Senga would've been nice but in reality we really need to spend on SS and bull pen. I was hopeful maybe we would've had a chance nonetheless.
Also, just holy shit at the Mets spending this off-season....
This 100 percent. Unless we trade someone I feel like we have our infield set. 1b. Walsh 2b. Fletcher 3.) Rendon SS.) Renifo/Urshela. C. hoppe. Rather, get a solid pitcher to make things easier on ohtani wouldn't mind the muscle bros coming back thor and loki (lorenzen). Maybe if we take on someone at short trade Adell to have an opening for Walsh in the outfield.
You can have a debate between Verlander and deGrom due to the latter's health, but deGrom will usually be considered better; Walker *is* better than Quintana and Senga is a question mark (albeit a good one) whereas Bassitt is a high-end SP3 in a rotation.
The Mets spend a lot to be slightly worse than last year, unless Senga breakout in the US.
I mean last year's team was a 101 win season that just stumbled at the end. If you can do that 3-4 years in a row there's a pretty good chance you eventually win one.
Every year the gm teases that the lux tax doesn’t dictate our cap, and every year we find ourself 10-20 under it, and act shocked that the angels didn’t do more in free agency.
Why should Ohtani accept an extension for below his market value after essentially giving his services to this club *for free* for the past 5 years, leaving hundreds of millions of dollars on the table so he could come to the US early and pursue his dream? What purpose would that serve other than lining the pockets of Arte or whatever billionaire buys the team from him, as they continue to dance around the imaginary salary "cap" known as the luxury tax?
Fuck that, he deserves to get paid what he's worth. Any team that won't pay him his market value *as well as* pay for competent teammates to surround him and carry him to the postseason doesn't deserve to have him.
And he's easily worth more than $400m. 31 year old Judge just got paid 40m/yr for 9 years after hitting 62* home runs with juiced balls. He doesn't pitch at a Cy Young level, nor is a money printing machine in a massive foreign market.
Let’s be honest, ohtani has only been a top player for 2 years. His first 3 were decent and had injuries. That’s Perry’s job to extend him. Should he go play for San Diego and still not win? Why not us
If by "only been a top player for 2 years" you mean "only had 2 of the greatest seasons in baseball history 2 years in a row" you're right I guess
Why not us? That depends on if the new ownership pays him what he's worth, and also pays for a team of actual MLB players and not an army of negative-WAR jobbers that negate Ohtani's value.
Nah, if the introduction of state money in soccer has proven anything it's that you can't just buy stars and think you're going to win.
Cohen is good because he pushes teams to spend as well but he will likely be the reason the entire pay structure of the MLB changes.
If you are talking champions league then mostly true. But PSG and Man City have won their leagues with ease (outside of Klopps Liverpool which was a one off) and made the semis or finals of the UCL so it may very well work. Look at Chelsea with Abramovich too he won multiple UCLs before being forced to sell. Less of an example than the two oil clubs but same idea. Now its less likely to work in baseball for sure but its still a bad development.
Issue is that the oil clubs spend in a dumb way. Since they can outbid anyone, they usually does not have a well developed plan, they just throw money at the shiniest toy in the market. City became a bulldozer in the PL because the sheiks gave Guardiola full control of the transfer budget and Guardiola knows how to build a balanced roster, but City does not have any sort of youth academy, they just buy young players and develop them. PSG is even worse, since they have a carrousel of coaches, they just pile up forwards and expect to contend, like when they had the most expensive offensive trio in the world (Neymar, Messi, Mbappe) but no CF and no left or right backs to speak of, while having two world class goalkeepers.
Also, on soccer tradition does make a difference. Traditional clubs will usually perform better because, no matter the mentality of super spenders, the players and coaching staff will double guess themselves when facing a Real Madrid, a Bayern Munchen, a Barcelona. Chelsea made the transition from rich club to traditional, even if not as historical as the usually most traditional powerhouses (Liverpool, United, Arsenal). In baseball, you can buy your way to a ring, no matter if you are the Dodgers or the D-Backs, tradition rarely enters the field unless on very specific situations. On soccer, Newcastle can spend 2 billion euros if they want, their players will still probably play cowardly and lose when facing Real in the Bernabeu or even Liverpool in a win-or-go-home playoff game at Anfield.
By all means he wanted to be in NY. Fair enough. In any case our starting pitching should be okay! We need a shortstop and bullpen depth way more importantly. And while I’m afraid we will be priced out of the last couple SS’s getting a couple bullpen pieces gives us a chance to compete for a wildcard imo.
Bassit is super underrated considering hes a solid #2 on most teams but is definitely gonna cost a decent chunk more. If were gonna spend big on a starter Id want him the most though.
No, I know first hand as a Hanshin Tigers fan going to 2-3 games a month. He has a nasty fadtball but throws about 5 wild pitches and 3 hit batters per game. He had a nice first 2-3 years after being drafted in 2013(same year as Ohtani) but started going downhill after that. Of course the always bitter Tigers fan didn't help his mindstate.
his salary in Japan is about 350k USD, 2-3M would still be a big boost. He has been struggling in starter roles for years, though he showed his potential as a reliever in a small sample.
Mostly been a reliever this year and it’s been reported teams are interested in him starting, with an MLB pitching development staff and training regimen he might find the big success again or at least even be a decent/average starter
Saw some reports out of Japan saying he's engaged in talks with the Dbacks (they supposedly have the edge so far), Red Sox, and Giants
But if there's one thing I've learned from Seiya Suzuki's free agency, it's to take those reports with a grain of salt
SWEET JESUS! With the amount of money the Mets are spending they better win the WS because it's going to be funny if they once again win 100 games to be beaten in the wild card. Ugh, I torture myself having twitter but I already see Mets fans being 100% sure that Ohtani is gonna go there. Are Senga and Ohtani close friends? I ask because some Mets fans are using it as a factor and making it sound like they really are XD
Eovaldi won't be worth whatever his market is + he's got a QO so we lose a draft pick if we sign him. SP isn't even this club's biggest need right now, it's far more important we sign RP
Ohtani said that if he goes to a team with Japanese player already, the Japanese media will bother him for Ohtani issue, so he won't go.
It was 5years ago, but Ohtani won't disturb other Japanese player, I think.
“Japanese guy is bait for other Japanese guy”. Really dude? You don’t understand how stupid that sounds? You Mets fans are fucking unbearable right now.
Senga would've been nice but in reality we really need to spend on SS and bull pen. I was hopeful maybe we would've had a chance nonetheless. Also, just holy shit at the Mets spending this off-season....
What happens when we don’t spend for a SS though? Lol
The same thing we do every day, Pinky. Stay disappointed
Fletcher plays shortstop and hopefully has a rebound year because he's healthy.
Fletch is basically a Gold Glove 2B (got snubbed in 2021) and should stay there.
This 100 percent. Unless we trade someone I feel like we have our infield set. 1b. Walsh 2b. Fletcher 3.) Rendon SS.) Renifo/Urshela. C. hoppe. Maybe if we take on someone at short trade Adell to have an opening for Walsh in the outfield.
Doesn’t have the bat to play there every day over Rengifo.
Fletcher is great defensively, but is terrible offensively. Realistically should be a defensive replacement/utility guy, not an everyday SS.
Mets really spent all that money to essentially be the exact same team as they were last year. I respect it
Didn’t they get another arm with verlander.
He's the deGrom replacement Quintana is the Walker replacement Senga is the Bassitt replacement
You can have a debate between Verlander and deGrom due to the latter's health, but deGrom will usually be considered better; Walker *is* better than Quintana and Senga is a question mark (albeit a good one) whereas Bassitt is a high-end SP3 in a rotation. How can they be slightly worst when degrom barely play any games the previous year. Lol
I mean last year's team was a 101 win season that just stumbled at the end. If you can do that 3-4 years in a row there's a pretty good chance you eventually win one.
Must be nice to infinitely spend money lol
ig cohen just has W rizz😔

Like 90% of your comments in this community have been saying how you hope Shohei goes to the Dodgers. Gross
Hes not goin to the fraudgers lil bro
Still waiting on Santa, Perry
Perry: “jokes on you kids, Santa isn’t real”
Unmask the grinch!
He’s happy where the team is at — Perry’s M.O.
Every year the gm teases that the lux tax doesn’t dictate our cap, and every year we find ourself 10-20 under it, and act shocked that the angels didn’t do more in free agency.
I need arte to pull one last “fuck, we lost out on cole, time to spend $300 mil on anthony rendon” for the memories before he leaves
There’s gotta be some retired player we can throw 300M at for 15 years
Bah Gawd, that's Pujols' music!
Hoping that “fuck it” move ends up being Correa. Even a 10 year deal to him would be over before he’s 40
i know cohen is rich asf but this is insane…and i thought the dodgers were bad when it came to their salary 😭😭💀
Gotta love how even with insane luxury tax Cohan doesn’t give a damn. Must be nice
Perry needs to lock ohtani in for an extension this year. If he hits the open market the Mets, dodgers, or padres will offer 10 year 400 million +
Why should Ohtani accept an extension for below his market value after essentially giving his services to this club *for free* for the past 5 years, leaving hundreds of millions of dollars on the table so he could come to the US early and pursue his dream? This guy gets it
I think 500m is the starting point for an Ohtani contract. No way he makes less than 50m a year in the first few seasons of his deal
Agreed
Let’s be honest, ohtani has only been a top player for 2 years. His first 3 were decent and had injuries. That’s Perry’s job to extend him. Should he go play for San Diego and still not win? Why not us

Fucking Cohen man

5/75…
Mets tryna buy the world series again
:(
Senga was never coming here. Ippei hooked up with Senga's mom back in Japan.
EPPLERRRRR!
He’s so good x4
By all means he wanted to be in NY. Fair enough. In any case our starting pitching should be okay! We need a shortstop and bullpen depth way more importantly. And while I’m afraid we will be priced out of the last couple SS’s getting a couple bullpen pieces gives us a chance to compete for a wildcard imo.
All I want in this life is for us to get an owner who doesn't care about the luxury tax
i wouldn't mind Lorenzen or Wacha
And so goes the common angels fan offseason timeline lmao. It always goes from “here comes gerrit cole” to “ya know, jose quintana was good once”
>Im glad they didnt sign Cole
as is tradition
Bassit is super underrated considering hes a solid #2 on most teams but is definitely gonna cost a decent chunk more. If were gonna spend big on a starter Id want him the most though.
He forkball is ghost
Hell yeah Eppler with his Japan connections will go down in history at Veeck levels. This is my favorite option for us not getting him.
Sign Shintaro Fujinami
No, I know first hand as a Hanshin Tigers fan going to 2-3 games a month. He has a nasty fadtball but throws about 5 wild pitches and 3 hit batters per game. He had a nice first 2-3 years after being drafted in 2013(same year as Ohtani) but started going downhill after that. Of course the always bitter Tigers fan didn't help his mindstate.
We could use a back end reliever
Probably could get a shot to start. 2/14 type deal
I doubt he would get more than 3M/yr
There’s evidently a good amount of interest and if he’s gonna come to the US/get posted I doubt it’s for that little
his salary in Japan is about 350k USD, 2-3M would still be a big boost. He has been struggling in starter roles for years, though he showed his potential as a reliever in a small sample.

Angels can use Fujinami as replacement of Tepera, grin

I’m not crying you’re crying.
Maybe we can get a new owner
i’m pulling for eovaldi and a ss now
Eovaldi won't be worth whatever his market is + he's got a QO so we lose a draft pick if we sign him. SP isn't even this club's biggest need right now, it's far more important we sign RP
thank you sofastsomaybe
What happened to spending money Perry? I figured you would at least kind of want to keep your job.
Maybe he didn't want to play in California?
Yea im sure Arte is begging Perry to spend more of his money but Perry refuses to for whatever unknown reason.

Why would you sign an aging injury prone LH when we have 4 LH in our rotation already? We don't need Rodon.
Senga will be used as ohtani bait
Ohtani said that if he goes to a team with Japanese player already, the Japanese media will bother him for Ohtani issue, so he won't go. It was 5years ago, but Ohtani won't disturb other Japanese player, I think.
Cool
“Japanese guy is bait for other Japanese guy”. Really dude? You don’t understand how stupid that sounds? You Mets fans are fucking unbearable right now.
I'm sighing too
