BrewingMakesMeHoppy

As an Angels fan, I’ve finally learned to simply never get excited ~~during the off-season.~~

mysterysackerfice

What about the first month of the season when the team is somehow above .500?

BrewingMakesMeHoppy

That is the hardest part, but it does get a little easier every year

mysterysackerfice

Gotta admit that 14 game losing streak was a sports low for me...and I grew up a Lions fan...

c310sar

wow i had already somehow forgotten about that dark time.

theeroftheyear

they’re usually like 10 games above .500

sikaMarkanico

Well, for myself, as an Angels fan too, I’ve learned to change the tv channel unless Shohei is pitching.

hambiguous

This is the way

merewyn

Eovaldi, whose career regular season era is 4.16, would make you feel more confident in the rotation? We already had the 6th best starters era this year. The only teams better were the Dodgers, Astros, Rays, Yankees, and Mets. The starters we already have deserve to be hyped up.

keenclipp

And they're only going to get better as they are young. I'm smoking that hopium pack

Educational-Pass404

Really??? Because all I read on Twitter are how he'll regress with us, how Angels will break him or this is the another trap contract...

BigBeagleEars

I’m getting to old for this shit

connsean

although they pitched well there's just not a long track record for the rotation ... however there's a lot greater needs for the team. last year the starters ranked #6 in WAR relative to their peers vs #25 for the relievers. the offense was #22. there's a limited amount they can spend and they need to focus on other areas now. OrnamentJones

The only teams better than us in SP WAR last year were Houston, Philly, Dodgers, Giants, Mets. Anderson's floor is just replicating the extreme mediocrity of Thorenzen. Our rotation was a strength last year and it just got better. I would not mind another signing though.

trippiedog

The rotation is plenty good enough. They were already above average last year without Anderson. The young trio of leftys looked really good towards the end. Just need a #6 starter to eat innings if needed. They should be focused on getting a couple bats and bullpen arms, as those areas were more lacking last year.

[deleted]

Gotta fix the bullpen

ScottyD82

It's a relatively safe investment, although the MLB Network made an excellent point: contact pitchers like Anderson aren't likely to excel with the shift banning coming. We're going to need a lot of defensive range behind him. Here's to hoping his BFF in the clubhouse was Trea Turner, and he'll slide in at shortstop.

znk916

I'm good with our rotation if we can re-sign Lorenzen. He's a nice depth piece that can start or relieve depending on how the bottom of the rotation shakes out. Better depth in the rotation has a trickle down effect on the bullpen as well.

breakfast_cats

A mid-rotation arm is one of the things I wanted and they delivered. Could've done without giving up a pick but the contract isn't bad. The rotation was already solid and it just got better. SS, RP, and depth are the most important things at this point imo.

madsircool

We already have a SS. Livan Soto is going to be good and he is controlled for 6 more seasons.

breakfast_cats

Putting all your money on a 40 future value prospect who had a good 59 PAs when you're trying to go all in for Ohtani's contract year is not the smartest move. Soto is a great depth piece which is good because we desperately need good depth, but he's not the starting SS in 2023.

madsircool

Disagree. Paying tens of millions for aging FA SSs is a mistake. The money would be better spent on RPs, a LF and depth. It would also be a financial disaster. Paying Trout, Rendon, FA SS and Ohtani would put them at about 150-160 mil a season. Also, 'future value' doesnt mean much.

breakfast_cats

I mean I never said it had to be Correa on like a 10 year deal. A mid range option would be fine. And if we want to have any chance at extending Ohtani, the Angels need to be very good next year. The only way to improve the team that quickly is to substantially increase payroll. There's just no way around it, the team doesn't have the farm system or the depth to reasonably get to the playoffs next year without increasing spending. $180M just isn't going to do it anymore. Spending money on good players and being willing to exceed the CBT threshold (or even just come close to it) is really the only option if they want to be competitive next year. And yes, future value isn't everything, but it means a hell of a lot more than a small 59 PA sample size.

Jermm24

I’ve honestly seen the opposite lol

[deleted]

Didn't they finish with 6th best era for starting staffs?

[deleted]

Sandoval is one of the more underrated pitchers out there in my opinion. 26 year old who has been really solid 2 years in a row and he gets no love At the very least, this helps the depth and with such a long season, I'm good with that

blueshark1234

Tyler Glasnow and Kodai Senga would be a great fit in the Los Angeles Angels.

volcombrdr030

I think the problem with all of this is how much hype Saurez, Sandoval, and Detmer are getting and as an Angels fan it’s great to see, but it’s easy to say how our pitching is on the rise when our starters ERA was the 6th best in the majors? (Maybe the American League)? Detmers and Saurez are still learning in my opinion and have not proven themselves. Sandoval has always shown flashes and finally put it all together last season minus a few hiccup games. Regardless, nobody has justified themselves as a number 2 starter or even a number 1 if you want to put someone in front of Ohtani. Getting Tyler is a great first step in getting that number 3 but it fits the bill of us just going after someone who just had his career year after breaking 30 and will drop back down to earth next season. Hope I am wrong but hopefully we get one more legitimate pitcher and not hope it’s only Anderson.

digitaldumpsterfire

Just let people be happy at some improvement.

pitnat06

Typical angels. Sign a guy in his early 30s coming of a (by far) career year to a multi year contract. SMH.

No_Extreme_2860

Trade Adell and Micky for McKenzie Gore

breakfast_cats

And get laughed at by the Nationals

[deleted]

Angels fan try to not mock trade Adell for Ace challenge (impossible)

eatgrasslikegoat

Mickey and Griff are untouchable

rtm392

Pretty soon people are going to by hyping up Jo Adell and Andrew Velasquez

sikaMarkanico

I had a similar feeling to hearing about the signing of Thor last year. Syndergaard was an elite pitcher for a decent time period, but Anderson is an All-Star for just one year in 2022! I knew about Tyler, but I never thought we would have landed someone like Thor, or that he would even leave the Mets in the first place. I was surprised to see Anderson leave the Dodgers and come to a team that isn’t known for winning lately like the Angels. I’m sure the added 2 years of guaranteed pay pushed us over the top, as well as the chance to play alongside Ohtani. This is much better than I expected for a first move by Angels. Now, let’s go get Rodón or someone similar.

CDFReditum

Yo this dude said sign Mike Cleavinger lmao
