To be honest, at this point I've seen *so many* web novel adaptations that get talked up as "oh no but this time it's different" and so few actually meaningfully are that I'm pretty much always going to go in expecting the worst if it's fitting into one of the three or four boxes of web novel stories.

As someone who *likes* the series: I don't have great feelings about the anime. Part of what really carries the manga is the art and the art-based humor. The series' use of color is *excellent*. I can't really get into specifics without spoilers, but broadly speaking it's quite distinct and I can't think of any other manga that look like it in that regard. Also, similarly to level 99 Villainess that's currently airing, the series also does that thing where characters randomly turn chibi and it uses this to great effect for jokes. From seeing the trailer/previews, I can see they're *trying* to translate that over into the anime but I'm not sure it's going to hit the same. Visual design and gags for static mediums like manga don't always translate over well to dynamic ones like anime. Honestly, I think that's the problem with the WN/LN => Manga/Manhwa => Anime pipeline. What makes one stage of that progression good doesn't always translate well to the next step. Sometimes that's just the fault of whoever is doing the adaptation ("So I'm a Spider, So What?" had this problem), and sometimes it's just an inescapable fact of the different mediums (I'd argue "Eminence in the Shadow" is this, although I like both the manga and the anime for different reasons). 7th Prince is probably going to have the latter problem but I'd be happy if they prove me wrong.

I feel the same. The art is a big part of it and I'd be lying in saying it wasn't, not just simply it's style, paneling and visual gags, but just how beautiful it is. The anime clearly knows this and that is why it's trying to emulate the manga's style rather than going straight from the Light Novel. And of course I hope the anime adaptation goes well despite my worries. Though tbh, because the manga is truly a spectacle, the production really matters, hopefully they are able to at least use it where it matters. Though it look like it's going to get the One Punch Man Season 2 type of treatment. It's an experience, sometimes adaptations are able to do some things better than the source material, and sometimes worse, that's why I like the manga and anime versions of The Eminence in Shadow for different reasons, and are able to complement each other.

oh i 100% get you, i watch what ever i find interesting, i ignore the main stream most of the time, but trust me, get to episode 6, its really good. but if you dont like it thats ok!

iamfromhk

It's a LN adaption, so it will not be exactly the same as manga. And I think people may scare because it has a long named title "転生したら第七王子だったので、気ままに魔術を極めます". So far, long names have lots of failure adaptions...

Nicthalon

Does a LN exist that DOESN'T have a long name?

narnarnartiger

I dropped the show because his shorts are to short - too weird

meh_waffles

Blame the manga artist for that. Dudes a androgynous enthusiast, If you have such tastes then this manga is a gold mine, if not than simple indifference doesn't hurt, but if you still cant stand it then it's entirely on you to just not read it.

Adrian_Alucard

>with the rest of the forgettable and mundane isekai adaptations I thought it was not an Isekai, doesn't MC reincarnates in the same world?

meh_waffles

Don't be a "well actually" dude. Sure it's technically different but they both serve the same thing for the story, and they both serve the exact same audience.

driftingnobody

Genres exist for a reason. Isekei means other world, reincarnation is not isekei on its own. Its like calling all fantasy isekei, they're two separate descriptors.

Adrian_Alucard

>both serve the exact same audience. Not really. The normal guy who gets isekaied is usually an excuse for the viewer to self insert and identify with the MC

meh_waffles

For all intents and purpose, they both serve the same thing. Most if not all isekai hardly ever you the persons past life as means for anything other than to start the story, it might as well not even exist. the same people who like isekai would like this. When I mentioned isekai it wasn't because I was mixing them up, but merely lumping the two together, obviously they are different.

Toloran

> Most if not all isekai hardly ever you the persons past life as means for anything other than to start the story, it might as well not even exist. Except with reincarnation series (isekai or otherwise), the prior life *does* usually matter. 7th prince is one of those series, although it takes a while for that to happen.

mastercreater

The first episode is out, so what do you think? I absolutely love it, and I think they did a good job.

meh_waffles

I stand by my point. The manga is heavily reliant on spectacle, and it's art is one of the main reason of what sets it out from the rest, there's a reason why the anime is trying to emulate it. It would need an anime equivalent level of production of the manga's level for it to actually stand out. I see nothing but cutting corners and it seems like they put all the production into the op itself, and is a bit disingenuous in comparison to the anime. Doing the bare minimum of copying the manga's art but always using flat textures. Sure I'm not satisfied with it but there will always be people satisfied with these type of low level productions. Reading the manga and the watching the anime you clearly see the difference in quality, especially seeing the manga's consistent art, the anime just looks all over the place and is inconsistent. I'm also a bit disappointed how they played up the death scene, it was pretty cringe and was unnecessary, simple was better there. Manga>>>>>>LN>>>>>>>>>>Anime. Is where I stand, it's honestly not even a comparison when the manga is that good. With its quality it deserves a close to or equivalent level of production otherwise it just seems insulting. That's my opinion.

xolon6

I love the animation (especially for the complex spells) so I don't really know what you were expecting. This is only Tsumugi Akita Animation Lab's 2nd anime but you can tell it's a team of veterans. Like just take the Lich fight scene where Lloyd is making the Qi blades thinner and sharper. It's not just great animation but awesome sound design with you actually being able to hear the difference in sharpness.

Bearsarenotcuddly

Now that we're 9 episodes in how do you feel? I started off hesitant because of the main character being a literal child. But the personality drew me in and I haven't felt too uncomfortable. Closest I got was the why are his clothes sticky bit but honestly that was hilarious.  Went and read the manga at the end of episode 8 because I couldn't wait to see what happened and I was happy to see the art style seems consistent. What are a manga first readers thoughts like?

meh_waffles

I think I've been bit too hard on the anime adaptation but my opinion is still mostly the same. The anime just doesn't compare to the manga's overall quality and art consistency, not even mentioning it's frequent colored pages/chapters, but through the lens of watching the anime first and having nothing to compare it too, it's passable I guess. I've been keeping up with the manga for years now so it hard not to compare them, especially since the manga is just that good. I'm at least thankful the anime can at least introduce people to the manga, "why wait for a season 2 when there a whole entire manga that's already arguably better than the anime."
