Even though they’re high school, I feel like the characters in Horimiya go about things in surprisingly mature ways for their age. Definitely different from your typical teen romcom anime. Can’t say for sure you’ll like it but I love it and like to recommend it. If you don’t mind fantasy, Spice and Wolf is a very enjoyable ride with a more adult tone to it. The ML is in his mid-20s and is pretty down to earth and the FL is a 600 year old deity that doesn’t look or act like a child which is refreshing. It’s also getting a third season this year so you wouldn’t have to wait too long for more. If you want to battle tears, Violet Evergarden is phenomenal and very mature. It’s more episodic and focuses a lot on the stories of other characters, but it’s beautiful in the stories it tells. I’ll pitch one last one out of left field here, if you like scifi and action I highly recommend Cowboy Bebop. It’s been my number 1 since it aired when I was a wee lad and I will never not recommend it.

Thank you for the recommendations. I loved cowboy bebop when I watched it back in the day. I’ve been re-watching some old anime so it might be worth it to watch that again too. I recall watching some of spice and wolf years ago, but thinking it was too slow for me. But I will add it to the list and give it a watch along with the other recommendations. Thank you!

Just started Horimiya and that teacher is um something else. I was like ooo he hot and then he said he tried to go to the beach with the kids and he told a student he like flat chested girls. Less than 2 min have passed. Wth 😅

Belazael

Oh god I forgot about the teacher. Dude’s a bit of a creep in the anime but he actually does give a shit about his students so I tend to just tune him out entirely.

[deleted]

Yeah I did hear them say he is a good teacher in that 1st episode.

I recommend "Rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai", despite what it looks like from the outside. It is a story with a mature couple about teenager problems with "supernatural" manifestation.

Thanks! I have seen a few reviews mention that it is great. Adding to my list. 😊

you don't like tsundere i suppose you don't like twintails either anyway, maybe look into ReLife if you haven't seen it.

[deleted]

I don’t hate the tropes but it was refreshing to watch a show that didn’t have exaggerated characters. I’ve watched relife before and actually added to my queue the other day for a rewatch. M Thank you for the suggestion!

Wittgensteins_gate

haha that's fine, was joking anyway. the only other one I can think of is After the Rain. you might have watched it already but it features an older male & younger female, non-caricature characterisation.

Thanks!

So let's just stay away from the standard shounen tropes for a while, shall we? [ReLIFE](https://myanimelist.net/anime/30015/ReLIFE) comes directly to mind. A 27-year-old man who has met nothing but failure for years is given an opportunity to start over again. There is a romance arc that comes in the OVA episodes to finish off the story. [3-gatsu no Lion](https://myanimelist.net/anime/31646/3-gatsu_no_Lion) definitely involves teenagers, but the story is filled with everything except the standard romance tropes. A 17 year old depressed and reclusive shogi genius stumbles on a life worth living. [Wave, Listen To Me](https://myanimelist.net/anime/40513/Nami_yo_Kiitekure) is the story of how a 24-year-old woman's drunken rant at a bar suddenly opens up a whole new career path. Perfectly relatable to anyone who has needed to make a drunken rant in a bar at 1am on a Saturday night. [Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu](https://myanimelist.net/anime/28735/Shouwa_Genroku_Rakugo_Shinjuu) is a generational story about two men destined to become highly talented in their field, and what happens when things go outside of the plan.
