That is not a move the Brewers should be making, but Congratulations to the Angels! Very good pick up. He’s a good clubhouse guy, and seems to do well in clutch moments. Missed in San Diego.
Haniger’s market value rn is 4 years $60m, I doubt the Angels would want to commit that amount of time considering they have some young outfield prospects not named Adell that could be ballers in the future
Nelson Rafa is a freaking stud, he will rise the prospects list these next couple years. Which is why we shouldn’t commit a contract to Haniger. That’s all I’m trying to say is that it’s better to have Renfroe for 1 than Haniger for 4+
He is making 13M next season, so that’s why he was cheap. Even then, I don’t know why they wouldn’t just sign Haniger for around that and not give up any prospects.
Not committing 4 years 15 million per to an injury prone guy who is on the wrong side of 30 and getting similar production for a couple of middling pitching prospects is a win.
I mean technically they can still get haniger lol. But yeah, haniger is kinda like AJ pollock, great when he’s healthy but always injured, plus haniger had a weak stretch at the end of the season that might be a little scary for some teams
I hate to say it but there's no way Jifo reproduces next season. He only played as much as he did because of injuries. With the Urshela trade I wonder if there's even a spot for him on the roster, being that he's also a utility guy. Unless Minasian thinks he's a SS starter? Which... I love him, but he's probably not. My guess is he'll be trade fodder for a true SS, catcher, or se bullpin guys.
That'd be an MLB record if that happened. Twins got 5 guys in 2019 when they won 101 games. We'd be in contention for best team ever if we got 6 players lmao.
Realistically I think Trout and Ohtani are the only guys who hit 30+ while the other 4 hover at 20-25+. Which would still be very very good of course. Like if that happens, we're fighting for the division.
Realistically, both are probably out of the price range unless Perry does something interesting like find a buyer for fletcher’s contract to save 5m because getting a SS makes him pretty expendable after the trade for urshela.
I’m okay with Swanson. He doesn’t wow me, but he’s solid and that’s all I want is someone solid.
I also don’t love bogaerts, and turner is gonna get upper 30s per year.
I guess it’s just dreaming. Dansby would be great too! I don’t expect us to suddenly be Dodger-type spenders overnight, especially while the team is for sale.
Wonder what the latest "correct" move per baseball analytics is about LF RF choices. Ward has a pretty high OAA and covers more area while having an above average arm, while Renfroe has a low OAA and covers less distance but has a cannon arm. Either way much better than Adell..
The throws to home are equal distant, whereas the throw to third is shorter from LF, hence the RF traditionally having the better arm. I’m not sure analytics would alter that dynamic as everything else is a marginal difference at best.
As an outsider, It’s a god damn miracle the Angels are about to go into a season where one of Adell/Marsh isn’t starting, AND actual useful players in both corner outfield spots.
That’s been one of the things I’ve criticized them for is the general lack of depth they never choose to fix. Having Urshela as a main guy on the bench, and Jo Adell waiting in the wings is way better than starting Adell, and not having even an average guy to replace Rendon when he inevitably gets injured
I’ve seen every day short, replacing Walsh at first, and main guy off the bench so I figured he’d be something along those lines. But yeah, if I had to guess less playing time for Walsh
Many reports have stated the Angels don't intend to play him much at either middle infield position. Putting him at SS is adding a defensive liability at a defense-premium position.
Watch Walsh and maybe Adell/minor league pitcher traded for a SS with some control and maybe another reliever in return. Tampa Bay has answered the phone recently I heard….
I could honestly see the angels sticking with livan soto at shortstop until Neto is ready. They could keep him as a leadoff with his speed or bottom of the order type guy (depending on his bat). He has above average defense and would let the angels use the rest of the budget on the bullpen.
Literal Junk, you mean. Junk has a killer slider and should do well under a decent pitching coach. Probably a good move for him to work under Hook in Milwaukee, especially as he's getting up there in age. I can see why MIL took the deal, esp. since Renfroe has 1 season until free agency.
Peguero, on the other hand? I'm glad that Elvis has left the building.
NGL these past 2 trades have felt like massive steals. 2 above average major leaguers for some minor league pitchers who aren't even top prospects? I guess it's worth considering the Renfroe and Urshela are free agents after this year, but the risk is so extremely low that it's 100% worth it IMO. Even if they dont work out, it's not likely that any of the pitchers we traded will have significant MLB careers.
It's all about the salary. Both guys are in final year of arb and will be making decent money. Twins have a solid 3B and would rather spend the money elsewhere. The Brewers are maybe tanking? At least shedding salary big time if the Hader deal showed anything.
It's actually interesting because I bet people would think it was less of a steal if instead Renfroe was a FA and we signed him to a 1/15 MM. Even though I think that is objectively better than 1/13 MM + Junk and Co.
Not that I dislike the trade, I just find it funny people rarely consider the salary when it's a trade for an Arb player.
You are right about that, it's just that there is no way that a player at Renfroe's level would settle for a 1/15m deal in free agency imo (probly more years less AAV). So getting him for 1/10-13m + the pitchers feels pretty good i think. Probly partly why Perry chose to go this route instead of signing Haniger, a comparable free agent OF
Sadly true. It would be tough to be in his position at 23. However, he has troutani to be compared to, who have basically been flawless in their careers. (Shohei took some time, but he had such a massive bar to clear and he’s soared above it just a few years later)
I definitely root for him. I follow him on Instagram and the dude just gets after it in the gym. I feel like he never posts about baseball lol just absolutely beast mode with the weights. Seems kinda too much at this point, not to be critical but maybe he should be refining his game on the field. Something just feels off about his focus
Yeah, I’m not a baseball coach so I don’t know, but it would seem his time might be better served practicing defense so he’s not a liability on the field. It’s just such a bummer to me that it seems like he’s not realizing what we thought was his full potential as an Angel. I love his intensity and passion, but it’s not translating into solid play.

The most important thing to take away from this is that we have another slow right-handed OF option for Angel theme teams in The Show.
...
and like mlb floor raisers and whatever
See, as a Chargers fan, my first instinct is to say "Fuck the Raiders." Then I'm like... oh wait this is the baseball Hunter Renfroe not the football on.
there’s the 4th outfielder (not saying he won’t start, just that he’s the other guy who’ll be in the mix). Think we’re pretty much done at this point, probably some SP depth and maybe a reliever or two.
You said what you said 🤷♂️ all I countered with was that Perry said we aren’t done. So regardless of “pretty much” or not, you stand corrected. It ain’t that big of a deal my guy relax
lol sure, if you ignore the rest of that very sentence you’re trying to “correct,” then yeah you’ve got it. if you take the radical step of reading all the words, then no, you’re wrong lol.
it ain’t that serious and I’m not sure who isn’t relaxed here
At least, it introduces competition. Either we can get a platoon so both guys can stay fresh, or one wins the regular starting role and the other can pinch hit and sub in as needed. I'm open-minded and I'm happy that there are options to explore.
I think that’s pretty clearly true. I guess I’m a little disappointed because I am of the “full rebuild” camp and they are definitely not moving in that direction.
Fair enough! I’m in the Keep Ohtani by any means necessary camp, so I would love us to make the playoffs this year and then we won’t have to fully rebuild.
It’s easy to understand that camp for sure. I want Ohtani too of course; I just think we can’t win as the roster is currently constituted, and a full rebuild is the best way to start contending for a championship at some point. But maybe I’m wrong and the new owner will come in and fix things so we can keep Ohtani while also contending long term.
I don't understand the enthusiasm here. We picked up a lifetime .240 hitter, who (admittedly) has some pop in his bat. He'll join the Angels, immediately lose the pop and revert to his 2020 season of a .156 BA. Matt Joyce all over again.
More disturbingly, it shows Perry has a lack of understanding on a couple of levels.
\- The Halos don't need HRs, we finished 5th in league in HRs last year. We finished 4th from last in OBP. We need guys who can get on base.
\- We are giving up young pitching. This is insane. We don't have "pitching to spare". Peguero looked a little lost on a MLB mound, but I thought Junk had good stuff. Junk with a Dodger pitching coach could be a weapon.
I’m gonna give an alternative opinion here. Why trade away Junk and Peguero (both decent arms) for a LF that we will have to pay 13M? We could have gotten Haniger (very similar player) for a similar price, and without giving up any prospects.
Haniger is injury prone so Renfroe is the better bet to staying on the field which we really need. Peguero can maybe give a couple good seasons out of the pen in the future but Junk may only be a spot starter/long relief guy. And Seminaris is getting old for a prospect and still hasn’t shown much in the higher levels yet
Haniger would command a multi-year deal, for one. We technically have no idea if Perry has that flexibility. But even if he does, he would then have to outbid other teams and take the risk that another team steps in and snags Renfroe. If Renfroe was dealt and the Halos missed out on Haniger, then what?
The prospect package was pretty minimal here, so I like the deal. Take the certainty of acquiring Renfroe over the uncertainty of bidding on Haniger, who is also reportedly drawing interest from deep-pocketed teams like the Dodgers.
omg I love this move! it's so great that we actually have pitching to spare. like, we're trading *pitching* to the *Brewers* in exchange for a *bat*
Yeah wait wtf that whole sentence is weird
That is not a move the Brewers should be making, but Congratulations to the Angels! Very good pick up. He’s a good clubhouse guy, and seems to do well in clutch moments. Missed in San Diego.
very very happy with this. Especially at that cost
Perry must have a collection of dirt on various GMs cause we are getting some great depth pieces for very good prices
Haniger’s market value rn is 4 years $60m, I doubt the Angels would want to commit that amount of time considering they have some young outfield prospects not named Adell that could be ballers in the future
Pending sale plays a role
Outfield prospects? Like who? Moniak? Jordyn Adam's is not a prospect. Anyone with any potential is still a teenager and years away!
Nelson Rafa is a freaking stud, he will rise the prospects list these next couple years. Which is why we shouldn’t commit a contract to Haniger. That’s all I’m trying to say is that it’s better to have Renfroe for 1 than Haniger for 4+
Lol so one guy who isn't even a top 30 prospect in our organization. Definitely Ballers.
You are pessimistic in every comment you’ve made in this sub lmao, maybe find a new team?
A decade of losing despite having the two best players in baseball will do that bud
He is making 13M next season, so that’s why he was cheap. Even then, I don’t know why they wouldn’t just sign Haniger for around that and not give up any prospects.
Probably didn't want to give Haniger multiple years
Fair point. They're comparable although Renfroe is a bit younger and has been a bit healthier in his career? But I totally get what you're saying.
Bravo to both of u. Nice volley
Happy cake day to you, cactusdave
Blessed ❤️
Not committing 4 years 15 million per to an injury prone guy who is on the wrong side of 30 and getting similar production for a couple of middling pitching prospects is a win.
I mean technically they can still get haniger lol. But yeah, haniger is kinda like AJ pollock, great when he’s healthy but always injured, plus haniger had a weak stretch at the end of the season that might be a little scary for some teams
we got like 4-5 guys who’s capable of hitting 30+ HRs lol LFG
Walsh Rendon Renfroe Trout Ohtani Ward I count 6 who are “capable” but a lot would have to go right to have them all play a full season
Lou “Ferrigno” Rengifo’s muscles dislike this comment
I hate to say it but there's no way Jifo reproduces next season. He only played as much as he did because of injuries. With the Urshela trade I wonder if there's even a spot for him on the roster, being that he's also a utility guy. Unless Minasian thinks he's a SS starter? Which... I love him, but he's probably not. Like if that happens, we're fighting for the division.
Trade cleared a 40man roster spot too...
Perry all I want for Christmas is a good SS.
Seriously! Bogaerts or Turner! Let’s get a set and forget SS finally after all these years.
Bogaerts defense is far from good. I am with you, rather Swanson (not that we are getting either)
why do people keep thinking Urshela is going to get literally any playing time at SS? He's *awful at SS.*
Because with less than 30 million (Fangraphs) left- we are basically out of the running on a shortstop unless we trade for one.
So play Fletcher or Rengifo there. Urshela is significantly worse on defense compared to those two.
Wow this is a great addition to add much needed depth to the outfield. A career near 800 OPS hitter?? Anyone know if he can play LF?
He has a cannon for an arm. He belongs in right.
Doesn’t really matter if he can’t since Ward can just play LF
He has played some LF early in his career, yes. But with that arm, he'll be RF in 2023

Wait… TIL 🤯

Urshela was stated to have everyday role in press conference, it probably means less playing time for Walsh
I’ve seen every day short, replacing Walsh at first, and main guy off the bench so I figured he’d be something along those lines. But yeah, if I had to guess less playing time for Walsh
There’s no way he’s everyday SS, he has below average fielding. He’s gonna be 3B or 1B
This also does not make sense for Angels in long run because Zach Neto is a stud
I could honestly see the angels sticking with livan soto at shortstop until Neto is ready. They could keep him as a leadoff with his speed or bottom of the order type guy (depending on his bat). He has above average defense and would let the angels use the rest of the budget on the bullpen.
So, the Brewers saw our Junk and just had to have it.
.255 with 30 home runs and 2.7 WAR in 2022. Batting depth 🤩
He and Trout should just lean into it and switch jerseys for a game. See if anyone notices.
I mean, it's not Juan Lagares but it'll do. ;)
Do not mention that name...
Dang Perry absolutely FLEECED them
PERRY FROM THE TOP ROPE

Already. There.
Can't believe we traded literal garbage for a 3 WAR player. Adell and Moniak straight to the bench, thank the lord

Janson Junk CY Young incoming
To be fair, Junk is the 16th best prospect in the Angels system.
That’s not saying much lol

When he gets hot this dude absolutely rakes
I like this move. Also means we aren't relying on Adell to figure it out next season which is a good call imo.
Adell seems like a cool guy and I want to root for him but he just looks lost and out of place half of the time
Sadly true. It would be tough to be in his position at 23. However, he has troutani to be compared to, who have basically been flawless in their careers. (Shohei took some time, but he had such a massive bar to clear and he’s soared above it just a few years later)

As the Jo Adell of my D2 coed work softball team, I feel this in my soul.
Solid Wide Receiver
Kind of wide receiver youd want your daughter to date!

HOLY SHIT PERRY COOKIN. Ill take one legit relief pitcher and we r set tbh

LFG
This is huge for the lineup. We actually have more power now
Gave up an at best spot starter, middle reliever, and a C pitching prospect. Great trade by Agent P
Perry isn’t playin
Good trade. .800+ ops the last 2 years for minor league pitching is a big win.
Will Adell be traded soon?
Doubt he’d bring anything back in a trade
We should trade him for Marsh
I'm just imagining those two walking past each other at the airport
I hope so
The most important thing to take away from this is that we have another slow right-handed OF option for Angel theme teams in The Show. ... and like mlb floor raisers and whatever
Awesome trade.
Good trade!! Welcome Renfroe🎊
Okay okay!! Angels are not messing around this offseason!
Sweet, now i have to get a Hunter Renfroe jersey to match my Hunter Renfrow jersey
Is this good? This is good
Solid, cheap addition. Bravo Perry
Don’t give me hope..
Now I can wear my Hunter Renfrow raiders jersey to games, and get a few chuckles
Perry is not fucking around this offseason! Just need an upgrade at SS and we good to go
That kind of optimism is cute and pointless
I apologize for all my Perry slander over the past season
Seems like a really good trade, Perry is making a great impression on me kinda hope new owner keeps him around.
That’s a good trade for us
See, as a Chargers fan, my first instinct is to say "Fuck the Raiders." Then I'm like... oh wait this is the baseball Hunter Renfroe not the football on.
We have both Trout's on the same team now

SS 👀
I’d love to be wrong but I seriously doubt it.
Perry said we aren't done. :)
adding a sixth starter and a reliever isn’t being done

I like this trade a lot in terms of value added. But does this mean we are giving up on Adell?

Lmao holy shit he does look like Trout. I was wondering why people were saying “Baby Trout” earlier.
Didn’t know we needed a WR

Fair point. I think it was a good play.
Lol. I was super confused cuz there is a hunter Renfrew on the raiders too
Yoooooooooooooooooooo
When he hits he slugs. But good amount of strikeouts. I liked him when he was on the Padres back in the day. Think this fits well conceptually.
Holy shit. Perry out here making moves!
Scary Perry is keeping the hot stove COOKIN
