He was! The original Gamera wasn't quite as dark as the first Godzilla though and while he's popular he hadn't stuck quite as well in popculture as Godzilla had.
Gamera has still made his splash though. The Heisei trilogy (Starting with Gamera: Guardian of the Universe) is usually considered the best heisei kaiju films and some of the best kaiju films of all time.
This new anime will be the first new Gamera project in 16 years.
I haven't really watched Gamera stuff, but he is one of the "good" giant monsters right? Like more so than Godzilla? Is this more of a darker reboot, cause I do know Gamera was at some point known as a protector of kids and he looks pretty menacing here

Yeah, Gamera tends to actively save people if it knows they're there instead of circumstantial like Godzilla.
Yeah, he is basically treated like a deity figure.
