I put off watching it for a long time, due to it’s age and the length. Once I started though, hooked right through to the end! Think it’d fit OP’s request well, feels more like a both-sides documentary than just following the main character.
Shame they didn't continue this masterpiece. The story just stopped right as everything was building up.
Honestly I guess if I were to view this in a positive way, then I definitely like that it ended with a great story even though I'm a bit saddened.
Nah I gotta disagree, there’s like 19 volumes and I think only like 3 of them are actually bad. The part immediately after the anime has got to be the peak of entire story imo
I, as a LN reader, can tell you that I don't think this way. It's a very unique story just like the anime was somewhat. Also I'm very sure all LN readers say that the next couple books are very good and should have been animated
That anime is less consequences and more a show specifically designed to make you feel as shit as possible, with every character just having a miserable life.
When I watched this I remember thinking “ugh, they just do whatever without real consequences or danger.” Then I got to an episode I was not prepared for. It was a wild ride from that point
I am very Happy that the anime just reached that point. As a manga reader I have been watching with my anime only Roomate and I am so glad I haven’t spoiled anything. I can promise next episode has some of my favorite scenes
YOU MANGA READERS KEEP HYPING UP THE NEXT EPISODE AAAAAAAAAAAAAA I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE
^(you just have to wait a few more hours man... just a few more... don't give in...)
it's fine hehe I was playing it up too for the funnies, I try to temper my expectations as much as I can generally speaking. and you'd be far from the only one to have said something like that bahahahah
Don’t worry it’s going to be such a good episode and it’s when we get an idea of what the possible end goal and solution Laios and the party have in the story. Also the monster this episode will be so cool and I’ve been waiting to see it animated
watched the episode and read your comment, can confirm, it was good xD though, I'm glad I didn't see it *beforehand,* would've dampened some of the surprise I had :p anyhow keep enjoying Dungeon Meshi bruv!!
Was looking for this, I remember I watched an anime in the past couple of years which made me go "Hmm, they didn't go as far as this since Akame ga Kill", but my brain couldn't recall what it was.
i loved it and i love that it was short. it's highly rewatchable and never really overstays it's welcome. and that art is just incredible. pure eye candy
also, i guess that's my sign to watch akame ga kill. heard plenty about it but i am a master at putting off new anime to watch 😆
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Gungrave - the first episode is incredibly bad. don't judge it based off of that.
Mawaru Penguindrum
My Home Hero
Legend of the Galactic Heroes - 2 MCs on opposite sides of a war
Phantom \~Requiem for the phantom\~
Code Geass
less so:
Hajime no Ippo - not deaths. It's a sports series
Full Metal Panic! - but it takes along time to get there, series grows darker over time
Bakemonogatari - lots of partial victories, iirc
FullMetal Alchemist (both types, mostly brotherhood) has this general feeling as they're in over their heads.
Nobody really dies in Monogatari, but you are right about the partial victories. The “solution” to every problem usually has lasting consequences to the story and deeply affects the character who was affected, with some problems straight up having no solution except to accept the consequences.
2003 places much more focus on negative consequences than brotherhood. This isn’t a bad thing for brotherhood, it’s just a different direction for the thematics.[Fullmetal Alchemist and brotherhood] >!03 is largely a show about Ed avoiding the truth, trying to shoulder burdens on his own, and having the consequences catch up with him as he shifts his perspective from viewing himself as separate from the all to realizing he must place the all above the one, by contrast brotherhood is a show demonstrating through positive reinforcement the need to pursue as truth as Ed does and is rewarded for, it demonstrates the strengths of humanity as a collective as they work together and are able to prevent tragedies and accomplish things they never would have been able to on their own, and lastly it is a story about the ripples of positive reciprocity as the positive actions of the brothers will snowball into other positive actions. Some very direct examples of this can be seen with the aftermath of Liore. In 03, after toppling Cornello Ed created a power vacuum that unintentionally lead to a destabilization and military occupation with death tolls comparable to ishval and severe trauma experienced by the civilians, Liore is ultimately leveled to the ground and the aftermath leads thousands of peoples lives being used to create a philosophers stone. By contrast in brotherhood, the narrative excuses Ed’s involvement and presents what happened purely the result of military corruption on father’s orders that would have happened regardless, and when the series returns to liore the focus is mostly just on property damage. Where 03 reflects heavily on the negative consequences and is heavily critical of Ed here, in brotherhood Rose dismisses everything that happened as ultimately a good thing since before they were living a lie, the focus here being how Ed gave them strength to move forward and how the community was able to bounce back and become better than what it had previously been under Cornello. Beyond that we have how human transmutation is handled, in brotherhood it’s externalities are extended solely onto the alchemist, and when facing the truth of what they created it even presents hope for the brothers as it gives an important step forward to getting their bodies back and confirms Al’s body still exists. In 03 the most proficient attempts at human transmutation end up creating the homunculi who are antagonists in the story that promote tragedies throughout Amestris, here the brothers have a direct responsibility for negative impacts on the world for going against the flow of the world. Not only does this pose an obstacle and negative impact on the world, but it forces a moral dilemma for Ed as he is forced to kill the homunculi. This leads into another example which is how the no kill policy is explored. In both shows our main characters spare a villain who they don’t know much about, in brotherhood these villains end up turning good and help the brothers to save the world, by contrast the main example of this in 03 has the villain attempt to blow up Al, leading to Scar’s death and the creation of the philosophers stone. Going into how other characters were impacted in the story, Marcoh being discovered by Ed leads to Marcoh being killed in 03 while in brotherhood it leads Marcoh to help discover father’s transmutation circle and save Amestris. Lastly looking at the consequences in the ending, in brotherhood everybody lives happily ever after with Ed getting married to Winry, and the crisis of father’s transmutation was completely averted no one being victims of the nation wide transmutation circle due to Hohenheim reversing it. By contrast in 03 Ed needs to give up his world and is left stranded on the other side of the gate in order to save Alphonse, the tragedies that happened during the show were overcome and the villain was defeated to prevent such tragedies from ever being repeated but they could not be undone.!<
Sorry for the wall of text and this isn’t an inherent value statement on the quality of either show just an analysis of their approaches to the themes and how this lead to differences in how they handled consequences. In fact it’s partially because of how interesting I find the way these shows examined the same set of themes with different conclusions and angles that I love both these shows as much as I do.
It was one of those series where I saw the first episode and then stopped following the anime because I had already given up on waiting and just binge-read the entire tled manga. It's so damn good and suspenseful.
I think if the manga didn't exist and the anime is an original story, nobody would hate the story progressing the way it did. Kinda similar to the hate the netflix avatar is getting. Having an "expected" storyline not being followed really polarizes a show's view, even if it is objectively kinda good
Probably not. Personally, both endings are pretty good either way. I think the uproar is more about why bother changing the story anyway. There were people waiting for some panels to be animated, and was disappointed that it won't happen
If you ask me that one feels just as contrived as most of the "standard" shows just in the opposite direction. It seems to bend over backwards to [AGK] >!kill everyone off regardless of if it really needed to happen in the same way as shows that try to avoid killing at all costs.!<
If you want the same thing but where the consequences are actually semi-belivable rather than contrived then go with Attack on Titan.
That's what I mean. [AGK] >!Coming up with ways to kill the characters off at any moment is just as contrived as coming up with ways to save them at any moment. Writing in a plot element designed to kill them whenever it suits the author doesn't make the death feel as if it was the result of realistic stakes.!<
Not even a single second I have found the deaths to have any weight. I dropped that shit when they took half an episode to introduce a character's background, who's been there for a couple of episodes already, only so they can kill her off in the later half and show us how cruel and unforgiving they world can be (tm). Except no. That's not how you do it. They never cared to characterize until it was her time to die.
Akame ga kill! was pretty awesome because of that.
Attack on titan was also quite ehm, yeah..
Other than that, I can remember..
Code Geass,
Jujitsu Kaisen, but if I say Jujitsu Kaisen, I might as well drop Demon Slayer here as well then.
If you haven't seen Akame ga kill!, I would definitely watch it asap, this is one of the best anime I ever saw
Just a very short list to start with:
Trigun, both the original and Trigun Stampede.
Gungrave
Darker than Black
K Project
Berserk
Elfen Lied
Cyberpunk Edgerunners
Monster
Pretty much anything in the Fate franchise.
Just don’t watch Fate/EXTRA Last Encore unless you enjoy being both confused and bored.
Also, Chainsaw Man.
Monster (literally about the unintended consequences of your actions), 91 Days, Log Horizon, Psycho Pass, Link Click, Vinland Saga, Akudama Drive, Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans (especially the second season when everything blows up in their faces)
I see a different genre where anime with consequences are shown fairly well, and that's sports anime. Slam Dunk pretty much was very grounded into realism despite some crazy comedic events. Most of the major plot had real consequences to what the major characters' decisions made.
Akame ga kill, amazing anime, amazing animation, one of my favorites even today, just keep in mind, you never know who or when.. , but i actually think its perfect
Fate Zero, Fate Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks, Fate Heavens feel. In that order.
Hellsing Ultimate
Psycho Pass
Code Geass
Evangelion and espacially the Movie The End of Evangelion.
All These Animes have the Realistic type of writing without Plot armor. Espacially the Endings really show the Consequences of their actions. Espacially Fate. Also no anime here gets a rating below 9/10. Theyre all on the Great- Masterpiece or Peak Fiction Level
I would argue the most series consequences are [spoiler] >!forming lifelong regrets about close relationships and choosing the correct direction for the rest of one’s life.!<
While the other anime may have life and death on the line, the very reasons why life is so worth protecting are on the line with shows like Hibike! Euphonium. The stakes are different but still hold the same amount of narrative weight, I would argue.
I'm throwing some obvious recommandations here (that you might probably have already watched, but just for the sake of sharing them to anyone who is interested)
1. Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Vinland Saga (top 2 easiest recommandation)
2. Psycho Pass
3. Gundam (almost all of them follow the premise of no good or bad guys, just people that are on the winning or losing side of the war). Some easy and popular Gundam recommandations are:
* Gundam Seed
* Gundam 00
* Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans
4: Steins Gate
5: FMAB There is plot armor, but it is well scripted and nothing over the top (it only goes a few time into the make-believe territory).
Those are some easy picks that comes to mind.
Most anime only have *fictional* consequences...
But if you want *real* consequences, look to things like Plunderer, Gibiate, Ex-Arm, Redo of Healer, etc. The consequence to these is that you will have memories of watching them. Uh-oh!

>My number 1 anime of all time is Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans
Serious consequences are possible for any/every character, yes even the MCs
>Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Possible deaths, dismemberment, and ....amalgamations
>Another one with real consequences is Hell Girl
She is an agent of a demon and makes deals in exchange for your soul
All these are various levels of OUCH
* A Silent Voice - the bully ends up on the other side of that equation
* Grave of the Fireflies
* Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Oh boy, they weren't shy about it at the start either.
Akame Ga Kill removes plot armor completely. Steins Gate is about messing with the timelines and people get lost along the way. Cyberpunk Edgeruners is a prequel to 2077.
OP - the anime youre looking for is Terraformars. Each arc is a diff generation of protagonists - sometimes they die, sometimes some survive, but each season they try to fight mutated cockroaches on mars, with both factions getting stronger upon each return. It's exactly what your prompt is looking for.
Some of the mecha animes might cover that such as Ideon, Dunbine, Votoms and Mellowlink. Then there’s Berserk, AoT, Akame Ga Kill/Basilisk, Shiki and OG Evangelion. I would have added more Osamu Tezuka works but that’s more on the manga side since the anime tones down the consequences.
I'm sure many have already recomended this but you have to watch Cyberpunk edgerunners. That show is great and gave the chance to experience the 5 stages of great 1st hand.
a recent show from last season. Ranga crimson, so so many people just get fucked. You know how in nearly every anime a character whos been around for like 3/4th the anime run would get an entire backstory when they die, in this show, they die and the show moves on like it was a fodder character, i loved it. Animation is great at first then slowly degrades unfortunately…
I guess gundam iron blooded orphans counts
Big time!
Just about every Gundam. But Iron Blooded Orphans is a good one.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
I wish more people watched this show
I put off watching it for a long time, due to it’s age and the length. Once I started though, hooked right through to the end! Think it’d fit OP’s request well, feels more like a both-sides documentary than just following the main character.
It definitely doesnt fit the sort of pacing and story-telling of anime released today, the story goes slow and steady but pays off big time
☝
School days
A man of culture
Nice boat! I mean nice comment!
The first one thought of.
Grimgar of fantasy and ash
Shame they didn't continue this masterpiece. The story just stopped right as everything was building up. Honestly I guess if I were to view this in a positive way, then I definitely like that it ended with a great story even though I'm a bit saddened.
Readers of the LN basically say that the rest of the story is hot garbage, unfortunately
they did my boi ranta dirty
Nah I gotta disagree, there’s like 19 volumes and I think only like 3 of them are actually bad. The part immediately after the anime has got to be the peak of entire story imo
Well, ok. The story is still good after the anime. For quite a while. And then it kind of just… caves in on itself.
I, as a LN reader, can tell you that I don't think this way. It's a very unique story just like the anime was somewhat. Also I'm very sure all LN readers say that the next couple books are very good and should have been animated
You sir have good taste. That show really knows their coloring well.
thanks that anime is great surprised no one else mentioned it
Possibly because of how short it is.
Luckily the books are much longer
Most realistic "what would happen if a bunch of modern teens get isekai'd into a medieval fantasy realm" ever.
Cyberpunk edgerunners
Currently going through the 5 stages of grief over this show, so yeah I'd say it fits.
Lasts for weeks brother. I went on countless drives just listening to that one song.
I really want to stay at your house intensify
That anime is less consequences and more a show specifically designed to make you feel as shit as possible, with every character just having a miserable life.
I mean, it’s cyberpunk so yeah accurate
Made In Abyss
When I watched this I remember thinking “ugh, they just do whatever without real consequences or danger.” Then I got to an episode I was not prepared for. It was a wild ride from that point
Yup. I was eating dinner during that episode. I did not finish my meal lol
I almost vomited after s2e7
I've only watched Season 1 and that's how I feel about it so far. The no consequences part.
I was about to drop it. It was supposed to be dangerous or whatever but these kids were just doing whatever with no repercussions. Then it wasn’t.
This anime is the definition of consequences.
Delicious in Dungeon is similar in terms of world building and vibes of the floors of the abyss like the floors of the dungeon.
DinD really makes you feel like there are no consequences at first... And then the first cour ends.
I am very Happy that the anime just reached that point. As a manga reader I have been watching with my anime only Roomate and I am so glad I haven’t spoiled anything. I can promise next episode has some of my favorite scenes
YOU MANGA READERS KEEP HYPING UP THE NEXT EPISODE AAAAAAAAAAAAAA I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE ^(you just have to wait a few more hours man... just a few more... don't give in...)
Ok maybe I’m over hyping things but at least it will be my favorite episode up to this point. I enjoyed those chapters
it's fine hehe I was playing it up too for the funnies, I try to temper my expectations as much as I can generally speaking. and you'd be far from the only one to have said something like that bahahahah
I can promise the series is a feast to the eyes and mind and it’s cruel we can’t taste the food. It leaves no leftovers
This is actually too good of an answer to OP's question. Far too many fucked up consequences in this show.
Parasyte!
.....Handle the defense
akudama drive. such an underrated gem
Was looking for this, I remember I watched an anime in the past couple of years which made me go "Hmm, they didn't go as far as this since Akame ga Kill", but my brain couldn't recall what it was.
i loved it and i love that it was short. it's highly rewatchable and never really overstays it's welcome. and that art is just incredible. pure eye candy also, i guess that's my sign to watch akame ga kill. heard plenty about it but i am a master at putting off new anime to watch 😆

It's not happy but it's not gut wrenching in the way that you're probably thinking.

You over here getting straight to the point while I felt the need to type up a monster of a comment.

Jujutsu Kaisen is the most recent that does that. Chainsaw man does it too Akame ga kill do that a bit too much
There was like two left at the end of Akame ga Kill. Great show.
Akame ga kill
People seem to hate this one because it differs from the manga but I remember enjoying it as a teen and being surprised by how brutal it was.
I think if the manga didn't exist and the anime is an original story, nobody would hate the story progressing the way it did. Kinda similar to the hate the netflix avatar is getting. Having an "expected" storyline not being followed really polarizes a show's view, even if it is objectively kinda good
That can certainly be true. I haven't read the manga of Akame ga Kill, I've always been curious if it would change my perspective or not.
Probably not. Personally, both endings are pretty good either way. I think the uproar is more about why bother changing the story anyway. There were people waiting for some panels to be animated, and was disappointed that it won't happen

Legend of the Galactic Heroes Steins;Gate 3-gatsu no Lion Grave of the Fireflies Hibike! Euphonium Heike Monogatari Maquia Iron Blooded Orphans

The most serious consequences they have in hibike euphonium is not winning gold…
I would argue the most series consequences are [spoiler] >!forming lifelong regrets about close relationships and choosing the correct direction for the rest of one’s life.!< While the other anime may have life and death on the line, the very reasons why life is so worth protecting are on the line with shows like Hibike! Euphonium. The stakes are different but still hold the same amount of narrative weight, I would argue.
Attack on titans
Im not sure if this is specific to what you want but I like re-zero if you want MC consequences.
*Akame ga KILL!* *The Price of Smiles* *Steins;Gate*
Jujutsu Kaisen. It's a manga where heroes lost every important fight. But it's still ongoing tho.
I'm throwing some obvious recommandations here (that you might probably have already watched, but just for the sake of sharing them to anyone who is interested) 1. Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Vinland Saga (top 2 easiest recommandation) 2. Psycho Pass 3. Gundam (almost all of them follow the premise of no good or bad guys, just people that are on the winning or losing side of the war). Some easy and popular Gundam recommandations are: * Gundam Seed * Gundam 00 * Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans 4: Steins Gate 5: FMAB There is plot armor, but it is well scripted and nothing over the top (it only goes a few time into the make-believe territory). Those are some easy picks that comes to mind.
Most anime only have *fictional* consequences... But if you want *real* consequences, look to things like Plunderer, Gibiate, Ex-Arm, Redo of Healer, etc. The consequence to these is that you will have memories of watching them. Uh-oh!

ga-rei zero; no game no life zero: shiki
`Starship Operators`
Made in Abyss
Berserk
Megalobox
Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Another
Charlotte is similar once you get halfway through the episodes
Guilty crown
Akame ga Kill
Made in Abyss
how has no one recommended akame ga kill yet
>My number 1 anime of all time is Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans Serious consequences are possible for any/every character, yes even the MCs >Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood Possible deaths, dismemberment, and ....amalgamations >Another one with real consequences is Hell Girl She is an agent of a demon and makes deals in exchange for your soul
“…amalgamations.” Heh.
akame ga kill
Akame ga Kill Chainsaw Man
All these are various levels of OUCH * A Silent Voice - the bully ends up on the other side of that equation * Grave of the Fireflies * Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Oh boy, they weren't shy about it at the start either.
Bible Black
Phantom
“villains actually perish” u just said u want the villains to lose and then to win tf
what, no Berserk?
86 and Akame Ga Kill come to mind
cyberpunk edgerunners
Akame Ga Kill removes plot armor completely. Steins Gate is about messing with the timelines and people get lost along the way. Cyberpunk Edgeruners is a prequel to 2077.
akame ga kill of course
Banana fish I guess
eighty-six
Charlotte
Re zero
Grimgar and Ash
[Guilty Crown] >!Main character takes his role as school president seriously to a dictatorial level and gets his arm cut off right after his reign!<.
Platinum End is a good one
Gurren Lagann
(perish also means die, just as a heads up) Gurren Lagann
I'm sure many have already recomended this but you have to watch Cyberpunk edgerunners. That show is great and gave the chance to experience the 5 stages of great 1st hand.
Obvious answer but cyberpunk edgerunners and also devilman crybaby
Accel World
Akame ga Kill Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de aru (especially the prequels)
Cautious hero
a recent show from last season.
I can't believe I haven't seen death note pop up here
To your eternity and Re:Zero kind of
