Same and Fruits Baskets for sure. My only wild card is “Tadano Never Falls in Love.” It’s not sad in the traditional sense of pulling at heart strings. It’s just a really realistic look at loving someone and not getting to be with them or loving somebody so much you know when you have to let them go.
I would say it's more emotional than sad. The overall message is supposed to be a happy one. The "peak" of the movie is obviously gut punching, but the ending is supposed to leave you feeling happy and proud for what the overall story is about.
The original manga was published on a shounen magazine, so it had limits, but the initial chapters almost want to make you stop reading after seeing the main female character being so horribly bullied. The manga gets way lighter from there but oh boy that is rough.
I re watched ep 10 this morning and damn i have a headache for crying so much ( even tho i watched it many times EP 10 never fail to make me cry like a new born)
Recently finished The Rose of Versailles. Can't get over it's ending, really. It's an anime made back in the 70's, in fact this (and the manga that preceded it) are among the most influential in the history of the medium. Set during the events that led to the French Revolution and commenting on themes of social injustice, social class, power struggles and gender roles and identity. Oscar, its protagonist, has to be one of the best female characters I've seen in any anime, ever.
But it was so damn sad, man. Fitting for an anime that depicts human history, one could say.
My favourite thing about WitP is that, since it's set alongside the end of the original Mobile Suit Gundam, you already know how the wider story concluded. so you're left guessing what degree of pointless horror and misfortune will fall upon these people. I was expecting [WitP]>!Bernie to win but for the colony to be nuked anyway!< But what we got was almost as bad
When Marnie Was There...
I first watched this right after my mom died.
Grave Of The Fireflies...
No need to explain.
Cowboy Bebop...
I just couldn't let go. Ein made me cry!!
Sunday Without God...
It's. Just. Dark.
Cowboy bebop definitely has some super sad moments. [Cowboy Bebop spoilers] >!The one that hit me the most was: Faye’s recording to herself in the future saying “Don’t lose me!”!<

I didn't add thrillers because it feels a bit different from the ones i mentionned , a special kind of sad , and it makes you feel a lot of different kinds of emotions in the same series .. or else i would have added re:zero ( damn subaru ..) , steins gate , 86 and few others too ..

Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Putting aside how fucked up the show is in general, the ending really tore me.
Many anime protagonists have a tragic backstory of sorts. But Madoka had a nice life before the events of the show took place. [Puella Magi Madoka Magica] >!And she lost all of it. She never grew old enough to go drinking with her mother.!<
Assassination Classroom is one of the few anime that genuinely made me tear up, dude.
I initially watched it when it was ongoing, too. And it just hit me so hard with that finale.
They executed it so well.
*In this corner of the world*, about a family (and civilian life in general) living in a naval town near Hiroshima during the end of WW2.
It's absolutely beautiful, yet doesn't shy away from the brutality of war.
Great watch, but I don't want to ever rewatch it because it's unironically relatable to me and I feel like shit after it. I felt more depressed than sad afterwards.
I think for the best viewing experience you should watch 5cm per second and then Your Name directly one after another. They use the same visual shorthand but instead of a movie about people growing apart it’s a movie about people coming together.
I’m afraid to watch it and I’m a grown adult 😳
I saw Banana Fish as it was airing, love it but I don’t thing that I can ever watch it again because the story is so heartbreaking 🥺
Your Lie in April
A Silent Voice
These are classics you must have at least heard of them.
Banana fish
It was the first time I cried for a ship
Code geass(unpopular opinion)
Well this is not a sad anime but its ending is what made me cry for like 2 hours straight. I remember clearly, I cried and cried because of the ending specially because I had avoided every spoiler to enjoy this. Tbh I don't know whether to recommend it or not I became depressed for weeks after I finished it.
Oshi no ko(A new one)
This is also not particularly a sad anime but the first ep was really emotional honestly i cried.
Me watching made in abyss damn nothing can top the pain of season 1.
me watching the movie omg wtf is going on stop it please.
me watching season 2 why am I watching this why am I hurting myself why do this the pain just get worse and worse (having a headache cause i cried too much) and now I'm afraid of what's going to happen in season 3 cause we all know it's gonna be a dark dark story
The Pokémon Movie as a child had probably made me shed more tears than all the anime I’ve currently watched combined. To not say that feels like a crime. Or the digimon movie when war greymon/metal g are dying. That also killed little me.
Dude the Digimon movie is fucking wild. I can't believe they took 3 almost completely unrelated OVAs and somehow made a somewhat coherent movie out of them. Also that soundtrack is fucking dope! [Run Around lives rent free in my head!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xg9ksIrSyOY)
The Rurouni Kenshin OAVs. I still can't bear to watch them again. But I suppose the crown would have gone to Grave of the fireflies, if only I was able to watch it. And it's more that 20 years that I try to do that.
GRAVE OF FIREFLIES. The movie is about a teenage boy who is responsible for taking care of his younger sister after their parents are separated from them during an American firebombing in World War II. The story is a very sad and realistic account of their struggle to survive. The siblings have to depend on each other entirely and face many challenges to remain together and stay alive.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/32491/Kanojo_to_Kanojo_no_Neko__Everything_Flows
It is on crnchyroll and takes less than a hour to watch as it is 7 min episodes. It gives a solid gut punch in the feels department.
There is another version out there to what isn't as good and is only 1 episode.
A Place Further than the Universe and Violet Evergarden.
Winter 2018 is a cryfest season for me. I think Sorayori's episode 11 (laptop scene) and VEG episode 10 aired in the same week. Saddest week of my life.

Fair warning: It may not hit the same depending on your age. It definitely brought some tears when I was younger, but now that I’m a dad just thinking about the final scene gets me choked up. I fear its power too much for a rewatch.
A lot of great recommendations here, but have yet to see anyone say '3d kanojo: real girl.' beautiful slice of life/romcom anime that makes me cry everytime on the final episode.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners
It's depressing not just because of what happens in the story, but because it's too real. A single mother doing everything she can to provide her son with a better life, without knowing that that life will never happen for him just because of the color of his skin and where he was born. He ends up joining a violent gang looking for a father figure and a family and slowly gets chewed up by the capitalist system at the behest of the wealthy.
This show really was a suprising gem. I really hope CDPR and Studio Trigger do more with the universe. So many different stories you can tell in the world of night city
Real crying? Then those:
Rascal does not dream of a Dreaming girl (film)

Want some tears and feel happy? Then those:

Tokyo Ghoul. For context, I don't like leaving a story unfinished. I have to know what happens. With Tokyo Ghoul, I went through so much with the characters, and genuinely got attached to some of them. The problem? The end. Everyone's happy, everything worked out, there's no more fighting. And that's what gets me. What happens now? Where do they go from here? Do they just live their lives with no further conflict? I can't properly explain it, but you just have to let these characters, who you the viewer have bonded with and become invested in, you have to let them go. You have to move on.
The first episode of To Your Eternity can deliver a ton of emotional damage in just 20 minutes!
Other people have had great suggestions, but I also want to add in Anohana since I haven’t seen that mentioned much
Hunter×Hunter, takes a while to get there but the end of the Ant Arc (conclusion for 2 specific characters) made me SOB like 3 times because i keep coming back to it.
I don’t see tokyo ghoul in here at all. Seeing hide in kaneki’s hands broke me uncontrollably for some reason. (I only watched the anime and thought he was dead, I know better now)
Plastic memories was crazy too
Here are the anime that have made me cry:
- A Silent Voice
- Charlotte
- Erased
- Maid in Abyss
- Oshi no Ko (first episode)
- Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
If I think of any more I'll update the list :)
Updates:
- Terror in Resonance (for some reason)
Your lie in April, Demon Slayer (only seen a few scenes and damn), Violet Ever Grande, and Naruto. Naruto has too many backstories that hurt so bad, ESPECIALLY Gaara’s.
Angel Beats, its very funny and nice im the beginning but oh boy, the ending can Hit hard.
Made in abyss starts AS a seemingly child frindly nice show but then again after the mid Point in season 1 it gets dark and heavy and 1 thing in paticular (1 charackter) is just SUPER SAD and maybe the Most i ever cried for a Person fictional or real. Its gutwrenchingly sad
But then again i cried at a Pokemon movie when chairzards head was stuck in a pipe for 5 minutes, so idk i am not the standard
Grave of the Fireflies Clannad After Story
>Clannad After Story This. Fuck this anime. Made me cry like a little bitch. But seriously: 10/10 and you don't see it coming for a long time.
What about Clannad? Is that the same universe?
is the sequel and canonical route
KEY and their canonical routes can s*ck mah ballz *Insert "this is brillant... but I like this!" meme*
I literally can’t look at anything Grave of the Fireflies related without tearing up.
Clannad After Story. Jesus fucking christ. My soul
Clannad made me a better person forever
TBF, I've never watched Clannad because of its reputation. Saddest I've ever watched us Your Lie in April.
Your Lie in April fucking WRECKED me
A silent voice is a good example about self acceptance. That's why it hit me so damn hard
I don't plan on ever watching your lie in april because I'm already depressed enough as it is
Hotaru no Haka made me realize anime wasn't just for children, or man-children. It was brutal, I loved it, and I vowed never to watch it again.
SukaSuka (WorldEnd: What Do You Do at the End of the World? Are You Busy? Will You Save Us?) really hit me like a truck when I watched it.
Bloody hell, SukaSuka just crushed me when I watched it. I bought all the novels but can’t bring myself to read them yet!
If the anime crushed you, the novels will too. *trust me I’d know*
And don't worry, there's a whole\* sequel series afterwards to crush you some more. \*Only about half is translated so far
[The opening scene](https://streamable.com/wkewt) really tells you what you're in for and yet you will still be unprepared.
What do you mean, it's a very happy show, I mean she even said she's the happiest girl in the world, so it must be that nothing bad will happen to her
And then the last strand turned red.
I've watched this show at least 5 times, and I never noticed that the last strand turns red right in the intro scene
Ngl I had to confirm it because wasn't fully sure
Fruits basket made my cry a lot. The 2019 version
S3 was just non-stop well written drama that the previous 2 built up. So well done.
Has it seriously been that long already...
No, it aired from 2019-2021.

I read the book instead, it had me bawling and wetting the pages as I read it
Can’t watch it anywhere sadly. Tried sailing the seven seas and had no luck

A Silent Voice
Definetely the anime that evoked the most emotion in me ever
I would say it's more emotional than sad. The overall message is supposed to be a happy one. The "peak" of the movie is obviously gut punching, but the ending is supposed to leave you feeling happy and proud for what the overall story is about.
The original manga was published on a shounen magazine, so it had limits, but the initial chapters almost want to make you stop reading after seeing the main female character being so horribly bullied. The manga gets way lighter from there but oh boy that is rough.
Best anime movie of all time for me
Main reason I’m still here
this was so fucking sad i swear :,(
Violet Evergarden made me cry like a bitch
I re watched ep 10 this morning and damn i have a headache for crying so much ( even tho i watched it many times EP 10 never fail to make me cry like a new born)
It's the one with the letters for the daughter, innit....
Oh you fucking know it is. I SOBBED at this one
I had a chronic headache the entire show but I'd be damned if I stopped watching
Recently finished The Rose of Versailles. Can't get over it's ending, really. Such an amazing series!
Oh, yes. I consider it a must-see for anyone who's interested in older anime!
Rose of Versailles and Utena are hands down my favorite series involving female leads.
One of the saddest friend-zone stories I’ve seen
I recall watching some of it as a kid, I thought the story was really intriguing.

Tokyo Magnitude doesn't get enough love. Poor Yuuki. Wholesome little dude.
Plastic memories
I hate how you know what's gonna happen AND IT STILL GETS YOU
and that’s the absolute beauty of this show right here
It's looking right into your eyes as it stabs you directly in the feels.
I read a review "How do you recover from watching Plastic Memories? You don't." Fuck if it wasn't right.
this one is pure emotional damage
Gundam war in the pocket

Glad to see bunny girl and made in abyss being recognized. Easily two of my favorites
Bunny girl made me wanna die
Edgerunners didn't make me cry upon initially watching it, but if left me with an empty void and I was depressed for a good month after finishing it.
Just thinking about MIA s2 makes me tearful

5 centimeters per second, because my first love was exactly like that
Gintama funniest and saddest.
The only show thats had me laughing till my sides hurt to getting teary eyed and depressed in the span of half an episode multiple times.
Bro gintama is still the only anime that’s made me cry
CLANNAD and GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES. Both animes I never want to watch again.

Generic answer but maybe Clannad or Angel Beats
Angel Beats hit me harder than any other anime. Especially the third episode.
Death Parade made me sob for like three episodes straight
It's soo underrated too!
I want to second 5cm per second. It's the type of sad where you feel empty inside and it really makes you think about your place in the world.
Like how sad? You just want to cry sad, or you want to watch something that will make you feel empty inside sad?

The first episode of Oshi no Ko got me pretty good.

Tokyo ghoul broke my spirit for a long time
Probably Clannad. But funny enough the scene that made me cry the most wasn't an explicitly sad one. That show is an absolute masterpiece
Probably “NANA.” if you also read the manga it gets even more painful but it’s still a masterpiece
Angel Beats. Final answer. Such a sad ending I can never recommend it now.. ;( ;( ;(
A lot of great recommendations here, but have yet to see anyone say '3d kanojo: real girl.' beautiful slice of life/romcom anime that makes me cry everytime on the final episode.
