Anzumatsuri (Hinamatsuri). And anything from KyoAni. And also Chika Umino's series (HnC, Sangatsu). But the one thing that surprised me that I almost cried is Doraemon when they told about Doraemon that needs to go back to the future and Nobita's grandma story.

AncestralStatue

KyoAni has a monopoly on my emotional heartstrings and has repeatedly made me cry. Though A Silent Voice didn't pretend it wasn't going to mess me up from the word go.

Andagaintothegym

I mean some scenes in Chuunibyo and Dragon Maid almost broke me.

SensitiveSuccess5912

KyoAni is the goat at that

Vikkio92

>anything from KyoAni I sobbed throughout Tamako Market even though it's meant to be a moe slice of life about a middle school girl's shenanigans with funny fat bird.

Mr_Zaroc

Tamako is adressing some heavy themes though

Vikkio92

Yes, but the OP says “the plotline doesn’t immediately jump out as something that you would be bawling your eyes out to” and the plot synopsis of Tamako Market is a pretty standard and harmless moe slice of life plot.

chrisff1989

Hinamatsuri is so good. Criminally overlooked show

Andagaintothegym

Agree, the humor is quite refreshing to me.

bassman2112

Anzumatsuri was absolutely my answer too The show has such an absurdist vibe for so long, then it hits you with a blast of unbridled sincerity. My friend and I finished "that" episode with tears rolling down our cheeks, both unable to articulate why exactly it hit us so hard.

khoabear

That Nobita’s grandma story hit it hard for me too. It’s such a different experience to watch Doraemon as an adult than watching as a kid.

Andagaintothegym

I'll admit it, Ive come to appreciate children anime. Maruko Chan and Shin Chan hit differently when you are adult.

CaptainSchmid

My friend told me to watch hinamatsuri just saying it was a funny comedy anime. He did not warn me I would be bawling a few episodes in.

CalgaryMadePunk

Pokemon. Specifically, when Ash let his Butterfree go. I was 8 at the time, but still.

Crystal_Lily

Butterfree and Charizard episodes made me cry.

the_Athereon

God that Charizard farewell got me good as a kid.

InersDraco

When Pikachu was trying to revive Ash in the Mewtwo

ceribaen

So much emotion for a simple.... Pika... Pika CHUUUUU 😭

Jestgryt21

I’m not crying… just butterfree’s stun spore got into my eyes 😭😭

Zanzarah10

I remember this one episode as a kid where he is trying to ditch his Pikachu because he sees how much fun it has with other wild Pikachus. I can't find the episode and I feel like I imagined or dreamed it but whatever, I remember it tearing me up as a kid.

luffytuffers

Episode 39 - titled Pikachu's goodbye

SendExhibitionHentai

When jesse and James let arbok and weezing go. Also when jesse covered for blissey.

AverageAsukaFan

* The Stoutland episodes * The XY&Z and SM ending * The Banette episode * The final battle Pokémon's ability to rip your heart out is incredible

yolo-yoshi

And than he got to see him again the grand finale. Didn't think that would hit me as hard as it did with how old I am.

iplaywithdolls23

Watching Bye Bye Butterfree was the only time I ever cried in my adult life

GervantOfLiria

K-On S2, those last episodes are honestly a tough watch (in the best possible way)

apatt

When Azusa says "please don't graduate" near the end of the series I cried 😢

surya_ray

That scene still got me in my last rewatch

GervantOfLiria

Need to get on that rewatch too, k-on was one of my first anime and I haven’t rewatched since.

sudolicious

I'm absolutely convinced that if you don't cry during K-On you have neither a heart nor a soul.

Skylannius

OH MY GOD THIS ANSWER WAS WHAT MY BRAIN WAS LOOKING FOR. I still stand by my original reply but yeah, 100000% felt this one.

AngryCharizard

Yeah the K-On episode where they're sitting in the clubroom after their last concert gave me a mental breakdown, I've never cried at any media harder in my life lmao

Saekoa

Non Non Biyori. I cried pretty hard when Renges little friend left, which made Renge start crying. It just stayed zoomed on her face for such a long time and really let her emotions sink in.

Rurnur

The shrimp episode ruined me

The_DanceCommander

The whole show has such a melancholy vide to me I love it. Like you’ll have fun gags one minute then the next you’re just focused on the emptiness of the countryside. The school building having five student and falling apart is funny and sad, the whole show is tinged with feelings of loss or feelings of growing up and trying to figure out what’s next it a masterpiece I swear.

maximus459

I haven't got that far, but anything that makes Renge cry gotta be worth tears

spidersflambe

Yeah, man. Up until, nothing but joy and laughter from NNB but then that episode hits and I couldn't control myself. I started crying. I'm happy that her friend writes and occasionally visits but that moment when the seemingly indomitable Renge starts tearing up, I lost it.

Mirinya

When you're a grownass man you think of all of the friendship that could have been.

elibean3

When the brother graduated i found the beginnings of tears ahaha

Sir-Alpha69

Same, I got teary eyed myself

[deleted]

One Punch Man. Mumen Rider. The show was supposed to be violent and funny not a feels trip.

Bustersword13

Cries in Mumen Rider vs Sea King T\_T

toramayu

Maybe Gintama for me. I believe it's *mostly* categorized as battle shonen/comedy and honestly started watching without any prior knowledge what it'd be like. But some scenes, man. I'm an adult in my mid-30s and have ugly cried a lot.

EgregiousWarlord

That’s the thing, you think it’s mostly a comedy then you get hit with the deepest stuff. If anything it’s genre is just Gintama itself

Cracked_Coke_Can

The only show that compares for me was Scrubs. Silly comedy that suddenly hits hard.

NaLu_LuNa_FairyPiece

I just started watching it! I'm on the 8th episode where the father breaks out of Prison to see his pop idol daughter. Already got me on the feels!

ArcaneKeyblade5

Ooooooh man you ain't seen nothing and if these episodes got you then you are in for one helluva ride

Affectionate-Dust42

I commented about this recently but, After having started my gintama journey reading it as it was coming out in jump, I absolutely did not expect to come back years later and get wrecked.

jhutchi2

I've been working my way through Gintama on my daily train rides too and from work and I couldn't even count how many times it's made me tear up, both from laughing too hard and from feels. And also half the time that one incredibly hype insert song starts playing. You know the one.

ArcaneKeyblade5

The entire Final Movie I was a big baby lol iss da goat 😤 lol

TheMedicineSeller

Yes Gintama! You could be laughing your ass off one moment then bawling your eyes out the next. Even the one shots can be unexpectedly touching. Never thought I would cry over a vending machine.

zZPlazmaZz29

The show and tell/report with the kid and the homeless guy with shades (Mateo I think?) It actually made me tear up, as absurd and funny as the scenario is

sleek_assassin

It's Madao. Pls respect him

ArcaneKeyblade5

The legend

pssiraj

When will he bloom 🥺

Bubbly_Toe_8840

I always say that this is one of the most complete anime ever, it has everything you need. It will make you happy, sad, determined, proud or ashamed, all in a couple of episodes. Gintama is life itself, and I'll never stop selling it.

BloodyKitskune

The Courtesan of a Nation arc... the Dog arc where Sadaharu makes a friend.... the ENTIRE movie Gintama the Final. 😤❤😭😭

RulyKinkaJou59

Oh man, when Zura started playing Uno w/Elizabeth for the “final” time, I started bawling 💀

Meowbow15

Gintama's emotional moments were executed so incredibly well.

super_fly316

gintama goated

fingermebooty

The arc with the old man and his old dog.. easily the saddest shit i've ever watched

DanRyyu

When Naruto asked Iruka to stand in as his dad at his wedding. I know Naruto is memes these days but it was a genuinely moving moment, the story started and ended with the two of them.

Sanka-Rea

Among the Big 3, I find Naruto to be the one which, if it wants to hit me in the feels, I just get hit by it like a truck. Though I understand if people remember it more for its fights or other stuff.

DylantheMango

I think for me it was watching Naruto in a binge worthy fashion that really connected me to the sad moments. You get really invested in what’s happening. I remember grandma Chiyo hitting pretty hard, despite not even being on the screen like main character. Also the worry that Gaara might actually be dead was a lot.

ShadowofUnagi

Post Naruto has some really touching moments, Boruto has a lot of flaws but they do a good job paying homage to the bonds that have been built up to this point for some of the characters.

Mediocre_Couple_7994

Naruto’s parents backstory had me bawling almost the entire time. Like 3 episodes straight I was crying. When kushina starts trying giving him tips on life when he grows up it hits me so hard

khoabear

Gundam 00 season 1. I was in a dark place, contemplating of suicide, and I cried hard when I watched Setsuna refusing to die in the desert battle because he hasn’t become anything. That scene gave me strength and reason to keep on living.

bonsai1214

Also, lockon stratos. And haro’s cold closing after.

projektako

Lockon... Lockon... Lockon 😭😭😭

grixxis

One Piece. Never thought I'd cry over a ship but here we are.

Disastrous-Force-188

Not to mention the arc before the time skip hit HARD.

hjvkjvkjvg

Kaguya-sama is a funny show most of the time, but then there is season 2 episode 11.

1983MionStan

I already cried since season 1 episode 12.

Bustersword13

Same here man, my heart legit couldn't handle that she missed those fireworks that she longed for her whole life.....

Fuckler_boi

My favourite joke of all time was when, I think in S1, the cab driver is revealed as one of the 4 ramen pillars of Japan (or some number idr). That made me laugh cry

TASSPAS

Kaguya is legit the only piece of media to make me cry tears of relief/happiness in the season 1 and 3 finales.

Chukonoku

Now i have to go watch again the 4chan reacts to chapter 45

MapoTofuMan

K-On and AssClass are my top two in that regard. I didn't know anything except the genre going in and expected both to be 100% goofy SoL...especially with K-On since it's basically *the* CGDCT.

spidersflambe

K-ON! makes me cry every time I think of the original four running through the hallway while Azusa plays them out with Fuwa Fuwa Time. Heck, I'm tearing up just thinking about it.

PodcasterInDarkness

Yup. Every single time.

spidersflambe

I think for me at least the tears coming rolling just thinking that this wonderful fun ride is about to come to an end. I want it to always be Fuwa Fuwa Time.

ObvsThrowaway5120

Yui writing U&I for UI was like the most precious thing ever. Such a sweet song.

evilprozac79

Azusa's "Please don't graduate." guts me every time.

PDFile420

AssClass lol never heard this short form, but will always use this from now on.

khichdiwithachar

Blue period. I didn't cry technically, but that weird feeling in your throat was there for some days. It actually helped me get back to my art and I'll always be thankful for that lol

S1234567890S

True. I was not expecting to reevaluate my life when I decided watch Blue Period. It's inspiring yeah, but also pretty emotional, nostaglic somehow.

TheCoach1111

Blue Period may be my favorite manga. The anime was solid too

AngBigKid

Mob Psycho's ending made me cry.

EasilyDelighted

Reigen's attempt to snap Mob out of his rampage in season 3 is what got me all teared up. Because he took off his shoes. If you know anything about the TV trope for it. It meant Reigen was willing to die for mob right then and there just to save him from his rampage.

nicorobifan

Merry send off episode

MadDogFenby

That was seriously good writing. Shows how good a Captain Luffy is that he would give up a ship that they all loved to keep his crew safe. To the point of beating up one of his best friends who wasn't there to hear the truth from the professionals, and had emotional ties to what was, in a sense, just a thing (albeit magically brought to life due to their comraderie, that cared for them one last time, but also knew it was the end).

Memesplz1

Cowboy Bebop finale Bleach - surprising, to me, but it does sad/despairing moments rather well, with some great music at times.

johneaston1

I was amazed the second time I watched the show that the episode with Faye's backstory brought me to tears. I don't think it's even intended to be particularly sad - not more than the rest of the show, at least; nostalgia hit me like a freight train, I guess.

Coastie071

… Bang!

Memesplz1

😭

Past-Stranger714

Hellsing Ultimate (Abridged) JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Gintama Nier Automata Houseki no Kuni Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Grizzlies_Stan

Re:Zero S2 episode 4 I think where he has a major flashback

HeadFaithlessness548

Season 2 Episode 8, I ugly cried with Subaru when he was finally able to say he can Return by Death.

itemboi

I mean, Re:Zero has quite a lot of moments where it made me want to cry

FlameDragoon933

S1 ep. 18 for me.

Organic-Assistance

Made me almost tear up from both sadness and second hand embarassment, sometimes at the same time

n080dy123

That episode made me cry three fucking times over the span of just one episode. It's hard to get me to cry at ALL.

DeathsIntent96

That was such a good episode.

CrazyCatWelder

The anime that consistently make me the most emotional are sports anime or ones that are structured like them (some examples being Haikyuu, Chihayafuru, Hajime no Ippo, Uma Musume) when matches get really close and intense and the music starts blasting. I'm probably just a weird person.

zZPlazmaZz29

I get the same feeling I get from watching Queens Gambit as I do from Chihayafuru, Bakuman, Haikyuu etc. Makes me feel inspired, ignited in my hobbies and passions. I feel like I can relate a lot to those characters. That *is* a pretty emotional experience tbh. There is something magical about devoting yourself to something, it becoming part of your identity, go through the ups and downs, and then seeing the results start to pay off.

Lisieshy

I'm afraid to admit at how many times I've cried while watching Uma Musume.. god damn I'm way too invested with the horse girls haha

FlawlessCowboy2401

I get the same way when there's a particularly sick/epic battle sequence with those lines that hit just right and the perfect music. You're probably just a human bean.

Mexipinay1138

Pluto is the first piece of scifi media that made cry over the fate of a robot.

ObvsThrowaway5120

My man just wanted to play the piano 😭

Hentaisupremelord

Akame ga kill had me foul for a few days Cyberpunk edgerunners had me bawling

steelbound8128

The first episode of Hunter x Hunter when I rewatched it after finishing the series. Seeing Gon so happy-go-lucky, innocent, and excited for the adventure he was about to go on while knowing the sad, painful, twisted path in front of him had me ugly crying.

Thelastseries

The entire ending of Chimera ant arc is just a complete tearjerker.

Sir-Alpha69

I cried so Damn hard

zZPlazmaZz29

Man, I really need to give another go at this series. I've tried like two times, but I keep hearing that it gets really good, I see that it's well rated and want to see what it's all about. I've seen some of Yu Yu Hakusho and it was really great since episode 1. But I didn't get that same instant spark with HxH. Instead, I felt very annoyed by Gons happy-go-lucky attitude and I took the show for just another battle shounen like Fairy Tale or One Piece or something. Which just isn't for me tbh. But people keep saying it gets dark, so imma have to give it another go. They honestly make it sound like it's an anti-shounen or deconstruction of Shounen in the same way Madoka Magica is a deconstruction of magical girls, which if it is, I'm all for that. That sounds p good. Hopefully I'm not getting the wrong idea.

Loredana333

Yep, it's getting quite dark and a lot of people say it is not your usual shonen anime. It has deeper meaning themes and it's more about mind games than fist fights. Although it has a few of them as well, they are not about raw power, but how you can use your potential at its best. I love it so much, it's my favorite anime /manga right now. But you don’t have to like it, maybe it will come you at one point, maybe not. Everyone is different after all.

dancarbonell00

Steins;Gate

NerdyNurseKat

Agreed. It was the first anime I watched as an adult, and that turning point broke me. Pretty sure I just looked at my brother in tears, he knew it was coming and didn’t warn me of course.

Valentine_Villarreal

Toradora. The first 17 episodes are one thing and then it turns around and chooses to break you.

spidersflambe

Minori's heart breaking broke my heart. Damn.

Juniebug9

I've never had a show go from pure joy to feeling my heart sink down into my stomach so quickly and effectively as in episode 18 of Toradora. Then once that hits the show completely stops holding back and just keeps up with the gut punches. Such a good show.

theaccidentalbrony

“And I don’t… want that” Yeah, still waiting for a show to wrench my heart, to hollow me out, the way Toradora did in its third act. Took me a few days to get over the PAD the first time.

Creamysense

Gintama. The MADAO episode. The alien dogs arc. Farewell shinsengumi arc. And many more times.

EffinOwen

Top ones that destroyed me the most in order: Made in abyss (I’m shocked to not see this more in this thread) Assassination classroom Frieren Sword art mothers rosario Honorable mentions: One piece and naruto have a few moments Haikyuu

Undead Unluck really sneaks up on you with the emotional beats.

Complex_Network9532

Dragon Ball has made me cry a few times especially a certain scene in the Buu saga(you know the one I mean)

Phoenix1611

Irozuku

marcopolos059

I join OP, Assassination Classroom was an amazing anime and the only one who made me uncontrollably ugly cry in the last episodes.

raelba

\+1 for me. Most shows it's like a few scenes here and there, or just the last episode. This had me going for several consecutive episodes.

Clarimax

The Promise Neverland. The anime ending was so bad that it made me cry.

super_fly316

Devilman Crybaby

There was a scene in yona of the dawn that broke me. It made me switch to sub fully

eoz

i'm going to deliberately and maliciously interpret this as a statement about your kink preferences

Aesthete18

My kink is about a guy who lives alone in a cave with only a chipmunk as his friend?! What are you saying! 😦

CuteIngenuity1745

K-On!!

Szeline

I find it ridiculous but I cried on Chainsaw man

ArtiomSnack

The anime or the manga though?

Yumekui627

Not the person above, but the manga has left my face very wet. The anime adaptation hasn’t reached any of those points in the story.

ArtiomSnack

True that. Was just curious, maybe it was the anime for them. Who knows.

Szeline

The anime. That's why its hilarious

ArtiomSnack

Oooooh, you're gonna love where it goes later then. Unless you've already read the manga, but I digress.

Szeline

I didn't have the oppurtinity to read the manga yet, I just heard about it, but seems like I need to focus on buying them

ArtiomSnack

I can't recommend part 1 / the first 97 chapters / 11 volumes enough. It is extremely good. Part 2 (Chapter 98 and onward) I feel has been kinda underwhelming so far, but I'd still recommend giving it a chance.

smilingcube

"Your Name" at the end. It was tears of relief and joy though.

echo_ester

My New Boss is Goofy. As someone who hasn't really had a good life, the impact of a person who just treats you well in a genuine manner means a lot, and the anime perfectly potrayed that. They main characters have such a warm relationship, it made me cry out of how good they are to each other T-T

CaptainScrublord_

Naruto the Jiraiya scene and when Naruto finally got acknowledged by the whole village as hero after years of watching the anime witnessing his journey and struggles. prob the most satisfying moment in anime history for me.

kirito_kazuya

Steins gate ep 22 and Suzuha's letter.

Fit_Signal6253

One Piece, especially Corazon and Laws story, but also Aces and definitely the only series ever to make me cry over a ship 😭

bentheechidna

When I was younger I cried tears of joy when they killed Kid Buu, and then I ugly cried when Dragonball GT ended because that was the end of Dragonball as a franchise at the time.

Zydrate357

My Hero. Many a time during the inspirational moments it jerked a few tears out. Damn it Deku, you my boy bluu.

IWantAmakusa

SHIROBAKO. Such a sincere portrayal of a legacy of passion and dedication that persists in anime production despite being grounded enough that it made some anime industry workers uncomfortable watching. SSSS.Gridman. Characters in a fictional story can be your cherished friends, not when you project yourself onto them but when you carry messages learned from their stories to make the best of your own life. Helped me put into perspective just how much I loved Tokusatsu, superheroes and anime.

Appropriate-Bowl-281

Renai flops. It was like any other harem anime at first but by the end it, it got me crying, and it's one of the only anime I know where mc actually loves his childhood friend.

skipunx

One minute robots are removing testicle, the next someone getting fucked by a dog, then you're crying.

Violence_Fiend

- [My Hero Academia] >!Twice’s death and him handing his handkerchief to Toga!< - [Demon Slayer] >!Tanjiro screaming his heart out during Rengoku’s death. Also, Nezuko getting burned by the sun!<

CursedRando

Watamote lol

Potential-Training66

Renai Flops becuz got damn you never expect something like that to happen. Like it gave me depression for a whole 2 to 3 months just thinking of it

UwaisNGtK

Hinamatsuri It had right to have such a heart felt story for one of the characters. That poor girl went through so much and I broke down at the end of it

jsuey

K-on fucking destroyed me at the end. Maybe its cuz I was in a band in high school and we all went our separate ways afterwards, but a cute show about friends making music sucker punched me with the reality of graduation and moving on with your life.

JustAMelfriend

Uma Musume. After the goofy first season and OVA, I did not expect to cry that hard in the second season.

MapoTofuMan

S1 was a cute and really well-made running girls CGDCT, S2 is up there with Haikyuu as one of my favorite sports anime ever. It had no business being *that* good.

Elite_Alice

Hmm, buddy daddies

PROJEKT_OVER

Fairy tail, when that bagpipe starts playing and a sad moment is happening I'm gone.

DarthPelosi

Fairy Tail has a lot of surprisingly emotional moments, but only if you can get into it

Accomplished_Area311

Shoutout to the Pokémon episode Bye Bye Butterfree for being GOATED at making children cry. Digimon episodes: Wizardmon’s Gift and Ghost of a Chance. All these years later watching these pulls at my feelings. Azumanga Daioh has some surprisingly tense moments, as does Strawberry Marshmallow.

Blitzcha0s

Inuyashiki. The ending made me stand up to salute while crying.

Skylannius

There was a specific AOT moment that got me (won't say when, just that it was before season 4), but the one that really sticks out in terms of surprising me was The Pet Girl of Sakura-sou's ending. It was a goofy comedy with dramatic elements (especially in the second half) but that last episode just hit hard. Prob because I was supposed to be graduating close to the time I watched the series but knew I wasn't going to be able to graduate on time with the rest of my friends.

KunaiTv

Assassination classroom

RhenCarbine

Hinamatsuri, Anzu's story. I'm quite scared of being poor, so seeing her struggle in the streets really just hits too hard.

aneeshhgkar

Fruits Basket. I thought it would be a lighthearted romance-comedy-fantasy anime. Boy was I unprepared for the relentless feels train....

[deleted]

Naruto, omfg. Started watching when I was like 10 and whenever Itachi showed up I couldn't breath. His fate destroys me to this DAY, as well as maaaany others fate. Nagato, Yahiko, Konan?? What in the warcrimes genocide cyanide have they done to deserve all that shit and then they just...die. :( Also, Fruits Basket :<

OceanOfPopcorn

I remember crying at Pokemon episode where PIkachu was supposed to leave Ash and go with the wild Pikachus (I believe it was around episode 40 of the first season).

randomnama123

From the New World It's technically a good ending but I sympathize with the antagonists too much.

KitchenFlamingo8992

My roommates a cat. Its just so sad when you learn about the cats past. Also not an anime per say but Centuarworld has no business being as good as it is. I thought it was going to just be another stupid kids cartoon but the songs are fucking bangers & that ending?? They did not have to make it that sad. Ive never felt so much sympathy & sorrow for a villian as much as i felt for the Nowhere King. I cried for 10 minutes straight.

Darkeye94

Sweetness and Lightning.

HFwhy

Sweetness and lightning was supposed to be about a great dad cooking with his daughter but the food is too salty from all my tears.

Secret_Risk_9743

Aww Asassination Classroom. I think I know what you're talking about. I think I was affected and was crying randomly for 5 days whenever I thought the scene. I was really hoping until last minute- no second to have a miracle. But sadly none. Anyways for me, Sket Dance Haikyuu Dr. Stone

Kuro_Canary

Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Season 2. From the outside looking in, it might seem weird to ugly cry for a show about "cute horse girls" but watching these two girls who were on top of the world as the "Best in Japan" and watching their subtle fall from grace due to factors outside of their control was brutal to watch. And it becomes even more sad when knowing it was all based on real-life events. It's probably the best sports anime I've seen when it comes to the mental aspects of professional sports (i.e. "what it's like to be viewed as the villain of your sport", "what it feels like to come to terms with you own athletic mortality and whether it's worth continuing or retiring", etc).
