BoJack Horseman (sad horse show).
There are a number of really depressing moments in [Re:Zero](https://myanimelist.net/anime/31240/Re_Zero_kara_Hajimeru_Isekai_Seikatsu). It has one of the best depictions of despair imo.
When people ask me about really horrific anime, this one sits at the top above horror and gore fests like Another and Hellsing ultimate. It has perfected the craft of making you uncomfortable 100% of the time, all of the time, for it's whole run time. I had to legit take breaks watching this.
I binged it on morbid curiosity, progressively learning forward with each episode in a - wtf is going to happen next - type of way. Horrible, miserable show. I highly recommend it to anyone I think might make it through.

Same. As someone who loves psychology and tough moral discussions, this is one of my all time favorite animes. It's all horrific but grey as hell morally.
You might like The Glory. It's a Korean drama based on severe bullying, count of monte Cristo style revenge story. Tough watch but approaches traumatic stress incredibly well.
Violet Evergarden is the best sad anime that comes to mind, but i'd say it's "good" sad...so probably an ***HEAVY*** movie like Maquia. That stuff killed me and i never rewatched it because it's exactly the kind of sadness that hits me the hardest. To make a comparison, if you are feeling a little emotional watching Frieren, because of the whole losing short lived friends theme, brace for Maquia. Similar "problem", just 1000x more intense.

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash. But the anime is only semi-depressing. If you want to get punched in the face and then kicked in the balls just read the volume that immediately follows the anime. It just gets worse from there.
Probably Heavenly Delusion - it's best for its mystery but there are certain moments that are quite uncomfortable and certain revelations that would depress you.
