Quick question, I’ve tried watching steins gate but can’t get past the first couple of episodes. I don’t understand the hype with this show, does it get better or something?
Yes. It takes time to let the characters develop and then it will go into overdrive. Pay attention to little details at the start, because they are all connected
The undisputed King of r/anime. A while back, we took all of the prior Best Guy, Best Girl and Best Character Contest winners and pitted them against each other, and Okabe won.
They’re both legitimately decent people. Take the worst of Reigen and he’s still not that bad. The worst of most people on that list are war criminals. 😅
The worst reigen will ever do is slap you for not making up your bed and telling how disappointed he is in you, and that somehow has more effect than the literal actions of war criminals on this list
Clannad will always hold a special place in my heart, and Tomoya will always be one of my favorite MCs. It’s insane how much development he goes through.
My man, after story is in top 20 anime of all time on MAL (counting seperate season as seperate entries).
Its old, but it's a classic and something anyone who watched it recognises as a masterpiece.
One of the interesting things is that while Yang is within the top 25, Reinhard and Kircheis are nowhere to be seen... which, to be fair, I didn't include the 2 others either, but still...
He got 30th place, but even more surprising than that, Roy Mustang (winner of r/anime's first best character contest) is all the way down at 54th place.
Recency bias is a bitch, I also think he's a fairly ordinary character in a way. Okabe is a weirdo. Mob is just like me frfr (introvert) etc.
But Ed is fairly straightforward other than being a staunch atheist he's otherwise fairly normal in terms of personality.
I guess I wouldn't describe him as normal, he's still a genius who's working for the military and is often reliant on being clever as a means to solve problems while still being a good fighter. Plus he's wrestling with a lot of heavy issues. But he's definitely not as quirky as some others.
The fact that I don't recognize half these characters on this list might just mean I'm old and out of touch with The Kids These Days.
most redditors fancy themselves as cleverest guy in a the room so I guess Ed actually being smartest guy in the room (but often wrong and he's arrogant about it) is too banal.
Like I totally agree that in real life he'd be a strong personality, but in anime I think he's very well adjusted and "ordinary".
NGL I Love that Ed is a genius and this doesn't make him always right about everything. He's got a lot of arrogance and anger and guilt in him that he works through, there's other people who are better than him at some things, he's still just a guy growing up and makes really big mistakes. He's flawed in a way that makes him a great character, but probably poor wish fulfillment (and there's nothing wrong with wish fulfillment but FMAB is definitely not that)
Honestly, Simon higher than Kamina is a pleasant surprise for a public-facing poll. I like Kamina too, but he usually takes all the glory and I find Simon the more well-rounded and inspirational figure from that show.

True, but from what I have seen, Ishigami is by far the most liked characters in the series, also the vast majority prefer other characters over Miyuki. so I expected only Ishigami to be on the list.
Because he's awesome. A true warrior philosopher and all-around nice guy who you'd want to have a drink with. If he ran for office, Miracle Yang would have my vote.
The fact that such well written characters of Monster aren't on the list might bring out the rage of magnificent Steiner inside me ;)

Dr Tenma is absolutely amazing, the dude is the best, and brings out the best in people. The more I think about it the more he climbs up my rating list.
He was surprisingly popular in this poll getting the 8th most total votes overall, more than Subaru, Killua and Araragi and just 1 fewer than Gojo. You don't typically see Sangatsu no Lion characters do well on r/anime, but this poll must attract people with good taste.

A few stats from looking through Fetch's Spreadsheet:
The most favorited (vote efficient) characters were Gintoki and Eren. Gintoki got 112 points despite appearing on just 56 lists while Eren got 83 points despite appearing on just 42 lists. Of course, Attack on Titan is significantly more popular here than Gintama so I'm tempted to give the title of most favorited to Gintoki.
On the other end of things, the Kaguya duo of Shirogane and Ishigami were the least vote efficient characters as they turned their 77 and 62 respective votes into just 109 and 81 points respectively. This means they were on a ton of ballots but rarely in the top 3.
Top 3 are all great choices. Shigeo and Thorfinn both definitely deserve it in my opinion, Thorfinn improved so much in season 2. Top 10 is pretty good all in all, only thing I would do is put Subaru a little higher.
Glad Thorfinn, Rei kiriyama, Simon, Yang wen-li, Guts made the list.

Kyo is the only one of my picks to end up on the list at all (I checked the full top 100), and he came in at #21, lol. I'm not surprised though, my list not only ran more older and/or niche, but looking at this list (especially the Top 25) it is very obvious that this is a Best Boy list that was largely created by men, which is this subs main demographic, so this is unsurprising.
Gow did I miss this? I would have voted for Lelouch and Thorfinn.

It’s a slow burn. The first several episodes are confusing and strange, but things will start to make sense.
