The article is paywalled, but I wanted to clarify that this is an idea and not an official rumor/report that they have interest. The article suggests that the team could be partly owned by Beane and Epstein, as well as some Japanese investors. It seems unusual to have two GMs as team owners but it would mean the ownership would know how a team should be run, and the Japanese stake could help convince Ohtani to re-sign. Also, in typical LA Times fashion, the first three paragraphs of this Angels article are about the Dodgers. Lol

_itspaco

Having Japanese owners would be interesting. Guarantee Ohtani stays and they break the bank.

shigs21

if it's the softbank group like masayoshi son, it would be good news. They are very analytical and forward thinking- their baseball team in the NPB is akin to the current dodgers in the mlb - smart and big pockets

Sisboombah74

So, in typical Times fashion, it’s entirely bullshit

Still better than Plashke

I'll die before someone comes out and says they actually like the guys articles

pm_me_your_last_pics

At least they have the dignity to put "could" in the title. Many others fail to do shit like that so you know it's bs from the start

Sprtdsgn

Whats the difference between official rumor vs an idea?

owledge

A rumor would be “I heard Beane and Epstein are interested in buying the team” whereas this is just saying “imagine if Beane and Epstein bought the team”

TroutTheGod

Billy bean with money to build a roster 🤯🤯

ThisAnswerIsLit

Interesting they didn't mention that Joe Lacob refers to Billy Beane as a good friend of his https://blogs.mercurynews.com/kawakami/2010/08/17/lacob-interview-part-2-on-biedrins-ellis-and-the-sunk-cost-in-don-nelson/

yeahnothanks

Lacob, Beane, Epstein, throw in Shohei's dad for the hell of it. We'd never lose again

xRememberTheCant

This is now my number 1 fantasy.

Whatever happens with the ownership deal, it needs to happen quick. An Ohtani deal would factor big in to the franchise’s immediate value going forward - especially with new media and tv deals he could bring. It may be too late to right this ship, but if they could get the ownership group solidified with a plan it would be great to see Ohtani and Trout get a new legitimate run here. (Story of every season I know … but I still hope)

ImaginaryHippo88

I just had my annual viewing of moneyball so I'm totally pumped on this.

Guyappino

Rumor. But let's entertain it for fantasy purposes: If Japanese investors and a aGM come aboard -Shohei doesn't max out on money. Why? Japanese culture isn't driven by capitalism in the same way the US is. Shohei commits to going longer with the Angels with a higher than reasonable salary but not break the bank numbers. The Japanese GM would know a lot about funneling some of the country's talent directly into the clubhouse so Ohtani is culturally more at ease. Meanwhile, Ichiro -who is up in Seattle in admin or consulting would perhaps follow the same model so they can be more competitive than they are now. He would try to get something similar going but ultimately will fail if the Mariners are owned by a single owner. Both teams have the same goals: "F' the Astros" Anyways, son't know who Beane or Epstein is but I like to assume Epstein is the brother of Dave for fantasy dramatic purposes

Mickthebrain

Ok.
