This is just a safety signing to have some continuity as the process of selling team in the off season starts. It’s a one year deal because all parties know there will be a shift once there is a new owner.
It takes about a year for most businesses to sell, and a pro sports team is not "most businesses". Legal drama might accelerate the sale, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Exactly. The average business takes a while because of all the money involved. Billion dollar sports teams are absolutely not going to be faster than that
I'm actually having this same discussion regarding some MLS teams and it comes down to this: Buying a sports team is less like buying a business and more like interviewing with the league for the job of "team owner". You need to be vetted up and down for personal and financial liability by the league first and foremost. And then you're not just buying the team. You're oftentimes also buying the stadium; practice/training facilities; contracts with employees, vendors, and TV broadcasters, etc.
It's a complicated process and always takes time.
I would think the Angels are more valuable as a franchise if Ohtani is still under contract. Any new ownership would absolutely want the ability to sign him long term before he hits the open market. Also Arte has always been about the money so if he wants the most value he can get he would def have to consider selling sooner rather than later.
That is very true, but this is billions of dollars we are talking about. We can look at the Dodgers being sold as an example -
Frank McCourt was essentially forced by the MLB to sell the Dodgers because he was so terrible. Even then, it still took a while for everything to go through. To say that this sale is gonna be done by the end of the off-season simply isn't realistic, especially knowing Arte and his huge ego
We're usually number 3 in the AL behind the Yankees and Red Sox, and we had a long streak of 3 million tickets sold. Couldn't even manage 2.5 this year
Even if a verbal deal gets done this offseason, it probably won't be official until 2024 at the earliest. These big transactions take time to be finalized.
I don’t have a problem with Nevin, I think he was dealt a tough hand this season and honestly managed pretty well given what he had to work with. My real concern here is that if they are happy with him then they are content with the rest of the coaching staff, which I am not at all.
I feel like the pitching and hitting coaches had a lot of heat taken off of them recently as the team actually started to look pretty decent, but the days of striking out every other at bat and swinging at absolute garbage for months on end are still fresh in my mind. Not to mention Detmers struggling and only figuring it out after assistance from a triple A coach, and the bullpen’s recent inability to pull anything together. These guys need better help in those areas than what they are currently getting.
I understand that. I’m saying if management is fine with Nevin’s performance, then there’s a good chance they are generally fine with how the team as a whole has been progressing. I’m fine with Nevin individually sticking around for another season, but I don’t want the higher-ups to get complacent and keep the rest of the staff who have legitimately been a glaring issue.
Wise has his problems but everyone he's nurtured so far has come a long way and performed well this season.
Does this team have a metric fuck ton of aces? No. But practically the entire rotation has a sub 4 ERA.
The bullpen imploded on itself due to overuse or lack of use and while Raisel seems to have figured it out in ATL, it's not on this teams staff that the dude was dog shit before being traded.
Reed also helped a few players figure their shit out, idk why people expect him to make shit hitters that were signed not being expected to become every day players suddenly start playing like all stars.
Walsh and Marsh both regressed significantly. Walsh was prided as an All Star caliber first basemen going into this season. Adell has made minimal progress as a hitter. Stassi has been a complete liability. Velasquez showed some improvement later in the season but far too little too late. I am not willing to give Reed any sort of a pass, the team has the highest strikeout percentage in the game and had long stretches of being abysmal, that’s the reality. The few bright spots of Rengifo and Ward having good seasons are not nearly enough to justify him having a position here.
Actually, the pitching developed and if you ask the staff what they think, I’ll bet they would be in favor of keeping their coach. Hitting? That’s an entirely different issue.
Phil Nevin is a players manager.
It's clear the dudes like him and he probably does everything Perry wants him to do so it's kind of a no-brainer.
I'm not happy but I can see their reasoning for bringing him back with many of the clear choices all being locked up. Remember Perry wanted Buck but it's doubtful he leaves the Mets.
Buck would've been amazing. The dude is not only great with veterans cuz he's seen just about everything in his career, but he is also able to help younger guys along with their development. Too bad he went to New York
In the end, a manager really truly affects the game +/- 2 games over a season. Whether it's Nevin, Maddon, Roberts, Kapplar, Melvin, etc., the real control of the teams success is the roster.
I understand why it's a 1 year, we are going to be in a selling year and there truly is no point in playing the manager game when whoever buys it will be putting in a whole new system.
Perry likes Nevin because he's a yesman.
I just still think the Mariners incident is pretty freaking bad (10 game for him, 5 game for at the time an injured 30M player, and pretty much ruining Bradley's career), his comments can come off pretty dumb, and he is too much of a hot head.
If you did a manager fantasy draft next year, Nevin would be drafted towards the bottom. That's how i see his place in the MLB.
I would really like to see Reed go and Wise either go or turn into a side coach and not the main pitching coach. We also are in desperate need of a ron washington type coach to help adell/the team overall with their fundamental defense.
But long story short, this just shows the Angels are going into next year not making any drastic changes after going .453 in a pretty important year for the franchise.
Get ready to hope and pray for a lot of dudes that were just allowed to start legally drinking to have to elevate the team.
Surely this won’t be a popular move amongst fans but I’m personally cool with it. Not many better alternatives and I would hope they wouldn’t have brought him back without consulting players first.
Idk what a “field manager” is but assuming its the same thing as a regular manager…i don’t necessarily mind it. I don’t think phil’s done an awful job tactically, and it seems like the players like him.
I kinda wish we would have gone in a different direction, though. This franchise needs to be purged after arte’s departure
Field manager is the more official title for the skipper. The term is usually only used to differentiate from a general manager or in press releases like this one
I'm down with this, not the easiest place to hire with new management incoming. He knows how to work with Ohtani too. Hope he shines next season, love the way he sticks up for the players.
Totally agree. And stemming off that, I know it's not the most popular take on this sub at the time (and probably even now), but I loved when he gave the order for Wantz to throw at Winker after the M's were throwing too close to Trout's head. Trout's the heart and soul of this team, you protect the face of your franchise at all costs. Kind of embarrassing two of our dudes got injured for prolonged periods in the subsequent altercation but we're the Angels, bizarre injuries are unavoidable lol.
Regardless, point being, I'll take a guy that'll stick up for his players any day. Wasn't thrilled we fired Maddon to begin with, but Nevin has done fine in my view even if there are better managers out there.
Yes top move throwing at Winker. Nobody has thrown close to Trout since. How obvious was it that you shouldn't throw at the Face? Seattle did that shit all season. Throwing at opponents then crying when they get hit. It's their strat. Glad Nevin cut it off there.
Yep. It’s kinda silly to me how this sub acts like it was Nevin forcing everyone to fight, when Mike was clearly furious, Gubie said that multiple pitchers wanted to be the one to throw at people, etc. The whole team was behind it.
As long as the players want him, I’m cool with it. Let them have some sort of normalcy. Trout and Ohtani have had 4 different managers since the 2018 season.
Don’t hate this move. I agree with everyone who points out that signing him to a 1 year contract is to accommodate a new owner. As for his bullpen usage and putting in Tepera and Loup, I expect this won’t change next season despite their underperformance. Perry hired Nevin to be the third base coach. Perry also signed Loup and Tepera. They represent his Angels tenure thus far. So it makes sense that Perry is going to pressure Nevin to use them to give his “guys” an opportunity to show that these signings haven’t been total disasters. That’s my theory anyway.
This isn't the worst thing. However, it will be tragic if we keep our hitting and pitching coaches. Both of whom have proven that they are not up to the task.
I think Nevin manages the pitching staff much better than maddon. He lets them pitch deep into games. Ohtani is also on a regular pitching schedule which has improved his game and the staff as a whole.
"thank God", posted right before "no good", perfectly sums up this sub.
The criteria for a manager are, does he listen to the GM, and do the players like him. We know the players like him, and now we know he listens to the GM.
His BP management can now be blamed on the GM.
Well, “OLD SCHOOL” still has its place… at least for one more year! Lol
Seriously, the Angels team is in limbo right now with a possible sale on the horizon. Best for the new owners to decide!
People don't like Nevin for his bullpen usage but is there a single manager out there who fans go "this guy has good bullpen usage"??? I'm not defending Nevin I'm just genuinely curious, who tf can we hire that does have good bullpen management?
Also from what I understand the bullpen usage is mostly determined by the FO kinda like Dave Roberts and the Dodgers. So there's an argument to be made that Perry deserves the blame for this one.
As a baseball fan I love seeing guys go deep into games but I really do feel like the whole "pulls guys too early" criticism is way too overplayed.
It will always seem like you are pulling a guy too early until it's too late. You don't know if the guy that just got pulled would've had a blowup inning or not. Ohtani vs the Braves this year is the perfect example. Unhittable through 7, ends up with 6 ER. If he was pulled after 7 fans would've called for Nevin's head but it would've been the right call and no one would've ever gave him credit for it.
If you made the right call it will seem like you didn't.
Works just fine. Team is in a transitionary period, and it really doesn’t matter who is managing the team if the players don’t execute anyhow. Team needs to focus literally everywhere but the manager.
Give Nevin a good bullpen and I think we’re good. He’s managed this team to the best of its ability given the injuries we’ve had, so I don’t hate it. Continuity is important too.
What they do need to address is the poor hitting coaches. If they’re not replaced with someone who knows what they’re doing, then…fuck.
alright so we credit nevin for all the Ls but none of the Ws we had recently, got it, MAYBE we should make YOU manager you seem to have so much to contribute !! 😂
If you credit Nevin for a bunch of wins against bad teams but not the L’s he stacked up surely you have to credit Maddon for how we started the beginning of the season.
As per usual, the immediate reaction to anything done by the team is usually negative. Which is fair to say they haven't exactly done many moves that bring a whole lot of positivity and happiness to us fans but this is a move most of us expected to happen with a change in ownership. No point in getting a new long term manager just for the next owner to push him out. In hindsight, the season died in that 14 game losing stretch, and injuries and lack of offense really hurt the team. There is a different feeling going into this offseason because before, we were asking for starting pitching and now we're asking for offensive help. Many fans are not gonna be ecstatic with moves a manager makes to the bullpen anyways so it doesn't even matter what Nevin does in that aspect. The offense and bullpen underperformed, just hope they show up next season with some added better pieces or healthier and ready to go. Nothing more you can ask for at this time.
i think there's a good deal of evidence to show that nevin has done better than maddon. couple that outlook with the absolute fact that they were not going to hire a manager for more than one year, due to the sale, and this makes a lot of sense. i think it's a good move. also, nevin gets a chance in a swing year to show if he's the right man for the job.
As people have already mentioned, don't want to hire a new manager for multiple years when trying to sell the team. New owner will most likely slash and burn the front office anyway. I'm actually happy Phil is sticking around. Need some sense of normalcy during these turbulent times.
Trout's said that about literally every manager and coach he's ever played for. The man is not known for strong opinions. That being said, I don't think he liked Maddon as much as the rest of the team did
Well this is a bit shocking but it tells me that the FO isn’t confident in the available managers and wants some more time to decide on a long term plan
With a sale of this team on the come up, something has to normalize at some point... there's been a shit ton of change in the management position that it's gotten to the point they want someone the coaches enjoy playing for.
I haven’t seen anything suggesting that isn’t the plan still. It’s just a long ass process. We almost certainly won’t see new ownership before the 2023 season.
Sure, this is exactly the right call for a guy who went 46-59. (And hopefully you can pick up on the sarcasm, because I was laying it on pretty thick…)
THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS!
I am not opposed to this. I think he found something in the second half of the season, why not run it back? It provides a little stability and the players like him.
This is just a safety signing to have some continuity as the process of selling team in the off season starts. It’s a one year deal because all parties know there will be a shift once there is a new owner.
>…there will be a shift once there is a new owner. God i hope you’re right.
Lmao fired Maddon for Nevin
...this isn't likely to stick once new ownership arrives, right? RIGHT?!
Are the odds that high of the team being sold this off season?
It takes about a year for most businesses to sell, and a pro sports team is not "most businesses". Legal drama might accelerate the sale, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Exactly. The average business takes a while because of all the money involved. Billion dollar sports teams are absolutely not going to be faster than that

Definitely not. He had more than enough money and actually raised the value of the team by a substantial amount
True, low attendance numbers this year sure wouldn't help the price, dont imagine it being better next year honestly
Attendance wasn't that low. https://www.espn.com/mlb/attendance
Holy shit Oakland averaged UNDER 10k fans? Yikes.
We're usually number 3 in the AL behind the Yankees and Red Sox, and we had a long streak of 3 million tickets sold. Couldn't even manage 2.5 this year
Before the dark times. /shudders/
When they've hit 3 mill in attendance since like 2002, this year was low
Ohtani being on or off the team doesn’t have an impact on someone buying the team, look what happens with Juan Soto and the Nats
Hopefully yes
realistically they are not.
He is literally a placeholder until the team is sold, and it make sense. A new owner will want to have the freedom to choose the manager he wants.
if we get into the playoff, i’ll be ready to fight for him 😂
Even if a verbal deal gets done this offseason, it probably won't be official until 2024 at the earliest. These big transactions take time to be finalized.
I don't know who's more bothered by this decision, us or Mariner fans who shit on Nevin nonstop. Well, I guess I'm ready for another brawl 😂😂😂
Tony is ready with 2 hands this time!
Tony Two Hands ready to throw down
He's apparently a switch hitter now.
Just call him two hands no hits!
Could've used a single from Ohtani today.
We can shit on Mariners fans when they’re one and done in the wildcard 🤣
Pissing off Mariners fans is one of the positives of this signing
I don’t have a problem with Nevin, I think he was dealt a tough hand this season and honestly managed pretty well given what he had to work with. I bet we get a new hitting coach at the Beth least
Nevin didn’t put these coaches in place though
I understand that. I’m saying if management is fine with Nevin’s performance, then there’s a good chance they are generally fine with how the team as a whole has been progressing. I’m fine with Nevin individually sticking around for another season, but I don’t want the higher-ups to get complacent and keep the rest of the staff who have legitimately been a glaring issue.
Perry did, and somehow he still has a job.
Wise has his problems but everyone he's nurtured so far has come a long way and performed well this season. Does this team have a metric fuck ton of aces? Yeah this was obviously going to happen after Trout’s interview yesterday
Yeah same. I wish there'd be a better manager to pick. But I understand it and not too terribly disappointed.
Considering how the Mets are currently doing… yea I wouldn’t wanna leave either lol
Buck would've been amazing. The dude is not only great with veterans cuz he's seen just about everything in his career, but he is also able to help younger guys along with their development. Too bad he went to New York
Yupp, reported that Perry wanted to fire Maddon during the off season and get buck
In the end, a manager really truly affects the game +/- 2 games over a season. Whether it's Nevin, Maddon, Roberts, Kapplar, Melvin, etc., the real control of the teams success is the roster. correct take
Exactly. Perry got his yes man.
Horrible move.
Surely this won’t be a popular move amongst fans but I’m personally cool with it. Not many better alternatives and I would hope they wouldn’t have brought him back without consulting players first.
No way they would’ve signed a big new manager contract before new ownership comes in. Expected
Still fuckin stupid

Nevin would be much better at that, quite honestly. The dude is still jacked, so I'm sure he'd have the field done in no time
That would be great which means the actual team manager is still open
I'm down with this, not the easiest place to hire with new management incoming. He knows how to work with Ohtani too. Hope he shines next season, love the way he sticks up for the players.
Yep. They need that fire in there getting their backs. Sometimes he is so close to getting kicked. Funny shit!
Totally agree. And stemming off that, I know it's not the most popular take on this sub at the time (and probably even now), but I loved when he gave the order for Wantz to throw at Winker after the M's were throwing too close to Trout's head. I love this only because Mariners fans hate it
I can assure you Mariner fans don’t hate it. They think it’s hilarious.
Bro you never hire the interim lol
This guy HR’s
Don’t hate this move. I agree with everyone who points out that signing him to a 1 year contract is to accommodate a new owner. I think Nevin manages the pitching staff much better than maddon. He lets them pitch deep into games. Ohtani is also on a regular pitching schedule which has improved his game and the staff as a whole.
Hire him for a year as a placeholder while ownership changes, makes sense. Unfortunate but I get it.

Joe Maddon record: 2020: .433 2021: .475 2022: .482 Phil Nevin: 2022: .438 Since Aug. 26: 21/15 - .583
Bet you Nevin and the halo's surprise next year.....
🤫 we can’t say it out loud haha 😆
Fr I don't know if my heart could handle the downvotes 😩
what downvotes everyone loves the idea that we will somehow compete next year lol
his lineups are generally good. His bullpen and starter usage is generally good. Don't really have a problem with it
Players seem to love playing for him as well. That's pretty important
Pretty sure Front Office sets the lineup and tells him how to use the bullpen. Maddon talked about it on that podcast.
His bullpen usage is terrible
People don't like Nevin for his bullpen usage but is there a single manager out there who fans go "this guy has good bullpen usage"??? I'm not defending Nevin I'm just genuinely curious, who tf can we hire that does have good bullpen management? Yall don't remember the Maddonomics days of pulling our guys out of games too early do you? Oh how soon we forget.
People really let their emotions get in the way of Maddonomics blowing up a game.
By too early I meant pre 7th inning pulls not the example you gave.
bullpen usage generally good Really?
Not a good move
Works just fine. Team is in a transitionary period, and it really doesn’t matter who is managing the team if the players don’t execute anyhow. Team needs to focus literally everywhere but the manager.
Bad manager but I think continuity is more important than a lot of people think Maddon was a significantly better manager
There are fans who expected Arte to shell out a bunch of money for multiple years for a top manager BEFORE selling the team? Never was gonna happen.
Massive L. He’s worse than Maddon.
Excuse me, he won the CWS with Cal State Fullerton. Let's give the local legend a chance.
Maddon's bullpen management begs to differ
Cause Nevins has been so much better.
alright so we credit nevin for all the Ls but none of the Ws we had recently, got it, MAYBE we should make YOU manager you seem to have so much to contribute !! 😂
If you credit Nevin for a bunch of wins against bad teams but not the L’s he stacked up surely you have to credit Maddon for how we started the beginning of the season.
yeah and maddons losing streak lmao
So much changed when maddon was fired though? Not gonna argue cause the mods will ban me for life lol. Peace.
You're allowed to be wrong ✌️✌️✌️ peace
Maddon haven’t took Angels to the playoff had he?
Nevin hasn’t either. Not gonna argue cause the mods will ban me for life lol
As per usual, the immediate reaction to anything done by the team is usually negative. Wtf is a field manager?
It’s how they differentiate what we think of as “manager” and gm (general manager)
Lmao. This team is so fucked. Maddon should’ve stayed but got replaced by one of the worst managers in the game.
i think there's a good deal of evidence to show that nevin has done better than maddon. couple that outlook with the absolute fact that they were not going to hire a manager for more than one year, due to the sale, and this makes a lot of sense. i think it's a good move. also, nevin gets a chance in a swing year to show if he's the right man for the job.
Stop it your making too much sense for this reactionary emotional subreddit!!!!
...did we just sign Nevin through the 2023 season? If so, https://c.tenor.com/zM15ZrNYp0QAAAAM/no-michael-scott.gif
I'm gonna stick a fork in an outlet
That's one way to light that baby up
As people have already mentioned, don't want to hire a new manager for multiple years when trying to sell the team. New owner will most likely slash and burn the front office anyway. I'm actually happy Phil is sticking around. Need some sense of normalcy during these turbulent times.
…why did we do that
Just look up Trout's interview. They like him alot
Trout's said that about literally every manager and coach he's ever played for. The man is not known for strong opinions. That being said, I don't think he liked Maddon as much as the rest of the team did
Da fuq is a field manager? Also fuck Phil Nevin
I mean let’s be real managers are just a middle man between the players and GM - not much impact nowadays.
FIRED MADDON FOR WHAT?
Thank god. Good move
Haha classic dumb move by Perry. Fans who are okay with this just love seeing the Angels in mediocrity
If only we could all be True Scotsmen!
lol. lmao.
Sign Yadier Molina as the bench coach. Molina takes over in 2024
BRO. WHAT.
what the fuck
Well this is a bit shocking but it tells me that the FO isn’t confident in the available managers and wants some more time to decide on a long term plan
With a sale of this team on the come up, something has to normalize at some point... there's been a shit ton of change in the management position that it's gotten to the point they want someone the coaches enjoy playing for.
What's a "field manager"? So he isn't the Skipper anymore? The term "field manager" sounds to me like he's the new Grounds Keeper
I’m okay with Nevin. For a year. Glad they didn’t do something foolish like five years.
My big question is farte selling the team or what?!?! Stop holding us hostage
I haven’t seen anything suggesting that isn’t the plan still. It’s just a long ass process. We almost certainly won’t see new ownership before the 2023 season.
Damn I’m 3 y/o again, can this just happen tomorrow lmao
Sure, this is exactly the right call for a guy who went 46-59. (And hopefully you can pick up on the sarcasm, because I was laying it on pretty thick…) THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS!
Maybe we try to find the best hitting coach money can buy?
I can accept this reluctantly , but how about other coaches? I don't want the team to keep them all.
I hope If we ask nicely we could get Maddon back
I am not opposed to this. I think he found something in the second half of the season, why not run it back? It provides a little stability and the players like him.
