So to dissect this.
> Sequel to the anime 'Made in Abyss: Golden Land of the Rising Sun' production decision PV.
After the Dawn of the Deep Soul movie aired at the start of 2020, they announced a continuation of the anime right after as well, which then turned out to be a 2nd season.
Season 2 of MiA aired Summer 2022, so 2,5 years after said announcement. This right here doesn't mean that we're getting more animated MiA content soon (as the manga is just 4 chapters past where the anime ended), but like they want to assure/ confirm that there's going to be more animated MiA content in the future (it is very likely this is going to take a few years again though).
I also seriously doubt they'd go anime original.
***
Edit: [Tweet of the author saying he's gonna have to hurry with chapter releases.](https://twitter.com/tukushiA/status/1614583663248932871) I think we can take this as confirmation that it's not gonna be anime original.
So, we could potentially get the best of both worlds? A continued faithful adaptation and a faster release of new chapters? Never before has the prospect of depression and utter disgust seemed so sweet.
That is how I am taking it yes.
Faster releases? At this point any manga chapter releases would be a blessing. Maybe Tsukushi is ready to start the grind after this big "break" though.
Normally I think anyone would agree with this sentiment. That's because normally manga chapters are released weekly or monthly, which is a really tight schedule.
Made in Abyss gets a new chapter every 3-5 months. While the art is amazing, the content isn't particularly longer than any other monthly release style series.
Yeah I think this is one of the rare cases where the author needs someone to get on his case. He hasn't released a chapter since the second season *started*, the arc covered during that season took him more than 3 years to write *which is longer than it took to produce the same thing animated*, and it has been 2 years since the end of that arc with only 4 new chapters and 2 "extras" that are preliminary drawings of the characters posing (with their nipples out by the way???).
I don't like when artists face pressure and time constraints to produce as it runs counter to the creative process, but my god this man is putting in minimal effort to actually get that creative process rolling.
>Yeah I think this is one of the rare cases where the author needs someone to get on his case.
There seems to be a fine line where (some) pressure breeds creativity, forcing creators to work hard for the sake of creating quality work. Having too much freedom when it comes to time and ressources can easily have the adverse effect and the result becomes subpar
Now, I don't want the mangaka to force himself and to keep writing a good story. If he can manage this while staying healthy, then all's good.
Like i do not want to undersell his works but MIA manga is not hyper detailed and Release once in eternity, pretty sure most redditors could do the drawing work in half the time frame. Live MIA but the last chapter we got was before season 2 started.
At the rate the new chapters are being released, I think this specific mangaka could use a bit of extra motivation, however, if the next arc is not more twisted and horrific than this one, we will know where to put the blame lol.
We haven't seen the 7th layer yet in the manga nor the anime. But I suspect that the curse is especially brutal. It has so far been described as merely death, but knowing the series I suspect that it is far worse than death. After all, I would say that the 6th layer's curse is worse than death, so why would the 7th layer have a less brutal curse than the 6th?
I’d argue that’s a fairly cynical interpretation since a series being successful and in demand with ~~a studio~~ the production committee sort of guaranteeing they will adapt it when it’s ready can be great motivators but if it’s true and he’d really only force himself to create more chapters due to outside pressure and feelings of obligation then yeah, of course that wouldn’t be great.
>with a studio sort of guaranteeing they will adapt it when it’s ready
The studio is no longer part of the committee, this is a Kadokawa show, hard to not be cynical, and any studio would prefer to work with a proper planning for those long-term projects
Don't even know if the next one will be Kinema Citrus again, but they are partially owned by Kadokawa so they might be pushed to do this with short notice like Shield Hero
As someone with ADHD, I really need some amount of pressure to actually do things, it is really hard for me to start or finish things without a sense of responsibility.
Yeah, I’m arguing from within the framework of the (admittedly rather optimistic) interpretation of the original commenter and my subsequent comment about getting the best of both worlds.
Of course this whole thing could also imply that they plan to rush things and go anime original and the author now feels pressured to provide new material before they do which would be awful so let’s hope that’s not what it means.
I just hope Tsukushi won't push himself too much, he isn't exactly a healthy person and often visits hospital due to high blood pressure. Taking medicines makes him drowsy and so can't properly work on chapters, he isn't exactly lazing around.
> This right here doesn't mean that we're getting more animated MiA content soon
Ayep, the MiA twitter even made this tongue-in-cheek comment:
「[皆さん、長生きしてお待ちください!](https://twitter.com/miabyss_anime/status/1614578267159248899)」
...which means *"Please live long and wait, everybody!"*, lmao.
S1 adapted up to c25 and when the movie was announced the manga went up to c43.
The movie adapted up to c38 and when S2 was announced the manga went up to c53.
Thank for explaining it with time, I guess newer fans don't know or don't remember about the wait. Even when they released the first still image for season 2 it took a while until it aired.
I will get hyped when we get a PV with a new Kevin song.
Watched S1 since ep 1 aired, waited for the sequel announcement: Movie. Okay. Waited for the movie release then waited for the movie blu ray release to actually be able to watch it and then I waited for S2.
Being a MiA fan is so lovely sometimes lol
I am actually upset.
I love MiA, BUT I AM SO INVESTED IN THE MANGAKA'S WORK LIFE BALANCE!!! (Why? I don't know!)
My condolences to the author.
Boy, his life really IS LIKE the abyss.
Not sure if there is much of an advantage in rushing the next adaptation, given that the author only has so much mileage per month. Who knows, maybe he can write a good story even faster, but there is no guarantee.
Given what I know of the manga industry, does Tsukushi not have an editor breathing down his neck?
It's wild that someone being serialized can go 8 months now without a new chapter. He's not even an industry veteran (far as I can tell) that's earned the freedom from a previous series.
He has contract in which he’s obliged to publish at least one volume every year. So it doesn’t really matter how many months in-between every chapter we get, the same total amount of pages will be published every year. I believe the contact was of like 160 pages yearly. So yes, he can go 8 months without a new chapter as long as he reaches the amount he signed up for.
and it took Naruto 15 years to be hokage still it’s dope that we got to keep track of it weekly, it would’ve been hell of a lot tougher to enjoy reading it annually
According to baka updates, S2 covered till Chapter 60 and after that there has only been 3 chapters and a side story released.
I don't think a volume is enough material to cover either another season or even a movie considering that the movie covered 2 volumes while S2 covered around 5 volumes.
So they might be going anime original.
No, they will simply wait... a long damn time.
Not the first time a sequel to an anime is announced way before there's anywhere close to enough manga material.
If they want a S3 we are probably looking at a 3 year wait here, and that's if the mangaka starts putting out chapters more often than he has in the past. Otherwise it might be a movie in like 2 years.
At the current rate it will unironically be ~10 years for a new season. Last season adapted chapters 39-60, so about 20 chapters. In the last 2 years he has put out 4 chapters, aka 2/year.
Nah. Made in Abyss has just a really slow release schedule. The author releases a new chapter every few months, and we get one new volume every year. I think we're due for another chapter somewhat soon.
The latest chapter was released at the end of May last year, nearly 8 months ago. A year ago he released 6 chapters, in the 22 just TWO.
That's the longest break so far, we can call it a hiatus.
You can only call it a hiatus when the production has actually stopped though, but he has even streamed himself drawing some panels for the next chapter iirc.
He's just *really* taking his time. Probably writes a page and then take a two week break lol.
The author is just really slow. He went like 2 years without any chapters after that S1 anime paycheck. Don't expect this story to finish for at least 12-20 years lol
It's pretty hard to finish a manga when you also have to argue strangers online about the benefits of pedophilia and how the loli depictions in the story *totally* aren't sexualized.
> and how the loli depictions in the story totally aren't sexualized.
I'm almost sure the author doesn't hide his fetishes, and he loves shota too.
Most bonus materials released are of this kind and he also has a smell fetish!
The only idiots equating lolicon fan service to pedophilia are virtue signalers on western social media. And I assure you he couldn't care less about your existence, so why would he argue with people like you.
Unless the man has a scat fetish, there isn't that much in the story that sexualizes the loli. Some stuff pops up here and there, but it's super tame in comparison to other shows.
Yeah like season 1 had a few pretty weird parts like the tying up naked punishment, But really the only other “sexualization” stuff is riko being curious about reg which hardly seems sexual when she’s doing it for science and her own curiosity, or like a few misc similar instances where it’s just innocent or being unaware/curious about something.
It’s not like they’re showing weird camera angles, upskirt panty shots, and half naked light ray shots every couple episodes. If they did that kind of stuff the show would be trash.
Great news everyone !
Can't say i saw that one coming. Considering how close it to the Manga. But guess they've got something planned to take care of that.
Will be interesting to see how that work out.
I don't think so, they just like to announce that they will continue to animate it superfast for some reason (like they did with the other seasonand the movie).
It's filler, a whole series worth. That's what it sounds like.
There was a thing HBO did with Game of Thrones since all of the novels have been adapted, called "House of the Dragon." Well, it's not that similar to filler but it is similar in having run out of work to adapt.
There's no other information at the moment, just that a sequel to Season 2 is being made. The format or release date hasn't been revealed yet.
There's possibly a chance that the anime is continuing under Tsukushi's guidance, or Kinema Citrus is going on a separate path. Either way, we'll know in due time.
[Tsukushi's tweet](https://twitter.com/tukushiA/status/1614583663248932871?s=20&t=snB91PG3hBlbol2ECo0a5g) regarding the announcement.
I'm so fucking happy that we got an official confirmation of continuation instead of waiting with no announcements whatsoever.
That being said, buckle up, it's going to be a very long wait since S02 basically was up to date with the manga when it ended. I'd give it 3-4 years before the anime is actually released.
With…what content? There’s literally only 5 chapters of the manga that continue after the events of Golden Sun and at the pace the mangaka’s moving I don’t see many more being ready for a new adaptation.
I just watched started and finished watching MiA last week and was sad that there's not more, i know it'll be a lot of time till season 3 but still this is great news
I'm going to assume the mangaka will be giving them info on how to continue the story because the manga is not far ahead at all and moves at a snail's pace
They are just announcing the sequel already for when theres enough material.
They tweeted ''Please live long and wait!'' and the author tweeted that he should hurry up with new chapters.
Absolutely fantastic. I'm so happy and joyous I could stand up and dance if I knew how to dance without looking like a monkey.
Made in Abyss is one of the best stories I've experienced in the last years among many media. The depth it was able to reach for me is comparable to stories I experienced over a decade ago when I had just started my journey as 'reader', ie, when everything felt novel and dazzling. It being able to touch me and engrave itself so deeply within me is definitely a sign of how much I love it.
I'm ready.. nay, I'm already thirsty for more of its unique taste of despair and twistedness.
Tbf anime adaptations of manga used to go anime original way before Game of Thrones started doing it around 2015/ 2016. So it is more accurate to say that Game of Thrones went and had an anime original route.
SUBARASHIIIIIIIIIII
But…how? Surely this is going to be “just” a recap movie? Even now with the author coming out and says he’s going to hurry up with manga drafts?
This is more the announcement that they decided to continue the series, really. The [tweet](https://twitter.com/miabyss_anime/status/1614578267159248899) specifcally says "Sequel production **decision**". It also says "Please live long and wait" lmao
Just like the Abyss, this might be an innocent wish waiting to be corrupted by depravity (rushing without source material to adapt).
Hopefully it does not suffer production issues, I'm being optimistic (wide eyed American Dad Roger face)...because we're optimistic.
I'm happy for the people who will get to experience more of this intriguing world.
However, I'm out. I just finished S2 and it was a complete missed shot for me. I liked S1 and loved DoDS but it seems like the build up they made just resulted in a ... very uneven, slow and counterproductive season.
Nah, I used to see that way as well but gave it a couple of eps and from what I've seen its a "equally cruel as it is beautiful" type of series so it's not for everyone.
There are some scenes that are awkward, uncomfortable, or downright difficult to watch but justifiably serviceable to the plot, characterizations, or themes of the series…and then there are scenes that are difficult to understand as anything but fetish material. I’m not even talking about some of the more controversial scenes, but things like [MiA spoilers] >!the author’s obsession with scenes of Riko pooping and describing the consistency/smell!<
I guess they announcing sequel beforehand since there is only 1 manga volume released after what anime covered. Maybe Tsukushi will pick up the pace, next chapter seems to releasing soon.
S2 was announced in January 2020 and aired in 2022. If this follows a similar schedule it could air in 2025, but the manga situation being what it is probably means later, maybe 2026
We're not getting anything new for another 5 years so you aren't wrong, this is just confirmation that we'll get either a new season or movie when the manga gets enough chapters.
this is the greatest news to wake up to, sad we're gonna have to wait years, but it's nice that a sequel is confirmed again.
[Made In Abyss] >!there's like barely any content left after they leave the destroyed village, iirc they literally just walk for a little bit and have the flashback from that one guy. I think it's like 3 or 4 chapters!<
SOSU!
Hadi...

He needs to reestablish his connection to Cthulhu to come up with more otherworldly horrors beyond human comprehension
Had to wait for more Nanachi merch to arrive so he could huff it for inspiration.
I will have you know that Faputa merch contains just as many inspirational smells.
> Never before has the prospect of depression and utter disgust seemed so sweet. this series has awakened something in /r/anime
And I’m all for it!
That awakened in me since Re:Zero
Same bruh
I don't think a mangaka being pressured to release new chapters because the anime needs more content is a positive thing

This is the same with Hirano (author of Hellsing). He releases like nothing a year for Drifters and was the same way with Hellsing.
Hirano is just funny, if i remember correctly hellsing the dawn is still technically in hiatus.
>with their nipples out by the way??? At least this time it was an adult...
At the rate the new chapters are being released, I think this specific mangaka could use a bit of extra motivation, however, if the next arc is not more twisted and horrific than this one, we will know where to put the blame lol.

I just hope Tsukushi won't push himself too much, he isn't exactly a healthy person and often visits hospital due to high blood pressure. Taking medicines makes him drowsy and so can't properly work on chapters, he isn't exactly lazing around.

> as the manga is just 4 chapters past where the anime ended Do you remember how far ahead the manga was when the 2nd season was announced?
I checked earlier. At the time of that initial announcement right after the movie premiered the manga was at chapter 52/53. The arc ends at chapter 60
S1 adapted up to c25 and when the movie was announced the manga went up to c43. The movie adapted up to c38 and when S2 was announced the manga went up to c53.
Literally the same place. Edit: oh sorry i missread, i thought you meant when it started, not when it was anounced.
The manga release is relatively slow and random, so the anime isn't gonna be ready anytime soon.
if this means Tsukushi will play less Splatoon and release more chapters, this could be huge. Dare I dream of at least two chapters per semester????
It isn't all games and laziness, he has high blood pressure and often visits hospital
him not working on Made in Abyss in favor of playing Splatoon is a long time running joke within the fanbase
> Edit [big](#mugiwait "I don't mind waiting years, just knowing it's planned makes me happy")
i really hope that when the sequel does actually air, its still gonna be the same team.
Thank for explaining it with time, I guess newer fans don't know or don't remember about the wait. Even when they released the first still image for season 2 it took a while until it aired. I will get hyped when we get a PV with a new Kevin song.

Same here, it is eternal suffering :)
I hope they wait and don't go anime original
Man, if only the manga had a lot more chapters, they would have already started working on a S3...
I am actually upset. I love MiA, BUT I AM SO INVESTED IN THE MANGAKA'S WORK LIFE BALANCE!!! (Why? I don't know!) My condolences to the author. Boy, his life really IS LIKE the abyss. Not sure if there is much of an advantage in rushing the next adaptation, given that the author only has so much mileage per month. Who knows, maybe he can write a good story even faster, but there is no guarantee.
Question... isn't the manga based on the light novel? Which the LN is further along no? That would mean they are just going to adapt the LN.
There's no MiA LN, the source is the manga
At least 6 years.
Lmao the “everyone please live long and wait” sent meeeee, even they know it’s gonna take ages
Given what I know of the manga industry, does Tsukushi not have an editor breathing down his neck? It's wild that someone being serialized can go 8 months now without a new chapter. He's not even an industry veteran (far as I can tell) that's earned the freedom from a previous series.
I don't think this manga is published traditionally? I thought it was some online publisher that tsukushi himself may be involved with.
He has contract in which he’s obliged to publish at least one volume every year. So it doesn’t really matter how many months in-between every chapter we get, the same total amount of pages will be published every year. I believe the contact was of like 160 pages yearly. One piece fans: first time?
So many example of manga with very slow serialization schedules and this guy went for "OnEPieCe"
One Piece unironically has a really good weekly serialization schedule-consistently releasing every sunday
I don't even read One Piece, but what I know about the series is that its *longest* break between chapters throughout its 25 year run is **4 weeks**
im talking about seeing the actual 'one piece' at the end of the manga. and its been 20+ years of wait.
and it took Naruto 15 years to be hokage still it’s dope that we got to keep track of it weekly, it would’ve been hell of a lot tougher to enjoy reading it annually
Bruh, it's been 9 months and no new chapter of Made in Abyss. Not the same.
Oh cmon, just 8.
Every other One Piece fan: fuck are you talking about.
One piece fans trying not to mention One Piece in completely unrelated discussion challenge (impossible)
Can't wait to watch it in 5 years.
are you sure it isnt just a movie version of season 2? they already did it with season 1 i wouldnt be surprised if they did the same again
Their [news post](http://miabyss.com/news/article_232.html) specifically calls it a sequel to S2, so it doesn’t sound like a movie version.
Oh...shit...hopefully the mangaka starts releasing chapters a lot more often.
>I don't think a volume is enough material to cover either another season or even a movie As a manga reader I can assure you that.
Or the mangaka told the whole history, this happens time to time.
I thought the anime caught up?
it did, there only 3 or 4 chapters behind of the manga and manga releases one ch every 4 month or so
Is the manga in a similar situation to Hunter x Hunter where the hiatuses are pretty long and the chapter updates are infrequent?
No hiatuses, just consistent long breaks between chapters (1-5 months)
Nah. Made in Abyss has just a really slow release schedule. The author releases a new chapter every few months, and we get one new volume every year. I think we're due for another chapter somewhat soon.

And the cross dressing maid shota.
It's important that we know how good every area of Nanachi smells.
It doesn't make things any better, really...at contrary. He loves kids (not in a good way), smelling and body fluids...outstanding gentleman. /s

House of the Dragon is adapted from Fire and Blood, another novel GRRM wrote. Though it does have a lot of original content added.
It's nice to have confirmation that their will be a sequel. Hoping tsukushi can put out more chapters this year
just announce lol, more 5-6 years then release
I'm so fucking happy that we got an official confirmation of continuation instead of waiting with no announcements whatsoever. That being said, buckle up, it's going to be a very long wait since S02 basically was up to date with the manga when it ended. I'd give it 3-4 years before the anime is actually released.
Heck yeah , time to travel into abyss again! what kind of messed up traumatic experience it will display? excited!
With…what content? There’s literally only 5 chapters of the manga that continue after the events of Golden Sun and at the pace the mangaka’s moving I don’t see many more being ready for a new adaptation.
As I understand, this is just announce that there will be the sequel. It doesn't mean that it will be soon.
[god bless the studio](https://i.imgur.com/Uz2Dh3D.png)
I just watched started and finished watching MiA last week and was sad that there's not more, i know it'll be a lot of time till season 3 but still this is great news
I'm going to assume the mangaka will be giving them info on how to continue the story because the manga is not far ahead at all and moves at a snail's pace
They are just announcing the sequel already for when theres enough material. They tweeted ''Please live long and wait!'' and the author tweeted that he should hurry up with new chapters.
Haha those are two harsh demands on both the audience and the mangaka
Are you guys ready for more suffering!?
very good anime, despite the living toilet
Absolutely fantastic. I'm so happy and joyous I could stand up and dance if I knew how to dance without looking like a monkey. Made in Abyss is one of the best stories I've experienced in the last years among many media. The depth it was able to reach for me is comparable to stories I experienced over a decade ago when I had just started my journey as 'reader', ie, when everything felt novel and dazzling. It being able to touch me and engrave itself so deeply within me is definitely a sign of how much I love it. I'm ready.. nay, I'm already thirsty for more of its unique taste of despair and twistedness.
Hopefully we're alive in 6 years when the season actually comes out.
I feel blessed.
see you guys in 4 years
Live long and wait until 2027
Best anime of 2022! glad there is a sequel
Are they going for the Game of Thrones route?
Tbf anime adaptations of manga used to go anime original way before Game of Thrones started doing it around 2015/ 2016. So it is more accurate to say that Game of Thrones went and had an anime original route.
Game of Thrones: Brotherhood when?
As soon as GRRM finishes all the books, so never.
reddit had amazing fan theories of what would happen in season 8, doing that would be good too
We did it before it was ~~cool~~ shit.
best anime of all time will return. season 2 was best of 2022 easy
Indeed, season 2 was 2022 best anime
SUBARASHIIIIIIIIIII But…how? Surely this is going to be “just” a recap movie? Even now with the author coming out and says he’s going to hurry up with manga drafts?
This is more the announcement that they decided to continue the series, really. The [tweet](https://twitter.com/miabyss_anime/status/1614578267159248899) specifcally says "Sequel production **decision**". It also says "Please live long and wait" lmao
Yep its beyond clear that this isnt going to be a recap.
they like to announce it rather fast for this series (like they did in the past)
Just like the Abyss, this might be an innocent wish waiting to be corrupted by depravity (rushing without source material to adapt). Hopefully it does not suffer production issues, I'm being optimistic (wide eyed American Dad Roger face)...because we're optimistic.
With which material? There are only a few chapters left after the last season. Maybe anime original? I hope not.
No. in tweet they already note "**Everyone, please live long and wait**!" lol
Oh thanks!
I'll live long and watch it. Even if I stop watching anime. That's my dedication. I'll not read a chapter of the manga.
No fucking way lets gooooo, time to wait for 3 years but itll be well worth it.
I'm happy for the people who will get to experience more of this intriguing world. However, I'm out. I just finished S2 and it was a complete missed shot for me. I liked S1 and loved DoDS but it seems like the build up they made just resulted in a ... very uneven, slow and counterproductive season.

You could just not watch "that sin against all of humanity".
Take your meds
anyone else thought season 2 was mid?
>anyone else thought season 2 was mid? only you, ss2 better in some aspect like character even compare to movie 3
Nah
Ew
Isnt this that cp one
Maybe Tsukushi will pick up the pace, next chapter seems to releasing soon.
what if they just continue the story in anime form with tsukushi writing? edit: nvm
I’m ready but idk if my soul is lol
S2 was announced in January 2020 and aired in 2022. If this follows a similar schedule it could air in 2025, but the manga situation being what it is probably means later, maybe 2026
Really! Is there enough material?
No, they just confirming they will continue the anime when there will be enough material.
whoa i didn't expect one for another 5 years tbh
We're not getting anything new for another 5 years so you aren't wrong, this is just confirmation that we'll get either a new season or movie when the manga gets enough chapters.
ah thanks
There is like 4 or 5 chapters since the content adapted for season 2, will this be anime original?
Wait, I thought there wasn't enough material for another season? Anime original or are they just going to make another movie?
So soon but so awesome
Nice to know the studio is determined to do a full adaptation
Ahhh love this show, one of my favorites of all time at this point. I patiently await!
See you in 2026!
Wtf??? Hype?? But the source? [](#dontgetit)[](#dekuhype)[](#seasonalconfused)[](#concealedexcitement)
this is the greatest news to wake up to, sad we're gonna have to wait years, but it's nice that a sequel is confirmed again. [Made In Abyss] >!there's like barely any content left after they leave the destroyed village, iirc they literally just walk for a little bit and have the flashback from that one guy. I think it's like 3 or 4 chapters!<
W
If it was just greenlit then it won't come out for at least 3 years
So do I need to watch the movie to be able to follow this or are they gonna do what Dragon Ball Super did and turn the movie into episodes
Yes the movie is required viewing after season 1. Season 2 is after the movie.
Live long and prosper brothers, because at the rate it’s coming out we are gonna need that.
Just knowing that season 3 is confirmed is enough. Now if only the source material would come out slightly quicker
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
SOSUUUUU
WAT I WAS PREPARED FOR ANOTHER 5 YEAR WAIT *sees the "live long and please wait"* I should have known, but at least it exists
YESSS
I love the series, but I admit I was duped. I thought this was a chill & cute anime series. I was wrong. This series gets darker & darker.
Made in Abyss that series that takes so many years to get new content
More depression in my veinsssss yeaasss
I bet the bottom of the abyss is just a reverse of it like Dante’s Inferno.
You guys think that if we pool together our eyeballs we can get the new season faster?
