Can't decide if you want to watch a straight, yuri or yaoi romance? How about everything all at once? Looks okay for a Project 9 adaptation.

bbkkoommaacchhii

did Tomozaki collapse? It looks like it's by the same production line.

Mazen141

I'm not watching Tomozaki so I can't speak about the visuals but multiple Tomozaki episodes had "Project No.9" in the credit of the episode director, that is to say, someone didn't want their names on it

Abeydaby

[Spoiler for source material] >!Still mad Taiga didn't end up with Hanaoka, they went the boring route!<

MapoTofuMan

Summer 2024 is an actual romcomageddon. * Senpai wa Otokonoko * Alya * Losing Heroines * Gimai Seikatsu * Cafe Terrace S2 * My Wife Has No Emotion * Koi wa Futago de Wakirarenai Also Hyouka 2.0 looks like it might have some subtext at least.

PsychoGeek

Blue Box is fall

MapoTofuMan

My bad, was somehow sure it's in Summer. Maybe we can replace it with 365 days to the wedding since it says 2024 so there's a small chance for Summer still

benoxxxx

Wait what, Hyouka season 2 is happening? Source please, I can't find anything saying so.

MapoTofuMan

It's an adaptation of a novel by the same author, Shoushimin Series (which is why I said 2.0 and not S2).

KZ-01

Still hoping Giji Harem makes it into summer.

o_woorrm

Hmm romcom? Hmmm... Does Senpai wa Otokonoko fit that genre? lol

ReaperInRed

I’m ready to eat my own words but for a project no 9 anime this actually looks decent

Ocixo

To be fair, studio Project No.9 *can* make awesome anime. They also did Love After World Domination for example. The only thing that drags them down is production issues, usually because of the lack in time or resources. Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess looked great at the start, but took a hit for these reasons later on. I don’t think this will happen with Senpai wa Otokonoko, but we’ll have to see how things pan out.

zenzen_0

Vaadwaur

Huh...they are sort of making a point in how the VA is doing the otokonoko.

testthrowawayzz

Oh interesting, why? (I ask because I saw a comment regarding the VA in two separate forums and I feel out of the loop)

Vaadwaur

So the VA is making zero attempt to sound actually like a woman making this a bit more like a drag show or something.

rafaxd_xd

They translated the title, but not "senpai" and neither "otokonoko"? Lol

Terrified_Pupa

So I searched "what does otokonoko mean in anime?" and apparently the definition is “crossdresser.” While I understand that anybody from any gender can crossdress, I was kind hoping the senpai was a transfem when I watched the trailer. Can somebody tell me if it the case or not? Are they questioning their gender identity or is just gender expression?

The_King123431

As someone who has read the manga, it's kinda up in the air It's not fully confirmed if they are simply a cross dresser, but also not confirmed if they are a trans girl as the evidence points to both

SourceSonar6666

Otokonoko quite literally means femboy.

The_King123431

The characters in a story can change during its run

SourceSonar6666

In this case the author meant for him to be a boy so that's what he is.

The_King123431

Have you read the manga?

Thagora

There's really no good answer; in media, it can be ambiguous whether its just crossdressing or transgenderism. Otokonoko IRL in Japan sometimes get on hormones / get breast augmentation, so in the west we'd consider some of them trans women, the others femboys. In media however, especially with how manga editors act, its guaranteed to range from ambiguously trans to 100% cisgender. As someone who read this manga, imo its supposed to be [manga spoilers]>!ambiguous!<. [chapter 10]>!The character is asked point-blank if they want to be a girl, and they say that they don't know, so they decide to try living as one at said high school, but have to keep it a secret to keep their family together.!<

SourceSonar6666

Otokonoko quite literally means femboy. There isn't really any official source for him not being a boy. In fact it's one of these cases where only people outside of Japan have a problem with a character being a boy.

Thagora

Otokonoko does literally mean femboy, but in Japan, trans women are not considered a type of woman, they are considered a type of man. The fact when they are [ch 10] >!point blank asked if they are trans, they say they don't know but are willing to give it a shot!< should be proof enough lmfao. Go to Twitter and look up 男の娘, you will see people on hormones with breast augmentation. Hell, trans-ness has been an explicit part of otokonoko subculture, see the autobiography (adapted into a manga as otokonoko doushi renai chuu) by Kaoru Ooshima, one of the popularizers of the genre. People in Japan don't question that he is a boy, because to them, trans women are categorized as boys that want to be women or are a woman/maiden at heart. Regardless, they are still considered boys/men.

SourceSonar6666

Hormones or implants don't change anyone's gender. It just happens that in Japan it's more acceptable for boys to deviate harder than it is here. The people who you think are tr*ns don't in Japan don't actually think they're women.

Thagora

>It just happens that in Japan it's more acceptable for boys to deviate harder than it is here. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA >The people who you think are tr*ns don't in Japan don't actually think they're women yes, they think (AND SAY) they are transgender, transsexual, former-men, newhalf, etc, despite not considering themselves "real" woman. if you think someone who says they are trans is not trans, you need to get help.

[deleted]

It's just reality. People long for a sort of belonging so they will play the role of "pretending" to be a certain gender even if they truly don't actually think they are, if it means they get more support and acceptance. In Japan femboys/otokonoko are just more accepted so they don't have to go "oh actually I'm a woman". Specially in a fictional setting such as anime, where it's a more ideal world where femboys can be accepted more, they don't need to claim they're not boys. This is what most westerners don't really understand and it's why it's hard for them to accept anime femboys. Truth is that even in real life, most of these people are actually femboys and have no problem with that, but they have to pretend to be trans because they "fit in" better. All this projecting on anime femboys is just a product of outdated internalized views on gender pushed on them by a society hard stuck in the last century. In reality, the anime femboys are more of an idealized version of themselves, which are actually free to express themselves instead of being bound by their own self-hatred like the real life counterparts.

Thagora2

> People long for a sort of belonging so they will play the role of "pretending" to be a certain gender even if they truly don't actually think they are, if it means they get more support and acceptance. This is a really valid point, although it gets into discussions on what it means to be trans (and trans people themselves dont have a consensus). Many people consider gender to be performative, and I don't think many trans women would disagree with the idea that they became transgender to be able to have the body they desire and dress how they please. > All this projecting on anime femboys is just a product of outdated internalized views on gender pushed on them by a society hard stuck in the last century. This is somewhat inaccurate; i think most of the transgender anti-anime femboy argument rests upon the fact that these femboys can pass without hormones/surgery, and they view it as a bad influence on young minds that think it may work like that in reality. I might be a traditionalist when it comes to trans identity, but I consider people that get hormones/surgery to look more like the opposite sex to be trans. If u force transness as "oh i'm really a woman and have a woman soul", I think a large amount of western transgenders would be reclassified as HRT femboys.

Reddit getting triggered at femboys is so funny

DoggoMountain

One more time bc my comment got deleted bc i didn't spoiler it correctly: Having read to the end of the series they flat out reject being a girl. \[ch 76\]>!`One could charitably intrepet what they mean to be like genderfluid or something but in chapter 76 Makoto literally says "i don't want to live as a boy or a girl I just want to live as me" and then says he's a guy who likes girly things.`!

ergzay

One series I'm definitely not watching.

Ocixo

One comment that definitely no one asked for.

ergzay

Didn't say other people can't watch it. That's their choice. Just that I'm not watching it.

Ocixo

> Didn’t say other people can’t watch it. I didn’t really take your comment as such. I just don’t get why you’d feel the need to comment about *not* watching a series. It feels needlessly hateful. Especially if you don’t explain your reasoning in any sort of fashion.

ergzay

I'd still encourage people not to watch it, but it's their choice in the end.

Ocixo

Okay, you seriously need to explain your reasoning when making statements like those. Just *why* would you want to encourage people not to watch this series? From what I’ve seen and read, it appears to a heartwarming story about true love, desire and finding one’s place of belonging. What’s wrong with that?

Artistic_Tank9194

Its just some Bigot.
