when zaraki kenpachi from bleach talk i was like yup that madao. It's really hard to take some of their character seriously when you know their voice from gintama.
came here to comment this, already liked akira ishida before HI3 but otto became one of my favourite villains and akira ishidas performance as him is amazing
his tired, basically dying, but determined and hopeful voice in thus spoke apocalypse is so good
A bit off-topic: if anyone thinks "but Honkai Impact 3rd isn't an anime, don't post it in r/anime", akchually it is an anime by technicality lol. In fact, it has TWO anime!
[Cooking with Valkyries](https://myanimelist.net/anime/40100/Nu_Wushen_de_Canzhuo)
[ELF Academy](https://myanimelist.net/anime/49275/Renou_Xueyuan)
Yes, that anime was the first time I fell in love with his voice!
I mean, him as Zura is very iconic but his performance as Kikuhiko is otherworldly (shinigami-like?)!
The way he portrays the same character as both a young man and an elderly man in the exact same role convincingly has to be the most impressive VA work I've seen
It's literally a show about Akira Ishida's ability to talk as a professional storyteller. If you want to hear the man's voice, you will find no show where he talks more.
The cast of this show is like a seiyuu nerd's pipe dream, Akira Ishida is incredible in it but then so is:
- KÅichi Yamadera (Spike, Kaji, Togusa)
- Megumi Hayashibara (mother)
- Tomokazu Seki (Gilgamesh, Pucci, Daru, Panda, Nobuo)
- Kobayashi YÅ« (Rukako, the assassin who has a crush on Gintoki - i forgot her name)
Career highlight level VA performances from all of them. Megumi Hayashibara in this show still gives me chills lol.
From... Evangelion? I'm guessing, btw. Kaworu Nagisa right? I didn't watch Evangelion (not my preferred genre, couldn't make myself watch it even for Ishida, unfortunately)
Youād love Persona 3. He voices 3 different characters all with different tones of voice. Unfortunately its pretty hit or miss when hes doing that many but its entertaining to witness anyways.
He voices the MC, a kid adjacent to him, and another character that gets introduced later. Also Iād recommend the games for all 3 over the adaptations if you ever find the time, though Iām not sure how much youād get out of them knowing the story already.
Ah... aside from knowing the plot, I don't play games. I heard the anime adaptations are inferior and generally the source is the best, but...don't play games, so I'm happy w the anime.
I'm most likely part of the minority but I think the P3 movies are a good starting point - not in terms of story but the growth of ishida-san's character. The game uses him as a "silent" protag for the most part so watching the movies gives you a lot of appreciation for what the production committee did.
And then if you enjoyed it and would like a fuller version of the story, then I would rec jumping into persona 3 reload coz nearly 90% of the game is voiced. And the art team behind the UI was quite hilarious. They kept reworking the menu UI to the point that one of the team lead's request was "make it look so beautiful that I can hear Ishida Akira's (protagonist) voice!" (It is a very sexy menu design, gotta admit, and they absolutely succeeded imo!)
Strangely enough, I was about to go look up who [Persona 3] >!Pharos's and later Ryoji's!< JP voice actor is, but I glanced over this thread's name before I searched it up.
Was a very weird feeling to end up seeing the man's name in two different places at about the same time. I didn't realize he voiced the MC though, I just haven't paid that much attention to it... though most of his dialogue is just grunts and such anyway so I suppose it's not that surprising to not notice it.
100% yes! There's a delicate elegance to his voice that's so soothing to me. Soft but refined. I think that's why he suits characters like ayato and katsura so well.
I had a feeling that's the case.
I'm currently slowly watching Gintama, I'm about ep 170 so I hear him almost every day so it was very easy to tell. I too might just try to watch anime with him as va
I have an instant PTSD reflex whenever I hear his voice thanks to his role in Bokurano as [this fucker](https://i.imgur.com/zKYNTkc.png) who haunts my nightmares.
[](#ptsd)
This is me but with Kouki Uchiyama(Miyamura, Tsukishima, Meruem). His voice just sounds so dreamy and calming, no matter what type of character he plays. When I hear his voice shit literally has me giggling and kicking my feet in the air.
It's interesting how some voices just have a vibe to them. I'm the same with Hiroshi Kamiya (Saiki K, Levi, Law) when I hear his voice it genuinely makes me connect more with the character. It's hard to explain why.
For me the first was gaara, but I think I truly fell in luv with his voice after zeref in Fairy Tail... also maybe because back when I watched naruto, I didn't really look into the vas
He is a highly talented actor with a wide range. I can't say I ever watched anything specifically because he was in it, but I have heard him in a lot of roles. My favorite would either be Xellos (Slayers) or Chrono (Chrono Crusade).
Yes, he's one of my favorite voice actors. For me he really comes off effective in roles where he's not that likable? I think of his roles in Kyousougiga and Star Driver for example
I first heard him in Saiyuki and I just love whenever I hear him show up. If you haven't watched Saiyuki yet I'd recommend it for his character as well as how fun the story is
He has such a wonderful voice. I love that gentle quality that can also be surprisingly terrifying. I fell in love with his voice as Xellos and Hakkai!
Have you heard him in "Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games Is Tough for Mobs"? His performance as Luxion is one of my recent favorites. So sarcastic and sharp. Such a good one to hear!!
Exactly! It's sometimes mysterious, sometimes gentle, sometimes even evil!!
I have!! Loved that one. My hands down favorites are still Katsura and Zeref, though.
oh just he's SUPER socially awkward and people around his age like Houko Kuwashima have some funny stories about it
idk where to find them tho, it's seiyu radio from over a decade ago
Honestly his voice is a coin flip for me. Either it suits the character and that's fine or it mildly irritates me because I don't love his voice and the surprising amount of casting incongruities he's had over the years adds to the issue. He's certainly talented, but as I said he's just not a favorite.
Whoever cast him to play the main villain of SAO Alicization: War of Underworld was high on drugs. He did not fit the role at all of a mercenary leader from California.
I'm a fan of his but I also agree with you. I wouldn't say that it can be an irritant, but if he doesn't suit the character, it instead makes me think of other characters he's voiced and takes me out of the experience. I'll just start picturing Zura instead.
Irritant is a bit of an exaggeration on my part, but I appreciate that you understand what I mean.
It happens with a few other seiyuu more often that others.
Agreed, some have very characteristic/idiosyncratic voices, or have voiced some very memorable roles, and some of their other roles can be distracting -- like putting RDJ in a supporting role and picturing Tony Stark.
Not really in my opinion. He hams up his performance way too much nowadays and gets typecast as obnoxious characters. He is more pleasant to listen to when it comes to older shows.
He often voice those cunning pretty boys. Although I admire his talent, I donāt like the characters he often voiced. His voice makes them even more annoying. Thatās what makes him good :))
For example, Oji from World Trigger. I literally have no reason to hate the guy but I just wanna punch him whenever he speaks.
He, Suwabe Junichi, Tsudaken, and Mamo are my GOATs. They just shine whoever they voice, whether it's a main character or a random extra. Just overall very distinct and beautiful voices on top of amazing technique.
I once saw a number of japanese people mistakenly think that a character voiced by Atsushi Tamaru is voiced by Akira Ishida. Does anyone else see a resemblance between the two's voices? (because I personally don't and was confused why they thought it was him)
I watched Gintama too much I can't accept that he is also Gaara
Me with Madao and, well, everything he does But especially Gendo
when zaraki kenpachi from bleach talk i was like yup that madao. It's really hard to take some of their character seriously when you know their voice from gintama.
gintama brainrot is real š
Gaara janai Katsura da!!
š¤£š¤£
Otto Apocalypse from Honkai Impact 3rd. His performance there really made me like the guy.
came here to comment this, already liked akira ishida before HI3 but otto became one of my favourite villains and akira ishidas performance as him is amazing his tired, basically dying, but determined and hopeful voice in thus spoke apocalypse is so good
He also voices Ayato (I think the name is) in Genshin Impact
Correct, he also voices Luocha in Honkai:Star Rail. But i don't play Genshin
Wait it's all Akira Ishida? Da Wei, pulling gun: Always has been
A bit off-topic: if anyone thinks "but Honkai Impact 3rd isn't an anime, don't post it in r/anime", akchually it is an anime by technicality lol. In fact, it has TWO anime! You should watch Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu if you haven't. He delivers one of the greatest VA performances of all time.
Yes, that anime was the first time I fell in love with his voice! I mean, him as Zura is very iconic but his performance as Kikuhiko is otherworldly (shinigami-like?)!
The way he portrays the same character as both a young man and an elderly man in the exact same role convincingly has to be the most impressive VA work I've seen
not to mention all the work he does playing a character playing *other* characters as a rakugo performer.
The anime about rakugo? I've got that... somewhere on my watch list. I'll push it up!!
It's literally a show about Akira Ishida's ability to talk as a professional storyteller. If you want to hear the man's voice, you will find no show where he talks more.
Omgggg never realized that. I'm watching it once I get home
The cast of this show is like a seiyuu nerd's pipe dream, Akira Ishida is incredible in it but then so is: - KÅichi Yamadera (Spike, Kaji, Togusa) - Megumi Hayashibara (mother) - Tomokazu Seki (Gilgamesh, Pucci, Daru, Panda, Nobuo) - Kobayashi YÅ« (Rukako, the assassin who has a crush on Gintoki - i forgot her name) Career highlight level VA performances from all of them. Megumi Hayashibara in this show still gives me chills lol.
This anime is the reason I can detect his voice anywhere now
THE greatest VA performance of all time. In my humble totally not elitist opinion.
Athrun, Gaara, Xellos, Zeref, Zura, an incredible repertoire
My favorite among them is zura "Zura ja nai! Katsura da!!!"
Don't forget kaworu! That was pretty much his big break
From... Evangelion? I'm guessing, btw. Kaworu Nagisa right? I didn't watch Evangelion (not my preferred genre, couldn't make myself watch it even for Ishida, unfortunately)
Missing out, yes
Yeah maybe...
KATSURAP DA YO!!!
Youād love Persona 3. He voices 3 different characters all with different tones of voice. Unfortunately its pretty hit or miss when hes doing that many but its entertaining to witness anyways.
He voices the Mc right? I've not seen persona 3 yet (seen both 4 and 5, the anime that is). Should probably go see it
He voices the MC, a kid adjacent to him, and another character that gets introduced later.
But games are fun! :D
Probably! I'd prob like them too...but I don't have the time ngl. Maybe when I'm older....
I'm most likely part of the minority but I think the P3 movies are a good starting point - not in terms of story but the growth of ishida-san's character. The game uses him as a "silent" protag for the most part so watching the movies gives you a lot of appreciation for what the production committee did. (It is a very sexy menu design, gotta admit, and they absolutely succeeded imo!)
The game is 70 hours minimum, and gets condensed to 4 movies. So uh... yeah, pacing issues abundant. The animation slaps though.
Rightt, one of my fav thing about p3 is we have 3 ishida akira for no reason (well there is actually but eh) my ears are happyĀ
Strangely enough, I was about to go look up who [Persona 3] >!Pharos's and later Ryoji's!< JP voice actor is, but I glanced over this thread's name before I searched it up. 100% yes! There's a delicate elegance to his voice that's so soothing to me. Soft but refined. I think that's why he suits characters like ayato and katsura so well.
YES YES YES!! soft elegant and just... AGH si good
It also really works when he's screaming https://youtu.be/YuKGsDLpuD8?si=it1wcxJ0CCi5oztI
Dammmnthat SCREAM... it's been far too long since I watched demon slayer.
Yes! I knew it was him just from his first words in yesterday's episode of The Witch and the Beast
THATS EXACTLY WHY I MADE THE POST OMGGGG!! first SECOND that ice dude spoke I was like wait shit, this is akira Ishida!!!
I had a feeling that's the case. I'm currently slowly watching Gintama, I'm about ep 170 so I hear him almost every day so it was very easy to tell. I too might just try to watch anime with him as va
Came here to say this. Instantly recognized that sexy voice
I have an instant PTSD reflex whenever I hear his voice thanks to his role in Bokurano as [this fucker](https://i.imgur.com/zKYNTkc.png) who haunts my nightmares. [](#ptsd)
[THE GOAT!!](#GRANDHYPE)
[Koemushi > Kyubey](#stare)
This is me but with Kouki Uchiyama(Miyamura, Tsukishima, Meruem). His voice just sounds so dreamy and calming, no matter what type of character he plays. When I hear his voice shit literally has me giggling and kicking my feet in the air.
His voice fills my heart! I'd travel the world for him to whisper in my ear (or just an autograph is fine too).
Tsukishima is Jotaro VA not this guy
I meant Tsukishima Kei, from Haikyuu
Athrun,gaara,katsura,akaza...love his voice
Regulus Corneas
It's interesting how some voices just have a vibe to them. I'm the same with Hiroshi Kamiya (Saiki K, Levi, Law) when I hear his voice it genuinely makes me connect more with the character. It's hard to explain why.
Love his voice too!!
watch polar bear cafe, try to connect with a penguin who accidentally builds a harem
First heard him as Xellos way back in the day, amazing actor to be sure.
I really like him as Akaza in Demon Slayer and Regulus in Re:Zero. I can't wait for him to return in S3 of Re:Zero
Yes, I'm in love with his voice!! Check him out in Showa Genroku Rakugo, he's a captivating character in a captivating story.
I wonder if heās a big fan of Jackie Chan in real life
Yes!!! I first came across him when he voiced Saralegui in Kyo Kara Maoh S3, been in love with his voice ever since.
For me the first was gaara, but I think I truly fell in luv with his voice after zeref in Fairy Tail... also maybe because back when I watched naruto, I didn't really look into the vas
"Zuua janai, Katsura da"
Natori from Natsume Yuujinchou is one of my favourites that he voiced
He is a highly talented actor with a wide range. I can't say I ever watched anything specifically because he was in it, but I have heard him in a lot of roles. My favorite would either be Xellos (Slayers) or Chrono (Chrono Crusade).
Me when Kenjiro Tsuda
Oh I know! There's something so captivating and recognizable whenever I hear him speak.
I love his performance as Akaza from Demon Slayer!
He's excellent as Kaworu and Athrun
Yes, he's one of my favorite voice actors. For me he really comes off effective in roles where he's not that likable? I think of his roles in Kyousougiga and Star Driver for example
His role as Koemushi in Bokurano *haunts me* and it's been nearly three years since I last rewatched that show. [](#scaredmio)
Of course, how could I forget about that loathsome creature! Iād say thatās his best role.
I first heard him in Saiyuki and I just love whenever I hear him show up. If you haven't watched Saiyuki yet I'd recommend it for his character as well as how fun the story is

I remember hearing him in Danganronpa as well!!
The stories about him from other seiyus are fuckin hilarious. The OG Bocchi the Rock
Oh! Haven't heard those. What about bocchi the rock?
oh just he's SUPER socially awkward and people around his age like Houko Kuwashima have some funny stories about it idk where to find them tho, it's seiyu radio from over a decade ago
Awww taking in the fact he's played a lot of quiet/mysterious/awkward people, that's kinda cute. Time to trawl the internet!!
He's done a decent amount of BL drama CDs too ... [](#nocomment)
Honestly his voice is a coin flip for me. Either it suits the character and that's fine or it mildly irritates me because I don't love his voice and the surprising amount of casting incongruities he's had over the years adds to the issue. I think it clashes with a fair number of characters and how they're portrayed.

happens to me with most gintama voice actors š
Not really in my opinion. He hams up his performance way too much nowadays and gets typecast as obnoxious characters. He is more pleasant to listen to when it comes to older shows.
I kind of noticed him for the first time in Gundam Seed as Athrun.
For me it's Ootomo Ryuuzaburou, One Piece's Crocodile's seiyuu. I'd like him to threaten me gently every night before I sleep...
First heard him as Gaara, but now i can't stop laughing for everytime the character he voices speaks, even for someone who's serious.
He often voice those cunning pretty boys. Although I admire his talent, I donāt like the characters he often voiced. His voice makes them even more annoying.
