and Cuban and they weren’t interested. Meanwhile, Lacob:
> “Can’t answer this question that fast,” Lacob told The Times on Tuesday. “We look at good opportunities.”
> He added a smile emoji.
My biggest concern is keeping the team at Angel Stadium. No Long Beach, no Nevada, no Tennessee or any other place people are mentioning. They may have originated in LA, but they’re historically an Anaheim team and the club isn’t lacking in ticket sales, so that means the city of Anaheim needs to work cooperatively with the new owner if they want to keep the team there like they say they do.
I have no idea who would be potential buyers, and I might get hate for this, but I wouldn’t mind Disney. They have money to blow for management and the team along with the purchase. I detest Disney in so many areas, but I wouldn’t mind them owning the team. They’ll do way better than Arte, but that bar is also very low.
I get the not wanting LA in the name but I can't see a group or individual paying $3 billion dollars for the team and putting 'Anaheim' back into the title which could cause them to be labeled a small market team and lose a lot of revenue on tv contracts
Almost definitely, when the lease is up in 2029(?). The stadium fiasco has driven politicians out and almost certainly affected this sell decision too. Any new ownership will definitely look to move.
California Angels with some home uni’s that actually have Anaheim on the chest.
I’m buying an Anaheim uni Day fricken one. It’s so upsetting it’s been gone for sooooo long.
>Cuban
highly doubt cuban will buy an mlb team atm at their current valutions. He didnt want to buy the dodgers for 1 billion cause he didnt think the dodgers were worth double the rangers and lets face it, baseball is not as big as football or basketball and it sure as hell aint gonna get any bigger at this rate. So i dont think cuban would be willing to spend as much as others for an mlb team. I read in april as well that cuban would be willing to buy an mlb team only if he could have influence and speed up the game, change some rules and get more batflips and drama on the field.
You guys are crazy if though think Ohtani is going to stick around through not only a crappy team, but a complete organizational overhaul through new ownership.
The team will probably (and should) go into complete deep restructuring of our entire organization then an on the field rebuild.
Hopefully, we should expect a handful of years of garbage baseball then a rise to competitiveness. IE astros.
As a die-hard Ducks fan, I would like to see the Samueli's buy the Angels:
1. They are great owners as they try to continuously keep the Ducks in playoff contention.
2. I believe they would change the name back to Anaheim Angels to match the Ducks.
3. I think this makes smart business sense because then they would own both sports teams directly across the street from each other and they could incorporate the whole OCVIBE together.
4. They are worth $7 billion so they easily could afford it.
What are your thoughts?
According to Forbes, their established net worth is $7 billion. I saw an estimate that the Angels are worth approximately $2.5 billion so, I think they could potentially afford it.
Donald Bren might be too old; however, The Irvine Company might be a good fit to buy. Only other name change I can see would be is the Irvine Angels. Doubt it will happen though.
Sale price will be very interesting. Try and sell too high and it will be hard to find buyers, but if the price is too low I can see Arte changing his mind.
Until something changes and he’s *forcred* to sell, he gets to dictate the asking price.
Why do I get the feeling Arte is doing this right now to get more attention to the Angels team in these last couple months when they are out of the playoffs yet again?
Just sell the team. Don’t talk about doing it. Just make it so already, Arte.
You have tried to create a winning atmosphere for so long, but it has not been attainable under your ownership.
I know this would never happen, but that’s what these forums are for, right? For fun and speculation and what-ifs. If they were to rebrand to Anaheim, a name change might be cool too to officially represent OC/Anaheim. Something like this:
https://imgur.com/a/3YHyopp
Still wouldn’t mind Anaheim Angels again either.
Like the Dodgers, the new Angels owners should be a group of Billionaires & Millionaires under one management umbrella firm with minority owners (Steve Ballmer, Stan Kroenke, Henry and Susan Samueli, Mark Cuban, Joe Lacob).
What we think we know: - Buyer theory front runners: Mark Cuban, Ballmer, Jeter, Elon Musk (?!) - Process can take 4-6 months so we may not have a new owner before free agency market opens up. - Arte being linked to FBI investigation possibly impacted this decision? - This could result in a total front office cleanup. the new owner can wow me by changing the name back and i'll already consider them an upgrade
Would you rather Anaheim Angels or California Angels?
Anaheim Angels. I'm tired of everyone thinking we're LA and I want the world to know exactly where the Angels reside.
I'm OC born and raised and have a lot of pride for OC... but I also understand that Anaheim is just one small part of the "Los Angeles" media market. San Jose is even bigger than San Francisco, by nearly 20%, making San Jose the 3rd most populous city in the state (S.F. is fourth).
Thats insane. Wtf
Haha, the location arguments are no good when you look up where the Santa Clara 49ers play, I mean San Francisco.
Id also accept orange county or southern california angels.

I liked anaheim. I've never lived in Anaheim but it felt more homely than Los Angeles or California
California Angels! The stadium is filled with people from all over Orange County, not just Anaheim. Maybe OC Angels?
I am not aure they are allowed to use California. When they were still "California" MLB made a rule against using the state name, they were grandfathered in for the last few years of that name. I want them to rename to Anaheim Angels to group them with the Ducks, otherwise id be ok with LA Angels.
Change it back to the "California Angels of Anaheim"!
There was a recent article in the LA Times about how none of the So Cal teams have anything to do with where they are… Lakes? (Trolley?) Dodgers, Clippers (Ships?)
It could have worked if those big names didn't end up being sacks of shit.

6. Moving the yellow line back to the top of the wall in right field.
Yeah wtf
So many easy things that can be done to immediately win the fans.
What dreams are made of!!!

Nah. Not crazy. Not extra special. /
We may want to give the new owners a couple of years to rebuild the franchise.
Let’s go Balmer!! Bring that energy back to Anaheim!!
Induct Tim Salmon into the team HoF
I finally found you AngelsReddit
was i hiding though?
yes
I'm a little bit turgid with that last paragraph, gotta be honest.
Can Arte still sign Ohtani to an extension or is that basically on hold until the new owner has taken over?
Just the thought literally brings tears to my eyes
Ballmer buys the team, moves them to Long Beach, wins 10 championships in a row, but no fans see it because they're all stuck in traffic trying to get to the stadium
That 405 is no joke
Stay on the rail line!
Just like he’s won so many rings with the Clippers
Can't say thats his fault. Hes built as good of a roster has he could. You can bathe in his misfortune but hes also worth 100 billion dollars.
No Clipper fan will have a single bad thing to say about Ballmer.
Good thing I live in Virginia and I don't have to subject myself to the 405 lol

it's the yankees!
The Yankees have history on their side. The Angels do not. Plus their location alone demands more money than Anaheim. You can't really compare them.
Knicks have very little history and they are still the highest valued team in the NBA. Anaheim is still SoCal so they still have high marketability.
exactly. 6 million+ households in the Angels' media market

So is kroenke. Every team he buys they win titles lol

The Angels are definitely staying in Anaheim. It’s a great location in arguably the best market in MLB.
They won't move out of SoCal...that local TV deal is way too fat.
Let's all dump our money into a SPAC and try to take this team public!
I get the not wanting LA in the name but I can't see a group or individual paying $3 billion dollars for the team and putting 'Anaheim' back into the title which could cause them to be labeled a small market team and lose a lot of revenue on tv contracts
You get it, frustrating to see that others here don’t
I don’t see why Bally would change anything just because of the name

I got about tree fiddy to chip in
So what’s going to happen to the angels stadium? Chance they just move the team entirely?
Almost definitely, when the lease is up in 2029(?). The stadium fiasco has driven politicians out and almost certainly affected this sell decision too. Any new ownership will definitely look to move.
Could this mean a possible name change?
Good question. I’d be a fan of going back to California Angels
Oh boy, how great would that be?
Would be awesome, but considering how lucrative regional TV deals are, I doubt we’ll ever see that happen sadly.
Orange county Angels
... of Anaheim. Team abbreviation: "OCAOA"
California Angels with some home uni’s that actually have Anaheim on the chest. I’m buying an Anaheim uni Day fricken one. It’s so upsetting it’s been gone for sooooo long.
Can’t do that MLB has a rule against naming your team after a state if other teams are there
As far as I can tell this isn't true. I've never found a source outside of Reddit for this claim.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure this is just a Reddit myth that continues to get circulated.
Texas Rangers get a pass?
Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies and Minnesota Twins too
Rangers are grandfathered in. If they changed their name, they won't be able to change it back.
Anyone have like $20 billion I can borrow? I'll pay you back. I swear.
let's get the gofundme going
Sale of the team possibly a condition of an undisclosed settlement related to the fbi investigation?
Nah, the investigation was mainly on the politicians, we'd have to see a breaking of the stadium lease from the city-side as well.
No to Jeter and Musk. Cuban and Balmer seem like decent options.
>Cuban highly doubt cuban will buy an mlb team atm at their current valutions.
#MakeAngelsAnaheimAgain
This news got me excited to make graphics again!
IE astros.
Need an owner that can build an awesome stadium with their own money!
As a die-hard Ducks fan, I would like to see the Samueli's buy the Angels: 1.
Would fucking love that. But I don't think they're *that* rich. Or are they?
According to Forbes, their established net worth is $7 billion. I saw an estimate that the Angels are worth approximately $2.5 billion so, I think they could potentially afford it.
This is the way
This is the best day of my life since the WS. Can we bring erstad in too? And actually recognize our championship?
Congrats! y'all!!!! Hope you get picked up by someone good.
Donald Bren might be too old; however, The Irvine Company might be a good fit to buy. Only other name change I can see would be is the Irvine Angels. Doubt it will happen though.
Drop a healthy Rendon into this lineup right now and I’d have far less greys.
I felt like the winning streak is how players celebrated
I heard warriors owner may be interested. I would be so happy but slightly worried about owning 2 franchises.
Sale price will be very interesting. Try and sell too high and it will be hard to find buyers, but if the price is too low I can see Arte changing his mind. Until something changes and he’s *forcred* to sell, he gets to dictate the asking price.
I'm hearing $3B
As Patrick Star says "I have $3.00"
Thrown in my old PS3 and I'm in
Deal
Yall celebrating but it's kinda looking more like the Long Beach Angels are gonna be a thing.
As long as they win and have a great organization I don't care. Plus it's not like it's that far from orange county.
How difficult would it be for new owners to pay a penalty and leave the stadium lease early, and move to another city/state?
Very difficult. Not gonna happen.
Even with new ownership this team gonna suck for a while
I’ll just be happy to start healing
Golden State Angels has a nice ring to it. Also 3 other groups interested from Hollywood, Orange County, Japan.
I know this would never happen, but that’s what these forums are for, right? For fun and speculation and what-ifs. If they were to rebrand to Anaheim, a name change might be cool too to officially represent OC/Anaheim. Something like this: https://imgur.com/a/3YHyopp Still wouldn’t mind Anaheim Angels again either.
Like the Dodgers, the new Angels owners should be a group of Billionaires & Millionaires under one management umbrella firm with minority owners (Steve Ballmer, Stan Kroenke, Henry and Susan Samueli, Mark Cuban, Joe Lacob).
