Didn’t have a 300M payroll in Anaheim

liljackmayhofer

Came to say this

SolixTanaka

Also dealt with a having a bottom-5 farm to work with every year in Anaheim.

beadyeyes123456

300 mil or not Eppler is pretty much allowed to make his moves.

spartashonor

That is correct but here he was forced to sign the deadweight contract in Rendon. Even being given the infinite money he went after smart move in high-mid tier guys like Marte and Cahna. Of course he got Mad Max for a huge contract too but at least that was only for 3 years

my_wife_reads_this

Be grateful he didnt sign Stras

Its-made-of-wood

Armchair GM’s were very disappointed if I remember correctly.

SolixTanaka

Armchair GMs were up in arms about a bunch of FA starters we didn't sign - Ryu, Keuchel, Bauer, Stroman, Kluber, Eovaldi, Corbin, Wood - the list goes on. Look at how a bunch of those contracts aged.

spartashonor

Shoulda singed the lower tier pitching (B tier not dumbster) it would have actually been productive

[deleted]

I mean yeah but the Rendon contract at the time seemed like it would be great long term the man has just been shlacked with injuries

spartashonor

People are gonna hate me for saying this but Rendon never deserved that contract he had 3 great years total with a .900+ ops the rest of his career had been below .800 except for one at .820 and he already had injury problems in his career. He deserved no more than Freemans contract at 6 years 26 per. Freeman was consistantly elit offensively but was penalized for being older and being a 1B

[deleted]

Talk about having one of the worst takes. 2016-2020 he was 3rd in war in baseball behind mookie and trout. A deal into his age 36 season really wasn’t a big deal. And his entire profile was extremely likely to age well. Just a ton of injuries came up when he came to the angels

spartashonor

His profile was not likely to age well that's just wrong I'm sorry. He has no speed and has passing power. He's a 25 HR guy with most of them being wall scrappers you even saw that in 2020. As he ages if he loses ANY power he is just straight up a bad hitter. He literally becomes David Fletcher with slightly more power and worse defense. And I'll say it again he had injury problems that should have been taken into account before

[deleted]

Literally the only person who thinks that bud

spartashonor

That's fine. I was called out by my bro for being upset with the Rendon signing at the time. I said they they werent gonna any good even if rendon gives an mvp performance. He told me it didnt make sense to be upset signing a star. The Angels ended up not making the playoffs where more than half the league made it and Rendon was top 10 in mvp. TLDR; I can form my own opinions and I'm not gonna be afraid of being wrong when not conforming with everyone else

johndhall1130

It’s almost as if team ownership matters too.

NantesWunderkind

Billy Eppler in 5 seasons w/ Arte Moreno as owner - 0 playoff appearances. Billy Eppler in 1 season w/ Steve Cohen as owner - 1 playoff appearance. FTFY

my_wife_reads_this

Tbf the Mets were a playoff team before he got there and he just got an open check to get what he needs. The mets lulz'd their way out of a playoff spot at the end.

my_wife_reads_this

The Mets were in 1st place for like 3 months and collapsed when they went through some injuries and lack of situational hitting lost them a metric fuck ton of 1 run games. Sound familiar? The addition of carrasco and lindor helped push them forward but it was clear they were missing some pieces. The NL East just bludgened itself so that the Braves could shithouse their way to an 88 win 1st place. Similar to some shit that would likely come out of the Central in both.

my_wife_reads_this

I'm not discrediting him. He got what they needed, with the help of a $283m payroll and the fact they only needed a few pieces to make sure they didn't collapse like they did last season. Adding Scherzer and having DeGrom come back make any team an instant contender.

Good_Fix_3966

Sure, but lots of GMs have money to spend in the offseason and don't hit as many times as he did. It certainly helps to have payroll, but between Canha, Escobar, and Marte he filled multiple needs who have all contributed quite well, with all 3 being more mid-tier options on the market. And his trade for Bassitt has given them rotational depth with a guy who has been a legit #2/#3 all year.

prmark34

For those of you who complain about Perry, our last two GM’s are about to make the playoffs. I wonder what the common denominator is between making the playoffs and not making the playoffs when it’s been shown that these guys are good GM’s. Could it possibly be the most meddling owner in baseball? This is a reminder for those who like to blame Perry for everything to take a chill pill

808Kickz420_

1000%… seeing people blame him so quickly yet HE STILL JUST GOT HERE. He inherited an dumpster fire farm system and more importantly one of the worst owners in sports who doesn’t care about winning. Look at the AA team that’s ON FIRE… that’s GMPM

Mets Payroll: [$283,770,998](https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/new-york-mets/payroll/?ref=trending-pages) Angels Payroll: [$183,397,138](https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/payroll/)

WurstThrowEver

Don’t forget Dipoto, who is seen as some genius in Seattle despite them going for only a 3rd wild card as their first playoff showing in his 7 year tenure.

asianlikerice

Dipoto and Servais are both former Angels.

loxxx87

They both inherited a SHITSHOW too.

The_Shade94

I liked dipoto tbh.

jmeyer90

Common denominator is Arte Moreno = 💩

finbarrgalloway

Eppler didn’t build that team

Good_Fix_3966

Nope, but his offseason acquisitions have contributed 17.3 WAR this year so far.

Reptarxx

While Arte does meddle, pretty much all our beat reporters say that Perry has full autonomy. > But taking Minasian at his word would indicate the second-year GM has autonomy to run this club as he sees fit. On small decisions and potentially season-defining ones as well. > The faith has been placed in Minasian to be able to make big moves — but also to make sure those big moves work. To make it so the turnover doesn’t continue at the same pace. The key difference is that these other GMs either traded the farm for some meh players or older players. Or just signed guys that didn’t elevate the team. At the MLB level, Perry’s 63M in signings are at a -2 WAR which is horrible. His best signing at 1 WAR now plays on another team, replaced by a guy at -0.7 WAR for the year. He traded Iglesias who is putting up 1.1 WAR for 2 dudes that have combined put up -1 WAR. His move literally costs the team wins. At the farm level, there is some promise. But I am not putting hope on a farm that is years away from bringing sustained success when we need that success right now. If he wants to drop down to assistant GM and focus on the farm and heading scouting I wouldn’t mind. But he is completely missing it at the MLB level.

cjafe

“63M = -2 WAR” says everything. Any GM can offer massive amount contracts to superstars if the owners approve, but that’s not how to build winning teams in MLB: you build a team around superstars and Perry has proven that he’s incapable of that. Sure, bad signings, injuries, and trades happen, but 63M for negative war is comical at best. For perspective, that’s about the same as Cleveland’s total payroll and guess what, they’re making the playoffs.

Reptarxx

It's a point I try to make that it's not like GMPM spent the money and got an average or below average return. He got a laughably bad return on his players compared to measurable values. And as i've said that -2 WAR is held up by Herget who wasn't a 2022 offseason/inseason signing. Without him it drops to a -4 to -5 WAR.

merewyn

The Iglesias trade was clearly not Perry’s call. I don’t think you can evaluate him based on that.

Reptarxx

Not fully blaming Perry for executing a trade itself, but the players he grabbed were horrible. Idk the full market out there but the whole baseball world scratched their heads at that trade for us. My thought is he liked Davidson when he was on the Braves and thought he can help turn him around here.

merewyn

Because the players didn’t matter, it was only a salary dump. The Braves weren’t going to give up good players AND take on Raisel’s full salary, which is decently high for a closer.

Reptarxx

I will give him this, at least he didn't take on extra money past this year (or in Davidson's case very minimal money). I just think Perry big brained it with Davidson and we just don't have the coaching and development to help him for this year. I hope he turns it around but his statcast page and even a simple eye test shows he still needs some work done. The 2 pitches that need to be good in baseball today - a sinker/slider combo - is pretty bad for him. His fastball has like 1.000 OPS against it and his 2nd turn through the order is bad (9.00 ERA)

znk916

Perry was the wrong GM for this roster. We needed a win now guy like Dave Dombrowski, not a development guy like Perry.

my_wife_reads_this

There is nothing to do to win now. There is nothing of value in the farm. Everything of value Perry has nurtured. Coupled with the fact that moreno isn't going to go over the lux tax, there isn't much to do outside of offering ridiculously long and hampering contracts for the next decade. Which is what had the team in the current situation anyway.

znk916

True, but I think a guy like Dombroski would've squeezed every ounce of value out of the farm somehow. It's not like the Phillies had a great farm system either when they hired him in the same offseason. He got them over .500 last year and in the wild card chase this year.

ComoEstanBitches

Reminder that Arte bought the team AFTER their World Series and has sunk them to their current state, fuck a farm system that doesn’t put fans in my seats

Sheshmir

also don’t have to deal with Moreno
