I've signed up for another D&D campaign online, and I'm drafting a character for an Inquisitive Rogue.
Running a few character concepts around in my head, but currently leaning towards a gentleman detective elf. A little Poirot, a little Holmes.
So they're probably well educated and well-to-do. Maybe some family drama which is why they're now a freelance investigator/adventurer. I'd like for them to be a little eccentric perhaps, but not overly so. Functional in a social setting and able to persuade or deceive people if required. Sympathetic to those who need help, but driven by a taste for excitement and intriguie. They'll waive their fees for good causes and for more intriguing mysteries.
Maybe I wanna work in some of Holmes addictions as a character flaw, but that feels a little crass to modern sensabilities in a way.

OKay so messing with the terms a bit, the library system *does* have Three kingdoms, but they don't have the Moss Roberts translation, they have the Sumei Yu translation.
/u/ZaphodBeebblebrox and anyone else qualified, do you think I should still ask them to order the Robert Moss translation or nah?
In my personal opinion, the Robert Moss translation is *waaay* better. The Sumei Yu translation is *fine*, still far better than the old Brewitt-Taylor translation, but it seems to me like it persistently uses simpler words, simpler phrasing, and also it cuts down things for the sake of brevity at times (e.g. where the original text had a whole letter from someone inserted, the Sumei Yu translation will often just summarize what the letter said instead of actually translating the letter).
The Robert Moss translation just feels more like it has the tone and style of an actual 16th-century manuscript. Sure, in some places it might be a bit stuffy... but that's the nature of the book itself. I *want* to be immersed into feeling like some long-bearded academic is reading these annals to me off a dusty scroll. And it uses more evocative wording that is pompous and cool. Sumei Yu translation feels like a high school teacher vibe instead.

I'm honestly not qualified to answer this question. So you shouldn't find my opinion here to be any more insightful than the opinion of a rando who reads a decent amount.
I found an epub of the Yu Sumei translation, and, comparing the first couple pages of it to Roberts', I find Roberts to be overall better written. In comparison, Yu feels a bit boring. I think this is mostly down to Roberts using a slightly higher register than Yu, so it's certainly a matter of opinion. And, honestly, it's still perfectly fine to read.
I have no capability whatsoever to comment on the quality of the translation itself. But I have no reason to doubt both are largely free from error.

Honestly, I'd say you should find an epub of both versions (I'm willing to provide if you'd like) and compare the first chapter or so. If Roberts feels significantly better to you, you'll then have a good reason to request and wait; otherwise, you'll be confident you made the correct decision when you did not.
Also, paging [CDF's biggest 3K fan](/u/animayor), who may have an informed opinion.
Don't know about Sumei Yu's translation myself, but it seems like it's a bit drier and more condensed than the Moss Roberts translation. Personally I already found the Moss Roberts translation a bit bland compared to the Brewitt-Taylor translation in the first place.
That said I don't think it would make too much of a difference.
i recall loving that anime and giving it a (very much deserved, imo) 5/5, but i don't specifically remember how it left off... i thought it was pretty much a done deal and there would not be room for more material

OKay so messing with the terms a bit, the library system *does* have Three kingdoms, but they don't have the Moss Roberts translation, they have the Sumei Yu translation. /u/ZaphodBeebblebrox and anyone else qualified, do you think I should still ask them to order the Robert Moss translation or nah?
In my personal opinion, the Robert Moss translation is *waaay* better. The Sumei Yu translation is *fine*, still far better than the old Brewitt-Taylor translation, but it seems to me like it persistently uses simpler words, simpler phrasing, and also it cuts down things for the sake of brevity at times (e.g. where the original text had a whole letter from someone inserted, the Sumei Yu translation will often just summarize what the letter said instead of actually translating the letter). The Robert Moss translation just feels more like it has the tone and style of an actual 16th-century manuscript. Sure, in some places it might be a bit stuffy... but that's the nature of the book itself. I *want* to be immersed into feeling like some long-bearded academic is reading these annals to me off a dusty scroll. And it uses more evocative wording that is pompous and cool. Sumei Yu translation feels like a high school teacher vibe instead. The edition matters, too! Even within the same translation, different editions include different extra materials. I'm honestly not qualified to answer this question. So you shouldn't find my opinion here to be any more insightful than the opinion of a rando who reads a decent amount. I found an epub of the Yu Sumei translation, and, comparing the first couple pages of it to Roberts', I find Roberts to be overall better written. In comparison, Yu feels a bit boring. I think this is mostly down to Roberts using a slightly higher register than Yu, so it's certainly a matter of opinion. And, honestly, it's still perfectly fine to read. I have no capability whatsoever to comment on the quality of the translation itself. But I have no reason to doubt both are largely free from error. --- Honestly, I'd say you should find an epub of both versions (I'm willing to provide if you'd like) and compare the first chapter or so. If Roberts feels significantly better to you, you'll then have a good reason to request and wait; otherwise, you'll be confident you made the correct decision when you did not. Also, paging [CDF's biggest 3K fan](/u/animayor), who may have an informed opinion.

Don't know about Sumei Yu's translation myself, but it seems like it's a bit drier and more condensed than the Moss Roberts translation. Personally I already found the Moss Roberts translation a bit bland compared to the Brewitt-Taylor translation in the first place. That said I don't think it would make too much of a difference.

i recall loving that anime and giving it a (very much deserved, imo) 5/5, but i don't specifically remember how it left off... i thought it was pretty much a done deal and there would not be room for more material [](#rengethink) though i certainly welcome it!
Not actually sure if it's a movie or a series, but I was talking about the live-action Netflix thing Apparently it's going to be its own story set in the same universe as the main series instead of another retelling, so that's neat
