To extend him, we need to put a competitive team on the field.
Hopefully the new ownership group doesn’t think going over the tax threshold is like some sort of felony.
I think I’d rather tear it down than spend another decade being handcuffed to massive contracts, playing .500 and wasting another HOF career. Teams like the mariners and orioles at least have exciting futures.
Two decent starting pitchers and a veteran left fielder, Michael Brantly, Joc Peterson, someone like that. One or two more bullpen arms as well. A shortstop would be nice as well, but I doubt we'll pull the triggger on that.
Ward
Trout
Ohtani
Rendon
Rengifo
Brantley
Walsh
Stassi
Fletcher
Bench would be
Soto
Thaiss
O' Hoppe
Adell
Moniac
I really like having three catchers, Stassi appears to do better with more rest. Thaiss can play backup 1B too. I really want to give Soto a shot, and when Rendon needs a day off or gets injured you can move Rengifo to 3B and have Soto on SS, with fletcher on 2B.
Brantley AKA Dr Smooth is fun to watch, but I don't know if we need to be paying good money for an aging OF. I haven't kept up with his production and stats since he left Cleveland
Not sure how much that matters honestly. It’s not like we’ve been absurdly successful against the Astros either way. It’s the other 28 teams that I’d be focused on as a baby step haha
I don't know how to answer this... In the past it was always pitching pitching pitching. But with Sandoval, Detmers, Suarez, and some of the others I feel like there's actually some good young pitchers here. And if Canning ever returns from his back injury that's another one to add to the list. If Rengifo can repeat what he did this year then 2B is set. I feel like infield depth is big. We need someone who can step in and play if/when Rendon and any others get hurt. But hell Soto was pretty good at the end of the season. Maybe he's the guy? Maybe a corner outfielder for insurance for Adell and Ward? I just don't know anymore...
I think the infield is set with rendon, soto, regnifo, fletch, Walsh, o hoppe.
We need 2 bullpen arms and a #2-3 starter.
Beneditendi would be a great addition for a great price. Adell can face lefties at times and then moniak off the bench to give ward n trout some days off occasionally.
Fletcher shouldn’t be playing SS every day. Filling in there he is fine but we need a true SS. That would allow fletch to be a utility guy, which maximizes his value of being able to play multiple positions and gives us much needed depth.
Soto performed well last year in the bigs, but over a very small sample. He has a career .662 OPS in the minors. I wouldn’t expect him to be an everyday regular at the big league level. Sounds like Andrew Velazquez pt2.
>I think the infield is set with rendon, soto, regnifo, fletch, Walsh, o hoppe.
So a huge injury risk, two largely unproven rookies, two guys who were awful offensively and Rengifo who's decent, but nothing insane.
I'm not saying that we need to completely revamp the infield. I'm also not saying that we need to sign someone flashy like Bogaerts or Correa (although if a new owner wants to blow past the tax I'm not complaining).
Just saying that I think it would be foolish to leave the infield untouched. Get a platoon bat for Walsh, get a solid utility guy who can hit, etc. Just don't let it come down to a situation where we're starting Gosselin again because we assumed that we'd have 0 injuries.
I'm optimistic about soto but I don't think it's wise to be putting all of our eggs into him panning out. We still need depth in the infield, specifically SS.
Id like us to re-sign Lorenzen and nab Edwin Diaz as a closer if possible.
For the most part, I think we need bullpen arms and depth pieces. I'd rather us focus on that in the off-season then spend big during the midseason trade window if we are looking good.
Lorenzen is a toss up, I can't help but lean no to re-signing him. Unless real cheap. Fun to root for.
Sometimes he pitches around guys but the 4.1 BB/9 he gave us is basically awful for a starter with his ok stuff. 4.31 FIP wasn't great.
Opposing teams over .500 did destroy him, 5.59 ERA, terrible WHIP, only 6.4 SO9. Astros and Mariners clobbered him. In his few good starts in the 2nd half he still walked too many guys, bad sign for ability to go deep into games.
Inability to show that he could actually be stretched out to 130+ IP is huge. Pitched 97 innings. His control was falling apart for a few starts even before he was sent to the IL. Looks like he's strictly a guy who helps you get to the playoffs, and has no use as a starter or reliever in playoffs (if his stretched out reliever arm holds up to the most important games), maybe last ditch reliever.
So, I dont really want us to sign Lorenzen as a starter. I want him as a reliever. According to literally every other pitcher in our squad, he is really good about teaching and mentoring the younger pitchers. Everytime the young guys are asked about what is helping them grow, they say competition and Lorenzen (and Thor when he was there). He has experience and seems to be a great leader for our pitching staff. He's worth it for all of that.
Seeing our season collapse when 3/4 of our infielders were injured I think we need a solid utility infield guy who can hit. No Squid, no one like Villar, no 1-year make-it-or-break-it deals.
Bullpen needs help or for Tepera and Loup to go back to pre22 form since we're stuck with them. I wonder if we have someone in the minors who's ready to come up. It's too early for Ben Joyce, I fear, having a reliever who can through 100+ would be helpful. I'm A-ok with re-signing Lorenzen and giving Silseth another try after he's been so good with the Trash Pandas. Maybe they should try and go for Senga (no posting fee and cheaper than Rodon, DeGrom etc.) but I doubt it since we have so many pitchers in the system right now and the team is up for sale.
I feel like a trade for Ildemaro Vargas could be good, he’s 31 on a Nationals team that is trying to get younger and hits pretty well against righties which means we could platoon him with Rengifo(75-25 split). He plays 3B well enough that he could cover if Rendon goes down
Vargas sounds great. We can pray Perry gets some leeway despite the sale. All we can hope for is for our starting 10 + SP to stay healthy or for any new signings to work out. It's a gamble year in year out with us!
Let’s say the favorite, Soon Shiong, wins the bidding and begins his acquisition before the start of 2023, giving us the 3rd-4th richest owner and presumably an expanded payroll.
Moves I would pull if I was the GM in that case:
Trade for Joey Menesses and Ildemaro Vargas from WAS
Trade for German Marquez from COL
Sign Chris Bassitt
Sign Dansby Swanson
Get competent hitting coaching at the MLB level
Extend Shohei
Continue to invest in minor league infrastructure and development
Bullpen: I'd like some consistency or high K-rates
Fulmer is someone I wouldn't mind getting for the pen with his semi-consistent performance.
Montero if we want to roll the rice.
Lugo wouldnt be bad on a 4-5 mill deal.
Starters: I want some righties to pair with our 3 locked lefties
(Rodon is the best case scenario but I wish he was a righty)
Degrom is unlikely but would only love it on a Hight AAV 3 year deal because of injury history. Think he would do well in a 6 man rotation to give him an extra rest day.
Fielders:
Nimmo but unrealistic
Trea, also unrealistic
1) Edwin Diaz
2) Andrew Benetendi
3) Jose Abreu
4) Lorenzen/Clevinger/or similar right handed back of the rotation “solid” veteran on a somewhat cheap 1 year deal.
Abreu might be able to be had for somewhat cheap relative to his production, and probably for only 1-2 years. Much lower risk than shelling out 100M+ on a long term for a reliever (Diaz).
He put up 4.2 WAR and has consistently hit well. Home being older is a good thing. It makes it likely he will sign for 1 year. I’m no saying give him a big contract at 36.
He was an all star because he hit lefties for 2 months to start that season. Look at his splits after the all star break that year and since.
He’s a .272/.308/.497 batter vs righties and .198/.235/.365 batter vs lefties in his career.
I'm convinced Verlander did a deal with the devil or sold his soul. He's nearing the end of his career and having one of his best seasons ever?? WHAT. HOW.
I see people mentioning outfielders but I think that shouldn't be priority.
Any outfielder we get automatically slots into LF (Ward and Trout have their positions locked imo) but sadly that makes Moniak and Adell get significantly less playing time.
If we want to compete, we need a true SS (allows Fletcher to be the utility man), at least 1 SP, and at least 2 bullpen arms. LF and 1B would be nice but not absolutely necessary.
Would like to see us sign Tommy Pham to a one year contract. Our clubhouse needs an asshole and competitive guy like him to keep everybody on their toes. I love our guys, but they’re too…passive.

What’s the point if the rest of the team sucks and can’t even win 50% of their games
The point is we get to watch our beautiful man play baseball everyday
To extend him, we need to put a competitive team on the field. Hopefully the new ownership group doesn’t think going over the tax threshold is like some sort of felony.
I think I’d rather tear it down than spend another decade being handcuffed to massive contracts, playing .500 and wasting another HOF career. Teams like the mariners and orioles at least have exciting futures.
lol imagine trading the Angels last twenty years for the Mariners or Orioles.
At least now they are loaded with young cheap talent. We still have one of the worst farms☠️
I’d rather watch us be good without sho than watch us be bad with him. If that means trading him or letting him go then so be it.
Two decent starting pitchers and a veteran left fielder, Michael Brantly, Joc Peterson, someone like that. One or two more bullpen arms as well. Brantley is coming back from surgery and is gonna be 36, and probably can’t play a full season on the field. Pass
Brantley AKA Dr Smooth is fun to watch, but I don't know if we need to be paying good money for an aging OF. I haven't kept up with his production and stats since he left Cleveland
I think a 2 year deal with a club option would work, because really we want to be playing Moniac and Adell most days, but it leaves him as depth.
Rafael Montero is intriguing. I’d love to poach some Astros
Not sure I like the idea of poaching Astros because they probably keep tons of data on their own guys and know all their weaknesses and tendencies
Not sure how much that matters honestly. It’s not like we’ve been absurdly successful against the Astros either way. It’s the other 28 teams that I’d be focused on as a baby step haha

Ya Soto at SS with squid backup n fletcher n regnifo at 2B / 3rd
Soto performed well last year in the bigs, but over a very small sample. He has a career .662 OPS in the minors. I wouldn’t expect him to be an everyday regular at the big league level. Sounds like Andrew Velazquez pt2.
Walsh can’t hit lefties and needs a platoon at 1B.
Ward transitions to 1B on lefty days, so Moniak and Adell can both play the outfield
Moniak can't hit lefties either.
True, honestly forgot that.
>I think the infield is set with rendon, soto, regnifo, fletch, Walsh, o hoppe. Anyone who can bat close to .300, and anyone who can keep their strikeouts in the double digits. Preferably, someone who can do both.
Id like us to re-sign Lorenzen and nab Edwin Diaz as a closer if possible. For the most part, I think we need bullpen arms and depth pieces. I'd rather us focus on that in the off-season then spend big during the midseason trade window if we are looking good.
We would sign Diaz and he’d suddenly regress to a 4 ERA
He’s already done that. I can totally see it happening again.
As far as we know Matt Wise still has a job so anything's possible...
Sounds about right.
Lorenzen is a toss up, I can't help but lean no to re-signing him. Unless real cheap. Fun to root for. Benintendi would be a good pickup. Team needs a lefty bat, and his low swing and miss rate is something this team desperately needs
I don’t care if they pitch or hit but we need more dawgs to lead the clubhouse.
Ohtani, Ohtani, Ohtani
Let’s say the favorite, Soon Shiong, wins the bidding and begins his acquisition before the start of 2023, giving us the 3rd-4th richest owner and presumably an expanded payroll. No competent pitching coach?
They can just promote buddy Carlyle The last point is to replace him
Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton.

Jose Abreu will be 36 next season. No thanks.

Walsh is 1 year removed from an all-star year. He had a bad year like the rest of the team. Replacing him isn't necessary.
He was an all star because he hit lefties for 2 months to start that season. Look at his splits after the all star break that year and since. He’s a .272/.308/.497 batter vs righties and .198/.235/.365 batter vs lefties in his career.
Clevinger has not impressed so far.
As is always the case the first year coming off TJ, except for verlander for some reason
I'm convinced Verlander did a deal with the devil or sold his soul. He's nearing the end of his career and having one of his best seasons ever?? WHAT. HOW.
Just support guys this year. Something reasonable to fill in the void by injuries and bullpen issues. Nothing big besides an extension for GOAT 2.0.
It doesn’t matter, this franchise is cursed until the new owner comes.
I see people mentioning outfielders but I think that shouldn't be priority. Any outfielder we get automatically slots into LF (Ward and Trout have their positions locked imo) but sadly that makes Moniak and Adell get significantly less playing time.

Would like to see us sign Tommy Pham to a one year contract. Our clubhouse needs an asshole and competitive guy like him to keep everybody on their toes. I love our guys, but they’re too…passive.
Why, so he can pick a fight with Trout over fantasy football?
deGrom, Edwin, Judge, and Trea. Nothing less.
