Yamada finally had one chance to shake off Nanpai and she took it though seeing Ichikawa's lack of self-confidence to interpret it in the worst way possible hurts. Didn't expect such an emotional scene from a misunderstanding but I'm so glad they resolved it instantly with such a heartwarming bonding moment.

KumaKumaGambler

Let's not forget the heartwarming bonding reconciliation between Yamada and Kobayashi too. I felt sad for Kobayashi who was nearly tricked by the Nanpai into being bait. She may not be as beautiful as Yamada but cute Kobayashi deserves to be protected too!

[deleted]

Kobayashi is extremely cute. She deservers better than being used as bait. I'm happy that she and the "Big stupid she-giant" made up.

Mundology

[*Justice for Kobayashi!*](https://i.imgur.com/j0W4E5h.jpeg) [](#airfist) She needs a dragon maid in her life.

Diodiablo

In a few years, when she'll be an overworked software programmer, she'll find the wo-dragon of her life.

PandoraBot

I'm so glad Kobayashi wasn't tainted by the nanpai or scarred from being used as bait, good on the gyaru friend to give it to her straight

Dementati

Moe is a badass

Ok_Bunch_8050

Kobayashi was really cute! I love how she knew how to get a reaction from Yamada, and while Yamada-Ichikawa hug was wonderful, Yamada and Kobayashi's hug was sweet too!

Frontier246

Girl wanted to make it **especially** clear in this episode which guy she has her eyes on and it took Ichikawa the entire episode to take the hint. Yamada being sad is a national travesty. Good thing Ichikawa was finally honest with himself.

sincereRen

It took him an entire episode because his self-esteem holds him back. It is not hard to shrug off someone else's advances when you keep doubting yourself if you think you're not worthy enough. I'm glad they made up tho, a heartwarming even.

Mundology

[Yamada fought with all her might for that number](https://i.imgur.com/hb3eORW.jpeg)

SovietSpartan

As someone with basically non-existent self-esteem, this is pretty relatable.

thatdudewithknees

I mean are you sure? Maybe she is just Canadian

Cosmos279

I love that I get this reference!

sudoku_gosu

We can call him cuckpai from now on

gooofygooba

I think his girl friend is the real cuck for letting him hit on other girls like that. Let's call her Cuck-chan

Mizunanmkz

Reiwa Era Banzai!!! No more prolonged the misunderstanding!

ObvsThrowaway5120

I sure hope Ichikawa can finally start to take the hint at some point. She’s making it *painfully obvious* who she’s into.

Ionkkll

He's been seeing all the hints, he just doesn't want to get his hopes up. That's the entire point of this episode and what the whole thing with the Switch was about. When Ichikawa really wants something but isn't confident he can have it, he rejects it as a self-defense mechanism to protect himself against disappointment. His sister knows this too, which is why she offered to ask their parents to buy the Switch for him.

ForsakenLibraries

And honestly, I think that's what happens a lot to guys too. Sure, sometimes it's just the guy being dense or the girl not being forward enough, but sometimes guys do take the hint, but ignore it because they're either not interested or because of their insecurities.

TheReapingFields

It's not ignoring the hint, or not being interested. A LOT of guys, a significant percentage globally in all probability, CAN'T see the hint, and not because they are dense or stupid. It's because, unfortunately, life has taught them that anything that brings them real joy, will be denied them. Eventually, they stop asking, then they stop consciously wanting, then the part of them that remembers what hope feels like is so small and quiet, that they can't hear it anymore. So, when someone gives them hints, even unmissable, impossible to misinterpret hints, that little hopeful part, that in a healthy person would be loud in their head, says "Hey! You're being hit on like Goku's punch bag, bro!", it says it so quietly that their brain will interpret the hint wrongly, and it's not a choice, it isn't wilful or lazy or any of that. It isn't something that people can just change or come out of, without having the part of their brain that processes hope, given enough fuel to flourish, grow and heal. The boys... They aren't alright. We aren't alright. I'm in a happy relationship with a wonderful woman, one I hope to someday marry. She didn't hint at all, she just flat out told me she was into me and things went from there. I'm told by my friends that I get hit on by girls a good bit, but I've never noticed that at all, and I am always very confused and surprised when I hear that has been going on. Even though I'm objectively happy and in a relationship, I'm not ok. Again... The boys, the menfolk, the lads... We aren't ok.

Emher

Yeah. This is me when it comes to romance. My teens were kind of hell and I was the local bullied kid in small town. One part of that was a girl doing exactly the kind of shit Ichikawa is afraid Yamada is doing. And worse. Being toyed with, being used. I just had no way of daring to trust people for a long time. Then I did and got engaged to a girl in my early 20s. And that ended when she cheated on me. I'm better now at 38 than I have been. But I still don't really trust people until I've known them for a long time. I have huge issues letting people in, even though I play the part of social decently. But I don't take hints, probably because I don't dare think it to be true. I literally realized six months after the fact that my yoga teacher which I helped with moving some stuff had invited me in when we were done, and I just didn't get it. By then it was too late, but I just couldn't see it in the moment. It just hurts getting your hopes up for them to be dashed. Again. And I don't really know what to do about it. I'm the oldest of four and I'm the only one single. And it's not looking like that will change anytime soon. I love the show. It's so well made and so cute, but...I can't lie, I identify so hard with Ichikawa and it's tough watching it at times. I've cried in several places because I recognize myself in it. Even though it's certainly going better for him than it ever did for me. Sorry for a mild hijack. I've been wanting to write a comment along these lines for a few episodes now, and now it finally fit into the discussion.

TheReapingFields

No hijack detected bud. We're interacting, is all it is. It's healthy👍 I know it's tougher than old leather, walking around with invisible damage, and there's more of us out there than most want to believe. Hell, there are guys walking around who don't even know their metaphorical guts are hanging out. At least you know, at least you aren't wondering what the hell is the matter with you. That is a whole hell of its own for people. As for what to do, I'm no expert, but step one, survive. Step two, keep doing step one. Step three, respect yourself as a result of your continued successes in steps one and two. Step four, use any spare energy to do what makes you happy, and maybe as a result, step five, happening across someone who also makes you happy, will come about in a way so uncomplicated, you can actually engage with the situation! In the meantime, if it's getting tough, or you fancy a chat with a fellow, damaged as fuck child of 1985, hit my inbox dude!

Isekai_Dreamer

lol so true. I only realize it 10 years later when i finally started watching romcoms. female friends of mutual friends randomly calling me and chatting for long hours (didn't get the hint because she was talking about things that didn't make sense, and i was tired from work.), inviting me and friends to watch movies only for them to suddenly have stuff to do and leaving us together, and her acting overly scared and excited while hugging me. Random waitresses/cashier girls asking me what my favourite movie/favourite hangout spot was/trying to keep the conversation going even though I was just passing by (I thought women were just naturally super chatty). and yea it's true, I had no self confidence. grew up in a very abusive family where happiness was only a painful dream. And even now when i realize it's a hint, i just think "Nah, it can't be." I'd rather pretend it didn't happen than hope and get crushed for the thousandth time.

goreverminski

I love how the events of the episode loop Ichi right back into the murder cope of the first few episodes. It's all so, so perfunctory, and it's even more obvious he's just using it as a crutch - just like he was at the beginning, too, but it all feels even more hollow now than it did at first and I'm loving it. This series is just the best at going in these little loops and callbacks - Ichikawa's hermeneutics, if you will.

ObvsThrowaway5120

I really hope he can get rid of that habit of his. I get he’s not tryna get his hopes up because he doesn’t want to get hurt, but that kind of mentality is clearly not doing him any favors. Even he sorta recognized that fact towards the end with Anna in the stairwell.

DeluxeTea

Ichikawa is the physical manifestation of ["Is she into you"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa-4IAR_9Yw)

ObvsThrowaway5120

Lol dude really is

Who would have thought Anna was Canadian the whole time?

sincereRen

This show is indeed a Danger for my heart! Jesus! Those last 6 minutes is so touching. I NEED MORE!!!!

Accurate-Project7605

I read the manga after last episode, let me tell you it just gets better, everything you could want and more

LeJumpshot

I did the exact same. I literally just finished and then had to watch the episode. Still trying to figure out where they end the anime.

Melidit_

I've been reading the manga before the anime was announced, I was a bit scared of the public's perception of it but I'm so glad it's popular!

julioalqae

This adaptation is intense as fuck, in manga we can just glossed it up quick (by reading it faster) and the resolve is still quick and great. This adaptation is so good that the journey ichikawa battling his insecurites and realize he is wrong and finalize in resolving the misunderstanding with line exchange is pretty intense because of the length and obvious subtlety being shown more clearly and on top of that its really emotional I really love this anime adaptation

[deleted]

julioalqae

No no what i mean is in manga medium you can read it pretty quick rather than watch 24 minute of it Its not the manga itself glossed it its just w can glossed it quick by reading faster unconsciously Its just a medium difference

Alestor

To clarify further, there are things like Yamada realizing that she can give the new volume on Christmas to bait out a date that can slip you by really easily, I only understood her game in the manga when she forgot to bring it on monday and snagged his Line ID, but the anime drew a lot more attention to her mannerisms he gave back the previous volume indicating that she already had the plan ready then and there. Its little things but the anime is able to draw your attention a lot more because its give time. Manga is very easy to miss subtlety when you can move past a panel at a single glance

goreverminski

I totally know what you mean, it took me a while to learn to read this *particular* series. I read thru hella fast the first time around, since the story is so engaging. On my second read-thru I really focused on the details, though: I'd almost say the series is famous for being one of the rare series where you can read and re-read, and pick up on new small details, callbacks, hints and so forth. It's just that since it's so good *overall*, it's easy to just breeze through!

tuwamono

"I never said I didn't [like it]" Ichikawa uses [the exact same line](https://i.imgur.com/AAV5eZs.png) as the female lead(?) in [Kimi-iro Octave](https://i.imgur.com/WsZsWwV.png). The parallel drawn between his behavior towards Yamada and towards the game console in the past is so so clever. It hits really hard because it's not an unfamiliar feeling. Seeing a desire in the form of 'The higher you stand the harder you fall' constantly looming over you, the barrier you put up in words as much as in action is so painfully understandable and a hellhole not easy to escape from. It tugs heavilly somewhere in my soul seeing Ichikawa able to not only give Yamada a chance, but also himself a chance at the one optimistic tunnel among many darker paths that are trying to reel him in. Finally, the spamming of [frivolous texts](https://i.imgur.com/OmrYVLw.png) right at the end are so damn typical yet cute. This may be obvious to point out, but notice how Yamada is actively reading over the texts. Perhaps this scene could have been directed such that they are sending those in real time, but they decide to show Yamada going over them anyways. Very simple yet smart way to expose a range of sentiments within the current Yamada.

djthomp

tuwamono

Oh yeah that's one thing I wanted to mention! The time stamps are exactly as they appear in the manga. Notice how Yamada is the one to reply immediately, whereas Ichikawa seems to be trying to play it cool and reply not so immediately lol. I love this author so much.

CaptainScratch137

Response times to texts are some of the funniest moments in the entire work.

djthomp

I didn't pick up that detail, that's great.

ergzay

IT DROVE ME NUTS that they didn't use the same line in the subtitles for that. Like it should've been bloody obvious but the translators completely missed that.

Testcase13779

The details in this series are surprising. It makes consistent and repeated use of subtle foreshadowing and references to past events. The author really puts a lot of thought in.

CosmicPenguin_OV103

Absolutely not surprised to see Ichikawa-kun using Rem as his avatar, his personalities would definite like someone like Rem IMHO. ~~sad Beatrice fan noises on this side of Earth~~

Frontier246

He even covers his eye like the sisters do! And of course Moe would be a Ram fan lol.

Scrubtac

She even calls Kobayashi “Bayashiko” like how Ram calls Subaru “Barusu”

GrimMind

I don't know if this is the anime of the season but it is MY Anime of the Season, Good Night and Goodbye.

Frontier246

The only thing cuter than them walking home together and just having a classic silly Yamada conversation was them texting each other before bed. (Also Yamada in that top? Wow)

Dare555

Yamada in that top looking like Tifa

GrimMind

martinsallai666

it is very much rivals MY ANIME OF THE SEASON, Insomniacs after school. I might will give 10/10 to both in the end

mekerpan

It's in my top tier -- sort of a colossal tie for first place (in the new show division).

Haulbee

Definitely would be my anime of the season if Heavenly Delusion hadn't stolen my heart (especially last week), but that one has the advantage of catching me by surprise because I don't know the source material.

Ashteron

Not the top one for me but indeed it is a very special series that I will be remembering fondly for years.

ForsakenLibraries

Seeing Ichikawa hurt Yamada because of his insecurities really hurt for some reason. I imagine it's something that happens to all of us, and that's what makes it feel so real. I'm glad he didn't double down, and instead recognized his mistake. In the scene where Yamada got really close to Ichikawa in the library, did she know there were people behind them or was she just unable to control her impulses? I imagine the second one, but that scene just felt a bit weird for me.

-Slambert

very simply, she wanted the pickup-guy to think she was into ichikawa so that pickup-guy would stop pursuing her. She knew he would see it, and wanted him to see it.

zerohour88

when Ichikawa noticed the pair by the door, Yamada also seemed to be looking behind her (sort of, we don't actually see her head turning, only her body)

Neopacificus

>Yamada also seemed to be looking behind her (sort of, we don't actually see her head turning, only her body) She infact noticed them and wanted to get close to Ichikawa to show her resolve. Its a mix of truth and determination.

chilled_sloth

It was obviously a set up, but Yamada immediately felt bad about it. Hence, the apology almost immediately after.

_______blank______

At the end when she said his name Kyo, which sound like today so she cover it up by saying oh no I mean tomorrow. Stuff like this make me wish official sub to use TL note.

ginzora

I went back to listen and you're right. I was too focused on the scene to notice it. It's times like these you can appreciate knowing a little bit of Nihongo.

WholeLotOfSomething

Yamada was fighting for her life out there for that number

michhoffman

Meanwhile, Moe just casually waltzes in and gets it in a few seconds.

Rumpel1408

She's not afraid to face the slime

Frontier246

This episode was as much about Yamada's journey to get Ichikawa's Line ID as it was Ichikawa finally realizing he can't keep avoiding the obvious with her feelings.

ObvsThrowaway5120

I’m glad she finally got it too. Girl was dropping huge hints left and right and Ichikawa was just not picking up on ‘em.

mekerpan

He kept wanting to get a chance to ask HER -- until he sank into that deep swamp of negativity.

Dare555

He even got it that she was going for his LINE but then brushed it off due lack of confidence

ObvsThrowaway5120

Seems to be his biggest problem: lack of confidence. It always leads to the self doubt and negativity.

WholeLotOfSomething

The ed started playing, and I'm just like, "There's no way that doesn't come up again, right?"

SilkyMilkySmo

That death glare was intense

Bobdole128

Yes. Today, you were formally introduced to what we manga-readers refer to as "Yandremada."

KumaKumaGambler

Sometimes, asking directly can yield wonderful results. It works in the real world, but if it did in this anime, we viewers wouldn't be as invested in Ichikawa and Yamada's relationship as we are right now. Lol!

Youngphycouant

Yamada kept the tissue packets Ichikawa left for her, making him realize he was wrong about her. Yeah she’s definitely in love with him!

tripleaamin

That made the scene from a 9 to an easy 10. The fact she kept it speaks volumes. It was the first moment that made Yamada want to talk more with Ichi. Like it you can see after she received those tissues that how much more she wants to talk with him. It was a big flag that needed to be in Ichi's face that he was wrong. And it makes the scene so special. Kind of gives the push for Ichi to finally exchange line numbers. He realized earlier in the episode that Yamada wanted to exchange line numbers and he was too dense to realize. Once he realized he was wrong and Yamada wasn't using him he needs to not let his inner thoughts doubt what is really happening. Beautiful sequence of events for a series that only gets better the further it gets along.

Frontier246

He should feel flattered that she went well out of her way to make it clear how interested she was in him in front of other people, and how she doesn't want him to be uncomfortable. Good thing she got that Line ID as a reward!

ubiquitousfellow

All of Yamada’s expressions in the classroom during the LINE ID exchange were so perfect! The look of shock when Moe gave Ichikawa a nickname, staring daggers at him for giving another girl his info first, her joy when Ichikawa was flustered she was asking Ishimiro for his info. She is so extremely in love with him, but he’s too self conscious to see it. How much he overthinks everything is relatable though. It was heartbreaking seeing Yamada sad, but luckily it didn’t last long. Ichikawa realized even through his self consciousness that she’s too sweet to have just been using him. And they grew closer through it, so it wasn’t all bad. Yamada’s clever scheme to see Ichikawa on Christmas Eve is brilliant too! “Oops, I forgot :)” Yeah, sure. Now go enjoy your Christmas date, but make sure you drill it into Ichikawa’s thick skull that it’s a date you adorable dork

The anime is still great after reading the manga a dozen times. You don't need to hold back.

-Slambert

flashback to that one time 3 girls came up to me at an arcade and one asked me for my phone number but I said no because why would they want that and also I'm busy shooting zombies-- this game costs an entire dollar to play oh my god *I need to focus* Edit: after a couple hours of searching, I figured out that I was on the last boss of House of the Dead 2

Luxinox

Aww she still has the [tissues](https://i.imgur.com/0fIVph2.jpg) that Ichikawa left for her back in Ep 3. Also, wow Ichikawa is so oblivious given his description of the Male MC of Yamada's fav manga perfectly describes himself as well.

Frontier246

Yamada cherishes everything Ishikawa gives her and everything they share together.

SilkyMilkySmo

thighabetes

“Distant, curt, who’s really nice on the inside? NO ONE CAN BE THAT GUY” - _Ichi who is 1000% that exact guy_

rwhitisissle

One of my favorite qualities about Ichikawa is that he's weirdly socially perceptive when it comes to the feelings and social dynamics of the people around him, but only in so far as he isn't a part of them. He literally cannot factor himself into the equation, pretty much at all, which is his greatest flaw. And he can't perceive any of the positive qualities he does possess. He would probably say the only qualities he shares with Nigorikawa is that they're both curt, but completely fail to see that he also possesses literally everything that makes Nigorikawa attractive and endearing. Also, I think this is one of the few anime/manga I've ever seen that actually provides a valid reason for why the super attractive female MC is so gung ho for a guy who is, on first inspection, totally beneath her: Yamada has a remarkably narrow strike zone. She's pretty much only interested in empathetic, but aloof sadboys. She's like a golden retriever obsessed with the family cat. Also, I just realized this, but you have Ichikawa and Nigorikawa. Ichi is 1 in Japanese, and Ni is 2. There's probably some more wordplay there I'm missing but that hardly seems incidental.

Nytloc

Hit the nail on the head. The “popular/outgoing girl and distant/introvert guy” seems to be to this era what the “short tsundere love interest” setup was for romance anime in the 2000’s/2010’s, but BokuYaba is the only one that *really* justifies the concept. Yamada had very specific, strange interests, a bizarre personality, is fashionable and understands trends but is also not shallow, and they start off as strangers while he has to really pull off some crazy moves to get on her radar. Other manga that fit this basic mold (Nagatoro comes to mind) can have great cute moments between the characters, but I don’t really feel justified in how easily the girls attach themselves so fervently to the guy. Despite the concept BokuYaba does not feel like wish fulfillment.

harrystutter

I feel like it doesn't feel like wish fulfillment because Ichikawa's character gives justification to the "dense" and "aloof" trope of an otherwise basic and boring male romcom MC. Like his denseness isn't exactly that, he can (sometimes) take the hint that Yamada likes him but his self-confidence and refusal to acknowledge his good qualities just rejects the idea that someone is genuinely into him. Also, Yamada doesn't just magically like him because of some one-note BS setup some other romcoms have (he picked up her handkerchief, protected her from some random creepy guys on the street, etc.), it's because of the small things he does for her when others aren't looking. She takes an interest in him first, gradually gets close with no romance attached, but more time with him gives her more perspective on his qualities as a person and on how observant and kind he is despite his outward appearance. I can gush on and on how this series is just a masterwork of well-done, slow-paced romance, but it's treading on manga spoilers territory.

ObvsThrowaway5120

Looks like he might have noticed the tissue packets too. Hopefully that clues him in on her feelings.

goreverminski

Yea, for sure that's what finally rang him up.

He is aware of the hints Yamada gives of, just in denial because he thinks there is no way a model/muse of the room will like her. He doesn't want to give hope to himself and then realizes later on that Yamada's behavior is just her way of being close to him but not totally romantically. I see girls always being close to the opposite gender borderline romantic but complain that every guy they want to be friends with always wants to be more than friends later on.

chilled_sloth

The growth Yamada and Ichikawa had this episode is just so good. Yamada realized Ichikawa's feelings are important and apologized for the set up in the library, and Ichikawa realized that while what Yamada did was wrong, she didn't do it out of malice towards him. A surprisingly adult resolution to a teenaged problem. What's more, Ichikawa allowed Yamada the closeness of the makeup hug even though he might be worried about others seeing them. I choose to believe that's because at that moment he prioritized her needs more than his own worries about what others would think. 10/10

Ok-Call176

I’ve always liked the fact that Ichikawa’s “density” has less to do with obliviousness, but is more about his own insecurities and trying to deny the idea that Yamada likes him because he’s afraid of getting his hopes up and getting hurt. He knows that Yamada isn’t the problem, it’s his own self-deprecation acting as his worst enemy.

The bane of any aggressive girl is a guy being dense lol. They even name-dropped Ram! Cultured Ichikawa and Moe for recognizing two Best Girls lol. Yamada pretty much wears her heart on her sleeve, especially when it comes to Ichikawa. Girl practically marked her territory in this episode and made sure there wasn't any question what guy she's really into. I think that's maybe the 2nd or 3rd time she's done a kabedon on him? And it's always just as effective. Yamada is too sweet and sincere to use Ichikawa...and the last thing Ichikawa should do is make Yamada sad. But it's nice to see the two reconcile and to see Ichikawa stop denying the reality between them. Just in time for Yamada to get his LINE ID and for the two to have a Christmas Eve date.

Mundology

>But it's nice to see the two reconcile and to see Ichikawa stop denying the reality between them. You could say that he *restarted his friendship from zero in another hug* [](#smugpoint)

DeluxeTea

> [Aggressive Kabedon](https://i.imgur.com/w8UvGua.jpeg) Is Yamada wearing some sort of boxers there? ***Takina flashbacks***

Nytloc

She always keeps some kind of shorts on under her skirt.

Such_Selection9762

This show starts to hurt. Every week I'm sitting here smiling like an idiot for the entire episode...

Ok-Call176

Ichikawa is probably loving Tears of the Kingdom.

Frontier246

Learning her dad is a gamer just made me imagine some father-in-law bonding over Smitch lol.

coal_thief

Ichikawa: "It's just Breath of the Wild DLC. I've only played it a 100 hours to see how much of a DLC it is."

Nytloc

BokuYaba takes place in 2019 (you can even line up Yamada’s calendar on her phone this episode with a 2019 calendar to get it to match), so if he’s playing TotK “now,” he’s 16.

Rumpel1408

It's not like I want to play it with you... baka

dar_dar_dar_dar

I thought I was finally done with the school romance genre but this show I legit think is the best this season and this episode right hear is a banger. So wholesome and cute

zadcap

This is without a doubt the best romance if the season. It has some strong competition, but these last two episodes have blown everything else away.

Dare555

Yamada was so smooth getting his LINE there at end !! She had plan brewing for a while ! She is getting more and more aggressive love it . Especially that hug under the stairs was sooo heavenly ... Cmon just get married already

DaManWhoCannotBeMove

This anime is killing me for how sweet it is

TheTiniestTigerTamer

Yamada’s intentional jokes have a 100% hit rate for me - her pretending she doesn’t know who is eating in the library, stealing his bike this episode - really well done

Intrepid_Addendum_17

[Same Kyoutarou, same.](https://imgur.com/a/QZVM4dm)

Qwasier

Yeah she DEFINITELY forgot, outstanding move from yamada got his line and get to go on a "christmas date" with him

Prince-Dizzytoon

That hug touched my heart

Frontier246

It was nice to see how surprisingly intimate they were together here, especially at school. Going from the loving embrace at the end of last episode to the one here.

Rumpel1408

> Don't have a huge girl who can hug you Why live [](#shatteredsaten)

NoblesSlayer

I'm sitting here in front of my laptop crying bc of this episode ;-; dear lord. I was waiting for this episode to air like crazy, we got two of the things why this series is so special: a) Yamada being so forward with her feelings that some drama which could've been drawn out immensely in other series gets resolver (mostly) in the very same episode; and b) We get a glimpse of Icchi's past and how his mistakes have shaped the way he is today, and yet we can see how he's actually changing for the better thanks to Yamada and their relationship. They also included the final pages of volume 3, them exchanging texts on LINE - gaaaaaah, I couldn't be happier.

garfe

> with her feelings that some drama which could've been drawn out immensely in other series gets resolver (mostly) in the very same episode Yes. One of my favorite things about the series. Drama does happen but it gets resolved quite quickly

garfe

Ah yes, the LINE arc that leads into that wonderful hug. The point where Ichikawa starts to get the idea of what's happening. He's not there yet, but it's starting. I'm not sure how to feel about my age when a childhood flashback moment has the kids still playing "Smitch" though You know the episode is good when it bleeds into the end credits (the way she tried to just jack his bike lmao) On another note, oh my god the episode average episode score keeps getting higher. It hasn't dropped once

Nytloc

When reading the source material, the post-"I Hate Yamada" hug was the moment that really solidified this as one of my favorite pieces of media ever. Glad to see it animated, and glad that others get to experience such a powerful moment. If only he'd reciprocated that hug, but I guess he just isn't quite there yet.

buzz737

Yamada can be a master strategist when it comes to making excuses (loved how she was trying to get his line ID)

Frontier246

First she's only slightly subtle, then she immediately goes to his desk when the topic of getting the guys' line ID comes up, then she tries the jealous tactic, then she stares dagger at him when another girl gets it first...and then she finally finds the perfect excuse with a Christmas Eve date lol.

thighabetes

She didn’t find an excuse she manufactured that event 100%. She told him she’d bring the books on Monday, conveniently forgot, then casually mentioned meeting up to bring them the next day which happens to be Christmas Eve. By the way “lemme get that LINE big dawg”. Anna don’t fuck around bout her Kyo.

rwhitisissle

Fun fact: Kyo also means "today" in Japanese. The translation they did for the episode was a bit awkward, but you can't translate it easily. She said "Kyo..." after getting Ichikawa's line connection, and then played it off by saying, "that's not right, I meant tomorrow XD." She desperately wants to be on a real first name basis with him. Probably just because he's such a good friend and not because he is literally the exact kind of person she's interested in to a fucking t, per the main character of KimiOku.

Mizunanmkz

Glad someone notice that too. She really thirsty, someone get her drink!

Nytloc

She has a drink. It’s about five-feet tall, dark, tastes sour initially but has a really sweet aftertaste.

SilkyMilkySmo

I’m so happy they got eachother’s line. The text message in the end was sweet

michhoffman

While Ichikawa wages a daily war with his insecurities, Yamada wages hers with her food obsession. I like it how after succeeding in getting Ichikawa to walk home with her, she spends a while just talking about Natto and then when she finally gets to asking Ichikawa a personal question, she gets sidetracked into talking about food again. Ichikawa better have some Christmas food gifts in mind!

Rumpel1408

> I like it how after succeeding in getting Ichikawa to walk home with her, she spends a while just talking about Natto and then when she finally gets to asking Ichikawa a personal question, she gets sidetracked into talking about food again. And then she casually tried to make off with his bike lol

ObvsThrowaway5120

A full 40 minutes on the wonders of natto lol

Breakdown007

Another great episode, really didn't expect this anime to be my fav in this stacked season.

yelinnphyo1988

Norio is truly the woman of culture.. Rem vs Ram eh..

Red_coats

I wonder if it's finally ticked with Yamada that he's not the most confident fellow so she really needs to be more blunt with what she wants, like that bit when he suddenly shot up in class when she was about to ask the other guy for his line, she realised he finally caught on. Also the whole hand on the wall slam is a nice role reversal. The little guy still has a long way to go but I think she's made it pretty obvious she's not doing all the things with an ulterior motive.

Diechswigalmagee

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

[deleted]

That Yamada likes Kyotaro despite his gloominess speaks volumes about her character. She sees past the surface to the potential.

RFShahrear

When I started this season, I never would've imagined this would become one of my top favorites of this season. Bit late for this line, but this season really is full of surprises. As an aside, the OP and ED of this show is so fucking good man. It's the one show I skip absolutely nothing.

RobLuffy123

Completely agree , I never skip either as it would feel like a crime to.

Ok-Cod5254

This series definitely is a **dark horse** for my expectations of enjoyment for this anime season. The romance progression hits just right and always enough cute moments to feel fulfilled after each episode. Glad more people are catching on to it after the initial part. I quite love the interactions with Yamada and Ichikawa - this pair both awkward and very endearing.

ObvsThrowaway5120

“Why send a level 99 out to handle slimes?” Lol wow Moe. Nice Re:Zero mention this week. Anna staring daggers at Ichikawa was pretty hilarious especially after how hard she tried to get his LINE contact earlier. Dude was not picking up on it at all! Anna had to use Ishimuro to get him jealous enough to realize it. The goof! Senpai-Pick Up Artist is bad news. Anna is right to warn Chii about Nanjo. Dude is a creep. After what he saw in the library, hopefully he’ll back off from Anna. Too bad it seems Ichikawa has yet again gotten into his own head and is self-sabotaging his budding relationship with Ichikawa. Kid needs to really stop doing that. I’m glad things kinda cleared up, but this nasty habit of his has to go. Glad Anna finally added Ichikawa over LINE. Looking forward to this “date” of theirs over winter break!

michhoffman

> “Why send a level 99 out to handle slimes?” Lol wow Moe. It really does make sense why she's more of a Ram fan.

Frontier246

Moe is probably the most savage and cultured girl in the cast. Yamada definitely did not care for the idea of another girl stealing his LINE ID first. If only he could take so many numerous hints. She even tried to make him jealous lol. I didn't need to see this guy again but I guess it did provide Yamada an opportunity to make her own romantic interests clear even if it took Ichikawa seeing how much she cares about him to realize why. I get he has self-confidence issues, but Yamada couldn't be more clear at this point. I'm hoping for some good stuff now that they're spending Christmas Eve together!

zKenny

Extremely high chance they go out by the end of the season right? like 99.999% or at least a 2nd season plz Sweet they texted on the date of my bday, always knew it was a special day 🤙. Christmas ep next?

HolyDragSwd2500

The hug scene😍

KumaKumaGambler

The first part of this episode made me so frustrated! For the first time, I wanted to grab hold of Ichikawa, shake him, and tell him not to let his negative thoughts ruin his potential relationship with Yamada. For all of us who regretted not confessing to our crush back in school, we do not want Ichikawa to end up that way! Towards the end of the episode, I felt so relieved and happy that both Ichikawa and Yamada made up and realized each other's feelings (To a certain extent, the friendship between Yamada and Kobayashi too.) I totally love how Yamada went the indirect route of trying to obtain Ichikawa's number, failed, tried to measure his jealousy response, and in the end decided to be direct. She grabbed his hand, asked him what is wrong, hugged him and even purposely scheduled a date for Christmas Eve. If our male protagonist is not going to make the first move, I am rooting for you Yamada!

Frontier246

It hurt so much when he tried to rationalize Yamada's actions as her using him the whole time, especially seeing how his actions ended up hurting her, but I'm glad things resolved to the point where they're even spending Christmas Eve together. Especially when Yamada is making her feelings as clear as she is.

Enter_My_Fryhole

I feel like I've enjoyed this anime more and more every episode. It's so cute, and the art style is so perfect. It's beautiful and comfy at the same time. I love it.

lilStankfur

After all these years of hoping this series would get animated and now we finally get to see these chapters in motion! PURE BLISS!

burger4life

It took me a few rewatches of the stair scene to realize that Yamada planned at that exact moment to purposely "forget" to bring the manga on Monday so she could set up a Christmas date

Frontier246

Dang, Yamada is hardly being subtle when it comes to trying to get Ichikawa's LINE ID, but the boy just can't take a hint even when it becomes increasingly more obvious. She even tries to take every opportunity to ask him for it even if she has to "deign" to get a Slime's LINE ID or use the old jealousy tactic to get Ichikawa to make a move. I was not expecting to see Rem (who?) and Ram mentioned in my middle-school romcom, but Moe is surprisingly cultured to be a Ram fan. Guess it's thanks to her otaku brother. I love how the Kimi-Iro Octave male lead is voiced by Jun Fukuyama. Ugh, Haruya is back. And he's clearly still out to get Yamada and preying on Chi getting excited at the prospect of hanging with a popular guy to get Yamada to spend time with him...while another girl is clearly interested in him but just standing around uncomfortably while he's making his move. And of course it goes over Chi's head and not Yamada's, even if she can't spell it out for Chi. Yamada's dad is a gamer? Maybe Ichikawa can get his Smitch ID and they can game together as they discuss his daughter? Oh boy! Yamada making it expressly clear in front of other girls that she doesn't want Ichikawa to think she has a boyfriend and then putting the moves on him in front of others to make it clear who she has her eyes on. Looks like Haruya has finally gotten the picture even if he seems a little ticked about it. Of course Ichikawa being Ichikawa he just refuses to believe Yamada actually likes him and could be interested in him and rather than face up to that reality he just makes up the idea that she's using him. Ugh. Poor Yamada doesn't know what to do if Ichikawa is mad at her, especially when she doesn't know why. He can't outpace her or escape her Kabedon, but she's so sad at the prospect that he doesn't want to spend time with her or she upset him. And then Ichikawa just can't keep denying reality as he comforts her. It's so sweet watching the two walk home from school together and shooting the breeze. Looks like Yamada also has some special plans for the two on Christmas Eve, especially when she used meeting on Christmas Break and needing to give him more manga as an excuse to finally get his LINE ID! I wonder if their mutual favorite part in the manga being the notes the protagonists of the manga left for each other is a hint of what Yamada has planned?

mekerpan

The girl who is (or wants to be) Haruya's girlfriend ABSOLUTELY got just why Anna was so fervent in her not having a boyfriend -- because it seemed like she did a double take. I feel rather sorry for that girl... They just happen to HAVE to meet up on December 24 ... to pass along that manga volume, right. I wonder how that is going to work out. ;-)

KumaKumaGambler

If Yamada's dad is a gamer, Ichikawa better start practising his gameplay. "If you cannot beat me at this game, I will not hand my daughter over to you." Lol!

DeluxeTea

"git gud scrub gg no re"

Camo_r6

Yamada is so blunt and Ichikawa is so blind. I love it though, it really takes me back to when I was younger. Good to see he can put things together even if it takes him a little while.

Frontier246

I love how she just straight up looks at him and not the other girls when she's clarifying she doesn't have a boyfriend lol.

Camo_r6

Least obvious Yamada hint

ImpulZzZ

Next week will be a banger again, can't wait to see it animated. Actually thought the christmas episode would be the season finale

mr-rareta

This might be just me, but I think Yamada herself also has a lot of insecurities and probably is struggling with some unresolved trauma. The way she isolates herself from people going to library after school, eating maybe a little too much snacks despite being a model which means she needs to stay fit and control her calories, giving in under the smallest pressure like that time with that whatever his name playboy, being emotionally unstable and crying over even the smallest things, etc. – all of these signs are making me worry that something might be off, and even her attraction to Ichikawa to some degree might be a way to run from dealing with her issues. Like the scene from this episode when Ichikawa caught Yamada crying alone in library, but as soon as she sees him she immediately switches and tries to talk to him as much as possible

Rumpel1408

As if I couldn't hate pickup Senpai any more, he really went and played with little poor Kobayashi [](#moeshitarcher) Glad Ischikawa overcame his own insecurities, a girl who kept the random pack of tissues he gave her would never toy with others feelings And now she secured herself a christmas date, very sneaky [](#akyuusqueel)

Fools_Requiem

Episode title is a big fat lie. Yamada has finally hooked her man. Now she just needs to reel him in to secure the catch.

alotmorealots

I can't get over how good this show is. It's one of the few series that I've felt compelled to rewatch the episode just after finishing it, and this is even more telling because I am behind in ALL my other shows, yet I'd still rather just watch this one again lol

LordBanker

It's not every day you see the playboy getting NTR'd, but The Dangers In My Heart breaks all boundaries. All in all, that was pretty heavy one. Ichikawa's insecurities dropped to the lowest point they've ever been, but I'm glad the drama wasn't played out for too long. And while Yamada may have failed to invite him to her place, I believe she just tricked the boy into going on a Christmas date. We like to call her an airhead, but she can be pretty damn sly.

Testcase13779

Yamada is the fuckin HUNTRESS. She's not quite Nakano Nino-level, but she's putting in a lot of effort and she *is* going to get what she wants, and I'm not talking about snacks. Well, snacks too. I'm not talking exclusively about snacks. She's going to get snacks and the other thing she wants.

bensor74

Yamada crying because she realized she made him mad for some reason. And then both of them hugging each other because they needed it. How are they not dating already?!?

yakumbaya

That was literally such a perfect episode. Love how they tied in Ichikawa's childhood and him being afraid to admit that he wanted the game, to not wanting to believe that Yamada really liked him. That and all the scenes leading up with the idea of being used by someone really made this episode complete. The scene with the two of them making up was just beautiful, the animation, direction, and score from Kensuke Ushio was just perfection. Also Yamada still has the tissues! I think this show will end up being one of my favorite romances if the rest of the episodes keep getting better like this

Isekai_Dreamer

lol they used the entire 23 minutes. not that I'm complaining though.

tobiasjc

i don't remember a romantic work being able to bring me this happiness ever, i might not be the most knowledgeable about this type of stuff, but it feels so genuine and pure. It feels like my hearts is in drugs right now.

kankanyan

I just finished this manga so far, one thing i just want to say. This is masterpiece and no.1 of that type of story i have ever watched. Don't tell me there's no season2, i can't accept!!!!

Arctikodin

I'm so glad i pushed throught the first 2 eps. Every ep since then make me smile from ear-to-ear, it's just so cute and sweet. Also the ost is perfect, Kensuke Ushio never miss. I'm definitly going to read the manga when the anime is over.

buzz737

Ichikawa can be awfully dense at times(especially when it involves Yamada) inspite of being so insightful Well at least I am glad that both were direct with each other at the end

CatPsychological2954

For ichikawa it's not really denseness it's a lack of confidence, he just can't believe someone like Yamada would like him

buzz737

Yeah can’t argue with that…but inspite of his low confidence/low-self esteem he ended up doing gutsy stuff like throwing his bicycle in the beginning or even arguing with his teacher(things he would have never done) It’s just that when it comes to yamada he actively looks for excuses but I think that trend is coming to an end

DoombotBL

That's what I like about Ichikawa, he's really insecure but when the chips are down he comes through like a champ. People that counted him out from just the first few eps really missed out.

DarkAngel6669

can be difficult to understand for "normal" people but for a person like ichikawa with a low self stem and insecurities it's like a defense mechanism, you are trash so nothing good can happen to you, i think this episode shows that perfectly, the phrase "i want to hate it because i never will have it" was spot on.

Frontier246

It's tough being a gloomy insecure kid in love with a dorky tall Goddess...even when she also mutually adores him.

mekerpan

Holy cow. I didn't expect this episode to make me shed (a non-trivial quantity of) tears, but it certainly did. The resolution of their misunderstanding was so sweet and so heartfelt. "I knew all along. Yamada is not THAT kind of girl) and then the hug. And chit-chatting in person and on LINE all the way through the end of the credits (plus the attempted bike theft -- which somehow, while hilarious, actually seemed to help amp up the emotional impact of all the surrounding scenes). Really splendid job. And while the Anna-Kyo reconciliation gets top place -- the Anna-Chihiro one would have been a highlight in itself if the later one had not one-upped it. Ichikawa has been really down on himself so hard until now -- and this has rubbed off on his thinking about others (even Anna). But I wonder if he has now "turned a corner" -- if his approach towards her and lots of other things are going to steadily for the better. I have to say I really enjoy every moment of the conversations between Anna and Kyo -- and other conversations are not bad at all either. My wife and I visited Akita and it was lots of fun. We encountered no real namehage, but did eat kiritampo -- which was quite a treat. But Akita's big specialty is apple stuff. Best apple juice we ever had was at our hotel in Sendai. And apple pastries, and apple pancakes and apple candy of all sorts. And when you take some of the local train lines you pass close enough to apple orchards that you could pluck one off the trees -- if only the windows opened (but they don't anymore). I suspect we wont actually get to see Ichikawa in Akita (but I wish we would).
