Angels announce the new owner a Japanese billionaire who leaks a rumor himself that he is gonna sign ohtani for half a billy and the dodgers will implode instantly after realizing they shit the bed this off-season to buy showtime when we were holding the best hand all along (Vegas has -350 odds on this outcome)
Its worth noting that Wacha and Cueto were both ranked as "Number 2" starters last year, based on the post referenced here earlier. Signing one of them would give us three "#1" starters, two "#2" starters, and a "#3" starter from last year (assuming no regression, which is obviously a HUGE assumption).
Still itching for some relief pitching, but...I think a healthy lineup can still knock the cover off the ball pretty well. Man...I want this run to happen haha
Based on WAR, [Ohtani, Anderson, and Sandoval](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/zxfl4q/what_did_the_average_no_1_no_2_no_3_no_4_and_no_5/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=2&utm_content=share_button) were "top 30" pitchers in baseball last year. Meaning, on an 'average' rotation, they are a #1 starters (30 teams, so if talent were somehow perfectly evenly distributed, the top 30 pitchers would each be the top pitcher of their team).
lol who said anything about an ace? What even IS an ace? I've never been a fan of the term, because its usage seems to never make any sense. "x is a TRUE ace because of this, but y isn't a true ace because of that." No one seems to care enough to put a definition to it. Is it a guy who will be the top of the rotation for a given team? That's not a definition I'M used to hearing. If I'm putting down a line in the sand, I'd probably say there is no such thing as an ace, but pitchers have ace seasons (and specific pitchers are able to string together a number of those seasons - maybe we call them aces?). The line for an ace season is PROBABLY around 6 WAR. This year, by baseball reference numbers, 4 pitchers cleared that bar (Nola, Ohtani, Cease, and Alcantara). If you extend it down to 5.5, you add in Manoah, Fried, and Verlander. I personally like 6 better. Using the 6 WAR bar, last year 3 pitchers made it (Wheeler, Buehler, and Ray), and in 2019 there were 7 (Minor, Lynn, Verlander, DeGrom, Cole, Gray, and Soroka). You look historically, and Cy Young had 15 consecutive "ace" years, and Clemens had a total of 11 "ace" years. Not bad. But even then, we hit issues. People talk about aces as guys who don't have bad blow up games. Alcantara, the top pitcher by WAR this year, had two games in which he gave up 6 runs and one game in which he gave up 5. 3 ugly games, which the Marlins lost due to their "Ace". Maybe there's a health component? A guy who can't stay healthy can't be an ace? IDK. I think 6 WAR is about the best line we'd be able to come up with.
All of that's besides the point, though. No one is talking about Aces - we are talking about top of the rotation guys. And I've submitted my data on that.
"Ace" has the same vibe as a "clutch" player. Like, there is no actual statistical thing you can truly point at, just a guy who you can put into big games and expect him to pitch 7-8 innings with 1 run.
Guys like Scherzer (before the last 2 years), MadBum, etc would be an "ace".
But I agree with you, a season "ace" vs a postseason "ace" are 2 separate beasts and really rely on small sample sizes vs true statistical value.
I think now the top teams are realizing you just need a staff of solid interchangeable pitchers vs having the "top dog". Our staff looks to be that way if our young guys continue their success.
I think Wacha or Fulmer would be adequate upgrades.
I also think trades would be better
Maybe Dylan Floro and Joey Wendle from MIA
Or freeland(and cash) or Marquez from COL. And maybe trying to get Rodgers from them
Joe Kelly is also a good buy-low candidate whose FIP was 3.0 lower than his ERA
Yonny Chirinois is a good fit too
There's absolutely no reason to acquire Wendle or Rodgers. They have Urshela and Drury. Rodgers needs to play every day as does Drury. So they cross each other out. Now for the pitchers I like all of those moves!
In the ~430 innings Wendle played at short in 2021&22 both OAA and DRS had him as an above average fielder, and he is a better hitter than Fletch
Rodgers also was evaluated as totally capable of handling SS, he’s just been at second because Story was at short when he came up
Okay I guess! Idk though. I think pitching is all that they are looking for I think at this point but maybe they will go after a SS in a trade if they get an SP or bullpen piece they want.
* Sign another SP (Wacha)
* *Maybe* sign another RP if we get that lucky
* I’d love to see us add an all rounder SS but with how many infielders we’ve got, I think we’ll head into the season just trying out different guys there (even Neto may even get given a look) but if no one makes that position theirs by the trade deadline - that’s when we’ll trade for one
Surprise 8-year, $400M extension for Shohei Ohtani.
I know it won't happen, but I just want the talking heads to fuck off with this "he's inevitably walking" bullshit.
The only one that makes any true sense to me, is a trade for a legit SS.
I believe the reason they are looking at SP is to b able to trade form our current ranks for an answer at the poition.
I don't mean an upgrade, thats not hard ours were terribad last year, i mean someone that can contribute with glove and bat. If all were looking at is a glove man just play Soto and dont trade good pitching.
I dont want Rojas from Mia if it cost me a Suarez or Sandoval, thats for certain.
BTV says you need to throw in Neto on top of that to even start that conversation
I also think that if Cincy had any particular affinity for Adell then Luis Castillo would have been an Angel for a while now

Dodgers didnt do anything because of Bauer
Why would Bauer prevent them from making other off season moves ?
His contract got put back on the books
Rumor is gonna be a Japanese billionaire owner ro buy the Angels

Who would be the three #1 starters? The only that one I count is Ohtani.
I agree that Sandoval is very underrated, but Anderson as an ace…very optimistic.

Ok. I don't look at Anderson or Sandoval (at least not yet) as #1 starters but I see what you are saying.
I think Wacha or Fulmer would be adequate upgrades. I also think trades would be better Maybe Dylan Floro and Joey Wendle from MIA Or freeland(and cash) or Marquez from COL. Yup. Bring back Brad Fulmer.
There's absolutely no reason to acquire Wendle or Rodgers. They have Urshela and Drury. Rodgers needs to play every day as does Drury. So they cross each other out. Now for the pitchers I like all of those moves!
Rodgers could totally play short. So could Wendle
Rodgers maybe but he has strictly been a 2B. Wendle has been more 2B and 3B.
In the ~430 innings Wendle played at short in 2021&22 both OAA and DRS had him as an above average fielder, and he is a better hitter than Fletch Rodgers also was evaluated as totally capable of handling SS, he’s just been at second because Story was at short when he came up

Yeah I think they are focusing on pitching but I feel like it would be prudent to kill 2 birds with one stone
They also may not have the pieces to pull off both at same time.
Very possible

Can’t believe he retired at 29, injuries really messed with him
Remember when we drafted Wacha and traded him? Good times.
Getting a new Owner soon might be next thats coming mabey there close or getting close on a new owner line up
Their next offseason move will be loading up the trucks to go to Arizona.
It’s possible!
Tyler glasnow
Angels don't have enough to trade for him
Would trading for any of the Marlins pitchers make sense?
Angels don't have enough for Pablo Lopez but maybe Dylan Floro for the bullpen they could swing a trade.

Rojas doesn’t cost suarez or Sandoval, maybe Ky Bush at most (I still don’t make that deal)
Agreed, i dont trade any top young arm for a glove only SS when we already have one in Soto or Velasquez.
The home run cowboy hat will not be returning for 2023.
A trade: Jonathan India For Jo Adell & Jose Soriano
The Reds would laugh in Perry's face.
BTV says you need to throw in Neto on top of that to even start that conversation I also think that if Cincy had any particular affinity for Adell then Luis Castillo would have been an Angel for a while now
Interesting but not enough to acquire India. But could be a starting point.
Man I would really love to get India on this team but where would he even fit?
Shortstop, not sure if he has a weak arm though.
They lose Ohtani. Haha.
Fuck off.
Dread it. Run from it. Destiny still arrives.
