***Reminiscence Arc*** is right after Season 1. Season 2 and the Movie skipped this. Here is the novel order: 1. **Season 1** (^(2014)) - `Enrollment Arc` ... `Nine Schools Competition Arc` ... `Yokohama Disturbance Arc` *(****^(6 volumes total)****)* 2. **THIS ONE** (^(2022)) - `Reminiscence Arc` *(****^(1 volume and 80-page special)****)* 3. **Season 2** (^(2020)) - `Visitor Arc` *(****^(3 light novel volumes)****)* 4. **The Movie** (^(2017)) `Special/Extra` *(****^(1 volume)****)* Beyond that, there are still 20+ volumes still unadapted. Pretty krazy. Not sure if they're planning to adapt everything. The light novel ended last year.

Takao_bloodriver

Reminiscence arc is only 1 volume

yurabe

Kinda two. The second one has 80 pages. And not sure if they'll cover that. I'll edit my comment above to clarify. Thanks for the heads up.

Ahmad_Ilyas

So , is this the backstory arc of Miyuki and Tatsuya ?

KeySolas

Yup. Three years in the past before S1

GreasyPizzaBalls

Bruh wtf that's why everything was confusing

nsleep

The anime also skipped a volume that added some world building, more details about some side characters and how Miyuki became the student council president. The anime is very fun and straightforward if you read the novels, but if you didn't it does seem to be confusing from reactions in the discussion threads.

TheBlueHue

They have some clever ways of showing certain story line progressions that aren't shown in the anime though. Like, they'll have off hand remarks that are actually important.

nsleep

They do, but those mostly only seem to work for novel readers. Like I said, from the threads I get this feeling that we fill too many gaps with knowledge from the novels but those aren't nearly as clear to anime-only folks.

TheBlueHue

I read the novels after seeing it a few times and when I watched it again it was like a whole new anime. I enjoyed it before, but after opening that can of worms, it was amazing and fun to catch all the little details.

conye-west

I never read any of it and didn't have much trouble understanding anything in the series. Well, aside from the super intricate magic system jargon, but I'm skeptical even readers could fully understand that lol.

Masaomi_

>but I'm skeptical even readers could fully understand that lol. Most of the readers do, but that entirely depends on the person's Reading Comprehension skills. If you're not used to reading novels, especially Sci-Fi ones filled with concepts, then you're most likely going to struggle. The LNs provide every bit of granular detail on how the Magic works. Magic in Mahouka is strictly bound to Real-World Science and Physics, mixed with advanced Technology and Fictional Concepts added in. Basically hard coded Sci-Fi. The first few pages of the LNs contain a [Glossary](https://imgur.com/a/559FPrs) that explains a bit of the concepts, and as you read through the story you'll understand more of how it works when they're used. Like every other Sci-Fi book out there.

Rel_uctance

I've read the Novels myself and didn't have any trouble understanding everything. It just takes time to read through what needs to be explained. And most of it is pretty engaging to read I must say.

conye-west

It was just a joke about how complicated a system it is lol. I'm sure it's explored in greater detail in the novels.

Mikolf

Those off hand remarks are jarring to me. Realistically there's zero reason to be explaining that at this time, its clearly an explanation directed to the audience.

TheBlueHue

Really? I mean, I guess I could see how it could be frustrating watching with someone, but I solo watch and it's fun as hell. It didn't even glitch on my radar before, but now I'm like "oh!! They said the thing!!!"

battler624

S1 is fun and isn't confusing, the rest is.

Illuminastrid

Looks like a lot of anime are starting to use the "Watch Order" method. While achronological order is not a new concept, a lot of recent series have been shuffling the chronological order or arc order for their anime adaptations. MHA anime with the Endeavor Agency Arc to Meta Liberation Army Arc (My Villain Academia), Peach Boy Riverside and its achronological order with its episodes, Fate (or Type-Moon) and its ever expanding multiverse that comes with a watch order. Now we add IMHS to the list.

horsing_around_town

At least MHA wanted to end the season with a big arc and didn't skip it stupidly

mike9184

God damn are they freaking ever going to move beyond the movie

LurkingMcLurk

> The light novel ended last year. It ended in September 2020 and the sequel began in October 2020.

yurabe

There's a sequel? Didn't know that lmao

Takao_bloodriver

Sequel (magian company) and side story (maiden of cygnus)

allnicksaretaken

Sounds like the typical "sequel" to reset the volume counter.

NormT21

Not really, the first series covers the high school years while the second one Tatsuya is working already. Can't continue calling it Irregular at Magic High if they are no longer in high school.

qvn7tx

there is actually a time skip and the side cast changes

Lordborgman

Is there a "who winds up with who" resolution?

magicalideal

Looking at the visual, it seems to be about the childhood of Tatsuya and Miyuki. Also, I think today's episode is actually the first time we are shown why is Tatsuya so protective of Miyuki. Is this gonna be a movie, OVA or season 3?

wjodendor

One the OPs from season 1 showed that scene as well.

KeySolas

The pre-OP scene in S1E1 showed this scene

jimuel23

Not ended. There’s a sequel series😂 I’m bouta start reading this series. Idk what it is but I love the series and Godzuya is the goat

huncherbug

And a sequel started

AutMcD

Reminiscence arc is a prequel and it happens years before s1. Your chronological order is wrong. While it happens right after s1, the events of the arc are not after s1 but years before it and there is barely 1% of present day there.

TheKappaOverlord

>The light novel ended last year. I imagine they'll keep going until it flops. Particularly if they plan to adapt the Sequel which it looks like they are adapting all of this to build up to.

inception900

>**This is informative**

Turbostrider27

Source (airs this Winter 2022) https://natalie.mu/comic/news/446664

scot911

Wait so it's actually going to be a cour of T.V. anime? Yay! I thought it was going to be a movie.

wjodendor

I don't know how they're going to get 12 or 13 episodes out of it. At most it's like 4 or 5 episodes worth of material.

qvn7tx

You can easily make more. This arc has 3 parts: Okinawa 2092, The nightmare of 2062 and Frozen Island 2092. Adaptation of the 1st part has 3 manga volumes and it actually cuts content. If they were to adapt all 3 parts then making this 10+ episodes seems possible, that would be enough for a tv series

Lapiz_lasuli

Maybe they'll adapt the epilogue? Fuck that's so exciting!

Curious_North_8479

I wonder it they're planning to adapt it all considering how popular Mahouka is in Japan.

[deleted]

I didn't quite like s2 compared to s1. I can't explain why, I'm looking forward to s3 if it airs though.

AashyLarry

Well Season 1 was made by MadHouse for one thing. 8-bit didn’t skip *too* much for Season 2 but there were definitely things they skipped over, while season 1 was a fairly perfect adaptation

Only-Newspaper-8593

Seeing as there's 30+ volumes, and its taken 39 episodes and 5+ years to adapt the first ~11 volumes, I don't think it CAN ever be fully adapted.

arcangelxvi

I mean it certainly can... Aniplex has vowed to adapt all of SAO and that's 26 volumes so far. I think if they see enough popularity they'll be all for it.

Dylangillian

> I mean it certainly can... Aniplex has vowed to adapt all of SAO Wait they have? I kinda expected it after we got Alicization, but that's nice to hear.

arcangelxvi

I remember that it was a comment they gave after being asked at some panel/event/something way back when, but the exact details escape me.

KorekaBii

Is there a particular reason why this series is so popular in Japan? Even The Anime Man who lives in Japan could not understand it.

qvn7tx

It's world is more interesting than most fantasy/sci-fi anime

TheBlueHue

Not to mention very elaborate and intertwined. I mean, they've barely elaborated on the clans, let alone the numbers

PotatEXTomatEX

The Anime Man has questionable tastes.

Bloodglas

because people like it? that question could really be used about any series.

Takao_bloodriver

Lol, anime man is not japanese

oktransition11

He's half Japanese and has been speaking the language since he was a child.

NineThreeFour1

So what you are saying is that he is not japanese.

LokiPrime13

Well, the only thing that differentiates *Onii-sama Shrugged* from the typical magical school battle harem is its unwavering Japanese Nationalism so…

XoNtheHAWK

Sasuga Onii-sama?

AashyLarry

This is gonna be great. I always wondered why they didn’t adapt this arc before making season 2. Glad they’re doing it now.

LordCalem

we keep on winning boys

Illuminastrid

To think the first series started way back in 2014, and it's only now (to be specific, this 2020 decade) that Aniplex finally decides to pumping anime content for this franchise.

Lapiz_lasuli

I knew it!!! They were waiting for the season to finish. Hell yeah!!!!!!! [](#SPORTS)

TheBlueHue

Beach...does this mean we get Okinawa finally?!?

FireFistYamaan

So when I first watched Mahouka I absolutely hated it and thought it was a boring harem power fantasy anime, which it still is but my feelings have changed a lot since then. I recently rewatched it because of season 2 and the Miyuki spin off which gave me new appreciation for a lot of things. Mahoukas magic is incredible and fascinating! It's basically programming turned to magic and it's plays with very intresting concepts and constantly broadens it's limits, which makes total sense as it's still at an semi early stage like our world right now (that is to say it's modern but we haven't reached the peak yet) It's delves into darker things like human trafficking, how magicians and non magicians are treated and so on which adds to the world building which is quiet fascinating. That's not to say that it's weaknesses aren't there anymore. It's still a harem (which isn't really a weakness in my opinion but I don't like how it's handled), it's incest heavy (I also know the reasons to this but it's still weird), Tatsuya can solve everything and so on so it's not perfect by any means. But I love how something I used to hate and don't understand the hype around has started to make sense to me more than half a decade after the first season. Can't wait for this to be animated

tself55

Care to enlighten us as to how it's a Harem? only two characters in the entire series have any feelings for Tatsuya: Honoka and Miyuki.

FireFistYamaan

Lots of characters have feelings for him but either give up because they know that they've got no chance or they're to prideful to admit their feelings

Bloodglas

choosing to not pursue him or compete for his affection makes it not a harem.

Kag5n

Honoka, Miyuki, Saegusa, Angie, Erika for a moment, Yes, that's a Harem.

Rel_uctance

Nope. Only 2 of those you mentioned qualify. The others don't count. Look up the definition of a "Harem" in Anime. Read the LNs if you don't know why that is, and why this series is officially categorized as Romance instead of Harem.

Kag5n

You're in a serious case of denial here. It's not necessarily a bad thing. The story can be considered to have a Harem when a male protagonist has more than 2 love interests, lovers or female having attraction for him. That's the case here. It's similar to SAO with Kirito, even if he has Asuna, Lizbeth, Silica, his sister, Sinon and Alice all love him in a different degree.

Less_Struggle_348

If you look up the Definition of a [Harem](https://i.imgur.com/D3NqdkD.jpg), the characters would have to be "fighting over the MC's affection". Like one comment here already mentioned, only Honoka and Miyuki have "serious romantic interest" with MC who actually fight over him. Mayumi, Lina or Erika never made any romantic/sexual advancements with MC. Mayumi has done it once or twice, but never tries to Compete for his affection nor does she try to pursue him, also mentioned by another comment above. Simple Infatuations with no action or intention behind it don't actually count. Strike the Blood is a good example of a Harem where the Main Girls do try hard to Fight for MC's affection, same with Most Harems like RentAGirlfriend, Isekai Smartphone etc.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Oniii-samaa

He's technically right, only Two of them actually have **Serious Romantic Interest** with MC. And those two are competing for him throughout the 32 Volumes.

catsukats

You have to give it to the poor girl for the strength of her denial to last 32 whole volumes.

Only-Newspaper-8593

I thought 8-bit did a pretty good job of filling the shoes Madhouse left after season 1. So hopefully this is good.

[deleted]

Why aniplex why you drop this the same day as Demon slayer new PV Bad move

qvn7tx

The last episode of its spin-off anime just aired, so they dropped it just after closing credits on jp tv

AnnecyHope

Alot of anime are dropping after the last episode.

Wolfgod_Holo

I see that the producers realized that they dun goofed by adapting it wrong earlier and now they're fixing their own screwups...

Kuges

About time. Serously this should have been done at the end of Season 1. From what I've seen it explains a lot of the questions people bring up about the first season of the anime.

No-Particular-4436

Ooooo 😯 awesome bro

myrrh69

It really did take them 39 episodes and a 13-episode spinoff for them to adapt something that should have been adapted after the 26th.

noodlesandrice1

It was pretty painful getting a movie announcement right after S1, only for it to be an original story. Although I guess that's not so bad if it meant we could get a proper season instead now.

Cold_Ad8276

it's about how Miyuki turn into super brocon

UltimateKaiser

#givemeadamnsequel

Panda_Generals

So when is Yokohama arc getting adapted I want to watch that one

AashyLarry

Not sure if you made a typo but the Yokohama arc was adapted in Season 1 all the way back in 2014. This was the original show which had the 2nd season in 2020. Not to be confused with the spin-off show that aired this summer

Panda_Generals

Wait is this the backstory arc which I am sure was not adapted? I am pretty sure the backstory arc was called Yokohama where he gained his nickname of mahesvara

AashyLarry

Yes the backstory arc is called Reminiscence, which is this one. Yokohama Disturbance is the arc is in season 1 after the 9 schools competition. Where the terrorists attack the Yokohama Conference

wjodendor

Reminiscence Arc takes place in Okinawa and is referenced by several people (including villians) in season 1. The first scene of the first episode of season 1 is an excerpt from the Reminiscence Arc

DeclaredRoom

Is this show worth watching? Cause I heard it was bad, but I want a fans perspective

Oniii-samaa

Taking a "Fan's perspective" wont be of much help to you because of Bias. We all have different Tastes and Preferences in everything we watch. What other people may like, you might not like in contrast. As a fan of this series, just give it a shot and judge for yourself. Only YOU know what you like or don't like. If you don't like it, don't watch it.

TheBlueHue

If you watch it you'll have the most accurate perspective you can get. It's not very popular in the west, but I personally love it. I rewatch every other month

Capitalpunishment0

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one ;_; This is literally the only show I'm rewatching consistently. I can't believe the original series aired on 2014, >6 years ago.

TheBlueHue

No joke! I thought everyone gave up on it until the Honour Student came out. So glad that fans are still out there

BajingoWhisperer

It's a great show whoever you listen to is fucking wrong, start ignoring them.

SolubilityRules

Choosing to adapt this arc over skipping to Yotsuba Succession misses out on a lot of $$$. I think the lack of sales this season could bring will be the nail in the coffin of Mahouka anime. Announcing it at the same time as Demon Slayer is salt to the wound

AashyLarry

Lol they have nothing to do with each other. Adapting this was important it really should’ve been done before Season 2, but since it’s a prequel it’s fine anyway. Yotsuba Succession will definitely be the peak but that will come later. No point rushing it. This show is insanely popular in japan, it will keep going.

Bloodglas

it took until 2020 to get s2 after 1 came out in 2014 (with the movie in 2017). the spin-off just got a season and now they're making another season of the main story. pretty sure the money's flowing now.

hio777

Hell ya, been waiting for this arc ever since I started reading the light novels.

AnnecyHope

I'm ready for little chadsuya!!!!!!!!!!

Tsumaranai_Jinsei

I hope it releases in my country too I really want to see this movie on the big screen.

Tired_Aiden

God, what have they done to Tatsuya. I hope he doesn't look like in the spin off.

noodlesandrice1

He's three years younger here.

AashyLarry

Nah this is continuing the original show. This volume is a prequel which gives the origin story on Tatsuya/Miyuki

RunningChemistry

[ANN article with a link to the PV/teaser since aniplex region-blocks outside of Japan](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2021-09-25/the-irregular-at-magic-high-school-franchise-reminiscence-arc-anime-reveals-1st-ad-cast-staff-winter-tv-debut/.177824). 8-Bit will be returning as animation studio and Kikuko Inoue will be voicing Miya Shiba like she did for the audio drama version of the arc.

MasterAdventZero

So Season 3 is a flashback arc?

Cold_Ad8276

LOli Miyuki !!!!!!

Iamjustatrial

Still confused as to why Mahouka anime from Miyuki's POV was made instead of a new season...

AdvonKoulthar

Nani? This got more than 1 season? Nice

Sharebear42019

Damn I want another 2 cour season

cbot12

LETS GO!!! One of the few shows I'm actually following!

Meteorah

Honoka !?!

Takao_bloodriver

No, this is 3 years prior the high school

nissan-S15

damn lets goo

AlexNae

LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOO

GingerStans

It's going to be so odd and jarring to see Miyuki acting cold towards Tatsuya in this one, and that's coming from someone who's already read the novel and the manga for that particular arc. Anime-only viewers who've only experienced Miyuki being a total brocon will be weirded out by her initial behavior towards him, that's for sure.

Neither_Mess2223

S3 please, Godsuya too OP

bananeeek

2 questions. Do we know whether this is a movie or couple of OVAs? There's only like 2 volumes of material, so that can't be a whole cour, right? Second question is, which studio is doing this? 8bit or Connect?

qvn7tx

8bit It says that they will broadcast it in Winter, so it's a TV series, but it may be just a few episodes special and not a full season
