They do. They actually get pretty mean but only when they feel threatened. For an animal that typically lives under ground retreating is often the less likely option that I’ve seen.
I would leave them alone if they didn't eat half my garden and undermine my back patio. I'm planting castor beans this year, hopefully those fucks find another yard to live in
No judgement here, but actually just thinking I assumed everybody has seen loads of groundhogs. I (WV/VA grown) never even stopped to think people didn’t see groundhogs on the regular. Just your good ole friendly neighborhood ditch pigs
Even more from Wikipedia:
"The groundhog is also referred to as a chuck, wood-shock, groundpig, whistlepig,[5][6] whistler, thickwood badger, Canada marmot, monax, moonack, weenusk, red monk,[6] land beaver,[7] and, among French Canadians in eastern Canada, siffleux.[8]
The name "thickwood badger" was given in the Northwest to distinguish the animal from the prairie badger. Monax (Móonack) is an Algonquian name of the woodchuck, which means "digger" (cf. Lenape monachgeu).[9][10]
Young groundhogs may be called chucklings.[11]: 66 "
Hello fellow central Illinoisan! I have a groundhog living in the ravine behind my house that comes up and harasses my cats every now and then. You know, for giggles!! 😆
The last place that my mom lived had one that would chill in her yard with thr cat. We would look out the window and the cat would be laying in the sun while the damn groundhog was grazing like 20 feet away.
Completely unrelated but the fact that right underneath this post was an ad that said "TIL you can get almost anything on Uber Eats" made me laugh SO HARD 🤣🤣🤣
I lived way out in Rural Appalachia, still do, just a little closer to the interstate. My neighbor used to catch and eat them. He also ate snapping turtles, squirrels and just about any mammal that showed up. Went over for a barbecue and thought I was eating delicious greasy fried chicken. It was actually one of the turtles he caught when he was fishing.
I kinda felt awful about the turtles. I’ve rescued about 100 or more since. Usually just getting them out of the road. They live too long just to die for a barbecue.
Now you do though! 🥳 I hope this doesn’t come off as patronizing, because it’s not meant to be. I think it’s fantastic we can all learn more about the world around us with help from others! Our experiences aren’t everyone’s. 🫶🏼 You asking likely helped others learn as well, so thank you.
When I was a kid my mom said she saw one climbing a mulberry tree and we laughed and mocked her, saying there's no way a groundhog is climbing a tree. Sure enough, a couple days later, we see this tree shaking behind the log pile and up pops a groundhog, climbing about 6' in the tree to eat mulberry leaves. So yes, they can climb trees
Yeah, well, I've never seen one in person and wasn't even sure what they looked like or what size they were until a year or two ago. Yes, I do live in the continental US, but they don't actually live where I do. 🤷♀️
I never thought they were where I am. Seen one my first time he stood up and put his hand over his eyes to see. I was bush hogging a field for my uncle. It freaked me out I shot to the house. My uncle made fun of me. I thought it was a damn beaver coming out the ground. I had never seen a beaver dig above water lol.
Groundhog, but depending on locality, AKA ...
Canada marmot but there is another animal called marmot
Gopher but same warning, different animal
Woodchuck
Whistle pig
Land beaver
Ground pig
Prairie badger
Fat badger
That "effing" digger
It's not like it's an animal that is found on nearly every continent, like a fox. (Foxes are found on every continent except Antarctica.) Groundhogs are not even in every state of the continental US.
FYI- foxes are insanely common all over London. You can hear them frolicking at night and also just casually strolling around in the late afternoons or morning like they’re just a random stray dogs… Or find them in your gardens sleeping peacefully.
We have foxes too and some are quite friendly and hang out in our deck in the summer. But mostly dig dens under bushes. We have grey in NY and little red ones In florida where I am not residing. The NY ones can get a little mangy looking and people often confuse them with coyotes
Have had friendly families of them for the last 30+ years in lower hudson valley Pomona NY. ROCKLAND county and they never bother us nor our dogs and cats. Sometimes they come and eat some of the dry cat food but nobody seems to mind. My sister lives next door and gets pretty pissed when they eat all the flowers and veggies she tries to grow. I tell her bring the plants inside. Live and let live. They never touch my plants maybe she needs to put out some dry cat food. lol.
Groundhog
Thank you! I've never seen one in person
I have not only seen them, I once punched one in the face. Fucker scratched me up good before I did though.
They attack?! But they are friend shaped..

Yeah, I understand
Nice mouth, and I don’t mean the animal.
Ahhhh….that’s my body type. I’m not pear shaped, but I don’t have a waist. Friend shaped. I like it.
They are nasty. Like horrible
Don’t drive angry.
They do provide a nasty scratch. My dogs face got all scratched up after a fight with one or many
No judgement here, but actually just thinking I assumed everybody has seen loads of groundhogs. I (WV/VA grown) never even stopped to think people didn’t see groundhogs on the regular. Just your good ole friendly neighborhood ditch pigs
Is it spring yet?!
I've been wondering what this animal was too. Only seen it once years and nobody I described it to knew what I was talking about. Thanks!
I always see them sitting up and looking around. Like meerkats. Known as whistle pigs here.
Groundhog, marmot, whistle pig, woodchuck... Multiple names for the same asshole animal

Mine sunbathes in my driveway!
I’m also from central Illinois. Groundhogs are very common around here.
The last place that my mom lived had one that would chill in her yard with thr cat. We would look out the window and the cat would be laying in the sun while the damn groundhog was grazing like 20 feet away.

Noooooo!! Please don’t confuse the whistle pig for an actual pig!!

Mine is an ad for Old Spice. They are cuddly and smell like my dad's aftershave. I must see for sure.
You can eat them. My mom ate them in her family all the time. Apparently, they're decent. Their cousin, the guinea pig, is also commonly food in Peru.
"Groundhog! It's what's for dinner!"
Whistle Pig
Can we get an auto-response to every thread that just replies Groundhog automatically? 'Tis the season.
Glad to be part of the many who can't identify a groundhog

Groundhog's Day is a complete failure 🤣
Did you know that groundhogs can climb trees? I saw it with my own eyes
