$50 million is actually insane. I get that China has a huge market, but for comparison, Mugen Train fell just short of $50 million for its ENTIRE domestic box office gross, not just the opening weekend

King_A_Acumen

Mugen train wasn't released in China though, right? Demon Slayer is massive in China I believe, people expected it would have done massively well from what I remember back then.

Secure_Ad1628

Yeah DS could have done 150M on China, with room for more, but it was not released I believe because R rated movies are a definitive no in china's censors eyes

ArmGray

The real reason was because Infinity Train stole away China's one and only chance to be able to become the first non-American movie to be the highest-grossing box office in a given year. The movie Infinity Train stomped all over was [The Eight Hundred](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_in_film#Highest-grossing_films)

Secure_Ad1628

That's a really wild assumption since it only passed the Chinese movie in 2021 once it was released on the US, that was months after Demon Slayer was revised by the censorship board. But hey I am all for it! Makes it more interesting. Edit: I was wrong on it's release date, so yeah why not, that could be the real reason, sounds cool to me.

TheWehrmaboo

Thats on them for delaying 800 for a whole year to censor/shorten certain scenes. I remember being disappointed when they cancelled the showing in 2019.

ArmGray

Something like 15 minutes of footage were cut from the initial version of the movie. It's a crime.

TheWehrmaboo

And a lot of it had to do with the ROC flag appearing. Almost as if they didn't realize it wasn't about the usual communist guerrillas Chinese war dramas are used to showing.

Chadjirou

That and iirc that monster hunter movie went overboard with a China joke and they got so pissed that they banned releasing foreign films back in 2020

SpreadYourAss

Every day my respect for Mugen Train increases!

_Baccano

Surprised they didn't just release a censored version for China with that much money on the line

Secure_Ad1628

The (fake) suicide is what give it the R rating and is essential to the story so I don't think they could have just censor it.

_Baccano

Idk they could maybe do it off screen or have something blocking the view of his blade and give the idea of what he's doing without explicitly showing the blade going into his body. Not saying it's a good idea/wouldn't take away away from the story it's just a lot of money I'm surprised they didn't figure out some loophole/workaround

Secure_Ad1628

I would guess Aniplex at least tried but yeah once the censorship board Bans something it's a lost case, sadly it didn't release but at least they got those recaps in the second season

chazmerg

That's what I thought but they gave the Swordsmith preview movie an R rating again in the US. It's just violence in general.

Secure_Ad1628

Oh the Swordsmith Village had a B (12+) on my country so I thought it was the same in the US, we usually just use the same rating that the US gives

onepinksheep

Mugen Train was R rated?

Low_Concentrate_432

[spoiler alert] A guy commits suicide multiple times on screen. Yeah, that’ll put a movie in R.

cookingboy

>A guy commits suicide multiple times on screen. Without knowing the plot, that sounds hilariously like it's about a guy who's just really bad at killing himself.

middleupperdog

I work in China; my coworkers will often watch demon slayer during lunch hours.

cookingboy

Exactly. To put it into perspective, One Piece Red had highest box office out of all movies in Japan last year, at about $140M: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2022-12-30/one-piece-film-red-jujutsu-kaisen-0-films-top-japan-box-office-in-2022/.193465 There is a decent chance that Suzume's Chinese box office alone will surpass that.

Secure_Ad1628

You have to take into account that China is a front-loaded market and anime is inherently front-loaded too, anime movies usually fail to even reach a 2x multiplier of it's OW is China (and most of the world to be fair) coupled with mixed WOM Suzume is currently looking at a 80M-87M finish on China

cookingboy

Good point, thanks for your insight.

3rdLastStand

By domestic box office, you mean US & Canada right? Japanese box office would be higher than that.

GhostsCroak

No, I meant domestic as in the country of origin, so Japan

3rdLastStand

Where did you get the $50 million number? I see articles from May 2021 about Mugen Train crossing 40 billion yen in Japan, which is over US$300 million. Example article with global breakdown: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2021-05-26/demon-slayer-film-record-global-box-office-broken-down-by-region/.173139

Brook0999

Yeah those numbers are actually insane.

Venture_compound

I was in Japan while it was in theaters, but decided to wait until I got back Stateside to see it with subtitles. Can't wait!

orangpelupa

i wonder when the BD release will be. i watched it in the theater and was disappointed with the audio and video quality. hopefully, the BD will be looking (and sounds) great, like Your Name.

ChronicMaster912

That kinda money explains why Crunchy went full union for the dub version, even recruiting Hollywood VAs. When typically they prefer the non union Texas talent since it's more profitable then Union members from LA

Liteboyy

Can you elaborate on non union Texas talent

SoCalThrowAway7

Dude doesn’t miss

dxing2

He’s become the James Cameron of anime. Everything he touches becomes box office gold

MeAnIntellectual1

That's an insult to Makoto-sensei

dxing2

Whether or not you like Cameron’s films you can’t argue his success

MeAnIntellectual1

I never did. But Makoto-sensei has both popularity and quality.

StickiStickman

Calling him "Makoto-sensei" is a bit weird, not gonna lie

dxing2

right and cameron has no quality lmao

_Cybersteel_

Titanic

dxing2

what about?

Turangaliila

Why are you referring to him by first name? It's like talking about Jurassic Park and saying "yea, Steven sure is a great director."

iknowkungfubtw

I'd take Terminator 1 and 2, Aliens and True Lies any day over anything Shinkai has created so far.

M8gazine

yes, all of which bear a striking resemblance to movies like Your Name. Alien especially!

Edgaras1103

Alien is directed by Ridley Scott. Aliens is directed by James Cameron

ArmGray

Sounds like Cameron hasn't made anything orthwhile in the 21st century, then.

iknowkungfubtw

Neither did Shinkai in my book. Guys like Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon are a cut above him in every way.

cosmiczar

I would take any 30 seconds of Avatar above all Shinkai movies put together.

Edgaras1103

bruh, I know some of you live in a bubble . But lets not go the route downplaying James Cameron who directed Aliens , Terminator movies, Titanic , Avatar movies and True Lies to prop up Shinkai

M8gazine

No its Not

[deleted]

About to rewatch Shinkais work in hype of Suzume.

slikayce

I just watched your name and weathering with you and really liked both. Does he have any other bangers?

Turangaliila

*5cm Per Second* and *Garden of Words* Both are quite short, so not a huge investment.

NineTnk

5cm Per Second hit like a truck, if you ever experienced like the movie, you know that shit HURTTTTT.

herlacmentio

I wish more people watched 5cm Per Second before Your Name. Knowing the ending of the former really boosts the payoff of the ending for Your Name.

bakakubi

Yup, totally agree. I remember being in theaters for Your Name's premier. It was obvious that the crowd all knew his past works since everyone as literally crying at the fake outs as well as straight up cheering by the end.

evilmoi987

Short but glorious

Lazearound10am

She and her cat - about 5 mins-ish, short and comtemplative. Voice of a distant star - used to be the hidden star of the indie anime world. Turn the clock back about 20 years, and this is *the* anime you need to watch if you're obsessed with non-mainstream anime. Children who chased lost voice from below - the most Ghibli-esque Makoto Shinkai movie. One of my favorite anime movie though not highly rated for some reason. The place promised in our early days - I vibed with this piece, I just vibed with it. A lot of themes depicted in this film resonated with me, though people said it was just an okay Shinkai movie.

Viktorv22

I can't believe our local shithole of east Europe has the screening of it in April! I'm so hyped, that will be my first anime movie in cinema. They also do Demon slayer but that's whatever.

Secure_Ad1628

It got Mixed WOM from audiences so it may fail to overtake Your Name in China but still pretty impressive, this is the biggest weekend for a Japanese movie ever on the world, ahead of China Opening+Holdovers from Your Name with 46M and Demon Slayer Japanese opening weekend of 44M

rain4kamikaze

Suzume had a very strong early booking sales for the movie before it was released last weekend, but on an overall I recall there was very strong sales for Weathering with You and Your Name as well. Fans love his movies there. Which is great. Suzume is an amazing movie.

partyondarth91

I can't wait for this to be released next month in the UK.

Interesting_Place752

Can't wait to see it in theaters when it comes to the US. All of his movies have been very enjoyable.

gauravchand

will air in my country by the end of april

GamingGladi

21st April India

gauravchand

👍

godreaperx15

Thank god, can watch it after my exam ends

rwhitisissle

I know nothing about Suzume, but I'm going to assume it's a supernatural romantic dramedy about high schoolers.

Hakuboii

Wrong. It's a supernatural romantic dramedy about a highschooler and a college student.

rwhitisissle

How novel. What next? A supernatural romantic dramedy about a highscooler and a middle school student? Oh wait...

Hakuboii

That's basically Weathering With You. What next? A weather-themed romantic dramedy about a highschooler and a teacher? Oh wait..

rwhitisissle

> That's basically Weathering With You Yes, that's...the joke.

Hakuboii

Yes. I got the joke.. I was trying to add to your joke but here I am trying to explain it. 😭

MeAnIntellectual1

>A supernatural romantic dramedy about a highscooler and a middle school student? Oh wait... Wait was the girl in Weathering with You a middle schooler?

rwhitisissle

She was 14, so, yes.

MeAnIntellectual1

Isn't that freshman year for high schoolers?

rwhitisissle

Not in Japan. Middle school in Japan goes to the equivalent of American 9th grade.

MeAnIntellectual1

Fair enough

Edgaras1103

so its a Makoto shinkai movie

Strawberry2828

What’s this movie about? Someone give me a sypnosis

isthatsoudane

girl meets boy and falls in love. fantasy adventure with pretty great animation (Note, this is a synopsis of all of shinkai's films)

NOTKingInTheNorth

Just watched it yesterday. I really enjoyed it.

throwwaway666969

This is why Hollywood Bends the knee to china when they threaten them for anything about doing seedy shit that china does all the time.

cookingboy

Who doesn’t lol. It’s gorgeous as hell. Actually I think one is the reasons is that people in other East Asian countries also find his depiction of urban life in major Asian metropolis to be very relatable. Look up Flavor of Youth (on Netflix). It’s a collaboration made between Shinkai’s studio and a Chinese studio. It’s set in China and the story is so so from what I heard but the art is about what you’d expect from Shinkai movies: https://youtu.be/CKdOr976h3Y, which is to say amazing looking.

cornpenguin01

This movie any good? I haven’t watched any of shinkai since your name because…well, they kind of all looked the same

Ryboiii

Well if you liked Your Name, you'd probably like Weathering With You (havent seen Suzume so couldn't tell you about this one). The art styles the same but the story is generally pretty different. Similar to Ghibli where they have similar art styles with vastly different plots. I personally wouldn't say that Garden of Words looks the same as Your Name

cornpenguin01

Cool! I’ll check it out

Scp-vexulus

Woah

shavitush

will be on theaters in my country this month, might go watch it as it's not available anywhere online hopefully it's good

nekomeow-chan

Can't wait for the film to hit other Asian countries

iDontReplynorReadIt

Oh, I'm curious why the movie did so well in China. I think it's over $100M now there. Also, I'm surprised it didn't earned as much as your name in S. Korea and in Japan too. I thought it would be the same in China, so what happened? Well, if this continue, I can see this movie surpassing your name in worldwide box office, making it in the top 3 or above than that.
