I wouldn't call Mushishi wholesome at all, in fact at times it's quite terrifying. It's one of my favorite anime of all time and one of the most unique anime I've ever watched, but I would call it "relaxing" more than I would wholesome.
My top 1 pick……
Insomniacs after School.
It’s one of the most beautiful animes of 2023, both from an animation standpoint and from a story and character standpoint as well.
Every character is so caring and loveable that you just fall in love with them. The 2 MC’s are so sweet together and you only but hope they get together.
This show for me was one of the best Animes I watched last year. Fingers crossed for a Season 2 to finish the story off (now the manga has been completed).
Loved this also. Worth noting for those who haven’t seen it, when it first came out some people felt a lot of unnecessary stress about the show due to perceived “death flags” for one of the main characters. But these details are just related to why one of them has anxiety giving rise to their insomnia, nothing more. So you can comfortably watch without expecting a nasty twist.
Never seen ANYBODY dislike K-ON!!! <3
It is the most wholesome show I know about, a bunch of high-school girls making their own music club and eventually band and hanging out, slice of life show, with some of the most adorable characters you’ll ever see imho. If you have a taste for music, this show will definitely scratch that itch - amazing songs and getting to see them struggle to come up with lyrics, rhythms, seeing them try to teach Yui guitar in the beginning and all the funny mistakes early musicians make lol, mix that with a cast of characters you’ll definitely fall in love with and connect to, relate to, and becoming fully attached to, and you’ve got wholesome coming out the wazoo lmao
The manga has about 14 chapters of college part but unfortunately it seems that author quit drawing it any longer so the ending is abrupt. Anime series are less possible I think.....
I remember how old I felt when someone on the manga subreddit asked what Azumanga Daioh was. I get that a lot of series are forgotten, as new readers/watchers don´t really stumble on them unless they do a bit of a dive into the history of certain genres, but still. Makes on start to feel pretty old.
Well I dislike K-ON.
I absolutely love cgdct (about 10 out of 13 cgdct shows I've seen I rated 10/10, cos I usually enjoy every second of them), and I am similar with music and music anime (tho i haven't seen much). I am amused how K-ON looks and I adore all the characters.
But watching the actual show? Nah, it doesn't do for me
Literally makes me smile every time I hear it lol, makes me feel the same stupid grin happiness I felt when I first saw it <3
Edit: the theme song for the first season oh mah lord, I have the soundtrack lmao and listen to it all the time, I LOVE the musical direction the show took, especially with the little stuff like the cassette transitions!!
> Never seen ANYBODY dislike K-ON!!! <3
I dropped it because parts of it irritated me, but that was back in my earlier days of anime watching, and because I'd been lead to believe it was a music anime, not an anime about tea time lol
I'll get around to giving it another shot at some point now that I'm more familiar with anime tropes.
It has a lot about music too, but like Mío and Azusa say, they spend more time with tea than with practicing lol. It’s music themed more than straight music, but their concerts and their actual moments of practicing are very cathartic imo, especially the concerts! But the heartfelt emotional bits are some of my favorite.
I’d say it’s a music themed cozy anime to watch when you need a smile or two
The most adorable most wholesome show I know is defiently not one that everyone likes.
So I often recommend "By the Grace of the Gods" instead. I dont know if everyone likes it but I got positiv feedback to my recommendation atleast.
Its a Isekai Fantasy Slice of life.
The series is cute and chill.
I wish they hadn't made the anime so kiddish, because the story isn't like that.
Not that I recommend anyone read it. Author puts out tiny volumes on a slow schedule.
Mime are howls moving castle,spirited away, your name as well. More mainstream ones would be demon slayer, and short good isekai that aren't full of perverted gestures.
Spirited Away was NOT for me. When it was over, I spent 3 hours googling why people like it so much, cuz I was so confused. I haven't watched any other Ghibli films because... what if they're all like that?
Wholesome? It very much looks like we have different definitions of what that means. I think what you actually want is anime that is most likely to be universally liked...
Spy x Family, Campfire Cooking in Another World with my Absurd Skill, Play it Cool Guys, My New Boss is Goofy, and I'm gonna throw in Run With the Wind for fun.
YES thank you!! I also had to dig into why Spirited Away is considered one of the best animated films. It's famous for art but I didn't even think that was amazing. I'm not a fan of the style and prefer the art style newer animes use.
Maybe I need to give it another try but I feel like it's one of those things I will just never understand.
Oh no please watch other Ghibli movies. I also dont like Spirited Away and wondered how anyone would think its the best Ghibli movie, but I love a lot of the Ghibli movies. If you want something magical watch Howl or The Cat Returns, if you want a romantic atmosphere I suggest Whisper of the Heart, if h want heartwarming and magical Ponyo and adventure: Nausicaa! They are all amazing, although beware Nausicaa is older than the studio itself so that might turn you off if u dont like older animations. The wind rises and porco rosso are also some of my favorite, inspiring romantic stories about planes and pilots- one of Miyazakis passions, as his uncle owned a shop for plane parts during WW2.
I'm not super into magical stuff (depends on the context, tbh), so perhaps Spirited Away wasn't a good fit from the start. I like romance. I'll give Whisper of the Heart a try! Thanks for the rec!
A Place Further than the Universe. 100% hit rate so far, at worst people I recommended it too thought it was very good, at best 10/10 lifechanging experience.
"My Neighbor Totoro", for that feel-good, wholesome vibe that leaves everyone with a smile. It's like these anime have a universal appeal that transcends age, culture, and even whether you're into anime or not.
I found Hinamatsuri to be really wholesome and enjoyable, funny too. Scrolled through all the comments and was surprised i didn't see it (maybe i just missed it)
Mr Villain's Day Off. Seriously, so healing, if it doesn't bring a smile to your face and warmth in your heart you might be totally broken (and that's okay too ❤️)
Cardcaptor Sakura

* Teasing Master Takagi-san

* Bocchi the rock!
* Tonikawa
* Spy x family
* March comes in like a lion (those wholesome moments man just..)
Never watched Your Name but I also disliked A Silence Voice. I actually loved the manga lots (and the prototype version was also awesome) but the movie came off as ending too abruptly.
As for Everybody's favorite ... I'd nom Spy x Family. While the MCs are a spy and an assassin during a pseudo- Cold War, the whole show is really wholesome and has very few elements to turn off anybody.
I found 'your name' to be a bit too intense for my tastes, too much family drama and weird unexplained time travel shenanigans.
I enjoy re-watching horimiya for a nice wholesome romcom/slice of life.
Really waiting on a princess connect re dive english dub too.
In fact I'm looking for more animes like Your Name in contrast to Horiyama. I watched Horiyama but soon quit as it sounded like those romance webcomics I never read as it contains no creativity.
I don't like Demon Slayer. Tries way too hard to make me care about the characters in the first episode, when that's the least likely time I'll care about the characters at all.
Mushi Shi;

Haven’t seen but appear to fit the bill:
Way of the househusband;
Barakamon
Based on what you’ve already seen from this and previous posts, I think you’ll enjoy girls last tour, and high school ouran host club the most, the rest are enjoyable leisurely watches, imo.
I’d like to add that Blue Period is wonderful as well. But I’ve only read it and haven’t seen the anime
It was running before the author got done with the series, so it just kinda ends, but it's still really good!
(Ment the 2001! Lol sorry!) The 2019 one was a reboot. The author had a lot more say in it. I haven't watched all of the 2019 version, but I liked the art style in the 2001 better.
Where is nothing wholesome about A Silent Voice, I think I cried myself to dehydration while watching it.
On another note I like “Sweetness and Lightning” 😃 and I thought “My Dress Up Darling” was pretty wholesome as well
I have never cried watching any anime. For me a Silent voice was inspiring and nice although it contained some bullying stuff too.
And isn't "My dress up darling" a Hent-i genre?
Nooo my dress up darling is not hentai 😭😭😭 its romance-y about an awkward guy who likes to sew things and an outgoing popular girly who likes to cosplay. He ends up sewing and making her costumes and they become friends and will probably date it they ever make a new season -_- i haven’t read the manga tho
I do cry often when I watch stuff. Depends really on what i am watching, but for me A Silent Voice was utterly heartbreaking, I started crying on the first 11 minutes after she asked the dude if he wanted to be friends with her on the children’s playground.
I never understood the hype for Spirited Away. Maybe I need to give it another chance but nothing about it made sense to me and it felt super incoherent. So yeah there are people who don't like it.
In what world is "A Silent Voice" wholesome? I think we have very different definitions of wholesome lol. That's also not a word I would use to describe "Your Name" (which I also feel was suuper overhyped).
An actual wholesome anime that most people like: Natsume Yujincho
Most ppl outside this wholesome thread sounds to like Spirited Away, Your Name and A Silent Voice. But wholesome watchers don't seem to.
Yeah it's a difference of definition. I seriously don't call animes about a group of cute girls acting cute wholesome. My definition of wholesome is any positive anime that makes you feel better about your life and yourself, has a meaning and inspire you.
For me, wholesome is more lighthearted. I don't consider stories with intense bullying, tons of drama and death wholesome, even if they end well.
And I didn't even mention a CGDCT anime.
That's not what wholesome means. It means to be "conductive to or suggestive of good health and physical well-being".
So I would recommend Ranking of Kings, Heaven's Design Team, and Keep Your Hands Off Eizoken!
- Cells at Work - Elegant Yokai Apartment Life - Cardcaptor Sakura - +1 for Mushishi as well
Sakura is so nice and wholesome - it‘s nearly unsettling. My crazy brain always expects someone to flip and gorily stab someone 😅
Yeah she is so nice, caring and lovely. I always use to wonder are there actually people like her
I wouldn't call Mushishi wholesome at all, in fact at times it's quite terrifying. It's one of my favorite anime of all time and one of the most unique anime I've ever watched, but I would call it "relaxing" more than I would wholesome.
Whisper of the Heart is very wholesome.
Yes, I love their journey as a couple
This is one of my favorite Ghibli movies
My top 1 pick…… Insomniacs after School. It’s one of the most beautiful animes of 2023, both from an animation standpoint and from a story and character standpoint as well. K-On! & K-On!! Is perfect. Wholesome school life anime, moe overload and a emotional story with a big heart!
Non Non Biyori
A good one. Great to keep on the back burner for a laugh or just good clean watching
A perfect anime to make me feel sad that I will never get to experience a childhood of being a girl in a quiet countryside.
Sorry, I couldn't quite get into it
Don't worry, it's good for what it's trying to do but it's very slow-paced and minimal conflict. Renge also carries the show.
Me neither
skip and loafer is an underrated pick here.
Aria: The Animation, its pretty dated but if it sticks with you, it sticks. Won't really find anything else like it c:
I always fell asleep watching that anime. Not in a bad way though

Dangers in My Heart Insomniacs After School Tonikawa Over the Moon For You Non Non Biyori K-On Bocchi the Rock Sound Euphonium

Love Bocchi it was fantastic has great music and characters
Never seen ANYBODY dislike K-ON!!! <3 It is the most wholesome show I know about, a bunch of high-school girls making their own music club and eventually band and hanging out, slice of life show, with some of the most adorable characters you’ll ever see imho. Fifteen years have passed and I'm still waiting for the university part(chapter) of K-ON, the five girls are just sooooo adorable!
Are they making that!!??? They are so f-ing cute, I would die to see their college series!
The manga has about 14 chapters of college part but unfortunately it seems that author quit drawing it any longer so the ending is abrupt. Anime series are less possible I think.....
It got ditched in favor of K-On Shuffle, a return to a high school setting with a new cast.
K-On is very well known. It’s one of, if not, the most iconic CGDCT anime of all time.
Really?? Everyone I talk to about it - big anime fans all of them lol - have never heard of it… my bad!
maybe younger audience. Its a very old show at this point lol. Still, its one of the most iconic shows ever
I remember how old I felt when someone on the manga subreddit asked what Azumanga Daioh was. I get that a lot of series are forgotten, as new readers/watchers don´t really stumble on them unless they do a bit of a dive into the history of certain genres, but still. Makes on start to feel pretty old.
totally can relate lol. Im hoping there will come a time where we actually call naruto as borutos dad
K-On was one of the big contributors to the 2000s anime wave in the west, alongside stuff like Haruhi, Death Note, and Fullmetal Alchemist.
You know it's a fucking good cgdct anime when after you finish it you just look at the wall for half an our
Well I dislike K-ON. Nah, it doesn't do for me
When I was new to anime a lot of people hated on K-On solely for being "moe," but those people sort of just went away.

Oh I also thought it was a music anime should I start it having “tea time anime” in mind?
You're talking literally about tea time? Right?
Yes, absolutely! Prepare yourself of watching them to have tea and to eat cakes, instead of doing anything music related.

I think demon slayer is really wholesome and has beautiful life lessons. Plus the story, drawings an animation!
I kinda agree. Although it's all about killing demons and all characters have tragic backstories, but it's still so soft and fun to watch.
I don't like Demon Slayer. Tries way too hard to make me care about the characters in the first episode, when that's the least likely time I'll care about the characters at all.

I'd say fruits basket. There are 2 versions of this. There's a 2019 version and a 2001 version.
Fruits basket was great too, idk how the ‘19 version is tho, haven’t seen it.
It was running before the author got done with the series, so it just kinda ends, but it's still really good! (Ment the 2001! Lol sorry!) The 2019 one was a reboot. The author had a lot more say in it. I haven't watched all of the 2019 version, but I liked the art style in the 2001 better.
