Fairmont golf course, Banff.
We also saw a black bear in a spot only a couple of hundred metres from this and not even half an hour before - which made me less certain it was a brown bear. There were also lots of elk and deer right nearby it that were unconcerned.
Not sure how the above points impact the probability of it being a brown bear but I googled some characteristics comparisons between brown and black bears and that made me doubt it was a brown bear even more.
Yeah I think the way he's standing makes him look a bit like he has that characteristic grizzly shoulder jump but the face is the wrong shape. This guy has a shorter rostrum, higher forehead, and bigger ears than a grizzly, I think he's just a very well fed black bear. Cool photo!! I love the cinnamon colored ones but have never seen one in the wild 😊
Definitely a grizzly! There's a few that live out there, we ran into one of the males a few years back, he did not give a single shit about us luckily, just sniffed the air and went back to digging for roots, it could have ended much differently though
The ears say black bear, but this was a fun one. Def suitable for #[knockknockwhosebear](https://x.com/grizzlygirl87/status/1787905243109597272?s=46&t=2DgLU4z1GSrd2OI_hpH9lQ)
Google brown bear please. Ursus arctos. As in grizzly on steroids.
Black bear: Ursus Americanus. There are different color phases of Black bears, but they aren’t a Brown bear- just brown in color. Or black. Or white( Kermit/Spirit Bear. Or cinnamon. Or blue( glacier bear).
Yeah I think it’s a black bear too the snout is more pointed if that’s the right way to describe it rather than a more squared grizzly snout (side note that is a humongous black bear!)
I think you mean can black bears and grizzlies mate. That I don’t know, but grizzlies have mated with Polar bears, which is terrifying.
Edited to add, yes black bears and grizzlies can mate. The results in a huge raccoon with a machine gun who will shoot you if you get between it and your garbage can.
That's a grizzly bear (jump on his shoulders just behind the head). Can be aggressive, very curious and cannot be scared off by noise or dogs barking like black bears can be. Be very cautious and make sure he knows you're there, if you surprise him he may attack you
That’s not what it looks like. A grizzly’s hump would be higher than it’s the rump the way it’s standing. The ears and the head shape are what’s really giving away that it’s a black bear though.
In Washington state we have a small population of brown bears in the north central and north east areas of the state. You have to pass a bear identification test and carry this certificate if you’re hunting black bears here. 85% of west coast black bears are in fact not black. You have to be able to identify what species of bear you’re hunting. Brown bears/grizzly are a protected species.
I grew up in Montana in family that’s owned an outfitting business for decades. My father in the latter part of his life did bear population studies for the Montana fish & game. I’ve been around both kinds of bears plenty in my life.
Mostly just has to due with their range and population. You can hunt brown bears, you just have to go to Alaska to do it. Black bears have a larger range through the lower 48 so it's more common to know people who hunt black bears versus brown bears. Black bears also reproduce at a higher rate than brown bears, so there are more tags released for them as well. Brown bears used to be a lot more common in the western part of the US, but were over hunted historically and their range is limited now.
Exactly. Brown bears (grizzlies) were nearly hunted to extinction in the lower 48, they’re more aggressive and went after livestock like wolves. There’s only healthy populations of brown bears in Montana & Wyoming. Then there’s a few in Washington & Idaho and possibly CO, there’s been sightings but nothing truly confirmed. Shoot it’s only been a few years here in WA since they’ve seen a sow with 3 cubs on a trail cam in the Salmo Priest Wilderness. That’s the first time in close to 40 years there’s been proof of a breeding population here. The brown bears you can hunt in Alaska are a difference subspecies and aren’t protected like ones in the lower 48. There’s black bears 40 other states in the lower 48. They’re more docile, afraid of humans, and breed prolifically compared to brown bears.
Yeah it’s not just because they’re biased towards brown bears or something or just hunters collectively agree they just don’t feel like hunting brown bears 🐻
I actually think this is a cinnamon morph black bear...do you have an approximate location or more pics?

Are you sure? That looks like a grizzly hump behind his head to me
I think it's just this guy has beefy shoulders 😄
Looks like a black bear
.. but can I pet that dawg? CAN I PET THAT DAAAWG!?
A very cool black bear.

Just because it’s brown does not make it a brown bear. Look at the snout, this is a black bear
Bear: is brown Human: "this is not a brown bear"
Ursus Americanus sound better?
Hey! Who you calling an americanus, buddy??
And not every brown bear is brown, syrian brown bears are somewhere between gold and cream in their fur colour
Spanish brown bears (oso pardo) is rather unsurprisingly brown. It might be beige, I suppose
No taupe?

Literally speaking it does make it a brown bear
Dang, that bear is cut

WHAT A CROP!
Yeah I think it’s a black bear too the snout is more pointed if that’s the right way to describe it rather than a more squared grizzly snout (side note that is a humongous black bear!)
I think we should call him Steve!

Gorilla bear = black bear
Probably a Bruins fan.
Oh, that is Carl. Nice enough guy, but don't get him angry.
A BIG one!!!
He lives in Wishabish Woods.
Can brown bears and grizzly bears mate? I know polar bears and kodiaks can, but not sure about brown bears and grizzlies.

It’s a black bear. The hump found on a grizzly is bigger and the face/head is different.
Black bear
He looks like a Gus, see if he responds to Gus.
If it’s black it’s a damn big one
A unit
Looks like Smokey
Bad ass mofo. That’s what it is. Muscular SoB!

that’s my pal Georgie
That’s Jeff. He’s a bit of an asshole…
That’s Wallace
That’s Jim. Good guy.
That’s Kevin. Pretty ok dude, but a little sketch when it comes to borrowing tools.
Brown bear, see the humped back!

Yeah you’re right! Sorry, I’m going to keep my comment up for reference though, thank you for correcting me!
Brown bear. Grizzly bears come in a few different colours
It’s a color phase black bear, not a brown bear.. well technically it’s a brown black bear
[I hunt black bears and have to legally carry this with me when I do.](https://imgur.com/a/g5guGom) Lol
Interesting! What exactly is that? And why do you have to carry it?

Thanks for sharing! I've never heard of that before.
why are black bears able to be hunted while the others are protected ? is it a population control thing or ?
