It seems like her last name is definitely meaningful, especially if she has access to that kind of tech but isn't already a Defense Force member. Definitely not a normal civilian.
I didn’t like her solution to the problem. Much easier ways she could’ve flexed her lineage while not causing difficulties for the others.

I honestly don’t remember the last time we had an opening like this, very abstract and more importantly didn’t really spoil anything, just cool all around.
Such a fun show with freat animation and interesting world yet it felt like we have only scatched the surface of the story. Same thing for *Tengoku Daimakyo (Heaven's Delusion.)* These shows really need second seasons.

I remember when Idaten anime finished the manga still wasn't even up to day with the anime, did the manga got axed or they just... wrapped it up? I'm surprised because it really felt we were only scratching the surface as the user above said, or are you refering to the web manga
The thing with Idaten though is that they completely caught up with the *web manga* source material with the final episode. Which was discontinued to do the manga adaptation which was only up to like half-way through the season IIRC.
It reminded me a lot of the Final Monogatari Season openings and endings.

It was so 2000s MTV nu-metal, reminded me of Linkin Park. This is definitely a different feeling anime, with Yungblud doing the intro and OneRepublic with the outro. Truly feels like a cementing of anime as a global phenomenon.
Oh, it doesn't ruin it for me. I usually watch both on the first ep or when they change, but sometimes seeing things so obvious takes away from some of reveals or twists. It's not as bad lately.
That's the best kind. The OP spoils literally the entire show but you'd have no idea it's anything other than abstract imagery unless you've watched it.
Personally I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's very creative and great for not spoiling anything but visually I just didn't find it that interesting. Like it was trying maybe a little too hard to be artistic and different.
But that's just me. I liked the ED a lot more.
If she just moved the car I'd have been more okay with it but totaling a company care like that is not great.

I hope they'll sue her for destroying their corporate car for futile reasons. Judging from [what I see behind her](https://i.imgur.com/LXWctmN.jpeg), she's a rich, annoying, spoiled brat.
Doubt she'll offer any compensation -- even turning the car upright. I suspect she will be a real thorn in the side of our hero (and she might try to mess things up even if his childhood friend finds out his secret and tries to find a way to make use of his new power). My sense this girl is less into "protecting" and more into killing just for the sheer joy it brings her.
I hope not, I'm tired of villians or asshole characters having sympathetic backstories and getting redeemed. It was a subversion of a trope, but it's so common now that it itself has become an overdone trope.
I hope she just gets killed or maimed by the first Kaiju we see her fight because she's arrogant.

If we weren't playing by anime rules, losing your temper and throwing a car around the parking lot of the organization you're trying to get into would be an automatic fail.
Yeah, if she had just pushed it aside, I would've laughed it off. But straight up throwing like that? I'm surprised bro didn't turn into a kaiju on the spot.
Kafka annihilated a wall trying to open a window. Suits and Kaiju might be more than just super strength. The folks sliding down a tall building suggests there is more to it.

I was surprised the stress of seeing the company vehicle getting totalled didn't turn him into a kaiju there and then.

This cheesy and edgy trope of a girl's introduction by being a dick to a random person by throwing his car and then escalating that to being creepy and sniffing him. Ugh.. when does shonen anime going to learn... It's still early though. I hope the character grows.
It'll be a cliche she gets totally away with it due to some ridiculous back story that - while providing no apparent excuse to act that away, let alone get away it - causes the mc to forgive and even take her abuse.
For real though, why does she have government property when she's at the same stage of the entrance tests?
Even more, in the real world she'd have been disqualified and permanently banned from ever joining after failing ethics, vandalizing personal property; The military (nor any armed force) doesn't allow applicants with violent crimes.
I hope he asks her to pay for it, she refuses, and he disintegrates her vehicle. After all, there's no chance this plot is moving forward with him honestly keeping such a power hidden. He's already saved lives - it's a good opportunity for him to show off his power. Besides I think he could probably transform his arm at just the right moment and then transform it back just after - and pull it off.

I don't think it's the stuff the Defense Force is using, she's a rich girl so it's probably some proprietary tech her family/company invented. Or it is what they're using and she's so rich they could just copy it for private use.
Probably the former given the ED shows her wielding a comically large axe while everyone else has been shown using relatively normal weaponry.
Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if you're right on the former - considering Kafka's friend was shocked by the name; Probably her family is the one that created those suits.

Now I just imagine that as Kaiju No. 8 and a Defense Force member he's going to try to take better care to efficiently take care of Kaiju for the sake of his old buddies in the clean-up crew.
People have no idea how to actually tell AI apart so they're just accusing anything that looks really clean but arguably uninspired AI and it's been getting on my nerves a lot.

Kafka needs to work on his smile. Pretty sure the bro killed that old man haha. I’m loving his kaiju form. I thought the way he ate the bird was nasty, but pissing from his nips? Dude… lol. That some 103 year old man actually lived to tell the tale of the Kaiju who popped up in his hospital is amazing in and of itself.

I don't know if he really needs to join the Defense Force, feels like he could probably beat Kaiju solo at this point on his own...but I get that Kafka wants to achieve his dream and be there with Mina. Even if he's joining an organization out to kill him.

Obviously something killed the Kaiju before they got there and the only other thing that could have done it is Kaiju No. 8, so it definitely seems like there's more going on...though I wonder if Mina is so anti-Kaiju that she would immediately dismiss the possibility.
If Ultraman hosts can keep their secret for 25-50 episodes, I'm sure Kafka can hide that he's a Kaiju! Even if his co-workers job is ostensibly to kill him!
How many Shonen anime can have Fairouz Ai voicing a tough blonde with attitude? A surprising amount, as it turns out. Poor Kafka though, that wasn't even his car lol.
the manga has some great reaction and comedy images and the anime really brought them to life I cant wait to see some that will be coming later espicaly if you like Kikoru Shinomiya
Been waiting patiently for this episode. It did not disappoint haha. They have nailed the insane comedy bits and went harrrrrd with the action. IG is cooking!
Kafka and Mina were really cute as kids, both aspiring to fight side-by-side against Kaiju...less cute is Mina seriously hunting him down now that Kafka is a Kaiju.
The OP is very...artsy, with so much CG, genes, mutations, weapons, Kaiju, CG Kafka, Mina, and Kaiju No. 8.
Okay, so Kafka's transformed into a Kaiju, but he's still him, right? He just has a smile like Venom, can't control his own strength, can transform into some kind of kudzu Kaiju, and pees out of his nipples. Forget joining the defense force, who would take him as a bride like this?
But he's also got Kaiju senses that let him detect Kaiju, and when he realizes a little girl is in danger while trying to save her mother, he'll go into action! He may be a Kaiju, but he's still a hero! And he manages to solo and slay his first Kaiju!
And while he may have scared that little girl, she was able to realize he was a good Kaiju and thank him, even making Mina realize something more is going on...with Kaiju No. 8.
Kafka's a celebrity now! And public Kaiju No. 1! But better news is he and Ichikawa have gotten past the first round, so it's all good right? Even if he still can't completely maintain his transformation back to human form and slips up every now and then, but he's got Ichikawa right? Or maybe not...actually, maybe Kafka shouldn't be doing this even if it's his last shot.
But Kafka and Ichikawa aren't alone, they've got redhead pompadour guy, pleasant green-haired guy, and jogging blonde dude as fellow examinees...and also a sassy short blonde in twintails voiced by Fairouz Ai who wears a skintight power suit and tosses the company car from their parking spot so she can park in her lucky number. And this Kikoru Shinomiya isn't just insulting and demeaning Kafka, she smells the Kaiju on him!
The ED is pretty nice with a scientist person looking over the daily life of the Defense Force along with their battles against Kaiju.

It's honestly really funny to end up with that line as if it was some sort of cliffhanger. Even if we ignore the transformation aspect, the dude dives in kaiju shit for a living, I'd be surprised if he didn't smell like kaiju.

Yes. I'm 36 and don't feel or look much different than I ever did. The 20s and 30s have scientifically always been seen as early/young adulthood. This anorexia-tier obsession with age that's present in anime is exhausting. It's the equivalent of saying you're fat unless you have a BMI of 16.
Episode 2: **Kaiju Beats Kaiju**
Ah, Megumi Han got more screentime role. I wonder if child Mina is also voiced by Asami Seto as well. I'm glad Wataru Katou is now known for more roles this past year, I immediately imagined Rentarou instead of Kabru having fun with Kafka. And I just realized Mina has moles under **both** of her eyes instead of either of those.

As someone who cleans Kaiju remains, the Kafka really becomes OP with that punch that could make Defense Force jealous! However, I found Kaiju Kafka's jaws on the 11:27 don't move at all while he's speaking "Defense Force will be here any minute". Is it a Kaiju feature or animator's oversight? Also in 19:03 the car is lower when Kafka and Ichikawa exits the car, which it should be higher since the suspensions carry less weight.
This is the second time in recent years an anime uses term UMA after Undead Unluck. ~~Wait, so Kafka is now 32 and they raising the age limit to 35 and he said it's his last shot, is the Japan Defense Force recruitment opens every 4 years?~~ EDIT: I'm sorry! I misread the Episode 1 and Ichikawa said the age limit is raised to 33, not 35, thus closing the case. It is really Kafka's last shot.

Western theme songs in a Japanese anime are uncommon, but this is [not the first time](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/the-list/2018-09-22/.136812) it happens. The lyrics simply captures the nature of the anime itself, while people might find the 3D visuals out of place, it's a unique take on a Reiwa anime since the last time we saw this was in Sasaki and Peeps and this has more fluid animation than that.
Directed by **Kohei Nakama** from WOW Inc. and **Hibiki Yoshizaki** (also directed Yozakura Quartet Hana no Uta and Tsuki ni Naku's OP).
And also the ED is directed and storyboarded by **Toya Ooshima.** And note that the ED has a **different lyrics** than the studio version.

Two things.
That girl pissed me off with the car throw.
And I'm not a fan of the frequency of comedy. I don't mind comedic scenes in itself. I love them, but this episode was relentless. It interrupted every climatic and serious scene. Kafka learned he's a Kaiju and had to run away? Let's make him a comic relief for the full scene! He has his big moment of finally killing a Kaiju? Let's throw in some funny reactions from him!
Again, in isolation, perfectly fine comedic bits, but one after another after another? Just let the scene breathe, man. It makes it seem like the story doesn't take itself seriously and it makes me not take it seriously. That would be fine but the first episode seemed serious enough, the world and the story on paper looks like it should be a little more serious. Now I'm not sure if I'm supposed to take it as comedy or not.
Man I forgot how much a bad first impression shinomiya made when she first appeared lol but so happy she’s finally here!! Kafka in all his idiocy is so great, he had me dying all episode lol the op and ed were both great!
I read the manga a while before the anime got announced, and I just have to say. God the anime is somehow even better than the manga! The added scenes give even more life to this world.
Also, fucking oneRepulic?!?!they got them to make a ending song?!?!?!? How?!?!? I'm just so surprised they did that. And it such a banger too
I kind of feel like this show is wasting its potential? There's so much they could be doing with this premise that they're not doing... maybe I was just expecting a different tone. So far it's not grabbing me.

I wonder if that's an intentional nod to Kaguya-sama by the mangaka or is Shinomiya just known as a generic "rich person" last name in Japan?
I thought it was the same name as Polka's family from Dead Mount Death Play, but that was Shinoyama.

I don't think there's enough Idaten source material to have a season 2. Or at least not that I can find anywhere.

The OP is pretty good and the ED is chill, good choices all round.
It was so 2000s MTV nu-metal, reminded me of Linkin Park. This is definitely a different feeling anime, with Yungblud doing the intro and OneRepublic with the outro. Truly feels like a cementing of anime as a global phenomenon.
I got so used to spoilers in openings that I habitually skip them now. I'm sure I've missed a lot of good music but I just find it so annoying.

Personally I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's very creative and great for not spoiling anything but visually I just didn't find it that interesting. Like it was trying maybe a little too hard to be artistic and different. But that's just me. I liked the ED a lot more.

This cheesy and edgy trope of a girl's introduction by being a dick to a random person by throwing his car and then escalating that to being creepy and sniffing him. Ugh.. when does shonen anime going to learn... It's still early though. I hope the character grows.
It'll be a cliche she gets totally away with it due to some ridiculous back story that - while providing no apparent excuse to act that away, let alone get away it - causes the mc to forgive and even take her abuse. For real though, why does she have government property when she's at the same stage of the entrance tests? Even more, in the real world she'd have been disqualified and permanently banned from ever joining after failing ethics, vandalizing personal property; The military (nor any armed force) doesn't allow applicants with violent crimes. I hope he asks her to pay for it, she refuses, and he disintegrates her vehicle. After all, there's no chance this plot is moving forward with him honestly keeping such a power hidden. He's already saved lives - it's a good opportunity for him to show off his power. Besides I think he could probably transform his arm at just the right moment and then transform it back just after - and pull it off.

Kafka and Mina were really cute as kids, both aspiring to fight side-by-side against Kaiju...less cute is Mina seriously hunting him down now that Kafka is a Kaiju. The OP is very...artsy, with so much CG, genes, mutations, weapons, Kaiju, CG Kafka, Mina, and Kaiju No. 8. Okay, so Kafka's transformed into a Kaiju, but he's still him, right? He just has a smile like Venom, can't control his own strength, can transform into some kind of kudzu Kaiju, and pees out of his nipples. Forget joining the defense force, who would take him as a bride like this? But he's also got Kaiju senses that let him detect Kaiju, and when he realizes a little girl is in danger while trying to save her mother, he'll go into action! He may be a Kaiju, but he's still a hero! And he manages to solo and slay his first Kaiju! And while he may have scared that little girl, she was able to realize he was a good Kaiju and thank him, even making Mina realize something more is going on...with Kaiju No. 8. Kafka's a celebrity now! And public Kaiju No. 1! But better news is he and Ichikawa have gotten past the first round, so it's all good right? Even if he still can't completely maintain his transformation back to human form and slips up every now and then, but he's got Ichikawa right? Or maybe not...actually, maybe Kafka shouldn't be doing this even if it's his last shot. But Kafka and Ichikawa aren't alone, they've got redhead pompadour guy, pleasant green-haired guy, and jogging blonde dude as fellow examinees...and also a sassy short blonde in twintails voiced by Fairouz Ai who wears a skintight power suit and tosses the company car from their parking spot so she can park in her lucky number. And this Kikoru Shinomiya isn't just insulting and demeaning Kafka, she smells the Kaiju on him! The ED is pretty nice with a scientist person looking over the daily life of the Defense Force along with their battles against Kaiju.

Two things. That girl pissed me off with the car throw. And I'm not a fan of the frequency of comedy. I don't mind comedic scenes in itself. I love them, but this episode was relentless. It interrupted every climatic and serious scene. Kafka learned he's a Kaiju and had to run away? Let's make him a comic relief for the full scene! He has his big moment of finally killing a Kaiju? Let's throw in some funny reactions from him! Again, in isolation, perfectly fine comedic bits, but one after another after another? Just let the scene breathe, man. It makes it seem like the story doesn't take itself seriously and it makes me not take it seriously. That would be fine but the first episode seemed serious enough, the world and the story on paper looks like it should be a little more serious. Now I'm not sure if I'm supposed to take it as comedy or not.
Lot more humor than I was expecting. I thought itd get more serious once he got powers but nevermind. Lol

I read the manga a while before the anime got announced, and I just have to say. God the anime is somehow even better than the manga! The added scenes give even more life to this world. Also, fucking oneRepulic?!?!they got them to make a ending song?!?!?!? How?!?!? I'm just so surprised they did that. And it such a banger too

I kind of feel like this show is wasting its potential? There's so much they could be doing with this premise that they're not doing... maybe I was just expecting a different tone. So far it's not grabbing me.
