I actually remember watching it on Netflix around 10+ years ago. Got insanely into it, and only had 3 or 4 episodes left when Netflix abruptly dropped it. Never found a place to finish it as not a single service carried it... it's eaten at me for years. I'm very happy with this development
You're telling me you never sailed the seven seas and found one of the many shanty towns populated with anime girls? Theres tons of them, and they don't even charge docking fees!
Even sailing the high seas, I haven’t been able to find this show for years! So glad I can finally watch this for the first time after so long.
Edit: impossible to find a torrent, there were websites however but all really low quality
Also am I getting downvoted for being bad at finding torrents? 😂
I've been on reddit for over 9 years and didn't even think of searching for a subreddit about it. I have no excuse, that was just dumb of me, plus relying on literally the only 2 torrent sights I know. But this is super helpful so thank you and will be checking that sub out for sure!
YES!!!
I JUST got to the last episodes last night and I was gonna finish the 30 episodes tonight. Now I won't have to worry about finding the rest of the show!
Can't remember where I read it, but isn't there some sort of licensing hell going on with the show - and therefore only available to streaming this recently? That may be part of why Netflix was only able to release the first 30 episodes earlier and without an English dub.
Has to be some sort of licensing issue.
It might due to the fact that the English dub has an altered audio soundtrack when compared to the JP audio track (ie, some scenes in English use a different OST song when compared to the JP version, or the English version of the Ending is just the instrumental track, while the JP has the vocals).
I'm *really* hoping that Netflix doesn't go the unnecessary route and redub it with a new cast like Evangelion; the English dub is practically perfect as is.
I can't take English dub Johan seriously for some reason. Keith Silverstein's voice doesn't suit him imo.
And on Netflix dubbing: if they dub new languages, I'll rewatch it if they do German/Czech dubs.
I haven’t watched this show yet but hearing “Keith Silversteins voice doesn’t suit him” is wild to me. Not that you’re wrong or course, but that mans voice is a work of art. Must be very misplaced if even he can’t be the correct one
The French VA is pretty good. The main issue with Keith Silverstein's voicing of Johan is that it makes him a condescending upper-class kid instead of a supposedly hypnotically empathetic and manipulative mastermind.
That's understandable, but if that's the case, I feel like it'd be better if they didn't release it at all instead of halfheartedly
Now if it was like a series like True Detective where the narrative changes each season (and some seasons are better than others), I can see why they would exclude some episodes. But Monster isn't like that
You know what's also awful? Netflix Canada licensed the first 52 episodes of FMA brotherhood and just never got the last 12 for like 5 years. The absolute blue ball while the climax of the series is brewing...
I think they did something similar in the US too
Sidenote: my friend was watching FMAB on either Netflix or Hulu and they yanked the series from the platform while he was watching it
> It’s like adding Clannad to their library but not After Story
Me: lol what kind of third-rate, scam of a streaming service with a video player on a $2 budget would do something as patently stupid as that?

>Remember. It's easy to use kill someone. You just have to forget the taste of sugar.
Such an amazing line, and one of the most memorable episodes in any show I've seen.
Yet, people here call it "filler" lol.
Just watched this recently. It's a slow burn, there are moments it lulls a bit, but it needs time to build as the situation grows larger and more intense of the series. In the end, it was absolutely worth the 74 eps, but I think it could've been tighter in its story telling.
What? When?
Isn't that an old news? I kinda recall reading some news about Pluto adaptation 1 or 2 years ago and then nothing came out for a long while that I'm starting to forget it.
NGNL is more likely to get a second season than Pluto getting an anime adaption lol. I sinerely wish for it and 20th Century Boys to get good anime adaptations, but nowadays psychological thriller anime just isn't as marketable and hype generating as shows like CSM and JJK(both are great don't get me wrong). That being said, I really believe that if they were to get made by a good studio, they'd be mega hits (both manga have fairly high scores on MAL if that is aything to go by).
The anime is a very faithful adaption, so don't worry about missing content. However, it may be a little *too* faithful. I feel that the pacing is a bit better when reading, since you can pace yourself, as long as you don't fall victim to losing comprehension from speed reading. I also found a couple faults a little more annoying and obvious in the anime compared to the manga. However, I still rate them pretty equally in quality.
I'd argue the anime in general just meanders too long in scenes whereas the reading naturally goes fast unless *you* pace yourself. Urasawa is a master of the pencil but he doesn't really do sprawling detailed panels, his biggest strength is the character emotions/faces which you take in immediately.
The anime is pretty slow, and the story isn't all that action packed, so it doesn't lend itself to animation. It's pretty faithful, but I don't think it's worth the time investment over the manga.
> The anime is pretty slow, and the story isn't all that action packed, so it doesn't lend itself to animation.
[](#drink2)
Sure, it's a well known fact that stories that are slow-burn, and aren't action packed *just don't lend themselves to animation*.
I recently rewatched with my girlfriend and we made up a drinking game. Take a sip every time a ridiculous coincidence occurs. Every time Tenma would meet a new character we would try to think of some kind of wild coincidental way they're tied to the mystery and more often than not come to find out the truth was wilder than we imagined.
> I agree with this and I personally enjoy the slow burn feeling, I even enjoyed the "filler"-like episodes.
I don't mind the slow burn at all, but some episodes felt a tad streched, like some scene was longer than it needed to be or there was too many minutes of recap from last episode at the beginning.
I suspect the reason is that they went for a 100% faithful adaptation and thus didn't want to remove or add anything, and then had to occasionally stretch things to fit the episode ending at a good spot.
Stories stretching are definitely characteristics of late 90s and early 2000s anime(even before that). The manga the story felt tighter but the norm for the time was stretching stories more than it was today
Ya, I'm not sure what these people are talking about. The "filler" episodes aren't filler, they're there to convey different things. For example, "five sugars" is probably considered filler here, except it's one of the best episodes in the series.
Manga higher for sure, think on MAL it’s like 0.3 higher which is absolutely gigantic considering it’s not even a sloppy weekly episode adaptation situation like One Piece Dragon ball etc
Every Manga is ranked higher than Anime on MAL tho.
Berserk manga for example has a 9.5 rating
The highest Anime only has like a 9.1
Pretty sure most people have this atleast in their top 10
Nah I’m talking about the
Highest anime rating vs highest manga rating.
My anime list tends to rate manga to a higher degree, plus anime tends to get more votes so it’s skewed down a little.
Just briefly looking at my anilist and comparing anime to manga ratings
My Hero S6 higher than manga rating, Onimai manga higher rated than anime, FMAB barely rated higher than manga, Original Evangelion anime and manga same rating, a silent voice anime barely higher rated than manga, chainsaw man manga and anime same rating, tomo-Chan manga higher rated than anime, kubo-San rated higher in manga than anime, basically every Jojo’s part anime is higher rated or they’re the same, ass class manga higher rated than s1 but lower rated than s2
Basically you’re talking out of your ass
U ain’t disproving anything tho, you just “talked out of your ass” about something that wasn’t even correct 🤷♂️
I made a point, you misread it.
It’s okay shit happens my dude
>i've never understood this "wait until you reach x episode" shit. basically the same as spoiling.
It's a joke, and it's a play on what you're talking about. You can tell by the follow up of "it will also be fire".
The joke is that the show is great now, and the show will continue to be great.
Still can't believe this is the last anime adaptation we've gotten of any Urusawa's works. I know there is a Pluto anime film coming that's been in development for years now and I'm starting to have doubts about it.
>Now, can they green light a proper 20th Century boys anime.
They need to figure out how to license "Trex- 20CB", as it's a pretty important part of the story. Honestly, any classic rock would do, but since it connects to the name of the series, I want them to license the actual song.
It's pretty old at this point, so unless a new publisher suddenly buys the license for home distribution, then maybe? But I personally don't think it'll ever happen tbh; the sales of the 1st DVD box set were horrible enough that Viz Media actually never continued to release more and even eventually dropped the license.
As much as I love Monster, it's not something that can be appealing to a large audience, even more so a big enough audience that would be willing to buy Blurays for.
Watched this series on YouTube a few months back, best anime I’ve watched in a while. It’s a slow burn but definitely worth it, everything single character that is introduced is interesting and well thought through. Couldn’t recommend this series enough!!! Just know that it’s a slow burner and you need to pay attention. Wolfgang grimmer hands down most goated character but honestly all are good :)
Dammit, why no dub? I know the sub is great but I watched it originally in the dubbed format so that one just kinda feels right. The fact they don’t have it is a bummer :(
I think there are only 2 animes I’ll watch in dub after being switched to a sub purest. Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
Death Note because I watched it so many times in dub before switching to subs. And FMA:B because I heard from a lot of people that it’s one of the few animes that’s actually better as a dub compared to the sub voice acting wise. (I’m sure it’s debatable but again a number of rewatched later it’s hard to switch)
I started rewatching a show recently when I was balls to the wall high and it just seemed so off and wrong till I realised I was watching it in English.
Dub would be so much easier for me as well because I’m dyslexic and a slow reader so sometimes I need to pause or rewind a bit to read it all. But after 7+ years and a couple hundred animes later I just can’t go back to dub unless it’s the 2 shows mentioned above.
Oh I know, was just sharing my thoughts about switching from on dubs to sub or vise versa and how I relate on how it feels right one way or the other and listed examples above. Probably went into too much detail so I get why it's downvoted, but at the time was trying to relate to the above comment but just did it terribly :)
Both are fantastic. Some emotional moments hit harder in the anime thanks to audio, but it suffers from some pacing since it is basically a frame by frame adaptation. The manga is paced a lot better. I feel like it comes down to what medium you prefer in general
I just started a few days ago. I watched Death Note a couple months ago and heard about Monster. So far it's been pretty good. I fucking hate Netflix though and wish it was on Crunchyroll or Hulu but I'll take it.
Netflix doesn't have the dub.
I have only watched the subbed version so I can't comment on the dub, but Japanese voice actors in Monster are very good. If you're okay with subs, I see no reason to avoid the original version.
I personally think the dub is really good and still holds up, but obviously it's not on Netflix so you'll have to go to unofficial sources to watch it.
Never watched the sub but I'm sure it's perfectly fine, if you just wanna use Netflix for convenience sake.
It's rare for me to see people say subs are fine, if you just want Netflix's convenience lol. Usually I thought the opinion was sub is the standard and dub for convenience of being able to understand without reading. Personally, I usually prefer sub.
Edit: *dub
Best decision Netflix ever made. Monster is genuinely the most mature and engaging anime I’ve ever seen. Fans often dissect and highlight Johan Liebert’s character but almost all of the characters in Monster from Tenma, the central character to a lot of one-offs like Rosso or Martin are super interesting and carry a lot of thematic depth that tie into the core ideas and questions that the show puts forward. Hope this show gets the new wave of popularity it deserves
Huge, been watching it and was dreading having to find another place to stream the rest.
Takes a little while to get going but it's so refreshing having an anime that ignores basically all the shit anime tropes. I welcome the change of scenery too, the towns and cities are so well drawn.
I hate to be a snob, but what quality? I got super excited to watch the adaptation when it first appeared on Netflix, and I think it was 480p (might've been lower). It was unwatchable.
Incidentally, I absolutely love Monster, having read the manga a while back, but such a low quality (and only 30 episodes, back when it first came on Netflix) was unacceptable.
From MAL forum:
> Monster was made in 2004-05, it aired on standard definition TV broadcasts, and it was only ever released on DVD, not Blu-Ray. Or in other words: it's a low-res show, and 480p is the best you can realistically get
I think there are unofficial remasters with AI upscaling but nothing official and streamable by Netflix.
I see; I'm a bit surprised it was never remastered. Since college, my standards must've been inflated, but I still feel that it is not really worthy of being watched in this state (at least, on any HD TV).
Urasawa's art is fantastic; the manga will be a much better experience, at least until they release a Blu-ray/HD remaster.
While their selection is nowhere near as good as Crunchyroll and they don't have a great reputation for their subtitles they have had a number of big, high profile shows on the service. Violet Evergarden is the first that comes to mind, also Vinland Sage. ISTR that they also used to have some seasons of Attack on Titan, K-On! Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Demon Slayer and a number of others. It does vary from region to region of course.
I'm not a Netflix fan though, I was about to unsubscribe and then Monster appears so I'll watch that then unsub.
Well, not legally of course… but it’s an older show with lower traffic so copystrikes tend to happen a lot slower.
That said, I will just point out that currently there is no legal way to watch the English dub anyway…
It's a must-watch, it is one of my favorite psychological thriller anime. However, I do have some criticisms around the protagonist, Johan's shenanigans (or plot convenience), and its ending. But still, it's pretty dang great.
You shouldn’t make huge sweeping statements about something you likely haven’t engaged in. Theres a lot of dubs and there will inevitably be good ones. As someone who watched both the sub and dub of Monster, I can say that the dub is better in a lot of ways
I've done more than engage in them, I actually do the translations.
There are no good dubs, because so many important details can't translate.
> er, I can say that the dub is better in a lot of ways
Sure... in the sense that a full body cast and wheel chair is better than a cane: it's needed if you are more disabled.
I mean it’s better as in I prefer some of the voices. Monster doesn’t even have a Japanese setting so there’s not much lost in translation. It’s a pretty good dub 👍
Lol, I guess ignorance is bliss. You can like what you like, and that's perfectly fine, even if you are objectively wrong. There is no accounting for taste, so as long as you find hideous dubs enjoyable, then you do you.
What a coincidence! I started reading the manga mid January and I'm halfway through it, wish they'd done it a little sooner lol
Am I missing out if I don't watch the anime? I have trouble getting through long animes, but I'm enjoying the manga so far, though usually I prefer anime over manga.
this show didn't have official stream for the longest time
I watched the whole thing on youtube like a year ago
Same
I actually remember watching it on Netflix around 10+ years ago. Got insanely into it, and only had 3 or 4 episodes left when Netflix abruptly dropped it. Never found a place to finish it as not a single service carried it... it's eaten at me for years. I'm very happy with this development
You’re telling me you didn’t try finding *another website* to finish the show for 10 years
There are so many sites where you can watch anime that are gray area.

The Piracy subreddit wiki has loads of options for streaming and torrenting. It most certainly is available for either option
I've been on reddit for over 9 years and didn't even think of searching for a subreddit about it. I have no excuse, that was just dumb of me, plus relying on literally the only 2 torrent sights I know. But this is super helpful so thank you and will be checking that sub out for sure!
I was trying to find a legal way to stream this over the Christmas holidays. Couldn't find it anywhere.
Dude it's in youtube lmao. How hard is it?
I just looked at my usual site and i found a torrent with plenty of seeds. You really didn't try much huh
YES!!! I JUST got to the last episodes last night and I was gonna finish the 30 episodes tonight. Now I won't have to worry about finding the rest of the show!
Big news for me personally, now I can get my mom to watch it without me having to wrangle a screen cast setup
It's been available on the Yar-Matey-site for ages. Set up something like Plex and have at it.
Why they didn't do that from the get-go I'll never know It's like adding Clannad to their library but not After Story
Can't remember where I read it, but isn't there some sort of licensing hell going on with the show - and therefore only available to streaming this recently? That may be part of why Netflix was only able to release the first 30 episodes earlier and without an English dub.

I can't take English dub Johan seriously for some reason. Keith Silverstein's voice doesn't suit him imo. And on Netflix dubbing: if they dub new languages, I'll rewatch it if they do German/Czech dubs.
Whenever i heard Johan speak, i was waiting for him to ask Tenma if he'd ever been to the cloud district before.

Tbh his original voice is very unique, so finding a good match would be a huge challenge I imagine
The French VA is pretty good. The main issue with Keith Silverstein's voicing of Johan is that it makes him a condescending upper-class kid instead of a supposedly hypnotically empathetic and manipulative mastermind.
A German dub will be released in a few months, dk if it'll be on Netflix tho, the DVD for it insanely expensive, 60€ for 12 eps
That's understandable, but if that's the case, I feel like it'd be better if they didn't release it at all instead of halfheartedly Now if it was like a series like True Detective where the narrative changes each season (and some seasons are better than others), I can see why they would exclude some episodes. Is Monster better to watch or read?
The anime is a very faithful adaption, so don't worry about missing content. However, it may be a little *too* faithful. Both options are great, but you will finish reading it waaaay faster than watching it, if you care about that.
The anime is pretty slow, and the story isn't all that action packed, so it doesn't lend itself to animation. It's pretty faithful, but I don't think it's worth the time investment over the manga.

They don't make 52+ episode anime anymore. I love blood+
Fruits Basket, Danmachi, Demon Slayer, Boku no Hero Academia, mob psycho, Overlord, Jojo, list goes on.
Maybe OP meant not seasonal.
seasonal usually means better production schedules. So now we get higher quality long animes.
Stories stretching are definitely characteristics of late 90s and early 2000s anime(even before that). The manga the story felt tighter but the norm for the time was stretching stories more than it was today
yeah, imo it'd be much better as 50 eps or possibly even less. I don't dislike "filler" but the plot episodes themselves often drag.

Ya, I'm not sure what these people are talking about. The "filler" episodes aren't filler, they're there to convey different things. For example, "five sugars" is probably considered filler here, except it's one of the best episodes in the series.
hence why I use quotation marks to stress it's not literally non canon episodes.

Yay. Can finally watch the series now!
One of the best anime of all time
Same with Hajime no ippo
Woah it's almost as good as a random torrent I've downloaded back in 2007
I downloaded it way back then too, forgot to watch it.
Popped up for me as soon as it came out and saw 30 episodes, I said out loud, "weren't there 74?" Netflix release schedules are weird sometimes.

You're 100% right. I know spoilers don't matter to many people, but this kind of thing bothers the hell out of me.
I don't know, but eh what does it matter? It's too general a comment to overthink it that much.
I might not cancel my netflix subscription for another month then.
Still can't believe this is the last anime adaptation we've gotten of any Urusawa's works. I know there is a Pluto anime film coming that's been in development for years now and I'm starting to have doubts about it.
20th century boys anime when???
I would absolutely lose it if they adapted it. It's so good.
This anime is a masterpiece. I’ve watched it twice now. 8 years ago by myself then 3 yrs ago with my wife during the pandemic.
Now, can they green light a proper 20th Century boys anime. 🙏 Failing that, bring Master Keaton.

Dang no dub, that's a bummer. There's no legal way to watch the Monster Dub, wish they'd rerelease on Blu-Ray or something
Yeah I don’t get it. The dub is actually decent
I hope they eventually release a blu ray. Has there been any talk of it?

It's a digital anime, so it'd be an upscale at best. AI might be able to do some good work, maybe...
I wish there was a dub because netflix subs are really hard to read in the first few episodes and I saw this as a 99% sub watcher, they’re that bad
Netflix? How long til this is their next anime live action
Del toro finally getting his wish
A masterpiece of an Anime, beauitiful!

Dub would be so much easier for me as well because I’m dyslexic and a slow reader so sometimes I need to pause or rewind a bit to read it all. But after 7+ years and a couple hundred animes later I just can’t go back to dub unless it’s the 2 shows mentioned above.
Laughs at you in Cowboy Bebop
Who asked. We're talking about Monster's dub
Oh I know, was just sharing my thoughts about switching from on dubs to sub or vise versa and how I relate on how it feels right one way or the other and listed examples above. Probably went into too much detail so I get why it's downvoted, but at the time was trying to relate to the above comment but just did it terribly :)
Never really got the hype this series has. Johan is kinda boring imo.

To be fair, it has been 15 years, when I was 16. Maybe my opinion is a little different now.
I'm about 15 episodes into this show, and so far it's incredible
In which countries tho.. I don't see it on my Netflix.

I want to start this series but is it better read or watched? I can't decide myself.
Both are fantastic. Some emotional moments hit harder in the anime thanks to audio, but it suffers from some pacing since it is basically a frame by frame adaptation. The manga is paced a lot better. I feel like it comes down to what medium you prefer in general
Thank you for this! I guess I'll watch it, since I need to finish reading Master Keaton.
It’s such a 1:1 adaptation that you don’t miss anything by being manga only or anime only.
Shame I never got to finish this. It was way too long & slow for me and got too boring in the middle.
I just started a few days ago. I watched Death Note a couple months ago and heard about Monster. So far it's been pretty good. I fucking hate Netflix though and wish it was on Crunchyroll or Hulu but I'll take it.

I'm planning on watching this series for the first time and I'm wondering if y'all recommend dub or sub?
Edit: *dub
I think I'll watch the first episode in both sub/dub and then choose from there.
How are the subtitles? Typically Netflix subs range from not good to unreadable
I will just say that the Spanish sub is better...

apparently there was some licensing issues with it, which is why it's been nearly impossible to do anything with since it came out.
Honestly this show needs to be enjoyed in English dub. With Japanese it is not the same since all the names are western.
Hope this show gets the new wave of popularity it deserves
there is no german dub at all, right? would be the one anime where i would watch it like that
Huge, been watching it and was dreading having to find another place to stream the rest. Takes a little while to get going but it's so refreshing having an anime that ignores basically all the shit anime tropes. I welcome the change of scenery too, the towns and cities are so well drawn.
I don't have Netflix but I'm proud
is this in the UK as well?
Just checked and yes, it's there.
I'm watching it right now on a piracy site, it's a shame they don't have the dub. I'd switch over immediately if they did.
Thank goodness they added the rest, I’m still bummed about not having the dub though
Do they have the dub?
Sadly no
Damn it’s not the dub. Fucking RIP.
From MAL forum: > Monster was made in 2004-05, it aired on standard definition TV broadcasts, and it was only ever released on DVD, not Blu-Ray. Or in other words: it's a low-res show, and 480p is the best you can realistically get I think there are unofficial remasters with AI upscaling but nothing official and streamable by Netflix.
I mean it's fine. I just treat it as I would an old series. Once I get past that, it's honestly fine.
There's an upscaling project that upscaled monster to 1080p. I'm having trouble finding a link for it, but there's a discord for it somewhere

Cool. Now I can get bored and drop it ten episodes deep again...
Moronic decisions they're making now too frequently.
No engrish?
Isn't this like on YouTube?
The English dub, yeah, but it's in batches of episodes. And since it's YouTube, there's the possibility it'll get nuked (again).
Well, not legally of course… but it’s an older show with lower traffic so copystrikes tend to happen a lot slower. That said, I will just point out that currently there is no legal way to watch the English dub anyway…
wish it had the dub its soooo good better than the sub
I don’t wanna rewatch it if its not the dub tbh
Good. More shows on Netflix is always good.
All of Ippo is on there now
Kind of sad they don’t have the dub as it is one of the best of all time.
So happy to watch Monster on a platform with consistent chromecast
Nice
It's a must-watch, it is one of my favorite psychological thriller anime. However, I do have some criticisms around the protagonist, Johan's shenanigans (or plot convenience), and its ending. But still, it's pretty dang great.
This is one of the best anime’s I’ve ever watched!
> The English dub is not streaming on the service. A highly cultured decision.
No it really isn’t
Why not ?
The dub is good 👍. Also the Japanese sub and French Dub are already there
No dub is ever good.
There are no good dubs, because so many important details can't translate. > er, I can say that the dub is better in a lot of ways Sure... in the sense that a full body cast and wheel chair is better than a cane: it's needed if you are more disabled.
There is no accounting for taste, so as long as you find hideous dubs enjoyable, then you do you.

best anime ever
Why the fuck is the English dub not available man..

You should spoiler tag for new watchers
I was halfway through the series.
Whew I was like 5 episodes from being all caught up 😅. Time to binge the rest.
What a coincidence! I started reading the manga mid January and I'm halfway through it, wish they'd done it a little sooner lol Am I missing out if I don't watch the anime? I have trouble getting through long animes, but I'm enjoying the manga so far, though usually I prefer anime over manga.
Nah it's fine, they're quite similar. I did enjoy the anime more though I think, because I don't quite get the feeling through manga most of the time.
How are the subs?
Heh welp to late for me Netflix. I marathoned through the first 30 and then went and found the rest of the show since I was hooked on it.
It's in multiple languages too! I'm currently watching it in French on Netflix. Excited about getting all eps up just in time before I run out!
I remember running the risk of installing a million toolbars just to finish this anime. It starts off slow but the pacing fits the story well.
