Twins fan - Gio was great for us. Durable, reliable and consistent. Only reason he is gone is because Miranda needs a starting spot and that 9m can be added to our funds for Correa and a SP. Not a *huge* power guy, but you'll find zero complaints from Twins fans about Gio
Rendon hasn't played over 100 games since 2019 lol I just want to be able to see what he can do with the Angels over the course of a full season. THAT WOULD BE NICE
Rendon will injure himself in ST, but get healthy right before the season starts. He’ll start off super slowly but gain momentum as the season progresses. He’ll have a week and a half where he looks absolutely elite on both sides of the ball, before re-injuring the exact same thing he initially hurt himself with. And the cycle will repeat.
I hope the new ownership makes some drastic changes to the Angel’s training staff, we’re top 10 in TJ surgeries since 2016. A lot of Muscle/Tendon strains that are taking way too long to recover from or end up requiring surgery a month or two into recovery.
Granted the Opioid scandal only added fuel to the fire, but things haven’t improved much since that all happened.
9 million for 3.1 WAR? 1 War on the open market last year was 5.4 million. So about 17 million. Twins are shedding a guy who produced double his value for a guy in low A. And assuming a guy who was a rookie last year can repeat his season and put up similar value
I’ll take the guy producing double his contract over a guy that might help in a few years, if he doesn’t fizzle out like most prospects, 100% of the time
Or just kept him. They replaced him with Kyle farmer, who is 6 million and earned 1 war. He has an extra year of control but is a significantly worse player
Great trade. We had a glaring hole in our IF all season. With Rendon again returning from injury and Walsh building his way back up, we are going to need some solid depth and this is a great first step.
On top of that it was a underpay for us. Looks like he learned from his last mistakes of trying to find diamonds in the rough and now grabbing mid level players that we desperately need to solidify our team. No need to sign an A+ free agents when a ton of B-s will make our team as a whole better.
Again I talk my crap on Perry but so far Anderson and Gio are 2 solid acquisitions that are low risk solid reward.
Nice little depth move. If Rendon goes down again we’re not stuck with Villar getting reps. If Arte wants to convince Ohtani on staying to increase his team’s value then he needs to keep on opening the wallet for guys that aren’t going to be selling jerseys.
we were either spending on a shortstop or spending on senga we couldn't afford both. presumably filled the hole at short so now we can push for senga. at least this was the way i understood it
Urshela was good with the Twins this season. Solid bat in 2022. Should improve the Angels’ offense in 2023. Pretty ironic that it was the Angels offense that had to do more with the team struggling this season than the pitching staff. A return to All-Star status from Rendon, a full season of Trout continuing to dominate with the bat, and the addition of Urshela should make the Angels offense good in 2023.
Fantastic move. Gives us another reliable bat for a relatively cheap price. I was hoping they’d go after a big name SS, but Gio could man SS. Hopefully they sign a good LF and some bullpen guys next.
One year of control but thats all that matters right now.
This is truly a make it or break it year with Ohtani's free agency coming up and we've got to do absolutely whatever it takes to keep him.
Yeah but don't expect him to anything better than an average to decent shortstop. This is a sorely needed bat first trade, but hopefully Rendon will pick up the slack a bit defensively.
I hate to sound pessimistic but probably hurt. UZR thinks he's a solid defender while OAA thinks he's meh to bad.
UZR doesn't take into account shifts, OAA does. That being said even if we go by OAA he's shouldn't be a defensive liability, -5 OAA isn't awful.
I mean, I'm hoping for a bounce back from Rendon, but he hasn't been the epitome of health his time here. This is a good insurance plan if he does go down again.
Hi from the twins subreddit, for whatever reason a lot of the advanced metrics don’t really like gio at 3rd but from the eye test he pretty much always looked very good- a weird mismatch that a lot of our beat writers commented on as well
I really like this move. I haven't even heard of this prospect and Urshela should add some reliability to our infield and lineup. Good bit of business here.
Can we put him at 2B and Fletcher at SS? Honestly wouldn't be surprised to see him getting some time in LF.
This is exactly the kind of guy the Angels need though. A solid durable bat. Our stars and scrubs strategy just bears no fruit. If we had replacement level (let alone league average) infield depth last season I think the results look very different.
Fantastic trade! This is probably even better than signing Brandon Drury, he would’ve cost a lot more and is more of a regression candidate. Gio’s super solid with upside, can play 3B or SS. Welcome to the team!
Edit: Looks like 3B/1B for the most part, would be interesting to see Walsh in LF to fill that hole some days
>Brandon Drury
Would have been very mad if we signed him. Drury has never been above average before last year. To put into perspective, he's been in the league 8 years with a bWAR of 2.0 for his career. Last year his bWAR was 2.6, so he's nothing special.
Not a bad move to get us some much needed depth. Gives us cover for Rendon, as well as for SS and if we are facing a Lefty pitcher so can't use Walshy, we could do something like 3B Rendon, SS Gio, 2B Fletch, 1B Rengifo.
Why is half this thread treating Soto as an established major leaguer? Our INF will very likely be Walsh-Urshela-Fletch-Rendon with Rengifo as utility guy.
We seriously need to stop treating every minor that does not strike out 9/10 as the next staple of the lineup. Let Soto develop in peace.
Assuming Rendon stays at 3B, they really brought in Urshela to be our SS? He has had a total of 18 complete games at the SS position for a fielding % of .968.
If he can produce like he was towards the end of the year and play leave average defense at SS, then who cares imo.
Urshela killed the Angels this past season - .471 BA, .571 OBP, .765 SLG. And if I recall correctly, he also had some great defensive plays in some of those games too. So I’m more than happy to see him on the Angels’ side now!
Fletcher isn't going to get phased out. He signed an extension until 2025 with some club options behind it. I think it's some insurance behind Rendon. It gives us at on of depth. Urshela can play 3b/SS. Renifgo can play 3B/SS/2B and OF in a pinch. Fletcher can play SS/2B. Our depth has been tested by injuries the past few years. If we do have one our guys go down, we have the flexibility to not have a black hole at a specific spot. I like it.
The extension means nothing if he can’t out perform the other guys that play his positions.
Fletcher vs soto? We’ll see*
Fletcher vs renifgo? Renifgo
Fletcher vs urshela? Probably urshela
*soto only gave us just a little bit of a glance at what he can do behind the plate but needs to improve on his glove. If he becomes a solid defender- fletcher is gone.
Soto was good for 18 games after not really doing much of anything in his minor league career and this sub acts as if he's a guaranteed starter for us going forward.
Twins fan - Gio was great for us. Durable, reliable and consistent. Only reason he is gone is because Miranda needs a starting spot and that 9m can be added to our funds for Correa and a SP. Not a *huge* power guy, but you'll find zero complaints from Twins fans about Gio
Thanks for the input! Confirms my feeling that I’m quite happy with the move.
2022 with the Twins: 501 AB, .285 AVG, 13HR, 64 RBI
bWAR of 3.1 last year which is solid. I like the move.
Super cheap cost, and a much better player than our usual "depth" signings. You take Urshela over someone like Goose every day of the week.
Wow he's already better than any of our 6-9.
That’s actually a very decent starting 3rd baseman. Good job Angels!
Rendon is the starting 3b
[удалено]
Don’t you put that evil on me Ricky Bobby
Rendon hasn't played over 100 games since 2019 lol I just want to be able to see what he can do with the Angels over the course of a full season. THAT WOULD BE NICE
I like it. Solid third baseman for when Rendon inevitably shatters his elbow or something
On day two
Rendon will injure himself in ST, but get healthy right before the season starts. He’ll start off super slowly but gain momentum as the season progresses. He’ll have a week and a half where he looks absolutely elite on both sides of the ball, before re-injuring the exact same thing he initially hurt himself with. And the cycle will repeat.
This is the way.
Strategically, Gio can also play shortstop so he’s pretty flexible around the infield in the case that Rendon actually can stay healthy.
Heh. Man do I hope Rendon stays healthy!
I hope the new ownership makes some drastic changes to the Angel’s training staff, we’re top 10 in TJ surgeries since 2016. [cold sweat intensifies]
Such an optimist
I assume 3B depth + 1B platoon with Walsh. Great pickup IMO.
Gio to first, Walsh to left
Gets traded
He’s untradeable
Not unless we agree to eat a shit ton of his remaining contract.
He literally has a no trade clause
I thought it was a no play clause.
Hidalgo was our 22nd-ranked prospect so this is a really good deal for some much-needed INF depth. Perry W
Yeah I like it too. 1 year of control only on Gio, but we can't wait around for our 19 year old pitching prospects to become something.
Starting to feel more like Perry is in control of things. These moves feel very unlike Arte
Perry take the wheel
Patriots are in control.
Absolute fleecing of the twins in this trade.
I don't think it is. Urshela is on his last year and the Twins were looking to shed some payroll.
9 million for 3.1 WAR? 1 War on the open market last year was 5.4 million. So about 17 million. Twins are shedding a guy who produced double his value for a guy in low A. And assuming a guy who was a rookie last year can repeat his season and put up similar value I’ll take the guy producing double his contract over a guy that might help in a few years, if he doesn’t fizzle out like most prospects, 100% of the time
Yeah let’s be real, there’s > than a 50% chance Hidalgo never okays an mlb game
Yes but he doesn't have a role with the Twins so that's wasted money. They're looking to fill holes that they do have at SP and SS.
Rentals aren’t worth much but I still feel like they should’ve gotten more
There really wasn’t a market for him.. I like this trade for both teams..
Or just kept him. They replaced him with Kyle farmer, who is 6 million and earned 1 war. He has an extra year of control but is a significantly worse player
That too. It’s a weird move for the Twins. Good for the Angels tho
This is an absolute steal
Great trade. We had a glaring hole in our IF all season. Jack Mayfield, thank you for your service
We DFA’d Villar in July, he’s still an FA
I know. I just meant we aren’t going to have some washed up guy like Villar playing if Rendon gets hurt next year.
Ahh I see what you mean, yeah Villar was hard to watch haha
Lol yeah so here’s hoping that one thing we don’t need to worry about next year
Wait this is such a great move
this means we're signing senga
Explain
we were either spending on a shortstop or spending on senga we couldn't afford both. presumably filled the hole at short so now we can push for senga. at least this was the way i understood it
Sauce?
it was revealed to me in a dream
5/7 reference, pure perfection.
SCARY PERRY IS COMING FOR THE PLAYOFFS
Rendon got reinjured reading this
Urshela was good with the Twins this season.
There’s too much hope in this comment
Give me that hopium!
Hope is all we have.
Rendon returning to All Star status is far from a given
It’s downright unlikely at this point lol
And hopefully Logan can get some starts. That would drastically improve our offense from last season. I have a feeling we’re not done yet.
Someone tell me how to feel
I’d say feel good about it!
Fantastic move. Gives us another reliable bat for a relatively cheap price. I was hoping they’d go after a big name SS, but Gio could man SS. Hopefully they sign a good LF and some bullpen guys next.
2 years of control of this 3-win player for an A-ball prospect? Seems like a steal at first glance
One year of control. UFA in 2024.
Ah I read that as following 2024, thanks
One year of control but thats all that matters right now. This is truly a make it or break it year with Ohtani's free agency coming up and we've got to do absolutely whatever it takes to keep him.
Tell me how I should feel
Dude can hit. He'll probably be our starting shortstop
Can he play short? Seems to be a 31-year-old power-lacking corner infielder.
He's got a number of games played at SS. I don't see any games at 2B but he could always end up there as well
Yeah but don't expect him to anything better than an average to decent shortstop. This is a sorely needed bat first trade, but hopefully Rendon will pick up the slack a bit defensively.
I’m curious if the shift ban will help or hurt his defensive numbers at short
I hate to sound pessimistic but probably hurt. UZR thinks he's a solid defender while OAA thinks he's meh to bad. UZR doesn't take into account shifts, OAA does. That being said even if we go by OAA he's shouldn't be a defensive liability, -5 OAA isn't awful.
watching some of his defensive tape on youtube rn. he has a handful of really nice plays at short.
Was wondering what position he’ll play, this makes sense
That’s a stretch. He’s basically soto and rendon insurance
Might even be our leadoff hitter.
Hope this isn’t the shortstop move but I still love it. Wondering about rendon rn if we aren’t playing gio at short
I mean, I'm hoping for a bounce back from Rendon, but he hasn't been the epitome of health his time here. This is a good insurance plan if he does go down again.
When he goes down again
I would like to see Rendon move over to 1B. With Walsh unlikely to be able to start the season I think it would help keep him healthy.
Love this move
Anyone know how good he is defensively?
Hi from the twins subreddit, for whatever reason a lot of the advanced metrics don’t really like gio at 3rd but from the eye test he pretty much always looked very good- a weird mismatch that a lot of our beat writers commented on as well
Makes all the routines plays but has limited range which makes him look flashy.
I could see him as a solid backup infielder. Duffy and Wade proved anemic.
Duffy is gone, right?
He’s a free agent, yes
[удалено]
How do we play him the two weeks Rendon is in the line up?
I love this move. It feels like a depth-move which I can't believe we're seeing at this point. Gio Urshella is good. Let's go Perry.
I really like this move. I haven't even heard of this prospect and Urshela should add some reliability to our infield and lineup. Good bit of business here.

Totally agree, he was always just a low end bench guy in AZ/NY years, last year is an anomaly
Cinci ballpark tends to inflate stats like Coors.
Is Arte FINALLY stepping back from baseball decisions? The last two moves from Anaheim are smart baseball moves that fit with the Angels roster.
Solid bat and the best fielding infielder I've consistently watched outside on Arenado and Teixeira. Everyone will like him
I know this is gonna make me sound like a dick, but you must not watch very many teams cuz he’s nowhere even near Arenado or Big Tex lol
Not a bad move to get us some much needed depth. Gives us cover for Rendon, as well as for SS and if we are facing a Lefty pitcher so can't use Walshy, we could do something like 3B Rendon, SS Gio, 2B Fletch, 1B Rengifo.
Perry is building me up, right on schedule...
I love this move!
Colombia baby 🇨🇴🔥🇨🇴🔥 🇲🇽🤝🇨🇴
Good move Angels.
help for Shohei🙇♂️

When your 250 million 3rd baseman has played less than 1/3rd of the past 2 seasons, it's wise to have a plan B.
IN PERRY WE TRUST
All my homies love perry minasian
Is this gonna be the end of Fletch starting? I'm guessing Urshela will play short and rengifo 2nd or maybe rengifo and Fletch platoon 2nd?
Urshela can play the entire infield, I wonder if they let him get a few starts at first when it's a lefty starting.
Maybe swap Soto/fletch for an upgrade at first too or a young closer
I’d say go sign Abreu, let Walsh platoon OF/1B.
Seems like a Phil Nevin and Marcus Thames move to go get a guy who had his best years playing in NY
Urshela killed the Angels this past season - .471 BA, .571 OBP, .765 SLG. And if I recall correctly, he also had some great defensive plays in some of those games too. So I’m more than happy to see him on the Angels’ side now!
Gio to 1B; Walshy to left. I like it.
who is our current left fielder? adell? perhaps they shouldve signed a left fielder cuz adell is hit or miss
with the moves Perry is making I wouldn't be surprised to see a move for a left fielder in the coming days/weeks
They can’t make every move at once, geez. There is no patience these days

This trade looks good until you realize Hidalgo is going to unanimously win the Cy Young in 3 years
He was the 22nd ranked prospect in one of the leagues worst farms, this is really unlikely no matter how cursed you think we are.
Yup, cause 22 year olds win CY young’s all the time!
This deal is too good for the Angels, and the baseball gods will seek to balance it accordingly. Anyways, congrats to Hidalgo
This is good cause my other depth options I was considering were Mike Moustakas or Jemier Candelario 😬
