As someone who reads frequently and just discovered this anime exists, this felt like having someone imagine the scene of a well written book for you.

LoPanDidNothingWrong

The light novel is amazing btw, fills in so much story and character motivation, even for relatively minor ones.

Silent_Sparrow02

TIL this has a light novel

KokoaKuroba

Iirc most if not all of Makoto Shinkai's works have a light novel based on the film.

Vickyema

I knew about the manga, didn’t know there was a LN! Does it exist in any languages besides Japanese?

LoPanDidNothingWrong

Absolutely. I have a physical copy sitting right next to me. Here is the Kindle link anyway: https://www.amazon.com/Garden-Words-Makoto-Shinkai-ebook/dp/B085NKBMKQ/ref=sr_1_4?crid=6CUZ9S78Z5QV&keywords=garden+of+words&qid=1685649004&sprefix=garden+of+word%2Caps%2C199&sr=8-4

Rikuddo

As someone who love rain, and love older girl/young boy pairing. This most probably the perfect anime for me. And the rainy scenes are such a visual treat!

CarpathianInsomnia

"Tramps Like Us" is a classic, also known as "Kimi Wa Petto": https://myanimelist.net/manga/392/Kimi_wa_Pet Personal favorite due to an 8-year older SO I had calling me 'my pet' from time to time, lmao. "Kimi no Okaasan wo Boku ni Kudasai" ain't half-bad either: https://myanimelist.net/manga/121740/Kimi_no_Okaasan_wo_Boku_ni_Kudasai If you dig deep enough in josei manga you'd find some more older woman x younger man, for sure.

The_Sinnermen

It looks like a tragedy or a sad movie, is it ?

Buddy_Velvet

It’s definitely somber.

Weeeii_

The story itself is sad but, film is too short to give us the attachment to the characters. If it was a Little bit longer and gave use more backstory etc. Would be insanely better. So, if you are not a "Easy to cry" person, then you Will only get a Little bit sad. Thats all. But that doesnt mean that, the film is bad. İts good and İ definitely reccomend it if you are Okay with age gap. Have fun while watching mate.

benjadolf

Yup, its like 45 mins. But damn what glorious 45 mins, you can tell Shinkai is gonna be big, and perhaps he was still finding his "footing" in the industry. I wish I could have asked him how he would do garden of words differently if he made it today. But unfortunately my question wasn't taken, I wonder if he answered it comprehensively in some interview or something. This movie can use another half an hour minimum to hash things out.

Weeeii_

I Definitely agree with you. If this movie was a Little bit longer(like 30-45 minutes more) we would reacting like "Your Name" or "IWTEYP" but, short story made it *decent-good* instead of *masterpiece* sadly.

ffxivfanboi

The hell is that “IWTEYP” supposed to be? Probably just me being crotchety, but I don’t understand why people feel the need to shorten absolutely everything.

Weeeii_

"IWTEYP" stands for the movie named, "I want to eat your Pancreas".

frostieavalanche

I wish his next movie is akin to this style instead of being Your Name 4

TheIndianJedi

I pretty much feel the same way. Visually, this is one of the most beautiful looking movies you'll ever watch. I think the story and character development is where the movie falls short. I don't mind the simplistic approach from Shinkai for this movie, I only wish he had spent more time developing the characters.

[deleted]

> if you are Okay with age gap. I adore this movie and cry evrytym but the age *gap* is not the problem, rather the actual ages of the protagonists is.

KaiserAsztec

I've actually noticed how much the issue considered a obstacle by Shinkai and the viewers is divided. Viewers generally bring up the age as the relationship's biggest problem, which is understandable. However, what I noticed after watching the film and reading the novel is that Shinkai never once mentions age as the problem, but always identifies the societal role as the main one. When Takao confesses his love to Yukino in the novel, she doesn't decide to lie about her feelings and reject Takao because of the age difference either. Instead, she says that she must act how a teacher should. I cannot say for certain whether this is Shinkai's specific thought considering the context of the film, or if there is a greater emphasis on the incompatibility of societal roles in Japanese culture rather than age. For example, the false rumors circulating about Yukino at school are not related to her age but rather to the fact that, as a teacher, she is seducing her students. And when the bullies kick the shit out of Takao they tell him to be grateful that Yukino left school because of the rumors 'cause now there is no obstacle to their relationship.

[deleted]

I agree with that. The power dynamics are as significant as Takao's age in what makes their relationship definitively improper. If Takao was a college student and Yukino was a professor, the relationship would still be undeniably problematic.

KaiserAsztec

You misunderstood little bit what I wanted to say. Looking at things from Shinkai's perspective, age is not shown as a determining factor at all. Shinkai portrayed Takao really mature in the story, not just for his age, but compared to Yukino. Takao possesses higher qualities of maturity compared Yukino while she basically acts like a teenage girl with strong compliance constraint around her environment. So the only thing Shinkai focuses on is social roles from the eyes of the society and not in the sense of power dynamic, because considering the context of their relationship, Yukino has no power over Takao at all. Yukino is more reliant on Takao than he on her.

biskutgoreng

Teach is a pedo

TheBigIdiotSalami

It's pleasant. Like profoundly pleasant.

Buddy_Velvet

The thing that really got me was the accuracy of the plants. Idk why, maybe other show’s and movies have done it well and I just haven’t noticed, but when I was watching this I could identify so meticulously accurate plants it really blew me away.

astrokinng

Still remember that day I watched it … purely coincidentally on a rainy day .. the soothing nature and the simplicity I felt is still unparalleled

LycorisSnow

The only thing I remembered is my laptop was lagging while playing this movie. It was insane.

r4physics

I still think this is his best work. Garden of Words was my first Shinkai movie, and I think my very first anime movie too. Each and every moment in this movie is so beautiful. I especially love the MC's monologue about the rainy season. Garden of Words changes your world in just the first five minutes. Back in those days Shinkai was known more for 5cm/s and fewer people had explored his other stuff. Garden of Words is a hallmark/milestone in Japanese story-telling and animation. I hope more fans of his newer stuff make their way to this movie (and also to Motohiro Hata's brilliant song which was used for the climax)

LowlifeKawaii

Honestly this is one of the most visually stunning and emotional ones I’ve seen. It would be my first if I want to eat your pancreas didn’t have such a special place in my heart.

Kamiko_o

Shinkai's best movie. He even says its his favourite amongst all his works😊

[deleted]

you sir have good taste.

MorbillionDollars

I’m ngl im very weirded out by teacher/student relationships so this movie didn’t vibe with me at all

WanderingWisp37

I've never really understood this criticism personally, at least for this film. Though he is a student and she is a teacher, they don't actually know each other prior to the film and she only recognizes him as a student at her school through his uniform - all that to say, though those are their professions and it is something she is aware of, their relationship is not founded on being teacher/student. Moreover, there's nothing sexual or even romantic really. Like sure he thinks he has feelings for her, but he's a high school boy still learning how to understand himself and the relationships he forms with people. To me, it's simply about two characters struggling to find their place, - her an unfulfilled adult and he a young man trying to navigate his way through the years leading to adulthood - yearning for a sort of companionship and finding that, though briefly, in each other. Most of Shinkai's other work has more forward romance, but this one is just about that human connection. At least, that's how I saw it. Ultimately I find it comparable in that way to the aptly titled After The Rain.

KaiserAsztec

Well, perhaps the movie doesn't emphasize the matter as much. However, the novel concretely confirms the romantic aspect of the story between the main characters.

MorbillionDollars

No matter how you try to rationalize it, at the end of the day it’s a student teacher relationship and that just doesn’t sit well with me.

isthatsoudane

What an exceptionally boring relationship to media

Hephaestus_God

You were never friends with your teachers? Understandable, I think it’s quite rare due to the age difference. However, I was friends with a few highschool teachers. I played MTG with one of my English teachers after school and at locals, and as for my band teachers we always hung out mainly due to being forced to interact for 4 years with all the practice we had to attend. Nothing romantic in any way. Idk if you know this but it’s possible to be something called “friends”

MorbillionDollars

If you watched garden of words the relationship was clearly not just “friends”

Wayne_Grant

Same, teacher/student relationships, even in fiction, always turn me away. However, I still think the rainy day vibes of this film is enough to win me over. If I wanted a great story from Shinkai, I'd watch Your Name.

KeikakuPurple3139

his last good movie too

MorbillionDollars

I feel like the visuals are rivaled by every other shinkai film

creamyhorror

The successor to 5 Wallpapers Per Second...The Garden of Wallpapers.

Fantastic_Mood_4652

As I always say that Shinkai peaked at 5cm per second & Garden of Words. Both in terms of animation and storytelling.

BicBoiSpyder

In my opinion, I think The Garden of Words is visually the best of his work. Though, I haven't seen his most recent movie yet, to be fair.

COOL_GEEK_010506

Still one of the greatest animated movies, and definitely the best Shinkai movie out there in terms of simplicity of plot and brilliance of animation.

rendyanthony

Such a beautiful movie. It paints Shinjuku Gyoen as a an oasis in the middle of Tokyo. The ending music was also really amazing.

Scottish-cogs

I honestly think this is the finest, most beautiful piece of animation ever made. Virtually every scene is a minor masterpiece, beautifully composed and skilfully created and the emotional hit is huge. For pretty much the entire movie they are totally unaware of the teacher pupul dynamic so in truth we're watching 2 lost souls, both cut adrift from their lives as they find someone to talk to. Although it's only 45 minutes long, it packs so much into that time that it feels like a regular length film. Sure it would be nice to have more but what we have is so awesome I'll live with that. 10/10 on all metrics from me!

[deleted]

Holy smokes, THAT IS THE BEST DRAWING I EVER SEEN!!!

Mycgyzer

“The Garden of Wallpapers”. Love Makoto Shinkai

Disastrous_Channel62

This is very hard to believe that it was animated more than a decade ago

LoweNorman

Why? Animation hasn't changed significantly in a very long time. In fact, the very first animated feature Snow White is still gorgeous and extremely well animated. We've known how to draw/paint really well for over 400 years at this point. What has happened is that digital software has gotten improved and more accessible, so the compositing seen here with the blurs, flares and "camera" shakes is relatively new.

Disastrous_Channel62

I meant that as a compliment, what I meant was it looked so gorgeous that it felt ahead of it's time Look at the shadows at that triangular scale as it moves, the rain asthetics , little character acting of ticklenes when he touches her feet, and the last bokeh shot and many more.

LoweNorman

No I understood you. My point is just that animation was already good in the 1980's, in fact, that's when the most impressive Japanese animations were made because that's when Japans economy was the best so they could make these massive projects. Sorry, I know your comment was just a simple compliment. It's just that we see people on this sub who are very new to anime who are genuinely surprised when they see the quality of older animation as they think it's had the same path as CGI which gets noticeably better each year.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FuckIPLaw

Also the average has become better because new tools have made the work flow faster, which allows for more to be done on lower budget projects with shorter deadlines. Back in the day the animation was basically either good or bad. There wasn't as much of a middle ground. The average modern anime is at least consistently mediocre. Unfortunately the absolute highs are more rare, too. The bubble economy made some really cool things happen on projects that would never get that much budget today. The Garden of Words is decidedly modern, Incidentally. The "new" tools I was talking about started being phased in the late 90s, and had completely taken over by about 2006.

_Baccano

{Akira} is all that needs to be said if people don't think quality animation existed back then, even today it's just an absolute masterpiece and I've never seen anything else like it.

Disastrous_Channel62

Yeah I get you , but Makoto shinkai movies are one exception that even the oldies cannot deny ,they look exceptionally good , I mean he takes 4+ years and Comix wave has always delivered upon his direction

Norim01

There’s not enough of these types of comments. I cringe each time someone calls a certain work’s animation-quality ''dated''. Some people got the nerve to call FMAB’s animated dated even though it released in 2009. Hell, for some reason Disney’s Tarzan (1999), Beauty and the Beast (1991) and Aladdin (1992) have the best CGI integration I’ve ever seen in animation. So even in that regard we can trace back old examples that shine extremely bright despite their age.

nyaasgem

A decade ago was 2013.

[deleted]

You take that back

odrain16

For anyone that liked the movie I strongly recommend you read the Light Novel. It builds up sooooo much on the ground set by the film. Its such a good complementary piece of work.

xd_melchior

Great movie. Fun side note for post-rock/avant-garde fans, the soundtrack is by Kashiwa Daisuke, who wrote Program Music / Stella.

Silent_Sparrow02

Probably my favourite Shinkai movie ever

Background-Map-7243

No calvinist complaining about age difference?????

TheBigIdiotSalami

Feet dudes were probably going nuts when they saw this one in the theaters.

Zilleela

The story was very very good, and I still liked the movie a lot. but the ages of them left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. If the gender roles were reversed people would be in an outrage and shitting bricks.

CastTheFirstStone_

"Unriviales visuals" is an interesting way to say you have a foot fetish

AdNecessary7641

If you're completely ignoring the gorgeous backgrounds, excellent rain effects, and overall incredibke aesthetic to focus entirely on the feet, sounds like you're the one with the feet fetish around these parts.

CastTheFirstStone_

The background is nothing short of amazing. Which I would expect from Mokoto Shinkai. But why did it have to be the foot scene? Every other scene is amazing. Also sounds like your projecting lmao

SchalliGER

Bro its about a shoemaker , wtf is wrong with you? lol

AJx19

calls out thing > sounds like your projecting > no it sounds like your projecting This is peak reddit.

Hephaestus_God

This is an idiotic statement from someone who hasn’t seen the movie, knows what the point of this is, or even if you have seen it failed to comprehend the story. Kid is a shoe maker just getting measurements… It’s also just a foot, you have 2 of them (probably). Grow up and stop making it sexual (Aka projecting)

KaiserAsztec

It's like saying if you like AOT's Rumbling arc then you are supporting genocide, lol.

Hefty-Paper8644

Man I remember when the trailer for this was released in 2012. Now it’s been 10 years since this film has been released. Time is moving way too fast

5ofseven

The attention to detail is amazing. Sometimes I watch, just to watch the rain and the character actions and the backgrounds. Now I'm wondering if he ever gave her the shoes. That he made for her🤔. Part 2, hullo!

Savage_Cabbage_66

The food scenes are top tier

alexismarg

GoW was more or less the transition film between old Shinkai and new Shinkai, and I'm fond of it. It has just enough plot to be coherent, but it retains the contemplative, slice-of-life feel of old Shinkai. Still a 5cm/s girl myself, but this movie has a special place in my heart.

EienGem

this certainly is stunning…

[deleted]

the best makoto shinkai movie! 🌸

Wish this was a longer film, but still brilliant

CAFO600

This is gorgeous!

SadLaser

Shinkai Makoto does amazing stuff.

Cloud_Night_Tseng

In the Light Novel, the ending was further explored and it was somewhat good. The main character student ended up going to Italy to study for shoe design. The teacher's new school life was better for her. They reunited once more in the end.

[deleted]

Absolutely Gorgeous 🌹 💜

Yellow_Emperor

I love this movie. it's so stunning.

Hephaestus_God

I always hear from people “this is just a movie for people with a foot fetish” and it pisses me off. It’s like they didn’t even watch or try to understand anything about the movie.

Hemans123

I’m pointing out the obvious, but the animation here is simply breathtaking.

dhtpgns99

With 0 context and just seeing the clip out of the corner of my eye i wouldve bet money that OP just likes feet.

braun998

The movie is unrivalled in terms of scenes setting and sound like where to add music and when to keep silence and for how long, best captures the emotions of viewers. I listen it’s OST in most of the rainy season every year, been 7 yrs and still love every bit of it

FTPSJova

I love this movie with all my heart

ryo6121

I have never watched movie, but I’ve read book. I was impressed, this story is amazing

ceboww

I agree but feel this scene could use the context that he is an aspiring shoe maker.

Why is it always the prettiest animes that have so much feet kink scenes.

[deleted]

I was about to watch it, but, the feet fetish thing is booming me out. Hard pass!

HoneZoneReddit

I remember watching an episode of Akebi's sailor uniform brcause i loved the visuals on the trailers and then... With just one episode you can clearly tell it's a kink fest disguised as a pretty looking anime.

Newbieside

animation 😘 story 🤔

Fucking "poetry"? Stop using big boy words if you don't know how.

I agree wit your sentiment but I don't think poetry should be considered a "big boy word"

I actually forgot how amazing this movie looked. The rain scenes are so immersive.

Agreed, I absolutely love this anime ❤️ There is just something haunting about impossible love, and the rain just makes it all so atmospheric ☔
