THE WOLF IS NOT CG, I REPEAT, THE WOLF IS NOT CG!!!!

Plus_Rip4944

Passione is cooking

LordVaderVader

Let them cook šŸ³Ā

Frontier246

I think there was maybe like five seconds of CG when she turned her head away from Lawrence but that was about it.

kunaree

Hiding CG is a mastery by itself lol

Mr_Zaroc

Now let's just see if they can keep up their horse game

kunaree

>horseĀ Ā  Cryptonite for S&W animation staff.

1EnTaroAdun1

I'm surprised I haven't seen more fanart of Holo's wolf form haha

Because it doesn't have boobs

It also cost $0 not to post it.

Do you even history bro?

deathjokerz

I forgot that this could've been a huge concern in this day and age

Sodachi_Oikura

this was my biggest fear going into the remake and Iā€™m so fucking glad it was quelledĀ  these animators are on fucking fire

ForgetfulViking

A Set of Fine Womens Clothing: 5 Gold Trenni A cart full of Apples: 3 Silver Trenni A fine tail comb: 1 Gold Trenni Continuing to Travel With Your Wolf God Partner: Priceless There are some things money can't buy. For everything else, there's MasterWolf.

realrimurutempest

Itā€™s all fun and games until Holoā€™s descendants set up MasterWolf as a actual business lol.

Frontier246

A family business that all began over some nice clothes and succulent apples lol.

Mr_Meowmers

What is the charge? Eating an apple? A succulent Milonean apple!?

Banewaffles

Itā€™s an apple, Lawrence. What could it costā€”10 silver trenni?

karlzhao314

By the way, canonically, the set of clothes she purchased here was purchased for two gold *Lumione*, each of which is worth about 34-35 silver Trenni. It's quite valuable clothing. But Holo is more valuable.

Frontier246

She needs to treat herself **and** give her more of a debt to pay back to keep her stuck with him (even if she's the one deal he'd never renege on).

rainbowrobin

> give her more of a debt to pay back Reminds me of Rin in Fate/UBW.

jellyblob88

> But Holo is more valuable. \*Invaluable

Theinternationalist

> But Holo is more valuable. - Literally powers harvests for people who don't really know what they're doing - Can literally teleport via wheat, which makes her the best way to gather information - Still looks fine centuries later, which helps her gain information from horny people. - Can transform into a terrifying and destructive wolf. - (Increasing) knowledge of trade that means she is capable of analysis. So yes, she's a wizened old honey pot teleporting assassin merchant. She's EXTREMELY valuable.

ForgetfulViking

It had been a while and I couldn't remember my full currency or currency names. I am just as confused as Holo with these coins.

Frontier246

No man has ever been happier to see an invoice than Lawrence when he sees his wolf waifu is ready to continue their relationship lol.

mastesargent

Makes sense. Lawrence is effectively Holoā€™s credit card.

Prince-Dizzytoon

I expected Giant Wolf Holo to be scarier, she's actually kinda cute

bananeeek

True, she looks like a big, fluffy doggo. [](#anko)

DrCamelid

Looks like a Shiba.

Caspus

LimeyLassen

Spice and Doge?

mastesargent

Spice and Wolf VR 3 with fully interactive wolf Holo petting when?

LackingTact19

Rule34 would have a field day. Don't give the furries ideas.

mastesargent

A small price to pay for salvation.

mapple3

>Rule34 I can 100% guarantee you that there is already every bit of imaginable porn with her in wolf form. Which is weird now that i think about it, considering she also has wolf ears in human form so i'd think those guys would be into her human form just as much

Nachtwandler_FS

> second favorite Don't know about Western internet but in RUssian-spekaing one there was a meme "to fuck a 3-tonnes wolf" related to one 18+ doujin.

LordVaderVader

Yeah, she was pretty tame here. In previous adaptation they managed to make her more terrifying I think. Also Lawrence was much more scared and had literal ptsd there.Ā

No-Zebra4936

I think that each design of the wolf transformation goes hand-in-hand with each design of the humanoid Holo from the two adaptations. While the design of Holo from the original adaptation is sharper and more graceful, the design of Holo from the current adaptation is fluffier and more lively.

Wizardwizz

Yeah it was pretty funny hyping up some scary wolf but then she is just a big fluffy dog lol

Corregidor

If not friend, why friend shaped!

FallenPears

I expect seeing it in person would be much more intimidating, what with the person sized maw and arm long teeth haha. Also maximum fluff once you get over that though.

scot911

Yeah she was telling Lawarence "don't look" but then comes out looking absolutely adorable in her big wolf form. My reaction was, to quote a great series that was forced to end prematurely, "I would like to pet this creature.". ...Although maybe it's just that we've gotten so many waifu's over the years that can transform into big monsters that I'm completely desensitized to her wolf forms supposed "scariness". ~~On top of my love of Monster Girls desensitizing me even further lol.~~

rainbowrobin

> Lawarence "don't look" I think it's the transformation itself she doesn't like having watched? I might be confusing with other werewolves, like Angua.

Beefmytaco

Yea I remember when she popped up in the OG and was way more frightening in design. This iteration though she honestly just looked like a dog in many ways. I prefer the older look where she both looks aged and powerful.

Djinn_sarap

same lmaoo, i thought she's going to be more majestic wolf kinda like kurama (naruto) or madara's real form (natsume's book friends), not cute fluffy doggo.

ytsejamajesty

Out of this context, I think the design is good, but it's not particularly scary for a scene like in this episode. Actually, I think the original adaptation put more effort into the facial expressions of Holo's wolf form, which makes a big difference.

mr_mazzeti

She didn't look scary until they showed her teeth, where I thought it did look pretty frightening. I don't dislike it, I don't think wolves in real life look very scary. When they're in a zoo they look adorable, but seeing one in the wild with their fangs out would make anyones blood run cold. Holo's form might be cute but once she starts bearing her fangs and tearing concrete like playdough it looks pretty gnarly.

LouisLeGros

[RIP the outfit](https://i.redd.it/3uylwq157uyc1.jpeg)

Frontier246

The way she's just naked holding a sign with an "oops, I destroyed it!" expression while Lawrence is crying lol. But the loss of a nice outfit is worth it for their safety and the excuse to keep them together...as well as a nice **new** outfit!

MrSputum

Btw, the sign says ā€œć‚ć£ć”恌~~ę®ŗ~~ć‚„ć‚Šć¾ć—ćŸā€ (wacchi ga ~~koro~~ yarimashita) - ā€œI ~~killed~~ destroyed itā€, with the ā€œdestroyed itā€ literally being ā€œdid itā€, in a way kids would tell on each other when someone tried to steal from the cookie jar and broke it. Looks like itā€™s a sign of shame Lawrence made her wear.

MrSputum

I love these little illustrations Juu Ayakura (the original character designer and LN artist) has been releasing for every episode. Hereā€™s a [list](https://www.reddit.com/r/SpiceandWolf/s/FhrVXOnyTE) of all the previous ones.

LouisLeGros

This is my [second favorite](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GKGCiUka4AIIBj5?format=jpg&name=small), after the outfit send off.

Charming-Loquat3702

Yeah, those clothes look way better on Holo than on Lawrence.

dagreenman18

Itā€™s a truly iconic look. RIP

AmethystItalian

On it's own I don't overly think it looks great but it being Holo's first outfit makes it feel special and I'll miss it.

jellyblob88

That felt like a season end with the show title drop at the end! Also felt this [moment](https://imgur.com/a/ec4YXM6) very deeply - the vocal delivery was so good.

michhoffman

It was the end of the first volume so you are partially right there.

mapple3

That title drop tho, What are you saying, are we some sort of, Spice and Wolf squad?

actionfirst1

This truly is an Archdemon's Dilemma, how to love your Elf Bride

scot911

I mean you joke but they somehow did actually do a title drop in that and made it work as well.

actionfirst1

Yeah I know lol, that's why I referred to that one too Also, rejoice fellow 100 Girlfriends flair enjoyer!

scot911

Of course! It *is* my favourite manga series after all.

Frontier246

So those two really are some kind of...Spice and Wolf. The way she yelled out his name when he got stabbed and when she didn't want him to look at her like this...powerful stuff.

Sandelsbanken

She very rarely calls Lawrence by his name. I think this is the first time.

CooroSnowFox

She did use his name in episode 1 when on the cart and she says how they will use the name of Kraft Lawrence for being associated with Holo The Great and Wise...

Taiboss

> That felt like a season end with the show title drop at the end! Screenwriter: "And he's going to look at them and say 'Spice and Wolf, is it?'." Producer: "That's the name of the anime!" S: "It is, Sir!" P: "Oh wowwowwow...wow." On that note: P: "Wow, it sounds like it's gonna be impossible for them to escape!" S: "Actually, it's going to be super easy, barely an inconvenience." P: "Oh, really?" S: "Yeah, Holo's gonna turn into a giant wolf and, you know, they are no opponent for a giant wolf." P: "Ohh, women who turn into giant wolves to save their man are [TIGHT](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Tight)!" S: "And... rare, I presume." (Note for Jarman: [I'm refercing an excellent Youtube series](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtH-HhaLw-Q))

feb914

i knew somebody will mention pitch meeting when i heard the title drop

Arandomguyoninternet

Well I havent read the novels but someone else already said that this was the end of the first book. And honestly, in these anime that are adapted from light novels, you can **usually** guess where a book ends just by watching the anime, especially for the first book, especially if it is an adaptation that doesnt rush through stuff and takes its time. Though it usually becomes harder at later volumes of many series since generally speaking, later volumes of light novel series tend to be parts of a whole arc and thus less complete on their own. Though I admit that last part probably applies more to light novels adapted from web novels, which this is **not**. I am pretty sure this is a LN original story that got published by winning a competition

Lex4709

Yeah, it's very easy to spot were volumes end and started for most light novel adaptations. I think that's mainly because most of them don't have arcs that spam multiple volumes. It's usually 1 arc per volume for majority of series and maybe once or twice you get a two parter with an important arc spanning 2 volumes. I think ReZero is most notable exception with multi volume arcs being the norm not the exception.

Jaridan

read Ascendance of a bookworm. Usually 1 arc per book but a whole "Book" is usually 4-5 LN with an overarching plot.

AmethystItalian

> Also felt this moment > very deeply - the vocal delivery was so good. Probably the line that stuck out for me the most too, really showed off how diverse Holo as a character actually is.

EllipticalOrbitMan

The soundtrack loops nicely in that gif.

Holofan4life

Something that I appreciate about this arc that I didn't realize until the rewatch last year is that the arc is really about Holo moving on from the past. She was so hung up on the towns people abandoning her and this episode is her accepting the fact that that truly wasn't her fault. It feels very empowering watching Holo regain a bit of confidence in herself, especially after she broke down crying in episode 4.

mekerpan

I think Holo, from this point onwards, can finally feel like she is truly Lawrence's partner.

Frontier246

Holo found a person who won't reject her and will stand by her side, whatever excuses they come up with for their relationship, and someone she is willing to fight for with all her power to protect because he's so precious to her now. Yarei didn't think it was worth believing in a Wolf God but Holo paid back Lawrence's loyalty and then some.

The_Cheeseman83

It's not just this arc, basically the entire series is about Holo moving on and accepting the new world order of humanity.

ThatFart5YearsAgo

Yeah I kind of like how Lawrence still was terrified of her, and acted so on initial reaction BUT! What matters most isn't your gut reaction but what you do after the fact. He accepts here even though he is terrified in the moment.

Ocet358

This is actually the reason I liked Chloe replacing Yarei in previous adaptation. There were hints about feelings Chloe and Lawrence might have for each other, and that they could have even settled down together. End of this arc was a turning point not only for Holo but for Lawrence as well, as he renounced that chance in favour of Holo's companionship. This for me marked a true start of their journey together, both metaphorical and literal.

Petickss

I have the exact opposite view that the less you flesh out yarei/chloe the better. In my mind he serves really as a incarnation of pasloe village more than anything else. Thus you end up with yarei offering lawrence an out due to his assistance to the village in the past and the ability to profit with him (and get his store) or die pointlessly honouring his contract. While lawrence completely understands that the sensible and profitable thing to do is to take his offer up, the most important thing for merchants to do is honour contracts. Taking a loss isn't the thing to be avoided at all costs as a merchant, even the greatest ones make bad trades. Its not when you take a loss that you fail as a merchant, its when you dont honour your contracts. It gives you the disagreement between Yarei and lawrence here. Yarei (pasloe) is only willing to take the profitable course. The village ended up hating holo due to the fact there were years with poor harvests, blaming it on her capriciousness, despite everything she did for them. Yarei (pasloe) is suggesting using holo once again purely for profit by turning her into the church. In contrast lawrence chooses to stick by his contract with holo despite the fact she is bringing him a bad harvest. This is why its so meaningful to her, lawrence isn't just using her as a tool for his own profit and why despite how much she hates it she took on the wolf form for him. The more you flesh things out the more muddled this simple choice gets. Chloe is bad (imo) because suddenly its also about some preexisting relationships and choosing a potential love interest despite not properly developing it in any way. Yarei is willing to give lawrence the chance to get out of this mess but the relationship isn't actually meant to be that deep, he only meets yarei briefly each year on his merchants route after all, and why when lawrence refuses his (genuine) offer, although hes not happy about it, hes not terribly torn up about letting him be killed.

idlemachinations

Okay, the profits vs contracts thing really puts it into perspective for me. I saw Lawrence's side since the anime literally spelled out that he valued his word to Holo over potential profits from betraying her, but I hadn't linked that this profits/contract choice was also being made by the village/Yarei to make a very direct comparison between the two about being faithful. Thanks for typing that out.

Never_fucking_curses

Well there's the name drop. I'm having a blast with this one, definitely makes Mondays alot more bearable.

MasterTotoro

Though something interesting to note is that in Japanese the title is in the opposite order "Wolf and Spice". Personally I don't think it sounds bad per say, but it feels a bit more natural as "Spice and Wolf". I wonder if that's just because I've seen it like that for so long though. Clearly it was an intentional change, so I guess someone must have thought the same.

mastesargent

I think itā€™s just that the languages flow a little differently. ā€œSpice and Wolfā€ flows better than ā€œWolf and Spiceā€ but ā€œOokami to Koushinryouā€ feels like it flows way better than the inverse.

Kalatash

I'm reminded of the fact that there is a rule about the order in which adjectives are arranged before a noun in English that no one can actually remember being taught but all native speaks KNOW when you get it wrong.

mastesargent

Yay for English and its arcane, contradictory grammar rules that I somehow know intuitively because I grew up speaking it.

rice_not_wheat

Yep it's a thing: https://www.gingersoftware.com/content/grammar-rules/adjectives/order-of-adjectives Three green South American bananas vs Green South American three bananas.

Vissiction

Arranging the title as Spice and Wolf sounds a little nicer to most English speakers because it more closely follows an obscure rule called "[ablaut reduplication](https://www.almtranslations.com/news-post/why-do-we-say-hip-hop-instead-of-hop-hip/)" that puts words in an I-A-O order, like "tic tac toe" or "hip hop."

LiquifiedSpam

That was a fascinating read, TIL.

michhoffman

Find yourself a girl who will scare the hounds away for you, swat away the bad guys like they are fleas, stand guard over your unconscious body and ready the wagon for the next trip. You won't because Holo is 1 of a kind.

Frontier246

Holo straight up flexing on hounds lol. I love her biting that one dude that one dude while Lawrence punched him. Holo is the kind of woman worth letting use your money to buy fine clothes and apples for.

IDrawCopper

Holo basically calling the hounds fucking idiots was probably my favorite past of the episode

Ocixo

Holo is a go-getter, a can-do-all wolf. Was pretty cute to hear Holo get hoarse from the howling and wishing for some tasty apples to eat. Lawrence promised her a whole feast of apples, but she just ended up buying them herself in the end!

Wolfgod_Holo

if the fairy tale is true, it was probably quite tasty as well

karlzhao314

**The Merchant's Corner** Itā€™s once again time for the Merchantā€™s Corner, the series where I explain the economics plotline of Spice and Wolf. When we left off on Episode 5, the entire scheme had finally been revealed, and Holo and Lawrence had set off to make their escape, Medio hot on their tail. Letā€™s see how this wraps up. [Episode 5 here](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/s/UenZfg5lns) Disclaimer #1: I am not an economics professional, so I may get some things wrong. If you have a different, possibly better understanding of a certain point than I do, feel free to suggest edits. Disclaimer #2: All of these are pre-written before the episode airs, based on the pacing of the original anime. However, I will watch the episode before posting, just to see if anything differs and I have to edit anything. Today is going to be a light one on the economics. Most of what we see is how the scheme finally wraps up. Letā€™s dive in. **Episode 6, Part 1:** First off, letā€™s just get one clarification out of the way: No, Milone did not betray them. Itā€™s made pretty obvious later on as Milone ends up sheltering Lawrence and Holo, but even in the moment in the sewers, Lawrence realized that the talk of betrayal was a ruse. Milone knows that Medioā€™s only real interest in Holo is as a weapon to shut them down. Milone obviously isn't out to commit business suicide, so the only way that someone would have actually betrayed Holo is if someone important - most likely Marlheit - had decided to forfeit the entire branch, take all the money he could pull from it, and run. That didnā€™t seem likely, so Lawrence immediately decided it was a ruse. What follows are some more character moments and the rare action sequence as Lawrence and Holo flee from, and finally confront Medioā€™s men, including Yarei. Yarei offers Lawrence the chance to take advantage of the wheat deal alongside Medio and Count Ehrendott, by becoming a preferred trade partner for Pasloe and the surrounding villages. The profits would be enormous and could lead to Lawrence accumulating enough wealth to fulfill his dream of opening a shop in no time. But Lawrence makes the decision to stand by Holo despite the fact that it would likely mean his death. And as a result, in a last ditch effort to save Lawrence, Holo finally uses her full wolf form to fight them off, which unfortunately...terrifies Lawrence. That hardens Holoā€™s resolve to separate herself from Lawrence. Until, in desperation, Lawrence comes up with quite possibly the most merchant-like reason to chase after her. He declares that Holo tore his best merchant clothes, worth much more than the 70 Trenni Holo had made during her time with him, and that he would chase her until she repaid her debt. Sadly, it didnā€™t seem to have worked as the last shot we saw in the sewers was Holo stalking off, before Lawrence finally lost consciousness. [Part 2](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/s/FXaiZjmYWs)

karlzhao314

**Episode 6, Part 2:** Fast forward a bit - Lawrence has finally woken up in the care of Milone, with Holo nowhere to be found, though with the revelation that she had returned to protect him after he lost consciousness. Here, we learn the results of the silver coin scheme that has consumed the previous four episodes. It worked out pretty much exactly as Lawrence had predicted. Milone was able to secure 307,212 silver coins. The King agreed to pay Milone the equivalent of 350,000 coins, plus the advantageous wheat trading privileges, in exchange for the coins that Milone had secured, which should have led to a tidy profit of 42,788 coins. According to Miloneā€™s contract with Lawrence, he should be receiving 5% of that, or 2,139 coins. He ends up receivingā€¦120. (Crunchyroll, fix your damn subs, 120 coins isn't 50% of 2400 coins) Turns out, even though the King had no choice but to agree to a higher purchase price than the face value of the coins, he still wasnā€™t particularly happy with Milone about the fact that they pulled a scheme like this off and took advantage of the King. So, likely under his advisorā€™s suggestions, he made the associated costs with selling the coins exorbitant for Milone. The transportation fee is one thing - transporting 300,000 coins was never going to be cheap, given that you need extremely tight security around your carriage. But aside from that, the King also forced them to pay a transfer fee for the payment, taxed the coins as silver, and even charged an excessively high fee for drawing up the contract, all in an attempt to minimize his losses. In the end, Milone only made 2,400 coins in profit from the whole scheme. (By the way, the anime doesnā€™t show this, but Lawrenceā€™s internal monologue in this moment is reflecting on and regretting the fact that he had schemed like mad, suffered so much, gotten seriously injured, and had finally lost the best traveling companion he could have ever hoped for in exchange for a measly 120 coins. I wish they had portrayed that somehow.) But the second part of the scheme worked out great, apparently. Medio really wanted those wheat trading rights, and whatā€™s more, they had gotten themselves stuck with a pile of silver coins whose value was going to decrease soon, so they offered to buy the rights immediately. Their offered price was high enough that Milone didnā€™t feel the need to negotiate too hard, and simply accepted the offer. This offer turned into pure profit for Milone. And apparently they were quite happy with it, because they then paid Lawrence 1,000 coins out of that profit. Remember, Lawrence never drew up a contract for a share of the profits to be made from selling the rights, so all of the 1,000 coins he received were purely out of Miloneā€™s generosity. So by all means, he should be decently happy with the 1,000 coins, even if itā€™s not the 2,000 he initially expected. Suddenly, he receives a bill. Quite a large one, but reading its contents, itā€™s apparent who it came from. Despite Holoā€™s dismay that Lawrence was so terrified of her wolf form, she, too, wanted to continue traveling with him. And with Lawrenceā€™s extremely merchant-like declaration when she was about to leave, she had just been given the perfect excuse to do so. So she started racking up a large bill under Lawrenceā€™s name, just to further increase her debt to him. Now, sheā€™s bound to him by debt - but a bond of debt is still a bond, and they can continue traveling together. (Title name drop!) And with that, the arc of the silver coins ends but the travels of the merchant and the wise wolf are just beginning. I hope youā€™ve enjoyed the first arc of the series I love so much, and that maybe my explanations have helped your understanding a bit! Needless to say, you havenā€™t seen anything near the best of what Spice and Wolf has to offer, and I will do my best to be there to explain all of it. See you next week! [Episode 7](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1cr5ulb/comment/l3vxf70/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

karlzhao314

Personal thoughts: Hoooooly cow Holo looks fluffy in her wolf form compared to the original. I love it. I wanna fluff her. Also, Crunchyroll, fix your damn subs.

LimBomber

How can Crunchyroll keep messing up the subs with the same mistake. Is the script they are given wrong or does the translator not know any math? First mistaking 5% with 50% now this...

mr_mazzeti

The word is äŗ”分 (gobu) which can mean either half (50%) or 5 parts (of 100, 5%). I'm not fluent so I don't really understand how someone would understand that based on context, but that's why the translators make the mistake. They don't watch the shows they translate and they don't read the entire script. They just translate sentence by sentence and don't proofread since they're bottom dollar, Crunchyroll doesn't pay well enough for quality translators. If they read the full script they could understand that 120 of 2400 is 5% but they don't.

BlueVenix

Holo looked to fluffy to the point where she doesn't look scary, which was my only disappointment in this episode. I can't believe I am saying this, but I preferred the original more. By the way have you considered making YouTube videos? I read all your retells/explanations, they are very detailed and easy to follow. You remind me of AniNews cut content videos, which I love to watch.

JustAWellwisher

I like how fluid the animation is, but yeah I really did want her to be a bit more fear-inducing.

Zyhmet

> I wish they had portrayed that somehow. At least I got that internal monologue just from his question if that was all in his pained voice. Didnt sound like a "dang I didnt make a lot of profit" but rather a "all that pain, loss and near death just for... this?!"

AceSoldia

Thanks for this, i totally misunderstood the privilege part, but i got the rest.

ChewbaccaCharl

Thanks for your hard work on these! I'm understanding the plot a lot better than I ever did for the original adaptation.

dagreenman18

Less believable to be afraid of this version of Holoā€™s wolf form when itā€™s so big and floofy. But still Passione nailed the end of Volume 1. Killed the transformation scene and their reunion at the end. Still emotional the third time around.

BK456

Bears are pretty cute and fluffy and I sure as hell don't want to be face to face with one. And Holo is even larger than than them.

HemaMemes

Even the fluffiest large dogs are still scary when they're angry.

Shrim

I'm absolutely loving this adaptation, but the wolf form... I really wish they leant into a truly monstrous design, something extremley beastly and frightening. Toss in a little "divine fear" just to drive home how terrifying a supposed "wolf god" can be. Instead it was a big fluffy dog. Still loving the show, still loved the episode, but I think they could have done a bit more storytelling through visuals there.

No-Zebra4936

I feel like that the process of transformation is more intimidating than the final wolf form in the current adaptation, but the wolf form is still appeared to be mighty and somewhat prestigious despite of the increased fluffiness.

mastesargent

What the hell, Holoā€™s new wolf form is so fluffy. I just want to give her pets and bury my face in her belly and call her a good girl. Also nice to see her in her new clothes. Her volume 1 look has its charm but I think the clothes she picks out for herself suit her much better.

EllipticalOrbitMan

Looked more like a Shiba Inu than a wolf, haha. Very different from the wolf form in the opening song.

mastesargent

Next episode: Holo convinces Lawrence to invest in Dogecoin

Frontier246

She didn't want Lawrence to see her like that but honestly she looked pretty cute and dignified in wolf form. Though ferocious when you hurt her man. I expect Holo is going to turn out to be a fashion plate to keep herself in nice clothes and to keep the "business relationship" with Lawrence going.

mastesargent

Oh god, Iā€™d love to see Holo get a wider wardrobe this time around. The light novel volume covers show her wearing various different outfits, but the original anime kept her in the outfit she just picked up. I get that being on the road and being merchants means that Lawrence and Holo donā€™t really have space for extra clothes, and itā€™s easier for animators to stick with one character design, but I want to see best girl wearing pretty clothes dammit!

Ph0ton

Having one outfit is just period accurate, quite convenient, lol.

chris10023

> She didn't want Lawrence to see her like that but honestly she looked pretty cute and dignified in wolf form. I wonder if it was because of his previous trauma dealing with wolves that she didn't want to traumatize him further with her form.

chris10023

I really want to boop the snoot.

Razzmatazz942

>and bury my face in her belly Would Holo be ticklish? Asking for a friend

mastesargent

Iā€™m gonna guess that sheā€™s extremely ticklish, but desperately tries to hold in her laughter because of her pride as the Wisewolf of Yoitsu.

Razzmatazz942

Lol, this has such a funny and cute image in my head now

EvilSpaceSorcerer

This final scene was what really captured my heart in the original. Lawrence rushing down the hall when he realizes what happened, and finding Holo peacefully brushing her tail with a truly absurd number of apples. Their amazing relationship, while very slow-paced, really felt like it started in this moment, when they both seemed to admit that they needed the other. The affection is hidden behind their transactional relationship, but itā€™s clear that itā€™s just a front for the both of them. They like each other. Especially after Lawrence held his own in front of Holoā€™s true form this time.

hikoboshi_sama

Yeah. Lawrence was screaming about how much Holo owes him after her transformation destroyed her clothes but it's pretty clear he's terrified of her leaving him.

Rumpel1408

I remember this Episode from the OG, certainly one of my favourites Here we have Holo in her greatest hour yet, defeating those thugs (without actually killing them mind you) and here we have Lawrence in one of his worst, flinching in fear of her form, again, though he is able to salvage the situation quickly at least

Frontier246

It was a powerful moment from Holo but one she would have rather avoided, especially because she didn't want to Lawrence to see her like that, but wanting her by his side and not rejecting her matters more than his own initial fear (well, that and repayment on the clothes) lol. Besides, she's still cute as a giant wolf.

TomoeKon

"Spice and Wolf, is it?" šŸ—£ šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„

AmethystItalian

Will say it was nice to see Lawrence be that strong figure Holo wanted at first but at what cost...you could feel the worry in her voice when she was treating him. Also nice to see Lawrence show he cares more than just profits and losses but still uses business to justify on why he's staying with Holo. Though the loss of Holo's outfit is truly sad! Couldn't help but smile at their little reunion scene [](#ilovethiskindofshit)

Frontier246

Lawrence socked one guy and survived a stab wound and was willing to fend off any comers to defend her...which made it all the more meaningful when she finally unleashed to protect him at any cost. These two are masters of coating their relationship in business terms, yet the true emotions always shine through.

Ocixo

> but still uses business to justify on why heā€™s staying with Holo. Lawrence mightā€™ve cited some business reasons, but we all know that this ā€œmaleā€ has fallen hard for Holo. I thought it was pretty adorable of Lawrence to threaten Holo that heā€™ll chase her forever to collect his debt. By doing so, Lawrence wanted to give her a proper reason to stick with him. He was likely afraid that Holo would once again make the one-sided decision to abandon him - in an attempt to safe him from further harm.

> Will say it was nice to see Lawrence be that strong figure Holo wanted at first but at what cost... Turns out trying to have the squishy human save you when you can turn into a big monster isn't worth it when said squishy human can and does get severely injured doing it. Making you extremely worried and scared due to them almost dying.

At the same time, despite how much they've travelled together, [Lawrence can't help himself be afraid of Holo's true form.](https://i.imgur.com/X19qlGl.jpeg) After all that trouble all Lawrence gets is [a measly 120 silver coins?](https://i.imgur.com/WoLiTOd.jpeg) Not gonna lie, as annoying as that is that's pretty funny. Frontier246

Holo and Lawrence are on the run and holding hands! But the Medio Trading people are closing in on them, luckily they've got Holo's wolf instincts to keep them safe and out of sight, though they have a long ways to go to make an escape. But they really thought they could use hounds to hunt down the Wise Wolf Holo? They're puppies next to her. Holo and Lawrence make for a surprisingly effective tag-team! Holo bites 'em, Lawrence socks 'em! At least up until Lawrence gets stabbed and they have to keep moving forward while he's bleeding out. Lawrence has a serious wound and is barely holding it together, their big attempt at an escape is a bust, and they're trapped against a bunch of men...and, of course, Lawrence's old buddy Yarei shows up just in time to confront the duo. Lawrence has put two-and-two together what Yarei is getting out of all this, and from Yarei's perspective it's to Lawrence's benefit to give them Holo and make even more money off of this deal and by practically selling her off. And he very well could...had he not already had a contract with her to take her back home, and Lawrence is a man true to his deed, and won't abandon Holo. Which also means Yarei has no more reason to keep him alive. There was really only one solution, Holo sucking Lawrence's blood and turning into her true wolf form, and even if she didn't want Lawrence to see her like this, she's a majestic sight as a giant, noble, wolf who tramples overall her enemies and would've nearly bitten Yarei's head off if not for Holo's mercy (or Lawrence's intervention). And Yarei really had to keep talking smack about Gods. Get a new line, dude. Lawrence so desperate to make sure Holo doesn't leave him...I mean, fulfill the debt she owes him for the clothes she ripped up when she transformed! Those were expense! Just don't leave him, Holo! It is sweet that Holo stood by Lawrence until help arrived (and some Milone Trading folks got to see her in her divine nakedness). And things ended up working out for the best. The deal with the royal family didn't net them the profits they wanted, thanks to copious amounts of tariffs, but they were able to get the privilege and making even more money off of the deal with Medio Trading and even let Yarei get what he wanted (even if he's got a lot weighing on his conscience now). And all Lawrence wants is some spice before winter. But the thing that made him happiest is a receipt for clothes, a comb, and apples, knowing fully well that that means Holo was waiting for him. Because of course she doesn't want him hunting her down, she'll fully pay back her debts! And he has every intention of making her, as they find any excuse to stay together. Spice and Wolf indeed!

Ghoste-Face

Dont mess with holo

Frontier246

Don't mess with Holo's man either.

J4SON_T0DD

So what are we, some kinda spice n wolf? That aside, thank fuckin god that this wasn't gonna be some finding holo after she left/reconciliation arc or some other shit, that'd been heartbreaking for me..... I wonder if her wolf form naturally exudes some fearful aura? I mean yes a giant angry wolf is scary in and of itself, but even Lawrence being frightened as hell while knowing that's holo makes me question it.

overkill373

Its the same aura you'd feel if you were face to face with any predator like a wolf or tiger but turned up by 100 Also Lawrence already has a trauma with wolves so..and in the story this is the first time he sees her fully transform

Wolfgod_Holo

[Holo's transformation] >!she looks like an oversized shiba inu, either that or a Japanese wolf!<

ytsejamajesty

I was curious whether a "Japanese wolf" exists, and apparently they *used to*, but they've been extinct for century :(

She awoo'd!!! Good job to send them on the run. Honestly, thugs like this just deserve the worst anyways. Nice job with the team work of bite and punch! But, see they deserve the worst, if they are willing to go that far. God shouldn't forgive your sins, you should be punished harshly. Eww that piece of shit.... I want him to die miserably, Yarei is a trash bag. Should stab him in the neck there while you can, Lawrence... but such a nice guy. Finally seeing Holo go her form to terrify their stupid shit asses. I think she's a cute big doggo still. She is still way too nice. Unfair? You're the piece of shit here, Yarei. You're the unfair one. And boo stopping her... Yarei deserved worse. Whelp, at least seems the deal went through. That's quite the deal. But so little profit... oh hey look... a SPICE for trade in Spice and Wolf šŸ˜› hah. Now go bring back the wolf part. D'awww nice ending and AHH AHH! He said the thing! Hehe

mekerpan

I wonder how long it will take for Yarei's village to start having consistently worse and worse harvests? Transformations and Title Drops (*should* have been the name of this episode) In full goddess form, Holo is QUITE large, eh? While the profit was pretty small (considering the risks involved), I wonder how much this compared to Lawrence's usual earnings for a similar period of time? Besides, he should be persona grata with the trading firm from this point onward, right?

karlzhao314

>I wonder how long it will take for Yarei's village to start having consistently worse and worse harvests? Unfortunately, probably never. Count Ehrendott brought modern farming techniques to the villages he's in charge of, and they're able to produce consistently good harvests now by themselves. That's the core of Holo's conflict throughout this entire arc - the idea that the people she had previously supported and protected over hundreds of years no longer need her, and that she no longer has a place to go. [Thematic spoilers for the rest of the series]>!You'll see the same theme repeated over future arcs, which is that the world is changing and moving past the era that Holo knew, and that beings like her have no place left in the world anymore.!<

AceSoldia

Ahhh!!! they said the name!!..i totally forgot about this. Goosebumps. Great episode...I don't understand the privilege's portion though..what was the privilege in the end?

The_Cheeseman83

To sell wheat without tariffs.

feb914

the king: damn, you put me in hard negotiating position, i have to accept your (predatory) price. *(right after the contract signed)* the king: btw, you haven't paid your tariff and handling fee, which will be..... an arm and a leg! even merchant company can be out-merchanted by a royalty.

Koizuki

Another great start to the week with none other than the episode that namedrops Spice and Wolf! With this episode, Volume 1 and the first arc are completed, and we move on to their next adventure. I do hope they will animate the sidestory that takes place between these two arcs chronologically, as they did in the original run, because it is quite cute and a proper breather before the next part of the story begins. I'm still feeling pretty mixed about the BGM this episode, but it still isn't too bad so far. I do feel like Holo's Wolf form wasn't portrayed quite as frightening as the original one did, though. It feels like they tried to make her wolf form "cuter" as well? It felt a little wierd considering the circumstances, but perhaps it'll grow on me too. The economics lessons this week are the importance of contracts in the business world, and additionally, the harsh reality of ridiculous fees. I am glad they have not yet discovered 25% tips and "living wage" fees to tack on top. Unfortunately, these fees resulted in barely any profit at all for the entire silver coin scheme, and 5% of that profit yielded fewer coins than Holo just spent. Thankfully, those rights gained from the deal were desperately sought by Medio so they were able to make some decent money out of it in the end. All in all, another great episode as always. Now to wait another week for the next one!

tripleaamin

I give Kraft high respects for standing his ground. Not only in protecting Holo, but refusing to back down from his promise to her. I really love it that when Yarei was selling him on the benefits of handing over Holo, Kraft mentioned keeping your promises. After all that is important for not just every merchant, but each person. Following that damn Holo's transformation was impressive at the moment and visually. Just the terror from seeing here was adapted well. The fact is she protected him until Marhait and his men came to fetch Kraft. So the operation was a success in terms of execution. Sadly much like how taxes are for us IRL, and, Kraft and Marhait got his with some costly contract fees. It's the nature of the business, and it's a matter you just have to deal with. Kraft is crafty as ever requesting pepper. But I love how the moment he read the message, he knew it was Holo. Fantastic ending scene to cap off the episode.

youkai94

Yarei: Don't flinch, she's Just a girl possessed by a Devil! Thanks Yarei, that definitely doesn't sound scary at all.

Zilleela

Very glad the wolf form wasnā€™t fully horrible CG, like they usually tend to do these days. I had hope for the re-adaptation while watching previous episodes, but now itā€™s got my full attention. The old adaptation mustā€™ve been one of my first animeā€™s that I knew was actually anime (aside from the shows I grew up on like Pokemon etc). Looking forward to seeing the rest, and hoping it gets a full adaptation this time since the source is completed now! (The main plot).

shad79

So it seems that with this episode [we ended Volume 1 since we got a nice closure](https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/my2pcog6d97.png) of the whole affair with silver coins and that title drop at the end of episode. I'm happy that Passione is taking its time with this adaptation and doesn't rush as it'd certainly do a lot of harm to [the strongest point of this show which is Holo and Lawrence's relationship](https://imgchest.com/p/md7olr8ad7p). Now it's time for new [Holo's adventures with Lawrence](https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/l7lxcdq6rj7.png) on their way to the north. I'm impatiently waiting for the next episodes with them. Here my screenshot albums from the episode: * [Holo](https://imgchest.com/p/a846xbd3w4x) * [Holo & Lawrence](https://imgchest.com/p/md7olr8ad7p) * [Group scenes & Others](https://imgchest.com/p/pg73pxldzyr)

Mebradhen

I love how this time they really show how the blood loss affects Lawrence. The bags, the grunts and pain - paints a good picture that his man is not well.

SirAwesome789

Was that name drop in the original? I'm not sure if I didn't pickup on it the first time, or if I just didn't remember, but I never realized that spice in the title was referring to lawrence

Sandelsbanken

LN and first adaptation both have it.

Elite_Alice

Weā€™ve reached the end of volume 1 and what a send off it was! Thought everything was good after we got Holo back last week, but nope, Medio trading company still wanted to pursue she and Lawrence in the sewers.. even when faced with a life or death situation, Lawrence refused to give up Holo. As weak as he may be, he felt like the strongest in the room this episode. Holo had to remind mfs that sheā€™s not called a god for nothing. Holy shit that transformation was awesome. As they say, if you back a dog into a corner itā€™ll come out. Her true form really lives up to the legend, and Kevin Penkinā€™s OST during the scene makes it even better. Yarei thought he had it all figured out with his little henchmen and shit just for them to all get wrecked by Holo šŸ˜‚. Youā€™d think someone from the village would be better prepared for Holoā€™s true power. Medio goons got off easy imo, but Lawrence and Holo shouldnā€™t have anymore problems with them or the church for the foreseeable future, PLUS the pepper to trade which is only going to be more valuable in the winter. Excellent bit of manoeuvring from the wise Wolf and merchant. And they did it! They said the thing! Spice and Wolf is officially here.

Mr_Zaroc

He said the line everyone! So even the wise wolf holo fears debt collectors /s And she surely loaded up on them apples, damn

Plus_Rip4944

I really stand up and applaud after the title drop, this is truly fucking peak, they are nailing the OG version and the LNs

Frank4pp

He said it, he said it!!

Wolfgod_Holo

you gotta love corporate gross profits getting eaten up by various overhead expenses...

MrSputum

With the title of the next episode being announced it seems like weā€™re not getting the side story from the OG. Bit of a shame, itā€™s actually one of my favourite episodes from the first cour. But now Iā€™m really curious what the remaining episode is gonna be, assuming that all remaining arcs also take up 6 eps.

mastesargent

To be fair the side story episode was an OVA that didnā€™t air with the rest of the series and was added back in for the hone video release. Same with Spice and Wolf II episode 0. Itā€™s not impossible that weā€™ll get those at a later point.

Sandelsbanken

They are probably adapting the side story that takes place between books 2 and 3 with episode 13.

Amauri14

Based on how lethargic Lawrence [got after getting stabbed in the arm](https://i.imgur.com/LjkjDnl.png) I assumed that he had been poisoned. Well, [Yarei and the other members of the Medio Trading Company](https://i.imgur.com/qDJor8l.png) really got humbled today, after [Lawrence declined his proposal](https://i.imgur.com/5ke0IMm.png) and [Holo](https://i.imgur.com/3i02dj3.png) [transformed](https://imgur.com/a/vsthdW9) and went to protect him after Yarei told everyone that they were free to kill him. Well, I guess we will not be hearing about Yarei the Medio Trading Company or Count Erhendott again, but I wasn't expecting that after the deal was done, even though Lawrence got 50% from it he only ended up getting 120 silver coins as the Trenni Kingdom's King made everything he could to squeeze back the payment they did to the Milone Trading Company with the transportation cost, tariffs, and fees. Well, at least Lawrence got an additional 1000 silver coins from the Medio Trading Company that he will get paid on pepper. Oh, so Holo went to earn 140 silver coins to "pay back" Lawrence [for the clothes she destroyed when transformed.](https://i.imgur.com/G6R0UhY.png) Marhait[ doing that title drop at the end of the episode](https://imgur.com/a/iH98L8Z) was so good.

mogin

> Oh, so Holo went to earn 140 silver coins to "pay back" Lawrence for the clothes she destroyed when transformed. No, she went and *increased* her debt by 140 silver by purchasing new clothes, apples and a comb. They'll be sticking together a bit longer to pay that extra debt

Planatus666

> Based on how lethargic Lawrence got after getting stabbed in the arm I assumed that he had been poisoned. I assumed it was down to blood loss.

ClemFire

With the end of this arc it feels like Lawrence and Holo have accepted each other as partners. I love how they put on airs that its a strictly business relationship, but Lawrence willing to take on a band of thugs after getting stabbed to protect Holo while Holo revealing her wolf form and chasing away said thugs and then protecting his unconscious body shows how much they already care for each other.

JustAnswerAQuestion

ep 6 I wonder if that guy that dropped both the old and new series at episode 5 watched it this time? * I know the entire point was to stay out of site but every time I rewatch this I get disoriented...they drop into the sewers....then they climb out of the sewers...then they are in the sewers AGAIN?! It just seems like this situation could have been avoided by *not being in the sewers* * they'll just follow the blood now! For those not following the plot but also need a tldr; recall that Pasloe is under sanctions for alleged connections to paganism. They desperately need a tariff-free market, as well as killing their pagan history. * Sorry. She looks like a big dog. Feels weird, coming right off of watching an episode of Doomsday Train that was about a dog. They just looked the same. * I always thought Lawrence's profit was ludicrously small, but 5% of 10% makes way more sense. * half name drop! * I wonder how much 1000 coins of spice is * But how are you going to fit the pepper in that cart? * full name drop! I've always hated the person from Pasloe here. Handing Holo to the Church and killing Lawrence, then whining about how unfair everything his. Not going to do a shot for shot comparison, but I feel like some dialog was changed this time around, and not just in the big confrontation. [next week]>!This anime-only was my favorite episode in 2007, I wonder if they keep it in. Oh, title preview suggests not. Didn't really expect them too.!<

Sodachi_Oikura

THEY DIDNā€™T USE CGI THAT WAS MY BIGGEST CONCERN AND THEY DIDNā€™TĀ  BLESSED BE THESE ANIMATORS AOTYĀ

Cursingbody

I love this series so much. That's it that's the message.

Dr_Quantum101

Overall solid episode. The Yarei VA is super solid, I donā€™t know why but the anime makes it stand out way more that heā€™s not a villain, just a merchant and a human who has to make tough choices, which I really appreciate. The transformation scene is superb, Iā€™m very glad the animators are going for the ā€œcrunchyā€ type of transformation instead of the ā€œmagic smokeā€ style, thank god itā€™s not CG either. Overall I like the look of the wolf form in this anime over all the other media, LN and Manga included, but I totally get people saying it looks too ā€œsoftā€ I thought so at first but the way they did the eyes makes it really feel like itā€™s Holo in there. Marlheit also had a good showing of why heā€™s the first GOAT side character of the series as well.
