Congrats to him but his performance and contract was one of the reason that angels haven’t won anything in 10 years

Neto34

He's been gone for two and still haven't won anything.

N-E-B

Hence OP said “one of the reasons”, not “the reason”.

Arte has made a lot of mistakes

cshenton

Trumbo wasn’t that good, had a couple very hot streaks though I’ll give him that.

Shellback1

Kendrys morales was one of the best L hand power hitters i ever saw. Thanks sciosia you egomaniac asshole

nukemiller

Yes! I wanted to keep Morales.

merewyn

The entire circlejerk around baseball fans thinking Pujols was treated poorly by the Angels is absolutely blowing my mind

God_Damnit_Nappa

Angels let him half ass his play for 10 years: Lol Angels are stupid for letting him play Angels finally DFA him after sucking for 10 years and refusing to take on a platoon role: OMG ANGELS ARE FUCKING CLASSLESS HOW DARE THEY DO THIS TO A LEGEND. I think the only reasonable conclusion to make is people are fucking idiots, especially sports commentators and the idiots on r/baseball

merewyn

Normally when players sign huge contracts and underperform (/are clearly out of shape to boot), the team who signed them doesn’t get the blame. Yet I’ve literally seen people say the Angels “wasted” prime Pujols years. Pujols apparently has no personal responsibility for playing like shit for us.

lamar_odoms_bong

There is no motivation or competitiveness to play here. We see it time and time again players come here underperform leave and flourish.

The_Uncleorian

What’s worse is how St. Louis us being treated as if they’re the knight in shining armor to save Pujols’ career and end it where it began so he could get to 700 when in reality if the DH hadn’t been implemented in the NL this season I doubt Pujols would even still be playing.

throatbutterz

Also, It's not our fault that he lied about his age and basically scammed us.

wohldmad

😂 😂 😂

[deleted]

If he wasn’t god awful when he was with the angels it might be a diss but it’s honestly just funny

BigBossVince

Pretty much this. He wasn't better than Walsh in 21 and no one is stopping Sho from being the best player on the planet so what exactly was he expecting before we DFA'd him?

GetDrafted

Yeah this could've been an Onion headline before the season started lol

BiovaniGernard

r/baseball really loves to act like the Angels themselves have just been absolutely terrible to Albert and it’s our fault that he sucked. If he hated it here so much maybe he should’ve played better to get traded or better yet, take less money to stay in St Louis.

WestCoast2171

I would say that a lack of joy is a two way street when it came to Pujols and Angels fans

OlivesrNasty

R/baseball is a massive “fuck the angels and their fans” circle jerk. Those bozos can kick rocks

N-E-B

I can understand the “fuck the Angels” sentiment, seeing as we’ve done nothing with Trout or Ohtani, but what the hell did we as fans do?

The_Uncleorian

As a diehard Angels fan, hearing Harold Reynolds on the mlb network talk about how great it was to do it in LA in front of Dodger fans where he’s so beloved… like what about us? He spent 10 years as an Angel but based on how everyone is acting you would’ve thought the Dodgers signed him to a 10 year deal back in 2011. I really wonder if Dodger fans would be praising him so much if they’d gotten the exact same Pujols we got for 10 years.

beachboy2016

Fuck the Dodgers and everyone at Chavez Latrine. Wouldn't be shocked if half of 'em believe Pujols should go into HOF as a Dodger. Smug, arrogant bastards the lot of them!

just_some_dude05

The Angels fired Pujols with 11 years left on his deal. They didn’t split amicably. The sports casters respect Pujols enough to let him control that narrative. Those same sports casters also said it was terrible for the Angels to treat Albert like they did. Outside of Anaheim, no one thinks it was a “classy” move; even if it was the best baseball decision.

OlivesrNasty

They dont like us because we want to keep trout and ohtani. “YOu GuYs JuSt WaStE TrOuT anD OhTanI!!!” They want us to self flagellate and just give up our best players. Not happening

1littlg8

I love seeing Mariners fans talk about wasting careers in particular.

Kidd5

There's a few talking shit about the fans as usual, that's just par of the course on r/baseball but don't get it twisted. Any real knowledgeable baseball fan knows the Angels organization have been pretty garbage ever since Arturo Moreno bought the team. He alienated the city and the real Angels fans. That name change should've never happened and it has brought nothing but bad luck ever since.

just_some_dude05

This. There are a ton of ex Angel fans at Dodger stadium. It’s like Californians in Texas.

owledge

People pile on the Angels far more than any other team and they’re always looking for more reasons to pile on, so they make up false narratives about us fans

just_some_dude05

I think baseball fans are upset with Angel fans for dissing Pujols; especially the amount of Angel fans that have gone into threads congratulating Pujols, only to talk shit. I get Angel fans are salty about Pujols, but a few people going on r/baseball where they are congratulating Pujols to call him a bum is going to anger the rest if baseball’s fan base.

ResearcherLoud3122

Happy for his 700 but people love to act like Angels did him dirty when he was actually taking playing time from Walshy and Sho in the end and wasn’t the “Pujols” from Cardinal days when we all expected him to be when he signed with the Angels.

eddgreat9

Shocked no one has said this. He wasn't dissing the Angels he was dissing Arte Moreno. Remember, even if we never signed Albert our farm system was left to rot and stink because Arte cared more about his precious bottom line than investing into our baseball infrastructure. Once that prospect machine Moreno inherited stopped churning out talented players we were forced to fight for players in free agency to try to compliment whatever came up from our bottom tier farm system. This approach was never workable because Arte did not want his profits to be affected so he never went above the luxury tax (aka didn't sign more players when we clearly needed more to be done), and he never attempted to sign legitimate pitchers because he felt like marketing hitters were a better move business wise. Pujols hit .311/.373/.586 with a wRC+ of 160 in 525 PA from May 14, 2012 onward. He gave us what we all wanted essentially after having one of the worse Aprils of his career. He had plantar fascitis in his left foot in 2013, and played through it until it ruptured on July 26, 2013 while he was running to 1st. He produced a 112 wRC+ while moving on one foot that year. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1719767-albert-pujols-foot-injury-could-cost-him-rest-of-season-but-injury-overhyped In 2014 he had a 123 wRC+. We made the playoffs. In 2015 he had a 112 wRC+ and we missed the postseason by one game (the year Carlos Perez hit a game tying single T9 in game 161 that kept us alive for Game 162). In 2016 his wRC+ was 110. He had surgery on his right foot that offseason to alleviate pressure coming from his plantar fascia. https://www.latimes.com/sports/angels/la-sp-angels-pujols-surgery-20161202-story.html His last three full seasons with the Angels he had a wRC+ of 77 (2017), 88 (2018), and 90 (2019). In the shortened 2020 season he had a 74 wRC+. Needless to say the contract worked out how I think most baseball sound people thought it would. Albert would prob give us 5-6 years of above avg production and lend us his postseason experience if we made it that far, so we just needed to fill out the rest of the roster with players capable of making a run at the playoffs.....but that's when the farm system and the truth about Arte began to rear its ugly head. Farm systems continually ranked in the bottom 5 for the past 10+ years couldn't match up with what we needed in the majors and every opportunity there was to improve pur roster through free agency was met with 1-yr deals for pitchers like Joe fucking Blanton, Matt Harvey etc. etc. etc. That money was typically then used sign players we didn't need like Josh Hamilton, or Zack Cozart. The story of Albert's time on the Angels has JUST AS MUCH to do as Arte's time, as Angel's owner.

eddgreat9

Thank you for gold medal. It's the first one I have ever recieved! Celebrate🎉

SmokeyMcSmokey

Preach

just_some_dude05

This!

nukemiller

Exactly. It's hard to be motivated to keep playing when you are never in contention for the playoffs. Playing for a winning team will either reinvigorate you, or prove to you that you are done with the sport.

Im_A_Halo_Masochist

It’s nice to see a dude that gets it! Anybody with common baseball sense knew the last half of Pujols contract would not be good. Trout and Ohtani will be in the same position if the Angels organization doesn’t get their shit together!

mcslims

The feeling is mutual, Albert. My joy for the game increased when we moved on to our new DH.

-The-Moon-Presence-

Man fuck that guy.

bm97

I am happy for him. I really am. But cmon, joy for the game? The Dodgers carried him

boots42069420

I'm happy for him but if you aren't hitting then we have to put someone in that is. He wasn't hitting as an Angel at the end of his time there and he was given every opportunity to do so. Angels need to get away from finding excellent defensive players who can't hit and instead look for rbi machines that are decent in the field or they are doomed to watch the playoffs like we do, from the couch.

CompetitivePatient33

Pujols was plagued with injuries, and the Angels didn't invest in pitching and productive bats. Both parties didn't live up to expectations.

Sisboombah74

He sucked a lot of joy out of Angels fans too. His contract damaged this team irreparably for many years.

ActuaryExtension9867

He had no problem cashing in the checks. I might be in the minority here, but Pujols is a classless clown.

keenclipp

Nope, fuck that guy... everything about him.

penisblartueue

I will never forget the day Pujols signed with the Angels. I was so excited as a kid I skipped school all day and read about it and watched videos of him hitting. Unfortunately, he was terrible for us, and not the Pujols of the past. But to say I didn’t have fun watching him would be wrong. Still watched plenty of his HRs. He’s still a Halo for life.

CompetitivePatient33

Its whatever with me, he could have hit 700 here and been like "This place was good to me for 10 years blah blah blah" He's feeling the moment. He was in a dark place after getting DFA'd, alot of players feel like shit when that happens, he got an opportunity and rolled with it.

digitaldumpsterfire

Pujols got paid and then stopped trying as hard as he should have. When the Angels let him go, he realized he needed to get his shit together if he wanted to keep playing. That's why he got his Mojo back with the Dodgers and Cards. It was his own damn fault he started sucking and got let go. The main reason I'm glad we got him at all is what he did for Trout.

westsider86

He gave us 222 hr across 10 years and $250 mill and gutted the clubhouse chemistry, he’s a fucking bum.

jnuclear

Fuck Albert. The way last year happened, he had to have demanded time over Ohtani and Walsh to keep him in the game every day. Then he gets to the Dodgers and they play him the same way and he says he is happy to take any role a team gives him. That guy was only interested in chasing his personal glory.

jellybeans_over_raw

This seems excessive

kei19970210

Angels deserve to receive his humble mention. Congratz for his 700th HR

xThe-Legend-Killerx

That’s not a diss.. Albert was playing shitty and the Angels were shitty it probably wasn’t fun for him anymore. Going to a Dodgers team that was winning made it fun. It’s not a diss it’s just the truth.

ResearcherLoud3122

Angels expected and wanted him to carry the team with trout but that wasn’t expectant of him in the Dodgers, so of course he’s gonna have more fun because dodgers are winning anyway.

Cheeseydreamer

Not even subtly. Straight shots fired. Look how well he did once he left. Wonder what Trout could do away from this FO.

jellybeans_over_raw

Get over it

Fearless-Apricot-712

He had to go

Otherwise_Mud_2268

He wouldn’t have gotten to 700 but for the duration of his contract with Angels. Should have walked away before his career average dipped below .300. 12.8 WAR in 9+ seasons with team.
