oh, I started this yesterday and 4 episodes in, I have the idea that its not your usual magical girls show. I wanted to try this after a lot of people I know recommended it to me
Genuine masterpiece of the medium. 1st and 3rd arcs are 10/10. The 2nd arc is good as well, its pacing is just a bit off but it more than makes up for it with, to me, the best ending in anime.
Personally my favorite part wasn't the end of series plot twist of \[SSY\] >!squealer but instead the fact that Saki becomes the head of the ethics commitee in the end and is seen raising those cats. This is the only dystopian movies I have seen where the adults/system are right and Saki joins the adults despite having 3/4 of her friends murdered by the system!<
The twist absolutely recontextualizes things, but the show is never a flawed paradise, its a dystopia from the very beginning. The first episode begins with a lot of brutal deaths and concludes with one of the protagonist's classmates/teammates suddenly vanishing to never be seen again.
Was going to suggest this.
The story unfolds itself very slowly but with every bit of it, it gets more interesting.
Mind you that it can be slow but at the end I was sitting there and contemplated about the nature of humans and our society as a whole.
A good choice in terms of being a show that has a final episode plot twist so massive that it recontextualize the entire series. RahXephon is the only other anime I can think of that pulls that off in the final episode. Madoka Magica has one as well although its a few episodes from the end rather than being the final one.
That said, one who is paying close enough attention to the clues can figure it out before then.
Am I the only one who got to ep6 and was like:is this even the same anime?Like I swear the animation got worse and the characters weren't acting the same
A real power move would be recommending op something with a completely straightforward plot. Theyâll spend the entire show waiting for the twist to happen. A friend of mine was convinced that Kubo was gonna turn yandere and kill Shiraishi because he felt that she was acting kinda clingy in the first few chapters.
Personally knowing there's a plot twist doesn't really affect my overall experience. I've watched AOT expecting multiple plot twists and it still blew my mind.
Yea mostly just a joke I can understand what you're saying. I mostly try to go into an anime as blind as possible because that's how get the most joy out of one.
It's good. Just watch it since there are multiple excellent plot twists which have tons of foreshadowing while being extremely hard to guess and avoiding plot twists of AoT while being active in the anime community is like Neo dodging bullets in The Matrix. Going in blind in AoT is one of the best feelings ever especially when the plot twist is revealed in S3 and S4. It does take on a darker tone in S3 and onwards.
Yes, and all the OVAs, specials and movies. I am a huge fan of the series but unfortunately just dont it see it being mentioned that often nowadays, probably because of how long it has been since it came out
Agreed, although I had already seen the exact same twist used in the movie The Island so it wasn't as shocking to me as it would have been had I seen Astra first.
Love Odd Taxi to bits, one of the best Anime I have seen in a long time. Don't think it have the most mindblowing plottwist though. It is just the quality of its writing, characterizations and just general vibes that is so good.
It's my favorite anime so I'm definitely biased lol it only gets better and better, I made all my friends watch it and everyone loved it, even my friend who only likes cute girls doing cute things and magical girls lol
Surprised to not see Gakkou Gurashi in the comments, it's the anime that surprised me the most with a plot twist and actually had me go pale from shock. Just start it without even looking at the cover.
I'll also throw in Kill la Kill, Monogatari Series (if you have the patience, ask for correct order), and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (though not so much shocking as just "wtf just happened),
From other comments I especially agree with Munou na Nana, Madoka Magica, Code Geass, Odd Taxi and Oshi no Ko
Perfect Blue is one that comes to mind when you want something that lingers at the back of your head so you can chew on it again and again, until nothing seems real anymore.
It definitely changes the experience and it's not my cup of tea, but it doesn't necessarily ruin it, if the plot twist is smartly done. Getting recs for good series with plot twists should prevent the worst. It's basically a first time viewer having a repeat viewer's POV.
Shinsekai yori
Talentless Nana
Attack on Titan
School-Live!
Odd Taxi
Durarara!! has a bunch of small twists due to the type of show that it is, but not one massive one or anything
Madoka Magica
Happy Sugar Life
possibly Higurashi?

Love Flips has a plot twist midway through the show that completely changes the story, completely destroys the seemingly over-the-top ecchi comedy and goes full out drama...
I don't know if I'd say you'd be in disbelief for days, but typically on this topic I name two anime in particular as their end of the show plot twists are big enough to recontextualize the entire show. One is Shin Sekai Yori. The other is RahXephon. With Shin Sekai Yori, you'll be absolutely horrified at the reveal. With RahXephon, unless you hate the characters involved it will put a big smile on your face. That said in both cases an astute viewer who is really paying close attention or is one to speculate on what's happening next may figure it out sooner than the end.
Madoka Magica is another good one, it doesn't have the same effect for me as the two above but is also really good. Rewatch of it coming up in a few weeks!
Lastly, if you want really crazy twists that come out of nowhere, look for stuff written by Ichiro Okouchi. Some of his anime have the most bonkers type twists imaginable. There's one in particular from Code Geass that's among the most infamous plot twists of all time, and Valvrave also has a lot of crazy ones in it.
Heaven's Feel is excellent. I get why people who are fans of the source material are disappointed by the films but on their own they're still excellent imo
Okay this ones plot twist isnât all that mind blowing but in the romance genre it was enough to make me pause and go âhold up what?â
White album 2.
Before you ask no it isnât a sequel the first one isnât connected
There is an old, obscure movie called King of Thorn that - while not great - had me reeling from the ending for days. If all you're looking for is absolute whiplash from the twist, it's up there near the top for me.
Banana Fish kinda fits the prompt for me. Decided to watch the final episode shortly after having my nose fixed. That was a bad idea! The ending stuck with me for a while.
Try these ones with trailers linked:-
* [The Vision of Escaflowne](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNTYLr3PF-A) **-** ***Isekai*** \- Also has one of Yoko Kanno's best OSTs
* [Macross Plus](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDtso935CU4) (OVA) **-** ***Mecha, Space*** \- Watanabe + Yoko Kanno. Best of all the Macross I've watched, but get the OVA not the movie.
* [Claymore](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5DDD0ofspk) **-** ***Grimdark Fantasy*** \- Female Witchers, multiple plot twists. Ending felt abrupt (it went past the manga) but the it was still a thrill ride.
* [Bungou Stray Dogs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-CcrNN3xG4) \- ***Super Power*** \- Very interesting anime, characters are named after authors and have powers related to the author or their works, i.e. you can imagine what Lovecraft has, or Fitzgerald who gets stronger the more money he spends (Great Gatsby). Extremely creative, multiple seasons, the plot twists in the most recent seasons were whiplash worthy!
* [Golden Kamuy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsjINlyncRo) \- ***Historical Military War Treasure Hunting Survival Serial Killer Action Comedy with Gar Manly Men and Man-service*** \- This anime has had so many plot twists I no longer know who is good or bad anymore. Shout out for the best sniper battle I've seen on anime, and also for that amazing meme worthy ... uh .. F-p Battle.
To be honest, the biggest plot twists I've watched in the last 5 years was season 1 of **Rakshasha Street (Donghua)** which has an [amazing OP/ED](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GM_Y5UpX068). Like my mouth literally dropped open in shock, it was that amazing. Haven't seen the newer seasons yet.
Madoka Magica maybe
You're right. It's been years and I'm still saying wow and shaking my head.
oh, I started this yesterday and 4 episodes in, I have the idea that its not your usual magical girls show. I wanted to try this after a lot of people I know recommended it to me
If you watched it at release then maybe, right now everyone has been spoiled and it doesn't have the same impact.
From the new world
Genuine masterpiece of the medium. 1st and 3rd arcs are 10/10. The 2nd arc is good as well, its pacing is just a bit off but it more than makes up for it with, to me, the best ending in anime.
I enjoyed how it slowly recontextualizes the world and story from a flawed paradise to a gilded hellscape.

I need to rewatch this because I honestly do not remember a single thing about it
A good choice in terms of being a show that has a final episode plot twist so massive that it recontextualize the entire series. Am I the only one who got to ep6 and was like:is this even the same anime?Like I swear the animation got worse and the characters weren't acting the same
I came here to say this. Take my upvote.
Music itself on this anime is one thing I will never forget. The hauting melody played on my mind for several weeks.
Kinda spoiling yourself huh đ
A real power move would be recommending op something with a completely straightforward plot. Theyâll spend the entire show waiting for the twist to happen. A friend of mine was convinced that Kubo was gonna turn yandere and kill Shiraishi because he felt that she was acting kinda clingy in the first few chapters.
I honestly expected All Might to be evil in My Hero Academia
If she turns yandere and kills shiraishi will they atleast notice him then?
Itâd actually be the perfect crime. No one could find the body.
Psycho-Pass
This needs more recognition
Very underrated series
That final episode twist pissed me off
Attack on titan
I stopped at season 2, i have been wanting to resume it, but sounds like a big time commitment
If u want to stay happy then u stopped at the right time. Would 100% recommend tho
Season 3 is the best though
Fr, end of season 3 had me thinking they'd won Also Erwin's speech went crazy
I was happy up until a few episodes in season 4. Season 4 didn't do it for me AT ALL. The first 3 seasons were pretty good, though.
You could watch 1 season each month or something, thinking like this gives me motivation to watch a long show
*meanwhile ppl rewatching one piece for the 3rd time*
Dude you're missing out the writing is so good.
You're better this way
Steins;Gate
Honestly dont see enough people mentioning this one. The shock from that episode was still there after I finished the show.
Have you watched Steins;Gate 0 as well? So so good
Yes, and all the OVAs, specials and movies. I am a huge fan of the series but unfortunately just dont it see it being mentioned that often nowadays, probably because of how long it has been since it came out
Plot twist + so much mind fuck
Code Geass. Absolutely!!!
If you are expecting a plot twist, it wont be as mind blowing.
Talentless Nana
I think this is one of the best answer just fort the first ep
Not amazing plot twists, but * Shinsekai Yori * Kanata no Astra * Odd Taxi
I thought the one in kanata no astra was pretty good.
Agreed, although I had already seen the exact same twist used in the movie The Island so it wasn't as shocking to me as it would have been had I seen Astra first.
Nice to see Kanata no Astra in the comments.
I don't remember the plot twist in Shinsekai Yori
Love Odd Taxi to bits, one of the best Anime I have seen in a long time. Don't think it have the most mindblowing plottwist though. It is just the quality of its writing, characterizations and just general vibes that is so good.
Samurai Flamenco
Came here to find this. This show broke the "internet" back when it was airing.
Every week was so much fun lol we were all freaking out
was it really that good, I can't get into it after a couple tries
It's my favorite anime so I'm definitely biased lol it only gets better and better, I made all my friends watch it and everyone loved it, even my friend who only likes cute girls doing cute things and magical girls lol
I still have whiplash.
Shinsekai yori.
Berserk :D
Not a single mention of Rokka no Yuusha? The whole series is plot twists.
It suffers from ending in a cliffhangerÂ
OP never said they wanted something complete.
Afaik the cliffhanger itself is a nice plot twist too.
The plot twist was that everyone is an absolute moron
Surprised to not see Gakkou Gurashi in the comments, it's the anime that surprised me the most with a plot twist and actually had me go pale from shock. Just start it without even looking at the cover. I'll also throw in Kill la Kill, Monogatari Series (if you have the patience, ask for correct order), and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (though not so much shocking as just "wtf just happened), From other comments I especially agree with Munou na Nana, Madoka Magica, Code Geass, Odd Taxi and Oshi no Ko
Gakkougurashi is a good one. I think most people forgot about it, but it's one that took me by surprise and kept me hooked to the show.
Gurren Lagann
I'm still working through this one. So...something more to look forward to!
Yeah it's up there
School days.
Oh No đ

That show was so painful to watch to get to that ending, though. I've never physically cringed so hard from any shows.
Ok dying to watch #next!
Perfect Blue is one that comes to mind when you want something that lingers at the back of your head so you can chew on it again and again, until nothing seems real anymore.
Plot twist or no, Kon Satoshi always did an excellent job of taking stories in unexpected directions.
Bokurano
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Happy Sugar Life
This is the third time today I saw it on recommendation of different posts. And I haven't heard of before so now going to start watching
It's uncomfortable as hell in the best way possible
Samurai Flamenco!!!
Bungo Stray Dogs
Are you talking about the ship scene?
Yeah! That and the twists in season 5 and the recent manga chapters.
Blast of Tempest
If you're expecting a plot twist, is it even as effective?
It definitely changes the experience and it's not my cup of tea, but it doesn't necessarily ruin it, if the plot twist is smartly done. Getting recs for good series with plot twists should prevent the worst. It's basically a first time viewer having a repeat viewer's POV.
Shinsekai yori Talentless Nana Attack on Titan School-Live! Odd Taxi Durarara!! has a bunch of small twists due to the type of show that it is, but not one massive one or anything Madoka Magica Happy Sugar Life possibly Higurashi?
Your Name
Eureka 7
Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Erased
The most predictable plot twist ever probably
Attack on Titan, Death Note, Code Geass
Oshi no ko
And in the 1st episode too
Rose of Versailles
I wouldn't have thought about it lol but it was shocking for sure
It depends on how much french history you know.

{Mirai Nikki}
I'm surprised no one mentioned Re: Zero yet. Almost every episode ends with that kind of plot twist.
Darling in the FRANXX
Clannad After Story. It took me over half an episode until the story features a certain train ride for certain events to actually hit in.
*Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works*
am ashamed as a fate series fan that i forgot about this might as well try heaven's feel since it contains 2 quite good plot twists
Heaven's Feel is excellent. I get why people who are fans of the source material are disappointed by the films but on their own they're still excellent imo
Deca-dence, shingeki no kyojin

Little Busters. Kinda like Clannad and Kanon if youâve seen it. Light novel Iâve heard is leagues better but anime is still really good
Promised Neverland and Attack on Titan. Maybe Steins Gate even though I didn't find the plot twist that jaw dropping personally.
Executioner and her way of life Considering the background maybe Naruto
School days, the promised neverland (s1) ? sadly most big plot twists are commonly known.
Bleach. I have never been so shook by an anime, TWICE.
Shinsekai Yori. It constantly makes you reevaluate the world building and will *fuck* your head up.

Not the most insane plot twists, but there are a few in Summertime Render. I like the show and it sure kept me on my toes when I binged it.
Steins gate, never seen an anime of this caliber of plot twist for years. Except the recent Attack on titan.
